This store is packed full of alcohol. When in search of spirits to drink for a party, this is such a good thing. Shinju Sushi, a sushi restaurant which is located a couple of blocks down the street does not serve liquor, and is BYOB, so I always make sure to stop here for sake. They do not disappoint in that department. I've asked the staff for suggestions on wines for parties and they have not disappointed. The prices are a bit high, but some I know just call that the premium of Hyde Park. The patrons range from twenty somethings getting refills for a kegger for a frat party (not stereotyping either, on one visit, that's what they told me they were doing and then invited me to said party, awesomeness), to ladies who lunch picking up wine for houseguests, to the average person who just wants something strong to go on a bender. Unlike Binny's which is a short distance away, this store is open later and if you need help carrying things to the car, they will always oblige and do so without tip.
A few times I've come in to witness them giving out samples of something, and while I always try to taste to see what the new offering is, I usually don't because the staff always want to see my ID. I mean, come on...I'm not that much older than 21, BUT I remember when a teenage Ashley C. would try to sneak in with my mom, the clerk with the glasses would yell at me in his best Michael Clarke Duncan in Planet of the Apes voice to leave. I'm past those days, and that clerk is long gone. Thank goodness, because that dude was SCARY. Anyway, off topic...
So they offer tastings and samples to educate those interested in wine. They also offer samples of gin, vodka and other liquors. Part of me is waiting for them to offer samples of that $500 a bottle stuff that they keep behind the glass..but I think that I shouldn't hold my breath waiting on that one.
Parking here can be a bit dicey, as people going to the Harold's, the Chase Bank, the Laundromat, Cedars of Lebanon, Hyde Park Produce, CVS and Leona's all have to park in the same lot. Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings especially can be a pain. So just be careful and ready for slight urging of road rage as (stereotype is coming) most people who live in Hyde Park long term cannot drive. They need tractor trailer size space to back out of a space, or want to ride in reverse the entire length of the parking lot for an empty space...etc.
Add in alcohol to this equation and yep, Houston, you might have a problem.
I've never had any bad experiences here, just a bit of a situation waiting at the checkout, but they seem to have gotten a bit speedier with it. They take debit, credit all that, just make sure you have that ID. If not, it's gonna be a problem and who knows, that man with the glasses just might return to yell at you. LEEEAAAVVVEEEE!!!!!!
