"During Ramadan, many coffee shops like the fairly new Kitab Cafe and Bookstore are open into the early morning hours at least some nights a week to serve as gathering places for folks who might need a little caffeine with friends. Be sure to check the hours of operation during Ramadan, as each cafe has its own approach." - Serena Maria Daniels

Where to Dine and Drink in Hamtramck

"This lovely cafe and bookshop sits within one of Hamtramck’s hundreds of two flats, now converted into a welcoming spot for La Colombe espresso drinks, Adeni chai, iced beverages on tap, baked goods, sandwiches, and soups sourced from Zingerman’s, as well as a selection of books. 🔥Google Guide Review 🤤: I was in the area after returning an item close by. I was looking for a place to get some work done while being able to get food and Kitab was perfect. I ordered the Caprese on Sourdough and their Spinach Lentil Soup w/ Sourdough bread. Both were greatly flavorful and tasted amazing. There was no empty room on the sandwich where you were left with bread with no toppings. The soup pad tons of spinach, lentils, and veggies with seasoned broth that hit the soul. The atmosphere was great for coworking and fellowship surrounded by Middle Eastern decor and sounds. I will definitely be visiting again 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The coffee here is ACTUALLY really good ☕️ Top notch coffee. Me, a caffeine fiend, was sufficiently caffeinated after enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Also, there were some free Quran’s which I happily grabbed one to enrich myself ☪️ my only complaint….. they use so much plastic, it hurts my little green soul 🥲💚 drinking from glass or ceramic would be so much more enjoyable, especially when dining in. But that’s okay!! They still get 5 stars because good coffee can sometimes be hard to find and the service is great and the atmosphere is great!

Really enjoyed this coffee shop. I’ve been twice. Once for breakfast, Second for late dinner study. Both times were amazing. I love the parking lot nearby that’s free. Smaller & quieter, this space is great for quiet studying or catching up with an old friend. I’m a social worker and was able to get alot of work on my computer done. The food is good too! I’ve tried both breakfast & dinner sandwiches ( I love that they have food options like sandwiches to help those hungry workers like myself) while visiting. Also, their iced matcha latte with oatmilk is phenomenal!! They also have a rewards program to earn points:)

I always visit this place and I like its inviting atmosphere and friendly service. The Cookie Butter Latte is a standout rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced, offering a comforting hug in a cup. The Egg & Avocado Toast was tasty, though I felt the portion size could be more generous. It came as a single slice, and I believe two slices would better match the price point and satisfy the appetite. Overall, a delightful spot for quality coffee and cozy vibes. Looking forward to my next visit.

I went here one time, so keep that in mind when you read the review. I used to work at Avalon, so wanted to see what was done with the space. I like the space, it has been mostly transformed and has a nice clean look. But the bathroom was not clean and there was no way to dry hands (there is a blow dryer but it is not working). The coffee was incredibly expensive. I am used to paying $6 or even $7 for a latte but this was $7.95! In addition to being expensive, it was not good. Way too sweet. I added almond milk at home and at it was still too sweet. Service was fine.

Update: 12/17/24. Stop by again and the coffee was fantastic and the staff was wonderful. Again. Absolutely wonderful atmosphere and very clean. My wife got the honey cinnamon latte hot and I got the brown sugar oat milk iced and they were fantastic. The espresso is so creamy and delicious and the chocolate croissants were phenomenal. I've never had one as good as the one here. They use a very high quality dark chocolate that has a slight berry note in the after finish. Very nice establishment. The inside is beautiful, clean, and inviting. The patrons were friendly, and the staff was very kind and helpful. Prices were very reasonable. Will 100% come back.

The place is cool. But the black chick that makes the sandwiches is terrible. She’s always late and she has an attitude. She comes right in from out side and start making orders. I order a door dash at 6:50 and she did come in to work until a half hour late. If you’re going to serve food make sure all the employees know how to make them.

