Ko Ryo Jung Restaurant is located on the west side of Victory Center, a busy plaza filled with restaurants & other businesses. Parking may seem plentiful, spaces are hard to come by during lunch & dinner rush, especially dinner. It doesn't help that curbside parking is limited to 30-mins. (I think?), but the regular spaces are equally hard to spot. It doesn't help the matter when there's a 24/7 tow warning for unauthorized or illegally parked cars. My g/f says don't worry since parking is so difficult, everyone does it (takes the curbside longer than the limit). Ummm... I don't want to pay for the tow or the hassle of waiting to retrieve my car.
I haven't been to Korean BBQ in awhile, so this is a treat (aka food coma calling... LOL). My kids are too young & not used to this kind of eating to take advantage of AYCE, & my husband will just eat a normal serving so I'm unable take advantage of an AYCE menu. Also, you will come out smelling BBQ-ey due to the smokiness from grilling your own meats. A very belated dinner that initially reserved for a French restaurant that didn't have availability on a Friday night (surprise, surprise... told my g/f to make reservations), we ended up here -- a go-to for AYCE.
The wait was quick, only 10-mins. before we're led to a cozy corner booth. After picking our initial set of meats, we set off to the AYCE banchan buffet filled with over a dozen sides: bacon & butter (not as a side, it's for greasing the grill & added flavor/seasoning... doesn't everything taste better with bacon?), salads, fruits (watermelon was particularly sweet & juicy, but ran out on round 2; only oranges were left, & they were also sweet & juicy), pickled radishes & cucumbers, veggies, mushrooms, greens, potato salad, rice noodles, various sauces for dipping or as a dressing. While I like the self-service so I'm not making obscene, repeated requests for more banchan, I'm a little worried about the cleanliness of the station as I watched some diners dropping/mixing ingredients, particularly the bacon which is raw.
The meats came promptly, & looked fresh. The brisket cooked the quickest. The dipping sauce, usually consist of a pepper-salt mix in sesame oil, seemed mute. I've had some dippers with a bit of citrus or smoked salt. Between the bacon, butter, & mixed meats, the pan was eventually seasoned that I didn't need to dip the meats. The spicy pork bulgogi took the longest to cook; I'd probably skip that next time. Instead of filling up with bibim bap (carbs), I would like to try their tofu soup & spicy ramen (yeah, I know it's carbs, but wondered if that works to offset some of the heaviness from the protein). I'm surprised they don't have a cold noodle offering; I would prefer this contrast to all that BBQ vs. rice or bibim bap. We were quick with round 1 & ordered 1 more round with a grill change (it was quite charred so I didn't need that seasoning... LOL), stuffing ourselves; I think we ate 3 plates/person.
Service was friendly & mostly great, though nowhere to be found when I needed a water refill. Servers were bustling & may mow you over near the kitchen entrance/exit, which was on our path to the banchan station. It felt like playing dodgeball. Yikes!
The basic AYCE menu currently runs at $30.99 with 21 protein & side items, still a good deal since it offers lots of protein choices. The upgraded menu offer 25% more proteins & sides for a 30% mark-up. For the price difference, there wasn't anything that I absolutely must have so I'm ok with the standard options. Can you believe you can get all this freshness for $21.99 before COVID-19 lockdown? Now that was a bargain menu.
Definitely will be back with friends, not my family, as they're not a glutton like me. Hahaha...
Recommended: beef brisket & bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi (takes awhile to cook), pork jowl & belly, bibim bap, rice noodles, watermelon, banchans.
