Straight from Japan, this Japanese ramen eatery offers chewy noodles, golden pork broth, and chashu.
"Kitakata is our go-to when we need a change of pace from the super-rich tonkatsu ramen that dominates LA. Their flavorful shoyu broth is light and balanced enough to drink a full bowl’s worth, but we also appreciate the curly yellow noodles, fatty slices of chashu, and optional green chili oil, which adds lip-numbing heat. Head here for a quick lunch—service is fast, they offer ramen combo sets with gyoza or karaage, and there’s a Yelp waitlist you can join before arriving to cut down on any wait time. "This ramen chain from Japan, which gained a following in Orange Country before it opened in a Torrance shopping plaza, is our go-to when we're craving something different from the typical pork-bomb tonkatsu ramen. "One of Japan’s most popular ramen specialists, Kitakata Ramen Ban Nai, opened its first LA location on March 1 in Torrance. The new strip mall store drew immense lines with customers waiting up to an hour for a taste of the newcomer. Kitakata Ramen Ban Nai’s unique ramen style originated in the Japanese city of Kitakata in Fukushima in 1927 when a 19-year-old Chinese immigrant named Bankinsei opened a ramen shop using shina soba (Chinese-style noodles). The broth, noodles, and chashu distinguish Kitakata from other ramen styles. In addition to the signature Kitakata-style ramen is a green chile and scallion-topped shio version that brings a spicy flair; the sweet-salty miso adds a welcomed dimension. The noodle shop also serves a spicy miso broth and creamy spice-tinted tan tan, plus a vegan miso ramen topped with seasoned tofu. A dipping-style tsukemen rounds out the noodle offerings. As for sides, find stellar fried gyoza, crisp karaage chicken pieces, takoyaki, and a saucy pork bun." - Matthew Kang
"With four locations in Orange County and one in San Diego, Japan’s Kitakata Ramen Ban Nai is finally available in LA, with an opening scheduled for March 1. Every bowl of the signature Kitakata ramen contains wavy and chewy hand-crumpled noodles, clear pork broth, and slices of chashu pork." - Cathy Chaplin
