Yelp
The crown has fallen within the Kingdom of Dumplings. Located on a stretch of Taraval Street in San Francisco's Parkside neighborhood, Kingdom of Dumplings is just one of a handful of restaurants that specialize in Xiao Long Baos, those delectable dumplings that are filled with a protein of your choice and hot soup and are steamed to perfection. After reading an article written by one of the talented food writers at the San Francisco Chronicle that profiled the numerous restaurants that specialize in these soup dumplings that inhabit Taraval Street, I made it my mission to visit each of them one by one. Unfortunately this recent experience at Kingdom of Dumplings made me seriously question this decision to try Kingdom of Dumplings first, as everything from their food to their lackluster service to their less than pleasing interior dining room seriously left me and dining mates wanting more. On a recent weekend afternoon a group of four of us were driving through the Sunset and Parkside neighborhoods looking for a restaurant to enjoy a lunchtime meal, and someone in my party suggested we see what was available along Taraval Street. Knowing that they were the home to a multitude of Chinese restaurants that specialize in dumplings, we drove up and down Taraval Street, there just happened to be a parking space that opened right in front of Kingdom of Dumplings, and we took that as a sign and decided to dine here for lunch. They were busy, but not super busy that they couldn't see our table of four people right away in their small dining room.
The menu at Kingdom of Dumplings is separated into sections such as Lasted New Dishes, Dumplings (12), Dim Sum, Soup Noodle, Soup Wide Rice Noodle & Soup QQ Noodle, Desserts and Drinks. Since some of their menu items had images to go with their names, we decided to order things based on the images, which would turn out to be a mistake, as nothing looked like the images of the food featured on their menu. Case in point, we ordered their menu item that was numbered 3 that was named their Five Spicy Marinated Beef, we also ordered their 50, which were their signature Shanghai Soup Dumplings, their number 51, which were their Shanghai Pan Fried Soup Dumplings, and their number 57, which were their Beef Roll Pancakes. We also requested to order a tea pot of warm water, of which they do charge during lunch hours, which most Chinese restaurants do, so we smartly bring our own tea bag to put in the teapot so we are charged slightly less. The first dish to come out were our Five Spicy Marinated Beef and they looked nothing like the image on their menu. They were cold, flavorless, and doused with oyster sauce which made the entire dish overly salty. The second dish to come out were our Shanghai Pan Fried Soup Dumplings, and they come four on a plate, but the image on their menu did feature six for some reason. These dumplings were an ooey gooey mess that did not resemble anything that was featured on their menu, with the inside of the dumpling lacking in any depth or flavor.
For our third and forth dishes, they were better, but in no way reflective of what good Chinese cuisine from Taiwan and the Shanghai regions should be. Our Shanghai Soup Dumplings were decent and warm to the touch but still lacked those fresh ingredients that would normally contribute to the overall taste of this signature entrée. And their Beef Roll Pancakes, which was our best dish of our meal as they had the best ingredients which made them the biggest entree that we were able to enjoy, but it too did not resemble the image on their menu. Their service too was lacking in any energy as when we requested that they fill our teapot with more hot water, they literally emptied out the entire contents of our tea leaves and refilled it with more hot water, normally they just refill the teapot with hot water or bring a hot water kettle to refill it at your table. I have never experienced that before with a teapot as emptying the contents served no purpose but to remove the tea leaves we brought ourselves. Our total bill was roughly 32 dollars, which was reasonable, but our server questioned if four dishes was enough for our party when we ordered. After having the four dishes we had this afternoon at Kingdom of Dumpling, I am so glad we only ordered those four, as if this is what is representative of the rest of the food that is being served here. I will gladly try any of their nearby competitors if they are even halfway better, as I can see clearly that the kingdom is crumbling real fast and I fear not even a knight in shining armor can save them!
