Kilmartin Castle | Best places to stay in the Scottish Highlands

"If you’ve ever dreamt of bedding down in an ancient castle, it might well have looked like this bijoux bolthole. Straight out of the pages of a romantic novel, 16th-century Kilmartin Castle lies in a wild, windswept west coast glen, once owned by the Campbell clan. Now a luxurious five-bedroom B&B, it’s been sensitively converted, retaining the stone-flagged floors, barrel-vaulted ceilings and spiral staircases. It’s a tiny castle with bags of attitude and quirky touches, flickering fires, a record player and stack of vinyl and freestanding copper tubs. Best suited to history lovers, wild romantics and ‘Outlander’ fans, wanting to live the craggy-castle dream. " - Lucy Gillmore

Kilmartin castle is a unique and special place! We were 4 couples and would also be great for a family. The kitchen is well equipped. We cooked in a few nights. There is a garden with fresh greens for salads, beets, tomatoes and plenty of fresh herbs. It is an experience to eat in the dining room. We had an amazing chef cook for us one evening and dined in the outdoor dining room greenhouse. The decor is eclectic and interesting. The bedrooms are very comfortable with cozy beds. There is a local pub 2 minute walk for dinner, wee dram or pint. Kilmartin Glenn is full of history. The local museum is amazing and they do educational walks is the area. I recommend traveling to this part of Scotland. There is plenty to see and do.

What a wonderful experience. We celebrate the 60. birthday of my wife. It was absolut fantastic. Kilmartin castle has exceeded our already high expectations. We immediately felt at home. Simon welcomed us personally and show us the most important things. We enjoyed it very much. Thank you for all.

We so enjoyed our 5 day stay at Kilmartin Castle, with all of its wonderful uniqueness and authenticity! We really lived in the castle (cooking in a couple of nights which was great fun and enjoyed an award winning Chef’s dinner in the greenhouse dining room one night, out by the pond!)… We also enjoyed the small Kilmartin village (Great Pub, beautiful local museum - quite an historic area in Scotland) Boat trips, Scotch tours & tastings - along with the obligatory shopping in the towns we visited, made for a great stay in Kilmartin! Kudos to Simon for some very helpful referrals he gave us, too! Loved it!

Kilmartin Castle is a special place, we felt so privileged to experience an extraordinarily unique stay. Great care was taken to make everything perfect from the welcome Simon gave us to the exquisite fixtures and furnishings and spot on amenities. We walked the archeological sites, made lovely salads from the garden, visited the pub for drinks a few times, had a wild swim in the pond and dined in the greenhouse space, dinner served by famed local chef William Hamer.

Wow! What an amazing space to celebrate! Kilmartin Castle was absolutely idyllic and perfect for our extended family. All the bedrooms were well equipped and had really cool furnishings. The dining room was so cosy as was the great hall where we all convened in the evenings. The outside dining space was incredible right next to the pond with beautiful views. And of course the fire pit went down well with everybody as dusk arrived. The location couldn't have been better to explore this part of Scotland which is slightly off the beaten path and makes it even more appealing. Simon and Stef have done a fantastic job with this destination!

For those looking for a spectacular way to have an intimate wedding; Kilmartin Castle is near perfection. As a photographer, it meant the world that I had somewhere to create where I could forage the table elements, have helpful hosts, a getting ready spot in a stunning castle and the greenhouse for reception vibes. 10/10 recommend on behalf of my couple!

We stayed at Kilmartin Castle in April 2024 and had an amazing experience. We highly recommend Chef William Hammer. He cooked for our group when we stayed at Kilmartin Castle. The food was imaginative, delicious and so unique. He is a wonderful young man and is definitely going to be a top chef. I see an amazing and one of a kind open flame cookbook and then a streaming sessions. So grateful to have had his incredible meals.

We booked Kilmartin Castle for a family vacation in January and I cannot say enough wonderful things about this property! It is spacious and yet cozy, immaculately clean, and beautifully decorated. The amenities are luxurious, both indoor and outdoor. It is also in a lovely location for exploring rural Argyll and especially the ancient monuments near Kilmartin. The hosts were extremely helpful and responsive as well.