Yelp
Their ice coffee and Yemeni draft are my favorite drinks.. The thought of naming their sandwiches after main streets is a cool idea and they are all tasty. My favorite is Holbrook They have books to read as you are dinning in to read... It's near work and it's my go too almost everyday morning

Yelp
First time I've ever really been in this area, and when I looked up coffee shops, this one caught my eye. It's an extremely busy and lively spot. There were people doing work and others that filtered in and out constantly. But my drink and sandwich were still prepared fairly quickly. I did an iced caramel macchiato and this coffee was delicious. A bunch of their "on tap" coffee was out so I went with a tried and true classic. There's a brown sugar and 5 spice black and tan on draft that sound very intriguing. I went with the Gallagher sandwich; sounds like a simple deli sandwich but the po boy baguette made it delicious. And there are many others that all sounded really good. This is a worthy spot!

Yelp
Recommended to me by a friend. She said it was really chill and I saw the reviews on Google which 99% were great. Came on a Saturday morning to get a few admin things done. Had an amazing breakfast sandwich on a croissant and the Golden Grandma tea something something. So delicious. Patrons were diverse and chill. Bathroom was pretty clean. Loved the vibe and the bookstore itself. I had to adjust my computer bag before I headed out and said hi to one of the other patrons. He was an older gentleman and he was effusive about how much he loved this place. Said the owners were the nicest people and always ask how he was doing. Two thumbs up!

Yelp
Breaking News: the first time my Spicy Mocha was actually spicy! Kitab Cafe and Bookstore is a cute neighborhood spot that has a quiet, studious environment. I ordered the Spicy Mocha, and was pleasantly surprised that it actually had a kick. Usually when I order this drink at other cafes, it has a few extra spices, but no punch. This drink was great, and left a short lingering spice in my throat, which was really lovely. Milk was steamed great, and the chocolate was not too rich. One thing I noticed (not sure if it's like this everyday) is that orders are one-by-one. Someone orders a drink, it's made while others wait, the drink is put out, and then the barista returns to take another order. Leaves people waiting in line for a while, but if you're not in a rush, then that's alright.

Yelp
This coffee shop is unlike anything Hamtramck has previously had. The shop has a beautiful front facade and the modern yet cozy elements remain continuous in their design aesthetic. Upon entering, you find a small sitting area before the step up to the main area of the coffee shop, so please note it does not seem to be accessibility compatible. I was also super excited to see they offered a few items from La Colombe, which is my favorite coffee chain so I absolutely had to order the oatmilk draft latte. It tasted exactly as it does straight from their shops. I also tried a specialty iced coffee off Kitab's menu- the 5 spice coffee with oatmilk. It was delightfully delicious, has hints of cardamom, clove, cinnamon, and a few other spices I can't quite put my finger on. All in all, beautiful shop, delicious coffee, and amazing service. Staff were incredibly helpful and answered all my questions and made recommendations based off what I said my preferences were. Service was also great. Will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Books and coffee is the perfect combo!! This bookstore and cafe opened just couple days ago. The decor is so beautiful and has the coziest vibes. They have many amazing Islamic/spirtual books for all ages. They have some seating and free wifi which makes it a great place to read, study and work. I was so excited when I found out they serve La Colombe coffee!!! I love their Oatmilk Draft Latte and was so happy to see it on the menu. They didn't have it when I came in and was told they'll have it by next week. I got an Iced Caramel Macchiato which was really good and smooth. I'd recommend if you like sweeter drinks. They also carry a variety of pastries and sandwiches. From the menu it looks like you can ask to sub any meat for halal/zabiha meat.

Yelp
Sooo cute this place, small, and quaint . I always get the oat milk latte hot! Sometime I will order the brown sugar latte. They get fresh bread delivered. We order the Gallagher sandwich and my son gets a lemonade. The lemonades are so fresh with only three ingredients ....lemons sugar cane and water delicious. Must stop by . Good service. Located in Hamtramck on Holbrook.

