The 38 Best Restaurants in Cleveland, Ohio | Eater

"Opened in late 2024, Kiln is the third restaurant Doug Katz has launched in five years. Whereas Amba leans into Indian-fusion and Zhug to Mediterranean small plates, this latest project is unabashedly American, including subtle nods to Katz’s since-closed, 20-year-old bistro Fire. Some two dozen items — some small, others large, all built to be shared — ramble between flaky mushroom tartlets, fried chicken livers, and beef tips in Burgundy jus with airy popovers. Fans of either salmon or trout will love the pink-fleshed arctic char, served atop beurre blanc and capped with a shaved fennel salad. Expect a distinctive wine list, exceptional service, and a stunning setting within the Van Aken District. Know before you go: Unlike Katz’ other hotspots, Amba and Zhug, Kiln does accept reservations, though the emphasis here is still on walk-ins." - Douglas Trattner

Google
Absolutely recommended. Spacious, cozy, elevated decor and atmosphere. Service very attentive and helpful. Cocktails are tasty. The food has good presentation and is flavorful with new mixes. I loved the addition of cherry , plum … jam and sauces to the dishes. Well balanced flavors with high end ingredients. Pricey but worth it for quality and quantity.

I just love everything about this place - just like I live everything about Amba and Zhug, especially the mood setting lights. I was at Van aken and the moment I found that Kiln was in the area, me and my husband knew our anniversary celebration spot. The cocktails were at par and super tasty. The Ricotta dumplings stood out as suggested by other google reviewers. The portion size was phenomenal and would suggest serving breads as an option with Hummus. Hummus was so fresh and creamy! Loved every bit of it. Thanks for a great experience and complementary dessert for our 2 :) ♥️

Google
Its a very warm atmosphere type of restaurant. Very typical Doug Katz style of restaurant - sharable plates. Everything we tried was really good, some things are better than others, but overall everything was very good. One standout is from their desserts - baked alaska was outstanding. The service is quick and efficient

Feels like Fire is back! Doug Katz goes back to the roots with this one and yet serves a fresh menu (with several vegan and vegetarian options). We had a really good meal, the space is cool and gives off definite Fire vibes in the best way, without it ever feeling unoriginal. Great drinks. Our server was good as well. I can’t wait for them to start brunch!

Google
Another amazing dining experience from Chef Katz! The staff is so friendly. The environment is so relaxing and elegant without being stuffy. And the food is amazing! Come prepared to share dishes around the table.

Google
Service and food were excellent. We definitely recommend making a reservation as we previously attempted to go on a weekend at 6:30 and there was a 3 hour wait. We came back today with a reservation and it was perfect. Food was amazing and we enjoyed everything. My favorite was the arctic char and popovers, but my husband really liked the braised lamb shank. However, I really don’t think you could go wrong with anything you order.

Google
Absolutely amazing. My favorites were the Popovers and the Mushroom Tarlets … I am not even a mushroom person. I loved that they had Baked Alaska for dessert!!

Google
Much like it's sister restaurants , Kiln is great in re-imagining dishes. The portions are good size for sharing and munching. The ricotta dumplings were special and good. The mushroom turtles were more expected but good nevertheless. The stuffed cabbage was very interesting. The poached calamari salad was reported to be very good and interesting, and so was the chocolate ganache. The atmosphere is homey, bright, unlike Amba that is more vibrant, dark and noisy.

Yelp
Great restaurant by an outstanding Cleveland chef/restauranteur. Home style small plates were delicious, especially the mushroom tartlettes and the vegan stuffed cabbage. Wonderful atmosphere and unusually good service.

