We were celebrating our 6th "sushi-versary" (or 6th anniversary of having our first sushi date on Oct 1st) at Koko's last night, per the suggestion of my husband's boss.
I usually think of myself as a sushi snob, or perhaps a food snob in general, and want to first point out this place is getting four stars for these reasons:
1. For Sushi in Wisconsin, it is really quite good. (If it were in Chicago, it would probably get 3 stars?) Way better than any sushi we've found in MKE for sure.
2. The atmosphere is awesome and adorable. I could literally watch the fiber optic tree for hours. (Ok, maybe an hour?)
3. The service was thoughtful and prompt, as well as knowledgeable.
4. The rolls themselves attempted creativity, which made it all the more fun.
We started with miso soup, which tasted like it came from a package. Don't waste your time on this as it was pretty pointless.
Then we moved on to the appetizer "hand grenades" - 2 huge shrimp "stuffed" (and covered) with rice, topped with a peppery sauce, then baked. These were really quite big and delicious - one of the main highlights of dinner for me. We both smiled and snickered at each other, pleased with our first taste of (albeit cooked) seafood here.
My 2nd favorite thing we got was the 2112 roll. I felt like this roll (like every roll we got, but even more so) was WAY too heavy on the rice, and too light on the fish! More fish next time you guys!
But the sweet and spicy chili sauce on the roll made it absolutely delicious to eat!
Probably, that sauce on anything would be fantastic, but you get my drift! I would definitely order this again.
As it's Wisconsin (I guess?) so many of the rolls were tempura rolls, or had tempura elements, or cream cheese. I asked for them to bring the spicy salmon roll without cream cheese, but it was brought *with* cream cheese.
Normally that would have irked me, but I was enjoying everything as it was, and the salmon was tempura'd already - so who cared right? It was a fun little roll with good flavor. They at least added my serranos to this, which made it even better! Lots of flavor going on here
The Cheng Bang roll was interesting, but not the most exciting, even tho I liked the name of it ;)
The Godzilla roll didn't disappoint with it's very-sweet "EJ" sauce and loads of shredded kani-kama. Also, the seaweed part if the roll itself was fried in tempura, which gave it a bit of a crunch - and my husband really loved that for some reason ;)
Also of note - the ahi tuna and the salmon sashimi were both fresh and delightful. Good, fresh taste :)
The wine list looked fantastic, but we just stuck with green tea.
I would definitely return if I had an itch for sushi, but may try sitting at the bar to beg the chef's to use less rice.
Then again, that would mean my back was to the fiber optic tree!! ^o^
PS: To the restau: please get some green tea ice cream, preferably fried, you guys!
And thanks for serving up a good time and good food!
