Kissel is my first choice when ever I visit Oakland. It is such a great experience. The hotel is super clean and super nice and the front desk staff are warm and welcoming. The rooms are very comfortable and I also choose one with a terrace. Beds are so comfy and bathrooms are modern. The restaurant Otto has a great bar and the breakfast is amazing. I love it here and hope it never changes.

Google
The rooms are very clean with an understated modern appeal. The bed was deliciously comfortable. The restaurant, Otto, serves a limited but thoughtful and tasty menu. I enjoyed my stay. I can't comment on the price as my room was arranged as part of a conference I was attending.

We were warmly greeted by Marva and Aaron during check-in. Both were friendly and made us feel welcome. Marva took the time to explain all the perks we were entitled to as Hyatt Discoverist members, while Aaron went over the details of our reservation. Since our 2-night stay was split—one night with points and the second paid out-of-pocket—we were kindly upgraded to a room with a patio. Our room and bathroom were clean and well-maintained, which made for a comfortable stay. The gym was also a nice surprise—well-sized, with decent equipment and weights. The only minor issue we encountered was the presence of some gnats in the lobby and dining area. Overall, though, the service was excellent and our stay was very enjoyable. A special thank you to Aaron for mailing out my complimentary postcard since I couldn't find a nearby mailbox. Thanks, Aaron!

We love this hotel in the middle of Oakland. Everything was perfect. Bethany is the best front desk person any hotel can wish for. She is like an old friend that you can depend on. Upgraded me as a globlist and explained all the benefits. Will definitely go back if in the area.

Google
Great hotel, luxury-wise. The only reason I'm giving this rating is the obscene (and undisclosed until you check in) parking and "resort" fees. If you get there early enough in the day, sure, you can look around nearby for self-park, but get in late enough and you don't feel entirely comfortable doing so in that area. The resort fee is just a scam as are all resort fees.

Google
Massive kudos to the staff at the Kissel. Ruby at the front desk, Emily and Angie at the Otto Kitchen, and Armando valeting. You could see the kindness in their eyes and feel it in their service. The only thing I would say is the $27 daily resort fee and $55 pre tax ($66 post tax) daily valet parking rate felt pretty steep. Especially because the destination fee applies daily, but many of the benefits are only applicable once per stay.

The front desk was very accomodating.||Loved the firmness of the mattress, there were multiple soft pillows perfect amount since I use 4 pillows when I sleep or want to relax. Loved being able to relax in the soft robe provided for me. The room was the perfect size, not too small about medium sized. The A/C worked great as it was a warm day when checking in.||This is a definate do over stay.

Google
Kissel Uptown Oakland is a beautiful hotel that I highly recommend anyone to stay at while visiting the area. They give you 2 free waters and there's refillable water stations on each floor. The Front Desk staff was kind and knowledgeable. The rooms - modern, spacious, clean/cozy and the pillows - loved the pillows! I didn't get a chance to try the restaurant Ottos, but will definitely try next time! 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
I have stayed here a couple different times and have gone to Otto's restaurant in the lobby for dinner many times as well. Spectacular rooms, lobby, and staff. Aaron was very nice, respectful, kind and helpful. The valet staff is also very respectful and accommodating, and I truly appreciate that. Thank you, Kissel.

Yelp
If you are looking for a solid and clean hotel with a courteous staff in downtown Oakland , this is the place. It wants to be luxurious but the hallways leading to the rooms look dated and the carpet would benefit from a refresh. The rooms are neat and the bathrooms modern and well equipped. They will give you a $10 credit to spend on snacks at check in which is a nice touch. In summary, I enjoyed my stay which by the way did not break the bank and will come again, no problems. careful: expensive valet and day parking.

Yelp
Exceptional hotel in Oakland. Maybe I'm biased, but I was upgraded to a lovely room (I booked a king) with what I would call a patio on the 3rd floor. The fitness center is on this floor and if I was to be disappointed with anything it would be that for hotel of this size and location there were only 2 treadmills. Otherwise, the staff were super. The restaurant had really good food. The rooms were very clean and the bed was really comfy! The hotel also has water refill stations throughout! Loved that! I Lyft so I can't speak for parking! I have to come back here regularly and will definitely stay here again.

Yelp
I recently traveled to the area for work in this place was a nice 10 minute walk from my meeting space. The hotel itself was really great. I had no issues checking in at all. The attendant was super friendly and told me a bit about the hotel and the various amenities they had available. It's within walking distance to a couple of restaurants, though as always be aware of your surroundings. Otto had a decent breakfast selection, with typical fare. The overnight oats with fresh fruits were delicious. It's mixed oats and Chia seeds, which was nice and refreshing. I took an Uber here, so no issues with the parking.