Yelp
After a tiny bit of confusion while attempting to secure a reservation we visited Kiln in Shaker Hts. on Saturday night. Upon arrival a very professional women at the door straightened out the reservation confusion and promptly seated us at a nice table in the downstairs dining room. NOTE: the website seems to indicate you can show up without a reservation. They will have seating on the second floor. However, it neglects to mention, without a reservation you will most likely be seated outside. After being seated a very pleasant young lady by the name of Helen greeted us, informed us she would be our server for the evening and proceeded to take our drink order. The wine list is quite limited in scope. As a matter of fact, it was mostly made up of California and Ohio wines. With a smattering of European offerings. Never the less, Helen was very kind and attentive. She took our order and left us a few moments to review the menu. If you enjoy the "Tapas" (sharable small plates) style of dining you will definitely enjoy this menu. The vast majority of it is made up of an array of small plates. Quite diverse in it's selections. As a matter of fact, of the 26 offerings, only 4 could be considered a true entrée. 1 chicken, 1 fish, 1 beef, and 1 lamb. Well I enjoy the sharable small plate style of dining. And we proceeded to order 10 different items from the many interesting offerings. I got so involved in the meal I only remembered to photograph 4 of them. The majority were very good. I loved the "Roasted Candy Striped Beets" as well as the "Eggs Mayonnaise"... they were marvelous. The "Braised Beef Meatballs" were very interesting. I didn't think I would enjoy a meatball made with only one type of meat but they were quite flavorful. I could have done without the "Croquettes" (dry) and the vegan "Stuffed Cabbage" (bland - no flavor). But, all in all, we had a pleasant meal. After our meal we enjoyed a strong but good cup of coffee along with the "Dark Chocolate Whipped Ganache" with raspberries, agave, and cardamom... excellent combination. Throughout the evening Helen along with her backup singers did an exemplary job. She was always there when we needed her without hovering over us. I definitely recommend you give this establishment a visit. Try as much of the menu as possible. I think you will have a positive experience. Buon appetito!

Yelp
My husband and two adult children visited Kiln last night for my 50th birthday. The space is very reminiscent of Katz's Fire restaurant, although much noisier---we arrived at 8:30 pm and it wasn't until tables started emptying out around 9 that we were able to hear each other speak without raising our voices above normal conversational levels. We tried nine savory dishes: the popovers, broccolini, chicken, chicken livers, meatballs, scalloped potatoes, pork belly, bibb salad, and croquettes. Our favorites were the potatoes, the croquettes, and the popovers (if you're a party of more than 3, note that the meatballs, popovers, and croquettes come in threes, and that due to the oozy nature of the croquettes they can be difficult to split). The chicken was moist and the beans and carrots that came with it had a great flavor. Our least favorite was the meatballs; they were hard and dry, maybe from over-processing? We loved the chicken livers at Fire, but this version was a little stingy with the cherry compote. We ordered three desserts: the cheesecake, baked Alaska, and berries. They were fine but not outstanding; I was surprised that on the berry plate the strawberries (which have been out of season locally here for weeks) were the hard, mostly-white-inside variety that I avoid buying at the grocery store. I was a little disappointed in the presentation as well, which was pile of blueberries, pile of strawberries, pile of cream. I've had similar desserts that were styled more appealingly. Service was spotty. After initially asking for a few minutes to peruse the drinks menu, the server disappeared for more than ten minutes and we had to wave her down to put in our order. The server was helpful when it came to deciding how many dishes to order, but forgot about our popovers until we were almost done with everything else (we had to ask her if they were coming out) . I felt badly for the couple at a neighboring table whose food order she had bungled. She was also a little slow to refill our water---the water glasses are the size of rocks glasses and so require refilling twice as often. Not a big deal if you have another beverage (the rest of us had cocktails/beer), but for my husband, who was sticking to tap water only, it meant having to ask for his glass to be refilled fairly frequently. Upon receiving the bill we also received a little dish of tiny cookies. They're a nice touch but by that time none of us had anything left to drink with them and we kind of choked them down.

Yelp
Kiln was a must try with as yet another Doug Katz restaurant. While the restaurant upheld his eye for interior design and cocktails the food lacked imagination and felt like upscale versions of home cooking with not enough flare to make you leave home. The meatballs were done up ikea meatballs, with an overprocessed texture and missing taste. The vegetable tian is a fancy word for a ratatouille but the dish didn't live up to the fanciness of the name. I won't go on, the food was edible and played with texture and color as we know Katz to do best, but his keen palate for spice blends and flavors was missing from this "regional classic" theme that might have been fitting. I'd go back for the baked alaska (hands down) and cocktails, nothing more.

Yelp
A move up slightly bigger, more American plates from the restaurant group behind Zhug and Amba. Some of the best cocktails in Cleveland in a really lovely space. Nothing is ostentatious, everything is muted and good looking. The food has highs and lows, the ricotta dumplings were fine, the popovers were one of my favorite bites of the year, the lamb and Arctic char just didn't do it for me. Service is kind and caring, but not over the top. If you want to impress this isn't the Marble room, if you're looking to save money this isn't Zhug or Amba, but if you're looking for a good meal at a decent price point this delivers.

