Kizuki Ramen to finally open second Chicago location in Lincoln Park inside NEWCITY - Eater Chicago

"A second Chicago location of Kizuki Ramen & Izakaya should finally open next week inside the NEWCITY center near Lincoln Park at Halsted and Clybourn. The restaurant was announced back in July 2016. The Japanese chain has been serving Chicago since 2016 when it opened a Wicker Park location. The new restaurant’s dining room will seat 55 in a family-friendly space with room for strollers. There’s also a nine-seat noodle bar and a 15-seat patio. The NEWCITY center is a mix of retail that includes Dick’s Sporting Goods, Saks Off Fifth, and ArcLight Cinemas. Kizuki will provide shoppers with an Asian option that includes a bar with craft beer from Forbidden Root in West Town and Saboo Asian Craft Beer in Indianapolis. Kizuki management says the domestic and Japanese beer was carefully picked to complement the food. The new restaurant’s bar is a little bigger than the Wicker Park location’s bar, so they’ll have more draft options at NEWCITY. The Wicker Park menu — with ramen, chicken karaage, and dumplings — will carry over to NEWCITY. The chain doesn’t specialize in a style of ramen, say like Ramen Takeya’s chicken paitan on Fulton Market. Kizuki serves four different broths and five different types of noodles. Ramens include tonkotsu shoyu, yuzu shio, and vegetable. When Kizuki arrived three years ago in Chicago, the city didn’t have as many ramen shops. The landscape has since changed. Over at NEWCITY, signage for Kizuki remained visible over the last two and a half years, but customers couldn’t see progress. Some wondered if Kizuki would ever open. Now in the middle of Chicago’s winter, they’ll have the option of a hot bowl of ramen to keep them warm. The restaurant hasn’t announced an opening date, but look for the first bowls to be served early next week." - Ashok Selvam

My friend and I was in the mood for ramen one day so on the hunt we went and came upon Kizuki Ramen. First off the staff is super kind, and greeted us upon entering. However the rate of service and the food that was not up to par of the expectation. The restaurant was not that busy when we stopped in for a bite. We ordered the gyoza which was amazing. However, that sort of where the visit had to wrap since the ramen order was taking longer than expected we had to then place the order to go since we were on a timeline. When I had the ramen I ordered later on in the day, it was not the taste and flavor I was expecting (granted, I could have taken my friends order, they looked very similar in the containers as they were not labeled). The broth in my container was hardly existent, which I thought was odd since its a ramen dish. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I will try them out again, I know there was a sign out front saying, "now open" so they could be just be trying to find their rhythm.

The Ramen is the star of the show here, however them allowance for alterations based on dietary restrictions elevates them into modernity. Many of the dishes, even with visuals, are the definition of repetitive, but like most cliche "burger joints" would you be here if it didnt? The fact that they offer Kale noodles instead of more traditional as well as low-sodium option shows their interest in longevity. For the non-chopstick users, every table comes with a drawer of with forks when needed. Be nice and tip the servers, they have to say cliche Japanese lines and sometimes the chef due to, they earned it.

I chose this place for lunch due to its proximity to my friend's house. I opted for the Garlic Tonkatsu Shoyu Ramen, which was enjoyable, although a tad saltier than I prefer. The service provided was exceptional.

Service was a little slow but by no means bad. The ramen was delicious and the wait time again not bad. Not often in the area but it’s some of Chicago’s better ramen.

I am glad that it was only $5 a bowl for their soft opening because I wouldn't want to pay full price for it. It was overall disappointing. Somehow, the other locations were better. The egg was cooked perfectly but it had no taste. The soup was bland, I got the low sodium but there should be other flavors than just being salty. The meat was okay but it didn't melt in your mouth like it should be. Karage was better than the ramen, flavorful and crunchy outside soft inside.

Very delicious ramen! I got the spicy chicken tan tan, so good. Yummy sake options. Thanks Mark for the great service!

Google
Ramen spot in Chicago for anime fans. Grab some noods and watch your favorite show. Food is alright, still not better than Goma Tei which imo is the best American version of true Japanese ramen. Still a good experience to try.