Yelp
Monyani Dèmé soft campaign capsule collection 11/4 https://instagram.com/monyani.deme?igshid=Y2hqNzJzdHR6ZTdu I've been planning this for a couple of months, knew I wanted to shoot at Kissel. I came in one night looking to book, you can't book at front desk. Instead I scouted around the location for areas that were shoot ready. Called the next day and spoke with such a wonderful client relations rep/sales rep. Day of I came checked in muses and talents came as well, were able to get ready and shoot most of our scenes. Everyone from bar manager and bartenders, to front desk was so hospitable and accommodating. The only person I will say that made for almost a terrible experience all together was the Operations Manager. She approached me with such aggression and angst. Her tone, her body language even after explaining I spoke to multiple people and had paid for a room, had been there and was wrapping up within the hour she went even harder on her aggression. If policies have changed and everyone is saying something different outside of you, seems like maybe you didn't do a good job at on-rolling new protocols to your team and staff. Not a client issue :) I am happy to have gotten to experience this hotel although I didn't stay but I wouldn't book again and spend my own money. Thank you to everyone outside of the Operations Manager

Yelp
The parking service here is what is giving them 1 star. Your car may get damaged if parked here and the level of follow up and follow through is concerning!!! It's very unfortunate that the communication is absent after damages. Nobody should have to worry about their vehicle at an establishment like this where the staff are supposed to protect your vehicle, not cause damage to it!

Yelp
Friendly service, checkin was fast, good food, aesthetics and design is on point, comfy beds, clean/spacious/well-lit rooms, spacious/well-lit bathrooms (important for females who know how challenging putting on makeup in bad lighting is like), convenient and safe location close to many restaurants and Lake Merritt. I am a Hyatt cardholder and member and stay at many Hyatts around the world. This one is a great price point for a Hyatt unbound collection hotel. Only downside is valet is $52/night.

Yelp
I don't like to write negative reviews but this hotel has forced my hand. This hotel is shady...straight up. I'm a man of principal, honesty and I work too hard to get treated the way I have been. Let me get into it... On August 10th, I went to support a good friend of mine (Booziebrunch) for a brunch she was hosting. As most of you know, downtown Oakland is known for folks getting their cars broken into so I decided to valet my car since it was connected to the hotel. Upon returning later that night, I see the valet guys duct taping my driver side mirror due to them breaking it. I'm a patient man and Kissel seemed to be a good spot so I didn't get mad, I would let my insurance handle it and this would be fixed. No harm, no foul. Fast forward to today and they have STILL yet to contact me. They have given me and my insurance the run around and it is disheartening. I spent good money at their establishment and this is how they treat their customers? I don't live in the Bay Area anymore but if this keeps up, I plan on returning with my lawyer. This is a sad case and I will never return to this place. There is no sense of Oakland community here whatsoever.

Yelp
With the limited time that I stayed at Kissel I only needed to interact with the lobby employees and valet a few times. I will say this, the hotel is aesthetically pleasing and a hit for those that want a place so close to the heart of Oakland but the service was only subpar. During check in, I can see the difference in service because I was next to an older gentlemen that was possibly staying a few nights. The employee went through everything, the "rooftop bar" and their hours, the breakfast in the lobby (Otto's), and other amenities that the hotel had to offer. The lady that checked me in rarely spoke to me. In fact, when she handed me the door cards she didn't even tell me what room I was in or even told me anything about their wifi. When I inquired about the room number she said that it was written on the sleeve of the cards. Never did she tell me where the elevators were, nor did she say what time check out was, and I was a bit in disbelief with how little effort she put into her service. The room was clean, I'll give you that. The bathroom was large and spacious. I sure did love the shower. But I still couldn't shake the lack of courtesy from the front staff. The valet was great. The guys were very friendly and we were able to get our vehicle within a timely matter during check out. Would I stay again? Maybe if I shelled out $800/night I'll get better service. However, even if I did spent $300/night I should receive just the same hospitality during check in as anyone else because the industry is HOSPITALITY. Also, the "Rooftop bar" isn't on top of the Kissel. It's actually around the corner on the second floor. I didn't realize this until I spoke with another visitor and was a little disappointed with the lackluster view.