Yelp
The ambiance is so beautiful. The layout of the restaurant, the music, lighting and decor sets a smooth atmosphere. Our server Dylan was amazing and a joy to our table. We celebrated my 40th birthday at Kiln while visiting from Miami, I brought my family and friends with me. We tried many things on the menu. Lamb chicken steak potatoes fish, was all beautifully prepared however most things lacked salt and were just bland. Outside of the mushroom tarte and meatballs (that were exceptional) most things were just ok. I ordered a cake with my dinner from Luna that they brought out frozen which is a big no no especially considering the $60 price tag for a mini cake it should've been ready for my party to consume. I'm guessing it would've been amazing if it were room temp and sliceable. It was pleasant and beautiful, but I'm not sure I'll return.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Monday with a reservation and it was packed! We were seated promptly at a corner table. My immediate impression was that the tables were quite cramped , with the room appearing as if they tried to fit as many tables as possible. Once seated, our server came by soon after and offered us menus and help with any questions. Very friendly and attentive! The menu was expansive, but I would have to say not as many dishes piqued my interest as did the menus at Doug Katz's other restaurants. We ordered 6 dishes for our party of 2 as per our servers recommendations and left stuffed! The popovers, cabbage rolls, and steak tips were delicious! The fried chicken livers were a bit heavy and overly rich and needed something to refresh the palate a bit more between bites. I also thought the cocktail menu lacked creativity, which I guess is reasonable since the menu seems to be highlighting wines over cocktails. Overall, the dining experience was satisfying and our servers were great! The ambiance was mid, and the menu doesn't beg me to come back too soon.

Yelp
We came here for Valentine's Day because of a recommendation from a friend. The restaurant was very cute inside and offered low lighting giving an intimate vibe. Perfect for a date night! Plateware was also adorable. We tried a little of everything as they have a lot of shared plates available. We also tried the baked Alaska which we heard they are known for! It was a bit sweet for my liking BUT still delicious. The broccolini had mini lemon things on it which were delicious and paired perfect with the veggie. Our server was attentive and checked on us often. If their menu rotates, we will be back to try new items...as we tried just about everything they offer.

Yelp
Make a reservation, this place is still new and popular! Nice minimalist classy modern vibes. I love that they have regular tables and also some booth seatings (the booth creates more romantic vibes but also a little bit more casual and comfy which i was a huge fan of). Our absolute favorites were the popovers and mushroom tartlets. The popovers were light and airy and had a good crunch but soft inside. The buttery and jam with it was a perfect bite. Must get. The mushrooms were savory and created a perfect bite with the puff pastry and I could've eaten the whole plate myself! The ricotta dumplings are creative and I enjoy the pine nuts with it, however it really is quite dense. I was good with having tried it but probably won't order again unless I come with a big group. We didn't finish it. The squash could have had a little bit more flavor and I expected it to be more creamy but it was quite stringy which is fine but did surprise me (maybe it included the center piece of the squash) Did not enjoy the baked Alaska dessert but it was the first time I've ever tried one. The cake was rock hard and the flavors didn't seem to mesh well. I was excited to order it because of the pistachios but since the cake is half the dish we could barely eat it. Overall we enjoyed the ambiance and had great service and loved the creative menus. Will definitely come back and reorder some of the same dishes but not all.

Yelp
Fantastic addition to The Van Aken District in Shaker Heights! Love to see a higher end dinging option here! Kiln is a 5 star experience all around. Beautiful atmosphere, attentive service and knock out food. We are entirely too much, but absolutely enjoyed all of our choices. Started with the crudité which was flavorful, although perhaps could've been served with some more veggies or naan. My friend loved the Char, while I thought the ribeye was one of the best I've eaten in some time. We then capped off with a huge portion of apple crisp, just like grandma used to make, YUM!

The ambiance is wonderful, but the food doesn't stand out or offer anything memorable.