Yelp
What a cute and cozy atmosphere in the outskirts of Detroit! Who would have thunk that?! I was pleasantly surprised when I saw reviews of this place and had to stop by while I was in town. I was even more surprised at how great the sandwiches were, and how great the baked goods were as well. Thr brownies and scones are delicious! I especially liked the coffee, I had one there and got another to take with me. I pretty much ordered another of each thing I tried just to take home with me. The children books on the shelves were the cutest, as an author, I love to see it. There was a great selection of books for adults as well. I wish them much success and I will definitely stop by when I am in the area again!

Yelp
What a nice new coffee shop in Hamtramck! I loved all the wood interiors. They serve an array of coffee drinks, pastries and sandwiches. There's also shelves with books, mostly Islamic books for adults and kids, but also some non-secular motivational/self help books. They are able to serve decaf espresso drinks, which is great, so I was able to get my usual decaf oat milk mocha. They also have some specialty drinks. "The Hamtramck" apparently includes a little kick to it -- I think the barista said with a little cayenne. I'll probably try that next time. I was happy to see they had a huge spread of pastries mostly flavored scones, cookies and bars. I got the coconut dark chocolate scone and demolished it. The staff were really friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Amazing vibe, coffee, lemonade, must visit. Great staff and service. Hidden gem. Highly recommended.

Yelp
My favorite place to go study at between classes. Their brown sugar oatmilk is so good and if I'm ever hungry I can always order myself one of their sandwiches. The Gallagher and Holbrook are amazing. Staff is always very welcoming and I love browsing the books whenever I get the chance. I love that they have children's books too and entertainment. I definitely recommend checking out this gem

Yelp
Very different pastries. The coffee was good and the staff very friendly. I like the idea of an Islamic bookstore and cafe.

Marian H.

Yelp
Outstanding. I tried the honey cinnamon latte. It was beautifully made and not too sweet. The pastry case has a huge variety. I tried a chocolate almond croissant and it sent me to bliss! I love the big front windows that let in the light on a dreary MI day. I've heard good things about the Adeni tea, so I'll be back to try it with a sandwich. Very happy for a habgout, coffee and sweet shop that's open after 4 in Hamtramck!

Yelp
Second try at this place. It's cute but not much seating. Got the sea salt chocolate chip cookie, they warmed it up and it was delicious. The adeni tea though tasted heavily perfumed. Would not recommend it. Probably wouldn't go back.

Yelp
I really loved this café. But one of your food workers is constantly doing disgusting things while making food. The first time, she had on food gloves and was finger combing her hair into a ponytail and then went back to making food. The second time was her eating deliberately over the surface you make and cut your sandwiches on. Rubbing her nose on the back of her gloves was another rough one.. She's got long brown hair and is always working with the food... I'm so bummed

Yelp
Kitab is the first of its kind in Hamtramck or surrounding cities so I was very excited to try it. The sandwiches are amazing and pretty fairly priced, there's a good selection of books, both Islamic and non Islamic. The ambience is great, even thought it's a tight space-- I think it adds to the charm of cafe. I think the reason this cafe just didn't do it all for me is that it's a bit ironic to me its a Muslim-owned cafe and known to be an Islamic bookstore, even with the Quran on the shelves, yet they serve non-halal meat by default. I unintentionally consumed haram meat from here a few times now due to the lack of transparency on their menu and it's definitely quite a large pill to swallow considering how strictly halal I eat. I happen to know several others that also faced the same issue here. To the owners, please work on changing this asap Or implementing a solution. keep up the rest of the good work!

Jenica A.

Yelp
Great service, and ambiance. Staff wonderful and welcoming. Caramel macchiato was delicious and pastry that was recommended was great as well!

Yelp
It was awesome we had the caniff sandwich with coffee and they were both delicious what a great place to spot I definitely will be going back

Yelp
Excellent selection of coffee, sandwiches, and deserts. Nice customer service. Very chill vibe and nice aesthetic, thoughtful seating arrangement. They even had a section of books highlighting black history month, really enjoyed the inclusivity because they didn't have to do that.