Yelp
PARKING Valet parking is quite expensive ($52/day) but there is flexibility on pricing for extended stays. CHECKIN Traditional payment methods accepted, no tap/electronic. Check-in speed was blazingly fast once the room became available. No additional fees for early check-in but our original booking still wasn't ready through 3pm. YMMV. SERVICE Excellent customer service!!! Aaron was professional, personable, & very knowledgable about the location's history. Hospitality is well-understood here and is consistent + timely even over the phone. A clear step above the service I've experienced at neighboring hotels in this area (Sonesta & Marriott to name a few). ELEVATORS Not the fastest, but spacious with multiple available. ROOM (suite) The room was GLORIOUS & well-appointed. It could easily pass for a luxurious apartment living space. The stock and attention to detail is nothing short of amazing: blackout roman shades, calming textured wallpaper, bubble-design chandelier, steel coffee table, suede sofa, hardwood flooring, fun patterned rugs and tons of picturesque design features. Functionally, it's just as strong and equipped with: Smart AC system & outlets, antibacterial phone, large steel work desk, outdoor seating, a HUGE armoire, and full-size mirrors. The courtyard and patio space was also really serene! The lounge chairs are perfectly positioned for stargazing or aimlessly watching planes takeoff. Minus a few cosmetic details (water damage; a stained sette) & nitpicks (cigarette butt on patio) the execution was perfect! BED The bedding was solid: premium sheets, cozy duvet, and soft feather-down pillows, but I recommend requesting additional foam down pillows if you prefer a denser profile. The mattress wasn't as supportive as I would've liked but it still provided a good nights sleep. The headboard is very functional, equipped with gold reading lights + motion sensitive night lights in the base. The nightstands have a very unique design and house plenty of outlets + usb ports for charging your devices while you sleep. BATH Bathroom fixtures are incredible... Opulent walk-in rainfall shower, sleek washroom sinks, sliding doors with chic wallpaper themes, 30" deep standalone spa tub with hand shower, and the icing on the cake...: Cottonelle professional series TP [best hotel brand] for your rump. The towels are on the smaller side, but they get the job done. There is also a very comfy bathrobe hidden away in the armoire. Essential Elements bath products are provided for your convenience and they smell quite good. TV Luxe entertainment setup with 2 LG HD LCD TV's. One in the common area (65"!) and the other in the bedroom, both mounted with stationary configurations. Despite the lack of motion with the mounts, there are plenty of adjustable seating options in the unit, so it works out. Chromecast integration is available along with basic programming. The remote control situation can be a bit awkward due to the TVs being positioned parallel in the same direction, but it's easy enough to workaround. Wi-Fi The (unencrypted) wifi throughput was underwhelming and ultimately led to cutting our staycation/workcation short. QoS was good (no disconnects) & I can cope with the status quo 25 Mbps up/down, but the wifi performance just fell extremely short in that respect: Nerd Stats: 11-18 Mbps down 16-19 Mbps up 0% packet loss 18-80 ms latency 3-45 ms jitter FOOD & DRINK Not DoorDash/UberEats friendly but the on-site restaurant provides room service & has a fairly deep menu. Entrées range $20-45 and the menu is labelled quite well for food allergy accommodations. I really enjoyed the Sea Bass entree & Roasted Pear ice cream. The room-service is a bit disorganized for a connected restaurant: the to-go containers weren't labelled (important for food allergies and/or those unfamiliar with the menu) or packaged properly with colder items on the bottom. The repurposed minibar fridge is very clever but not functional enough for our leftovers or drinks. NOISE Noise isolation between rooms is strong but sound leaks in pretty severely via the front door. The housekeeping carts & hallway conversation can be quite distracting and loud in that respect. Externally, there are some noisy aspects of this city that just can't be avoided: unhomed population, garbage collection, & motor-revving thru traffic. But the construction & orientation of this property does a great job at dampening the external noise. VERDICT Customer Service & accommodations that go above and beyond. The wifi could use an overhaul and was ultimately a dealbreaker due to the nature of our work, but it's a solid stay if you're here for leisure. I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the mood for a memorable hospitality experience & appreciate an elevated design aesthetic. 4.5/5

Yelp
I stayed here this past weekend for a conference. I took the train, and a Lyft to get to the hotel so I can't speak to parking other than it is expensive. My round trip train fare was equivalent to one over night parking ($52). Of note, the fee is increased for over sized vehicles. I believe it is approximately $70/ night. The service was amazing at the hotel. Everyone who I interacted with during check-in and the hotel restaurant were very friendly. Since I only stayed two nights, I opted out of housekeeping so I can't speak to their services. However, when I arrived at my hotel room it was spotless. Honestly, it shined. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. My only complaint is my room on the 7th floor faced the street, and I could hear the noise from below. Thankfully, I have an app that plays white noise which was helpful to block out the noise from outside. The hotel is close to several restaurants, and I felt safe walking at night. I had to be cognizant of my surroundings, but I felt ok to walk by myself.

Yelp
This review is low stars specifically bc they end room service at 9pm! I'm working in town and got in late and they offer nothing...no late night menu options or anything. You have to DoorDash or make do with the limited local options for food. A Hyatt property can certainly do better for its guests.

Yelp
Fast paced valet. When you arrive be prepared to exit your vehicle immediately because the entrance to the hotel and where the valet is is on a busy street. Getting the valet and checking in was a breeze. Modern building, elegant and clean. Friendly staff. Room was clean with cool ac. Would definitely book again if in the area.

Yelp
Solid. Good location for walkable access to Fox & Paramount theaters, restaurants and that section of town. Also not a tremendously long hike if you want to venture the other direction to Piedmont Ave or Temescal area. Hotel itself was stylish. Staff was very attentive and kind. Rooms were comfortable and also stylish. Decent price/value as well. No complaints.

Yelp
We were in town for an family event, but opted to stay in a centrally located place in Oakland. We needed an early check-in because our flight from Florida got in early. There was a charge of $50 to check in early that didn't start off well. The room was so small we had to wait on the other side of the bed to pass each other the room is a small as the refrigerator absolutely nothing fit in that which was unexpected. My husband needs medication that must to be refrigerated. Lucky that fit.. We could get a room in the back of the hotel with a view of some sort of garden, which was nice and quiet . On the positive side, the bed linens and everything was clean. The bed super comfortable. Pillows wonderful. It was a motion detector nightlight under the bed which was helpful in navigating to the bathroom. Since the windows actually did open, we have to for some fresh air, which was nice because the temperature was cool. The front desk staff was friendly and accommodating for all of our requests. The best thing for me was the door lock which I had seen on shark tank, created by a woman who had some issues in previous hotels for people pushing in this lock, kept the door closed, and I could appreciate that in Oakland.