Yelp
First time here and we were immediately greeted with a smile from the hostess as well as an offer to check our coats. We sat upstairs (which I preferred based on appeal) and noticed an expansive and attractive outdoor area to dine during the warm weather months. The lighting was perfect and the soft music really set the tone for the experience ahead. Our waitress was very helpful with answering our questions as well has recommending some of her favorites. We began with an order of Popovers served with strawberry jam and soft butter and Mushroom Tartlet. The popovers were very light, airy, and delicate. Mushroom tartlets had great flavor but the chive overpowered any mushroom flavor. I would order both again. Mussels in a tomato sauce and grilled bread were next. Each mussel tasted fresh and were all open. The bread was a bit too crispy for my liking but the sauce made up for it. The sauce was very garlicky and silky and a perfect way to soften the crispy bread. Don't let the fennel on the menu dissuade you from this dish as my wife and I did not taste any hint of fennel in our sauce. Next were Ricotta Dumplings, Broccolini, and Steak Tips. Ricotta dumplings were served in a pesto sauce that was phenomenal. Perfect ratio of garlic and basil as well as a hint of lemon. The dumplings were great but a little doughy (reminiscent of a gnocchi). Broccolini was served with fig, kumquat, and almonds. The broccolini itself was not a home run until you combined it with the kumquat, fig, and almonds. One of the least favorite dishes was the steak tips. This was served with pearl onion, carrot, and a burgundy jus. Our particular steak was overcooked and underseasoned. Because of this and the minimal amount of sauce, this dish ate drier than you would expect. Baked Alaska was our dessert and this was our least favorite of the evening. The dessert presented well but was underwhelming. Under the mound of whipped cream and ice cream, the cake was somehow dry and crumbly. I would not order this again. Kiln was wonderful and the service was top notch. I can't wait to go back and try the rest of their menu.

Yelp
Great service, great food, great drinks! Highly recommend the mushroom tartlets and char. Meatballs were finely ground and pesto fresh.

Yelp
Drinks were fantastic. Service was great. Love the vibe in the restaurant. Not too loud. I would have to say the food was good, there were a few dishes I felt were lacking something...just can't put my finger on what. The ricotta dumplings were ok, same with the crispy chicken livers (and i typically love crispy chicken livers...) the spinach salad was simple. The parisian potatoes were lacking on flavor and just on the slightly undercooked side of things....Not bad, but not fantastic. Now, the really good things...(other than the drinks)...the pork chop was excellent!! So were the pop overs, and i could consume those daily. The apple tart tasted freshly made, was very good as well.

Galit A.

Yelp
Just had the most wonderful birthday dinner at Kiln! Mushroom tartlets and mussels were the highlight of the meal for me. The arctic char underwhelmed, being somewhat bland. But the baked Alaska is better than any I can remember from childhood. Very well balanced with the cake, jam, and nuts. And the Pinot Noir was beautiful. Our server (Landon?) was impeccable. Thank you!

Eric W.

Yelp
Everything went well. Our waitress was phenomenal and the food was some of the best and most interesting I've had in years. Very cool space. It was truly an exceptional experience.

Yelp
Doug Katz can't be beat! Kiln was an incredible expansion to the already great restaurants, Zhug & Amba. We started with the Juliep & Bubbly with the popovers. You would do yourself a disservice not getting the popovers. We then had the chicken, braised greens and butternut squash. All fantastic. Saving dessert for next time but already looking forward to the Baked Alaska. Service was great, and quick. Ambiance was nice and the upstairs bar was even better! Will be back.

Jenna L.

Yelp
This might be my new favorite restaurant in Cleveland. Chef Doug Katz never disappoints and I love how in any of his restaurants, I always see him interacting with customers and that goes a long way. The space is beautiful, upstairs is gorgeous as well, service fantastic, and every single thing we ordered on the menu was absolutely delicious. We ordered the bibb salad, mushroom tartlets, ricotta dumplings, soup bread, pop overs, vegetable tian, steak bites, and Parisienne potatoes and would recommend all of it.

John I.

Yelp
Terrific restaurant that I'll definitely return to when in the Cleveland area. Our group tried numerous items and none disappointed. Ambiance was perfect and servers were hardworking and knowledgeable. I struggled a little with the wine list but their prices are very fair and I tried a couple new ones that we all enjoyed. Met the chef later that night (Griffin, I think?) - very humble and engaging young man. Again, we'll be back!

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere, clear, spare, elegant, clean lines, fresh flowers on the table. The staff is impeccably trained. We shared the bib salad- Loved the sumac, leek and tarragon flavors . The char was perfection. And where else can you find chicken livers with fruit compote? Our matriarch's favorite. We all loved Fire and love Kiln just as much. Thank you!

