Traditional and modern cafés to visit in Tokyo | Eater

"A formal asadō experience that foregrounds the ritualized preparation of ceremonial matcha: powdered, high-quality green tea leaves prepared with precise movements, traditional tools, and an emphasis on mindfulness. The session connects participants to tea's long history in Japan — introduced from China in the 700s — and highlights the cultural and ceremonial significance of green tea in its most refined form." - Vox Creative

We booked a private tea ceremony in Kyoto for 9 people and we all had a blast! One of our favorite things that we did during our trip to Japan. The hosts were very friendly and our tea instructor June was very knowledgeable, respectful and kind. We were able to wear our kimonos after the ceremony for a few hours afterwards. My son proposed to his girlfriend in the gardens. It was a beautiful and quiet setting that made it perfect for them. I highly recommend you do the tea ceremony in kimonos this during your visit to Kyoto.

I had a fantastic time here. There were plenty of lovely kimonos to pick from and the ladies do your hair for you. The tea ceremony itself is very calm and relaxing and we learnt a brief history of the tea ceremony as well as performing it. Afterwards there's a lovely little garden area to take photo. You can keep your kinono on for the day if you wish and bring it back before they close. Everyone was very helpful and friendly, it was a great experience. Cannot recommend this place enough! Make sure you book in advance as it gets sold out.

We love this experience!! This is my second time here and I love it. They help you get dressed in a traditional kimono and then they walk you through a traditional tea ceremony. It’s amazing and everyone is so sweet! You definitely should come here if you’re looking for a traditional tea ceremony.

This was our first visit to Japan and I had no expectations going in. Let me just say that this experience was one of the highlights of our family trip! From the time we walked in, we were made to feel welcome. The people who helped us choose our kimonos, dressed us, and did our hair were so professional and talented. We all felt comfortable and beautiful. Amy, our guide, was very personable and kept everyone engaged. It was fascinating to learn the history and participate in this ancient ceremony with others from around the world. I especially love that she explained that dressing up and being interested was not considered cultural appropriation, but that we were being invited as guests for cultural appreciation. The tea and sweets were delicious and hyper-local. I also appreciate that we were able to visit on a weekend, which was the only time we would be in Kyoto. When we were finished, Nishiki Market was mere steps away. I 1000% recommend Maikoya Nishiki Kimono Tea Ceremony to anyone and everyone. It’s a treasure.

This was one of my favorite moments in Kyoto. It was so informative, interesting, and engaging. This was an abbreviated tea ceremony, as a full length on is closer to I think 2 hours, we were told. Having gotten this preview, however, I would love to one day do a full length ceremony. The sweets and matcha were wonderful too. Before enjoying the sweets, we were asked about allergies, which I appreciated since I’m celiac (I had confirmed prior, but felt especially reassured that they checked again in the moment, detailing the different ingredients). Having the experience of getting dressed in kimono was really worth it. Seeing the intricacy that goes into it was really incredible, and the staff were incredibly patient and helpful. There was time after the ceremony for photos which was pleasant as well (just keep the volume down as other groups will be having their experience after you!). My only regret is I did this the morning I left Kyoto, so I was not able to wear my kimono around town, which is an option as long as you return it by closing (which I believe they said is 6pm). Please enjoy this wonderful experience!

FANTASTIC tea ceremony and kimono experience. This was my second trip to Japan and a perfect 90 min immersive experience. The kimonos were beautiful to choose from, they do your hair all pretty, then it's time for the tea ceremony. Our group had maybe 10-12 people? Our guide was AMAZING!!! She was funny, taught us a lot about the history of tea ceremonies, the meaning behind the tradition, so informative and was humorous in her presentation as well. Loved her! The sweets and matcha were delicious, and it was beautiful and lovely to take a moment, slow down, be present, and enjoy. Everyone offered to take many photos of each other in our beautiful kimonos! HIGHLY recommend this experience!!!

No doubt that this was once of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Dressing in a kimono and having somebody do your hair is so special and then being guided through the history of the tea ceremony was beautiful. There is so much importance in each movement and process and your guide engages you with every step. And then you get to make your own, which is so much fun. And when it’s all over, you go into their lovely garden and your guide takes photos of you. I combined the ticket it with the Samurai museum, which is well worth doing.

We booked this as part of the package with the samurai museum. I would say that the samurai museum really was nothing more than okay - but the tea making ceremony and kimono experience was amazing. My daughter and I both enjoyed it very much.. they made us feel like princesses for a day, we appreciated the silence of the authenticity of the tea ceremony. Definitely a highlight of activities.