Yelp
Went to see a show at the paramount, which is a quick walk from the Kissel. We found the hotel to be nice and clean and the people were nice. We didn't have drinks or food so can't touch on that. I would stay there again if I'm Oakland. Parking was pricey but convenient.

Yelp
Water torture. This random (clearly installed) drain in the ceiling of the bathroom shower dripped and echoed day and night. You could see from the water stain on the shower head that it has been doing that forever. In addition to that, the wedding, hosted by the hotel, raged past midnight and echoed into the central "courtyard"outside our room. It felt like we were at the reception. We got no sleep, basically our entire stay and came home exhausted. So disappointed. We should have stayed at Moxy down the street with our friends. They had no issues and the rooms were almost half the price.

Yelp
Cute and clean hotel. Loved the feel, the wallpaper, the neighborhood was fun with lots of food and drink options. Rooms were quiet, hotel had security, felt safe and secure here. Don't be fooled by some of the other reviews knocking the mini-fridge, we were able to fit leftovers and several water bottles in ours. Underbed lighting turns on when you get out of bed too! Only things I have to mention. Room service is great...when they answer the phone. Tried to get room service 3 separate times, someone only picked up the phone 1 of those times (and yes, that included us trying to call back several times over the course of 20 minutes each occasion). Parking is valet only. Car seemed safe and well taken care of. However, they have limited staff working valet, so if you are trying to pick up your car at a busy time, say 11am on Sunday, when everyone is checking out, it can take upwards of 45 minutes. The "rooftop" restaurant is separate from the hotel. You have to leave, go around the block, and into a separate building. Not a big deal, but saw several parties confused and looking for it. Would definitely stay here again.

Yelp
This newer boutique hotel is part of the Hyatt collection. I had high hopes based on photos, and although I wasn't completely disappointed, it did fall short. The decor is modern and looks great from afar, but close up, the details look sloppy. The standard 1 king bed room was tiny and cramped. They definitely have some growing pains to get through as well -- the most bothersome of which is the fly problem. The lobby area is filled with flies and other bugs. There were a few gnats inside the hotel room as well. Parking is terrible in this part of town, so best not to bring a car. If you do, it's $45 valet + $11.25 parking tax + tip, so you're spending $60+/day to park. The valet service is a third party and is hit or miss. Weekday mornings can take 15-25 minutes to get your car, so plan ahead so you're not late to work like I was the first day. Service in the evening when I was taking it out for dinner was super quick though, under 5 minutes. Drinks at the lobby bar and affiliated High 5ive weren't very good. High 5ive is advertised as the hotel rooftop bar, but it's on a different rooftop. The hotel is 7 stories, but the bar/kitchen is on the 3rd floor. The kitchen is connected to the hotel, but doesn't have a public walkway, so you have to go outside the hotel and around the corner to access it from a different entrance. Location isn't the nicest. There was a lot of city noise, which isn't unexpected. There was frequent yelling out on the streets though, but that was from one man who wandered the streets yelling at seemingly nothing. It's not an area I would want to walk at night, but during the day, I felt safe waking to the many restaurants within a one-mile radius. Gym is small and limited to the essentials with a few cardio machines and some weights. They had a Precor elliptical, so I was happy. Overall, I wouldn't mind staying here again, but am not eager to come back.

Yelp
It's the ideal place for coffee and doughnut lovers since not only does it offer comfy rooms and a chic ambiance, but found in the beautiful lobby is their bar where coffee and donuts are served. "Stay for the Coffee and Donuts"

Yelp
It has a very cute vibe and a comfortable stay. I love the High 5ive rooftop bar as well as Ottos restaurant. Good location, friendly staff, valet parking and central location.

Yelp
I went there recommend by the Michelin organizers by visit Oakland for the gala. Food and Bar was never available, housekeeping was inexistent and when I demand it, they drank our coke from the minibar.

Yelp
This is a super charming hotel nestled in the city blocks of Uptown Oakland. We did valet and they have a texting service where you can text to have your car brought up so you're not wasting time waiting outside. We had a suit with a slight view of the Bay Bridge. The room was spacious and the bed was crazy comfortable. The cleaning staff was on it and put extras in our room of the coffee and creamer we like. The breakfast and coffee downstairs at Otto's Cafe were great. We also went to High Five but didn't stay long. They had all the doors open on a freezing cold night. Everyone was sitting inside with their puff jackets on. We will defiantly come back to stay again when we are in the area.

