A Pair of French Landmarks Reopen in Winnetka and Eight More Openings - Eater Chicago

"Kindred, an upscale new restaurant with an open-fire focused menu from Chicago hospitality veteran Michael Carroll, will open Saturday, May 14, in the western suburbs, according to a rep. It’s from Tom Trenta, the owner of live music venue Elmhurst Hall and local bar Ever Onward, and will feature dishes such as fire-grilled octopus (celery chimichurri, olives, romesco) and ratatouille cassoulet (smoked eggplant, summer squash, tomato, white beans). Until two years ago, Carroll was a co-owner of Band of Bohemia, the world’s first Michelin-starred brewpub, which temporarily closed in July 2020 after former employees made allegations that restaurant leadership fostered a toxic work environment while mishandling operations during the pandemic. At the time, Carroll and then-business partner Craig Sindelar denied many of the allegations. Band of Bohemia closed permanently three months later. Kindred, 119 N. York in Elmhurst, Open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday." - Naomi Waxman

What a cute little town for date night ❤️ Kindred opened only 2 months ago by owner Tom Trenta. He's joined by Chef Michael Carroll previously from Band of Bohemia and Alinea ! This new spot cooks up fresh meats & seafood on a 600-degree open wood-fire grill. It's all grilled to perfection with the unique flavors from the wood-fire - juicy and tender through and through My biggest highlights were the lamb lollipop, grilled trout, & octopus. Nothing beats the crispy charred skin on the trout + completely de-boned. Flavors in the octopus were great, especially the Romesco & celery chimichurri I loved that the tartar had crispy garlic chips, mushrooms, and shallots. It was on a grilled rye bread that was really aromatic & had a great chew. Lastly don't forget their fudgy chocolate mousse cake! It's not made in-house but still pretty good I've never been to this area so it was a pleasant surprise how cute this area was! Make a day out of it by going to the movies or watching a show More on Instagram @midwestmunching

Delicious drinks, fabulous food and city chic vibes. Portion size was big and everybody left full. Favorite items were the octopus, duck and steak! Everything grilled over an open flame. Definitely an awesome date night spot!

I suspect that some of our experience at Kindred was "new restaurant" stuff, but -- as much as I want this place to succeed -- the experience we had shows there is growth needed before Kindred is worth the prices they're charging. We dined with Kindred on Fathers' Day; my wife and I were gifted a night out while the kids tended themselves. To be clear -- it wasn't overly busy. We got a nice table outside and other tables were empty (as was the inside). We had a pleasant server, opened with wine, and asked about suggested appetizers. "The carrots," she said. "Roasted for 6 hours." We also got the octopus. Neither were great. The carrots were a disaster. They weren't roasted for 6 hours. Maybe microwaved. They weren't even peeled or cleaned well. It set a bad tone. I had the steak, ordered medium-rare, delivered medium-well to well. The server handled it with grace, and they packed up the old steak for us and replaced it. Second round was good, but the combo of the bizarrely bad carrots appetizer and the overcooked steak colored the experience for us. Things just felt sloppy and style undeveloped. Plating was messy; heavy on sauces with the features hidden under sides (especially true for the octopus). The steak was sliced in a pretty fashion; the octopus served as a single, charred tentacle. It was just inconsistent. We'll go back. But we may give it a few months to get their feet under them.

Great service, ambiance and incredible food!! We were so excited to try it out after learning that everything is cooked on an open flame. First, we had drinks- the house wine and the spicy orange margherita (sooo good!). Then, we had the hangar steak and lamb lollipops. Everything was cooked to perfection and the combo of flavors was creative and complemented each other so well. My husband was a little hungry still, so next time we’d get a side as well. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse which is made in house and it was outstanding!! We are excited to come back again and love that the menu is truly seasonal and will be changing every three months.

Ordered apps and drinks. Pathetic serving sizes for the price. Prawns were not anywhere near "fire roasted"; undercooked. Who undercooks shrimp? Slow roasted carrots are hilarious. Tasty, but LOL. Beets were good but absolutely not $15 worth. Carrot hummus was good but TINY. Our party ordered 3 of the same drink and they all tasted different. One was awful. Do people actually dine here more than once?
