Spectacular wines, warm and inviting service, with stunning views of rolling hills, gardens and even hummingbirds, Knudsen Vineyards took the win for best wines on our recent stay in Dundee. Of the 5 wines in the flight, I loved four, purchased 3, and I'm considering becoming a member. The wines were that good.
We came a few days before Memorial Day to beat the crowds, which sounds unusual after 14 months of semi isolation due to Covid, but since wineries require appointments, we wanted to visit the top five on our list. Thanks to my fellow Yelpers who pointed me to Knudsen; let me pay it forward by recommending Knudsen to others, without hesitation.
Damian greeted us warmly upon arrival and had our flights already set up in main light filled room by the window overlooking the patio and gorgeous rolling hills. It was a day of repeatEd stretches of sunshine then downpours, so rather than take a chance, he recommended that we sit indoors. The view was so beautiful it was an easy compromise.
Let the tasting begin! Not only was each wine described by its origins and tasting notes, we learned a lot about the history of Knudsen, the first commercial wine producer in Dundee Hills, back when they were Knudsen-Erath. Their picturesque vineyards are the image of the Oregon Wine Lovers license plate! Wow! There is even a canvas of this image hanging on the wall. Plus Knudsen license plate frames for the taking. While I'm not giving up my Portland Trailblazer's plate, the wine country design would be my 2nd option.
The first wine we tasted was a Chardonnay, something I rarely drink or like, but immediately fell in love with theirs and knew I would buy a bottle. The 2018 Double Gold, with flavors of lemon, apricot, honey and vanilla was silky and smooth.
Typically Pinot Noir is too light for my preference but their 2019 Backstor blew me away. Deep and rich, it was my favorite. Recently bottled, it was only available to purchase there. The 2018 Double Gold was also bold with hints of chocolate ganache and spice. Bought a bottle of this, too!
We finished the tasting with the 2017 Reserve, another winner, tastes of raspberry and plum. In all, I loved 4 of the 5! Bottles are on the pricier side so becoming a member is definitely worth it.
As we were finishing, the outside patio and side room were filled, although socially distanced appropriately. Now that the warmer weather is here, they have music on the outdoor patio some late afternoons. The patio is positioned up high with the best views of the vineyards and makes a lovely setting. I'll definitely be back to enjoy music, fine wine and a phenomenal view!
This was my first time here and it easily became one of my favorite wineries in the area. The wine itself is stellar. Then add the warm, friendly and informative service plus gorgeous views of rolling hills of grape vines, it's the perfect place to relax, unwind, and feel like your a million miles away!
