Traditional and modern cafés to visit in Tokyo | Eater

"A formal asadō experience that foregrounds the ritualized preparation of ceremonial matcha: powdered, high-quality green tea leaves prepared with precise movements, traditional tools, and an emphasis on mindfulness. The session connects participants to tea's long history in Japan — introduced from China in the 700s — and highlights the cultural and ceremonial significance of green tea in its most refined form." - Vox Creative

A true highlight of our Japan trip! We booked the first time slot at 9 AM, which we highly recommend – it was so peaceful and quiet, making the experience even more special. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming. We women got to choose a kimono and had our hair beautifully styled, while the men also wore traditional kimonos. The tea ceremony itself was lovely and very well explained by the host. They took photos throughout, which was a great bonus. Afterwards, we could keep wearing the kimonos all day until 6 PM – such a unique way to enjoy the rest of the day. A beautiful, serene, and truly cultural experience. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful experience at the tea ceremony, it was very fun being able to choose your kimono and getting all pampered for the ceremony. It was very interesting to learn more about it and witness all the processes as well as learning how to do it ourselves. Our host Mika was the nicest, she was interested in knowing about each of us and was very attentive to us.

10/10 experience! The ladies helping you get dressed in the kimono were friendly, but busy as they had an endless stream of people to dress and undress. The host of the tea ceremony was very friendly and funny during our ceremony. She was very knowledgeable about the ceremony's history! The atmosphere is wonderful all around and you have plenty of time to take pictures in the kimono and in their garden area!

It was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming, guiding us through each step of the ceremony with patience and deep respect for the tradition. Their explanations were clear and engaging, allowing us to fully appreciate the cultural significance of every movement and ritual. The atmosphere was serene and intimate, making it easy to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the moment. The tea itself was exquisite, prepared with such precision and care. It wasn’t just about drinking tea—it was about mindfulness, harmony, and a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. This experience was one of the highlights of my time in Kyoto, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Whether you’re familiar with the tea ceremony or a complete beginner, you’ll leave with a newfound respect for this beautiful tradition. Definitely a must-do!

Participating in the tea ceremony was one of the most beautiful and meaningful experiences I’ve had. From the moment I walked in, I felt transported—dressed in a traditional kimono and guided with care and respect through every step of this centuries-old ritual. The staff were warm, knowledgeable, and deeply committed to preserving Japanese culture. Every detail, from the serene setting to the graceful preparation of the tea, felt purposeful and profound. It wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a moment of peace, reflection, and connection. Mayumi did an excellent job leading us through the ceremony and making us comfortable. If you’re in Kyoto and looking for an experience that’s truly authentic and emotionally resonant, don’t miss this. It’s not just something to check off a list—it’s something you’ll carry with you long after your trip is over.

We had the best time at the Maikoya tea ceremony. As a group of 6 we were able to book a private ceremony with Majumi-san (I hope I got the name right) and it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We got to choose our kimonos for ourselves and even got our hair done, girlhood at its finest! ✨🫶 as a bigger girl, I still had plenty of options. The ceremony itself offered a lot of new things to learn and it was so cool that we got to prepare our own matcha tea. Our host also took plenty of pictures of us and was a very sweet person. I would highly recommend this activity to learn more about this central ceremony in Japanese culture and experience it for yourself!

We are a group of five and we joined the " private tour of kimono with tea ceremony", the location is great , easy to find it. We arrived at the morning and there were staff help you through the whole process from selecting and dressing the kimono , the whole process is quick , just around 30 mins . Then we entered a private Japanese room , the tea ceremony teacher is very nice and friendly , she first tells us about the history and the philosophy of tea ceremony , then she guides us one by one to make the matcha and the way to drink it properly. She also helps us take a lot of videos and photos, we really enjoy the ceremony , it's such a great experience . Thank you for the staff and the teacher once again .

It was everything and more! Our host had the softest, cutest voice that was full of love for what she does. She gave a history lesson behind Japan's tea ceremonies in the warmest way... the whole room was captivated. During her purification, all I could hear was a gentle theme song playing in the background... I'm my head lol. All in all, the experience was the perfect grand-finale to end my Nippon trip.