Beth N.

Yelp
On the plus side the ambiance is modern and the service was good. We shared the mushroom tarts and they were cheesy and very good. For the main course we had the meatballs, the roasted chicken breast and scalloped potatoes. We did share everything but there were only 3 meatballs and one sliced chicken breast. The arugula on top of the meatballs was really just a garnish, not a salad as is common with chicken Milanese. The chicken sat on top of about 1/3 cup of braised beans and carrots. It was tasty and well cooked. The scalloped potatoes were drenched in cheese with even more parm on top. For us it was too much. I would call it potato au gratin. All in all the food was okay, not nearly as good as the other two local restaurants by the same owner, and much more pricey. For the food I just described and two cocktails with tip we spent almost $160. I don't mind paying for good service and good cocktails that I can't make at home but I can make better roasted chicken and scalloped potatoes at home for 10 people for the $51 that portion of the meal costs. I have to agree with another reviewer that said it is more like home cooked food and not elevated enough-not for that price. The trend of selling everything individually and calling it shareable is very expensive for the diners that benefits the restaurant greatly, I mean, who would pay $69 for a chicken breast, three meatballs and scalloped potatoes? Oh wait! I just did. Probably not making that mistake again.

Ann Marie C.

Yelp
Was so excited to try this new restaurant and it did not disappoint!!! From the moment I walked through the door the staff were friendly and amazing!!! Service was excellent! Cocktails were very tasty, especially the margarita! The food was divine!!! We shared the salmon, chicken and the greens! Loved it all! Definitely will be back! Special shout out to our server Susie! Such fabulous service with a lovely smile!

Deborah B.

Yelp
Our first visit to kiln did not disappoint. We had a great table upstairs, the vibe was really nice. We had an attentive server who answered lots of menu questions. The menu has many different choices, almost too many to choose from, with lots of interesting flavors and spice combinations. Four of us shared seven dishes, which was plenty of food for our party. We had one vegetarian in the group, and there were many options that were also enjoyed by the meat eaters. A great addition to the food scene on Cleveland's east side.

Robert S.

Yelp
Excellent food and service Pr Ives over the top $16 for a glass of Ohio wine Baked Alaska extraordinary for extraordinary price

Vance K.

Yelp
Yum! Everything was delicious and service was great. I love the eggs mayonnaise and the dumplings

Yelp
Awesome restaurant. Went with a large group and tried basically everything on the menu. Everything tasted great. Would come back for sure

Patricia S.

Yelp
Excellent service We loved the Mussels and Arctic Char Lively ambiance Upstairs was quieter Owner/chef Doug Katz was a wonderful engaging host

Sam H.

Yelp
$17 for a bagged spinach, a few sprigs of frisée, sliced raw white mushrooms and tasty but unsatisfying bacon tomato dressing "salad" that we had to toss ourselves? Sorry but i expect my food ready to eat.

Mary F.

Yelp
Sat at bar and the whole bar was filled ...service was not great and for only 2 bartenders :( food took forever to get got 2 of our dishes and then had to wait another 20min for the rest when we put it in all at one time. When we asked for the check took forever to get checked out had to ask bartender to please check us out . Seriously you need more bartenders no one likes to wait that long for food or their check !

Cyndiee O.

Yelp
Decor A+, Ambiance A+, Food A+. Wonderful selection of small and large plates, and a great selection of gluten free and vegetarian options.

Nicholas B.

Yelp
The food was great! One of my favorite restaurants in Cleveland. I will defiantly go again!

Jim R.

Yelp
There has been a lot of excitement over the opening of another Doug Katz restaurant. Zhug and Amba are two of my favorites. So we were very excited to be able to secure a dinner reservation. I was disappointed with the visit. Service was great. I love the look and decor of the restaurant, however the food did not live up to the hype. The bibb lettuce salad was OK, but not exceptional. Quite frankly, I make a better dinner salad at home. Now, in all fairness, we didn't order any entrées, but some shareable plates and again there was nothing exceptional about them. The beef meatballs were good. Probably the best thing we ordered. The spoon bread was not to our liking. Flavorful but something about it. missed the mark and we left half of it at the table. We were going to order an additional plate of shareable's, but decided to go straight to dessert as the first two plates did not impress us. The baked Alaska was great. So was the café latte and the decaf coffee. Maybe we will have a better experience next time.
