This New Long Beach Culinary Bookstore Is a Boon for Food Fanatics | Eater LA

"I found a new culinary bookstore and event space in Retro Row at 2116 4th Street that aims to be more than a shop: Kitchen Lingo Books, opened last weekend by Matt Miller, a longtime restaurant employee, owner, and food writer with roots in Chicago and a former Eater contributor. The tiny, roughly 400‑square‑foot shop will carry modern cookbooks and food magazines alongside staple tomes from past decades — including a 1930 copy of The Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook — community cookbooks of handed‑down recipes, food writing by names like M.F.K. Fisher (including some first editions), and a slate of vintage and collectible volumes beyond standard chef collaboration books. Miller plans to host intimate panels and discussions titled A Seat at the Table with media and hospitality professionals, and says he’ll expand hours and offerings in the coming weeks and months while keeping a local focus." - Farley Elliott

Google
Amazing bookshop, so many interesting finds old, new, rare as well as some cookware. I spotted cast iron pans and gorgeous wooden cutting boards. Matt is very knowledgeable and I learned alot from him on my first visit. This bookshop was on my go to list for awhile and I am already anticipating many more visits in the future. Excited about what I may find, learn and grow from. They have classes you can take as well, for all types of culinary interests.

Owner was very knowledgeable and approachable. I grabbed a copy of lucky peach and "unreasonable" for a fair price.

Yelp
Such a cool little spot and glad we decided to take a walk after our breakfast because we would have never known this was here. I am a huge lover of books and collecting books! I try to read 100 books per year so when I saw there was a books tore I had to check it out. The owner greeted us as soon as we walked in. He let us know about the tour that was going to start in 45 minutes and I wish we had time to spare to take the tour, but unfortunately we did not. The store has so many cool books related to anything that happens in the kitchen. They have books on Mexican cooking, vegan dishes, italian feasts, and so much more. Such a great variety of anything you could think of and all at a great price. I scanned the books really quick since we were on a time crunch, but I would love to go back to check it out and take my time browsing. Also, the tours they host sound pretty good so I will definitely be signing up for one of those. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
I wish I could give this sweet shop more than 5 stars. The owner is wonderful, he is remarkably well versed and knowledgeable and is so generous with his time to chat about cookbooks, recipes, and the goings on of the shop and community events. the selection is unique and curated and truly amazing. The shop has fantastic events, and if you are a cookbook lover you will absolutely find something here you love.

Yelp
Kitchen lingo is located on funky retro row, 4th street in long beach. It's a small bookstore that specializes in cookbooks. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable. The stock is small and seems to cater to newbie cookbook enthusiasts. A great place to buy a gift for a foodie friend or relative.

Yelp
It's fun to look at all the cookbooks on display. The owner knows a lot about cookbooks and is happy to share his knowledge. I bought my granddaughter two cookbooks before she returned to college. We spent an enjoyable hour considering which books to buy. I'll return, for sure.

Yelp
I've been in twice now, and the owner, Matt, is incredibly kind and helpful. The first time my partner was buying a gift for me, and Matt helped us land on a classic Italian cookbook. This afternoon, I went in because I was searching for a manual of sorts, something that would help me learn technique and how-to's. After Matt asked a few questions to narrow down what I was looking for, he compiled a list of 7 or 8 books, encouraged me to sit and relax and sift through, and told me a bit about each one so I could make the best decision. Once I narrowed it down to two, I was having a difficult time deciding...the Italian cookbook with beautiful photos and recipes I was dreaming of making at home, or the once-stop-shop cookbook with technique and information galore. I was torn...but ultimately he helped me make the decision by encouraging me to get the Italian cookbook, but gifted me for free a STACK of Cook's Illustrated magazines so I could still glean education, and apply it to my recipes. I was so floored by his kindness! I had such a fantastic experience, and it's always so helpful being led by someone who is a knowledgeable expert in their field. I'm very excited to return for my next cookbook, as well as cooking and technique classes held their in the future!!