Yelp
Gayle and I stayed here last week at the end of a very long day for both of us. We're former Bay Area residents, and when not staying with friends or family, we usually end up at a convenient Hilton or Marriott property based on where we are and price. This time around, I decided work on my Hyatt points, with a good price at the Kissel Uptown catching my attention. Gayle was a little nervous about staying in Oakland, but I pointed out that Uptown was just fine, and it's just a short walk from the 19th Street BART station. However, I ended up picking her up at Rockridge so she didn't need to make that trek in the dark. Let's get the CONs out of the way first: 1. Our room faced 24th Street and there was a lot of garbage truck and other street noise in the morning. This might have been exacerbated by the fact that we kept our windows open (to the extent possible) for a little fresh air. In any case, soundproofing may be an issue. 2. Parking. Valet Only (unless you want to park on the street) is $45 plus a whopping 25% City of Oakland Parking Tax. Yes it's a rip off, but the folks down at City Hall probably figure that this is paid by folks from out-of-town anyway, so its not coming out a resident's pocket. Now the Pros: 1. This is a very nice, attractive, comfortable, and stylish Hotel and perhaps one of the best we've stayed in at this accommodation level. Things like roominess, bedding, availability and placement of lights, Wi-Fi, shower controls, coffee machine, a robe for Gayle, etc. were all well considered and appreciated. We both were able to relax and had a good night's sleep, at least until the garbage trucks came out. 2. Kissel restaurants. We both enjoyed High 5ive and Otto's, which are subject to separate reviews. There are other places to dine and drink in this neighborhood, but what's right here was much more than good enough. 3. People. Kissel employees at Otto's, High Five, the parking valet, and especially the front desk were all helpful, friendly, and professional. I'm sure Gayle and I will be back as this was a very pleasant experience. We'll deal with the noise and parking questions if and when those issues arise.

Yelp
Loved staying at this hotel. Emin was the bar tender and made my experience such a positive one! The staff was so friendly and inviting! I was always met with a warm greeting upon returning to the hotel and I was asked multiple times about the quality of my stay and if the accommodations were meeting my expectations! The rooms felt very clean and spacious. I've stayed here twice for work and will definitely be back again! Absolutely excellent service!

Yelp
I am so happy Oakland has such a beautiful hotel on Broadway. My company recently had a sales meeting here and I had the pleasure of staying at the hotel as a guest, as well. The decor is charming! The property reminds me of the hotels you'd find in Santa Monica or anything designed by Kelly Wearstler. Lots of marble, tile and mirrors...The staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. The rooms are comfortable and spacious. I was happy to see the guest rooms matched the rest of the hotel. We have all been to a property where the lobby is amazing and the rooms are not and that is not the case here. I had the opportunity to try their coffe from Otto's CAfe - their coffee bar as well as their lunch menu and they did not dissapoint. For lunch I had the poke appetizer and the steak frites - both were flavorful and large. Lastly, the dessert was so delightful! I tried the apple pastry with a scoop of Fenton's vanilla ice cream and I highly recommend. It was confusing at first to figure out where their rooftop bar was. Finally, I had to ask the front desk and they confirmed you have to walk out of the property, around the corner and you'll see a security guard at the door. The bar was also elegantly decorated and had a great indoor out door vibe. The bartenders were a bit slow to get to everyone but this is a new hotel so please be patient. The bar tenders were working hard and the drinks were amazing - I tried the Broadway which was like a margarita but with Mezcal. Over all, this is a lovely property for a business meeting, a lunch or a date night. I look forward to visiting again soon.

i am so disappointed. $75.00 was held on my credit card and i was told $52.00 was for parking all night. i was okay with that. and the rest would be released in 1 to 3 business days. the sign in front of the hotel clearly showed $52.00 for all night parking. well these jackasses charged $13.00 tax added onto the parking fee. if you want to get ripped off, stay there. otherwise i wouldn't recommend this hotel at all. i will never ever stay there again and will tell everyone else not to either!!! i'm very pissed and un happy with the service. it sucked!!!

Yelp
I used to live in Oakland so I am familiar with the area. It's a part of Oakland that is definitely getting better with more restaurants and bars. I now travel to Oakland often and this was my first time staying at Kissel. I stayed here because my first choice, The Waterfront in Oakland was booked. There are not many good options for hotels in Oakland. I was hoping to like this more because it's new and modern. The room was nice, king size room with no view was over $300 a night. Bathroom is modern with good lighting. Bed was comfortable but overall the room is small. The refrigerator in the room is useless. A small bottle of water is all that can fit. Two bottles of water? Nope. The door will not close. I do not understand how you can have this in the room and call it a refrigerator. Biggest complaint I have is the valet. They are a contracted company so the employees who greet the people arriving at the hotel can basically give a crap about you as a customer. They give you a phone number to text to request your car when you're leaving. If it says 15 minutes your car will be ready, expect it take to 30 minutes. One day it said 5 minutes for my car to be ready. Took over 30 minutes before my car arrived. Also, they say they charge $45 for parking. Not true. They charge $45 for parking along with $11.25 daily parking tax. For 4 nights I spent $225 TO PARK A CAR! I liked being able to walk to Drake's, The Crown coffee lab, The Melt and Target but I wouldn't stay here again. I didn't try the food or drinks in the hotel. I did go to the rooftop bar which is trendy, and fairly decent food. I'll happily go back to the Waterfront in Oakland with friendly valet employees, $35 for parking and no hidden dumb fees. Less than $300 a night for a large king room with a view. Kissel/Hyatt you can and should do better than this for what you expect people to pay.

