Traditional and modern cafés to visit in Tokyo | Eater

"A formal asadō experience that foregrounds the ritualized preparation of ceremonial matcha: powdered, high-quality green tea leaves prepared with precise movements, traditional tools, and an emphasis on mindfulness. The session connects participants to tea's long history in Japan — introduced from China in the 700s — and highlights the cultural and ceremonial significance of green tea in its most refined form." - Vox Creative

I had a fantastic time here. There were plenty of lovely kimonos to pick from and the ladies do your hair for you. The tea ceremony itself is very calm and relaxing and we learnt a brief history of the tea ceremony as well as performing it. Afterwards there's a lovely little garden area to take photo. You can keep your kinono on for the day if you wish and bring it back before they close. Everyone was very helpful and friendly, it was a great experience. Cannot recommend this place enough! Make sure you book in advance as it gets sold out.

No doubt that this was once of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Dressing in a kimono and having somebody do your hair is so special and then being guided through the history of the tea ceremony was beautiful. There is so much importance in each movement and process and your guide engages you with every step. And then you get to make your own, which is so much fun. And when it’s all over, you go into their lovely garden and your guide takes photos of you. I combined the ticket it with the Samurai museum, which is well worth doing.

Sana san was AMAZING! My husband and I went for a private tea ceremony and she took so many amazing pictures and was extremely kind. The ceremony is a shortened version, where she told us all about the history. Matcha was very high quality and delicious. Very interesting! Would do again for certain.

It was such a lovely experience. It made our trip special. It’s such a unique moment to experience a tea cerimony wearing a kimono. It will be in our memories forever. The staff was helpful and friendly, they even styled our hair. Our host Sono was amazing! She helped us understand the historic meaning of the tea cerimony with a touch of fun! Thank you so so much 💞

Very fun and educational experience. The entire staff at Maikoya was incredibly efficient and meticulous with dressing you up in your chosen kimono/obi combination (I'd assume the same went for the men and their yukata). In addition, our chado host Mika-san was great, entertaining, and explained the cultural significance of the ceremony to the group very well.

We had such a great experience the host was wonderful explained about the origin of the ceremony and the sequence of her actions. It was interesting and educating. Our host English was wonderful and easy to understand. We highly recommend this experience. The Kimonos are beautiful and it was hard to choose from all of them. Thank you for a wonderful time.

We had the most wonderful experience at the tea ceremony hosted by Dodo. From the moment it began, the atmosphere felt calm, welcoming, and beautifully authentic. Dodo guided us through each step with such grace and knowledge, making it easy to relax and fully appreciate the tradition behind the ceremony. The attention to detail, from the setting to the preparation, was truly special. Very grateful for the experience. Highly recommend to everyone!

Definitely one in a lifetime experience!! We go to dress up in beautiful Kimonos before the ceremony began. We were taken to separate (male & female) changing rooms, where we got to select our Kimonos. There were helpers inside who were efficient and did hair and tied Kimonos in traditional way. Our host Mika was excellent. Very friendly and informative. Being in traditional attire helps you connect and immerse in the culture. It wasn't just about drinking tea, it was about learning the history and learning the techniques of making and drinking tea authentic way. Highly recommend it to anyone travelling to Kyoto!!