Yelp
Modern hotel in the heart of downtown Oakland. Nice floor plan with all the upgrades. We will be back.

Yelp
Most of the stay was fine. Had an unbelievable experience with the front desk on checkout. The first clerk couldn't get my email right and sent my personal info who knows where. I went back again 30 mins later and reached for a post-it to write my email. The other clerk lashed out about how disrespectful I was being for invading their personal work space. I immediately withdrew my hand and apologized profusely, yet she continued to berate me. Never mind the first clerk emailed my personal info who knows where, I, the customer, was the one apologizing. Then it gets worse. When I got home, I realized I had bed bug bites. I had been miserably itchy and suffering what I thought was hives after the first night, but a nurse friend told me they were bed bug bites. After some creams and a night in a clean bed, where I was not being freshly eaten alive, I was much better. I filed two complaints with hyatt.com. They didn't care to even address the nasty front desk clerk, but they did assign a case number to the bed bugs. That email came in the middle of the night, misspelled my name, and addressed me with good afternoon. Three full days later, I still hadn't heard anything, so I called. I got a voice mail reply, addressing me with good morning, even thought it was 5 PM my time, and 3 PM in CA. Clearly their customer service is not in the US. I then called the front desk of the hotel and was transferred to a manager. She said there are no bed bugs in room 4444. Period. End of story. In other words, I lied.

Yelp
I didn't want to jump straight to a two-star review because there were a few good things going on here: Miguel, the bartender at Otto, the lobby bar and restaurant. He knew what he was doing and had a nice demeanor. Same with Jae, the morning guy in the restaurant... great attitude, kind and efficient. Matter of fact, the employees were, overall, pretty solid. (Though the drinks, though decent, could have been stronger and the food, though not bad, was also nothing you'd write home about.) The downsides were all a little more, well, systemic. I was in town for a wedding and traveling with my brother and sister and friends so there were four rooms involved. My sister had to be at the wedding rehearsal by 5pm on the day we checked in. The other rooms were ready on time but there was a problem with hers. So it goes. But when a guest is paying over $800 per night for a suite with a terrace, have it ready on time. It wasn't ready at 3, which was the check-in time... or four, or five. So she had to go to the rehearsal without unpacking, without cleaning up, without being settled. So it goes. But do something about it, management! The women at the desk were nice enough but no one seemed interested in making the situation right. I think my sister got $100 off (and some Hyatt points... but at this point I don't think Hyatt is where will be heading next time we travel). Full disclosure, they also offered a temp room for a few hours but that doesn't really allow you to get settled and it's not the bitchin' room you paid for.) Anyway, I don't hand out meh reviews for just one negative issue. The valet parking. Again, nice enough guys but a lot of problems. It was not crazy-busy but our car was going to be ready in 30 minutes then 60 minutes then 90 minutes. A twenty dollar bill got us the car quickly and got us to the wedding breakfast on time but so aggravating to be waiting in the lobby at the appointed time only to get a text saying your car will be here in half an hour, making the total time from asking for the car to getting the car an hour and a half. The rest is small stuff. Towels that a guest had deposited in the hallway were not picked up until housekeeping came by the following day, the coffee makers were decent but lacked instructions and sufficient supplies, the rooms were clean but not well-appointed. Here was a pisser... my sister's room. The $800 room with a terrace. OK, you got us, Hyatt... it was technically a "terrace". It was a level and paved area next to a building. But do a google image search of "terrace" and you will see what most people have in mind. What my sis got was a very narrow alley with an 8 foot wall that totally blocked your view. Rooms with NO terrace have better views than the rooms WITH a Terrace. Your options in this transitional-but-slightly-sketchy area of DT Oakland might be minimal. You might even want to try this place. I was just expecting more from a four-star hotel and Hyatt.

Yelp
We loved it. Everything about it exceeded our expectations! I added photos from the signature suite, with the wrap around patio.

Yelp
Great hotel in a weird area! It's surrounded by car lots. We booked it because my daughter had an audition at Berkelee School of Music and they have an offshoot studio hidden in a side street right next to this hotel. It's walking distance and so close it made me laugh! We left way too early to walk there. The reception was lovely and the guy who checked us in fabulous. The room was stocked and super clean. The bed was comfortable. The room smelled good. The only complaint was there was condensation in the overturned water cups because they had been turned over before dried but literally that was the only fault I found. Not bad! Breakfast was good the next day. We would definitely stay here again if we had to come to the area again.

Yelp
I had valet parking which is $45/night/day. The first time I called front desk when I needed the car, I was told rinsing time about 10 minutes. I came down about 9 minutes and I had to wait for another 15 minutes for the car. Another incident was another day. My car was pretty clean but when we got the car, my CD lid was wild open and AC setting was changed, there was popcorn on the seat. Apparently someone used the car. When I approached the front desk and as soon as I tried to tell her what happened, she gave me a card and claimed that they are not responsible. I was told that there was a third party in charge of valet parking. She didn't want to hear what my concern was. Another thing is that the bed cover was so thick and I requested a thinner one but I was told nothing available. I definitely would not come back again.

Yelp
The Kissel is beautiful with great amenities in an awesome location! For the building and amenities, I would give a solid 4 star rating. However, the Kissel falls very short in the area of expertise. I did not find the hospitality to be satisfactory. Bethany at the front desk was awesome and helpful and very friendly when I checked in. Although the notes she made to our reservation regarding our late check out did not seem to go through in the system, there appeared to be a lot of confusion with the staff the following day. When we called in the morning, we were told that 12:30 is the absolute latest check out, even with the late check out fee, which negates what we were previously told. We had planned our day around a 3 pm late checkout we volunteered to pay $60 for, but made it back to hotel at noon sharp to accommodate the sudden change. When we arrived back to the hotel, our cards were deactivated. To ask for clarity on company check out policy, I asked Patrice at the front desk (who was very reluctant to share her name and very short and matter of fact answering my questions by the way) and was unhappy with her responses. Patrice cut me off during my question to share that she felt as though I was provided accurate information, which I was originally, before calling this morning when I was told something entirely different. Looking past unhelpful Patrice and her eye rolls and deep sighs during our conversation, the rest of the staff was fine. They comped my meal after I found insects crawling in my bowl which was kind of them. I am not sure if it was a rough week for the day staff or what, but I had planned on reconciling the downturn in energy following the confusion and staff not being on the same page. I think of the Kissel has everyone on the same page, provides some conflict resolution training to their staff and rinse their berries a little better, it would be a fabulous place to stay. I'll stick to Moxy for now. IMPORTANT NOTE: bartender is Awesome! Very kind and professional. My lunch was great, turkey sandwich gets an A+, I am glad I came back for lunch and balanced out my perspective a little.

Yelp
Pet owners beware! As of 12/27/22 hotels.com listed this hotel allowed for dogs to stay free of charge. When confirming our reservation with the hotel, they notified us the charge would be $100 for our dog for a one night stay. They explained that hotels.com (whom we booked through) was incorrect. The front desk staff escalated to the manager of the property, and she declined to help reduce or waive any dog fee. She said that because their pet policy was listed correctly on their Hyatt website, we would need to take this up with hotels.com. We did. With us on the phone, Hotels.com management called this Hyatt property to release us of our reservation, but the hotel management once again declined to help with this or waive late cancel fees. (We would not have cancelled our room if the pet fee wouldn't have been $100 more than what was agreed upon when booking) Thankfully hotels.com came through for us and rebooked us with another property with an honest pet policy. This Hyatt's management team was no help and not considerate for the guest experience. Stay away if you want a truthful experience.

Yelp
Love, love, love, this place. Location, location, location! Near the restaurants, bars, Bart stations, and in the middle of FUN! So chic, contemporary and gorgeous decor. Love the inside bar area and really love the rooftop bar! The service was great from the young, hip, & trendy staff. The room was beautiful and clean and although smaller then most Hyatt rooms, it was enough. Great views from the room. Comfortable bed and couch and even a steamer for your clothes!we will return.

Yelp
Cute new boutique hotel. I was told you get priority at the rooftop lounge if you're a guest but they don't really enforce that or let you know how to make reservations. Bed is very comfy, refreshments are yummy.

Yelp
A month ago, my girlfriend tried to book an overnight stay at this hotel for the two of us. The web page came with the date preselected (the 13th), so she finished booking, only to discover that she'd been booked exactly one month into the future, and was not allowed to edit the booking or get a refund. That's some serious red flags, already. We decided to take this unplanned later stay anyway, and she called in to see if she'd be able to get a hot tub on the room, and chatted for a while with a nice fellow on the phone who assured her all rooms had one, and that this would work fine. We arrive, get our keys, talk to the concierge to verify we'd get our room, with the tub, and whether there would be any extra charges or not. Everything seems fine, so we go up to the 6th floor, and find there is no tub. We go to the reception again. She apologizes, checks again, and gives us another one on the 4th floor, which definitely has one. But no. Then she concludes that in fact nobe of the king rooms has one, but that we can upgrade to a Suite with one for $700 (it's a normal Monday, so few if any rooms are booked this night), we decline, and she generously offers us a free upgrade to a balcony on the 3rd floor, which we take. This time, we get a balcony, and the room is fine, comfy, and modern enough to have four or even six USB A outlets to charge devices from, all in good working condition. If you can navigate a treacherous booking form, don't have any requests about the room you get, and don't find their pricing off-putting, this is a passable hotel. If you need to trust the front desk staff to know what they are talking about, be truthful and competent, you may want to look for another hotel. Valet service was excellent and speedy.

Yelp
Service was awful. Rude front desk. I stayed at the Moxy down the street last time I was in town and I had a great experience and welcoming service. Don't spend your money or time here.

Yelp
We went to Oakland to visit our son, when checking in the front desk clerk got us our room much earlier than the standard check in time. I took our bag to the room and noticed it was a bit of a walk, so went back and mentioned that. Aaron, the front desk clerk noticed my wife's mobility issues so immediately changed our room to be closer to the elevators, upgraded us for free and extended our check out time. He went a step further and asked if I'd like to add my Hyatt membership number to the booking, of course I said yes. It's service like this that creates loyalty. Thank you, Aaron! We'll be back again and again.

Yelp
Nice Boutiqe hotel- FRIENDLY people- especially Gilbert in the restaurant. Super helpful attentive and polite- a great way to start the new year. The desk clerks were very helpful and friendly- always smiling. The rooms are a bit small, but I loved the shower and bathrooms . So modern and clean! Like new! We stayed in a room with a courtyard and it was very pretty - unfortunately it rained and the cushions were wet. Had some nice touches you don't find in chain hotels- our room had an umbrella, one large size robe, a good size terrace surrounded by plants for privacy .i loved the motion activated lights under the bed- great for late night bathroom trips. The TV was very good quality- and large. The fridge was VERY small couldn't put much in it , but plenty of ice available and convenient. I felt secure here- we came on New Years Eve but it wasn't crowded at all. I love that's it's pet friendly -

Yelp
This place is overpriced and add parking at $65/day, it's over $300 a nite like the cost of a 5-star hotel..this place is a 3-star hotel, so I recommend u stay elsewhere! Through hotel.Com app it was $410 for 2 nites..checking out this morning my total came to $686 so $276 of hidden charges, ridiculous!

Yelp
I stayed at this hotel to work an event happening on site. While the rooms were great, and the atmosphere was nice, I have to say the best part is the employees. The people here were so insanely helpful from the very moment I pulled up in my work van. I was immediately greeted by Robert; a really cool dude who was all about helping me make my job go smoother. He guided me to the loading dock, and actually kept an eye on my van while I got all my gear in and situated. He also gave me a solid tour of the BOH and made sure I set up my equipment in the right room- I write this review because out of the hundreds of hotels I've worked, I was blown away by his willingness to help. Also, I can't forget Justin! I was looking for something to eat later in the evening after I finished my setup, and he actually walked w/ me to the local bar and restaurant down the street- he even bought me a beer! Overall I'm ecstatic about this place and I look forward to the day I get to work here again. Thanks!

Yelp
The valet manager was incredibly rude! My car got broken into in the front, where the cameras are, where the valet stood, and when I approached him to tell him about my car and ask to see security footage he said "it's not my problem." no conversatio, no explanation, nothing. Terrible customer service!

Yelp
hotel is great if you have to go to oakland, gym is decent, rooms are clean but small, food in the restaurant downstairs is good but there are like 10000000 flies at all time in the lobby so kinda gross

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars, I would.. Last week, I checked in at the Kissel Uptown Oakland Hotel for a reservation for two queen beds for four people. When I checked in, they informed me that they had sold out of double queen bedrooms and had placed us in a single queen suite with rolling beds. At first, I expected the room to be better since it was a "suite," but when we came into the room, we realized that there was only one rolling bed that was still folded- meaning we would have to move the very heavy furniture to extend the bed. I went to the reception and let them know there was only one rolling bed and asked if they could bring another one up. The hotel employee said, "Do you think another bed will fit?" I responded, "I don't think so. He then said they had discussed this earlier and were aware this problem would happen. Meaning they gave us a single bed, knowing another one would be needed and would not fit. He said they would send someone to the room to bring another bed. At this time, it was late at night since we had just arrived in the city, and my family and I were exhausted from driving, which we did not want to deal with at 10 PM. When the housekeeper arrived with the other bed, we told her we didn't think the bed would fit and that in order to make it fit, we would have to move one of the tables (black one), which was extremely heavy. We asked her if there was a possibility of getting another room- she told us to call the front desk. When talking to the front desk he did not provide us with a solution, we asked for another room or if there was a way to get a discount since we had asked for a double queen bedroom and they gave us a "suite" that is only big enough for two people. The man on the other end said if we got another room, they would have to charge us about the same price we paid, which was $300- and in the end, he could not do anything for my family and me and had asked his manager already. We had to rearrange the furniture to sleep in extremely uncomfortable beds that felt like we were sleeping on wires. These beds are given to guests when you have five people in a double queen room, and an extra bed is needed. I did not care that this was a suite; I would have purchased a night at a suite if I wanted one. All I wanted was two queen beds. I had reserved this room weeks in advance; therefore, I do not understand how they could not have a room ready for us. I am incredibly disappointed since I wanted my family to experience a nice night in the city. However, we were left extremely uncomfortable, especially when my sister suffered a shoulder injury- we could not sleep in those beds. Overall, I do not recommend this hotel to anyone. I just moved to the city, and I was counting on this hotel for my family to stay when they visit the area, but they will not be staying there again.

Yelp
If you visit Oakland treat yourself to a nights stay @The Kissel Uptown Oakland Hotel. Nothing compares to it in Oakland.
