Popular African Eatery Komchop Opens A Second Location on Westheimer - Eater Houston

"Komchop Restaurant, a local destination for African cuisine, has recently opened a second location near George Bush Park. The new outpost opened earlier this month in a strip mall at 14144 Westheimer Road, serving “delicious meals in a simple but classy environment,” according to the eatery’s Facebook page. The new outpost joins the original Komchop on Bellfort Boulevard and comes about five months after the first location opened its doors in February. Since then, the restaurant has racked up dozens of solid reviews on platforms like Yelp and Google. An extensive menu of delicacies can be found in the new outpost of the self-described “finest African restaurant in Houston,” including dishes like yams & egg sauce, jollof rice served with proteins like goat or steamed fish, and several soup options including okro, egusi, pepper, and fish banga varieties. Moi-moi, bole and fish, and spaghetti jollof round out the offerings." - Alaena Hostetter

Google
I only eat peppered goat soup if I’m under the weather to help clear out congestion and when I tell you this soup knocks it out!!!!! I felt better that day and have been thriving ever since!!!! Whew! A good peppered goat soup is hard to find and I just tried this place on a whim and I’m so happy I did! Great taste, friendly staff and nice establishment! Will order again in the future!

I recently visited Komchop with a few friends, and we all had a fantastic experience from start to finish. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the server provided top-notch service. The food? Absolutely delicious — every dish was flavorful and clearly made with care. I highly recommend Komchop to anyone looking for a great meal and warm atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Been looking for a place to try fufu. I ordered the yam pottage with stew meat and it was tasty but the meat needed to be more tender. My friend tried the okro soup with chicken and felt the okra needed to be cooked longer. The young hostess was so friendly and helpful. I really wanted to try the ginger drink but they ran out.

Google
The egusi was flavorful, but I was disappointed with the overall experience. The restaurant placed a whole smoked turkey leg in my soup, which left very little actual soup in the bowl. For the price, I expected more substance and better quality. The turkey leg itself had very little meat, which made the dish feel even more lacking. Additionally, the staff were not welcoming, which added to the negative experience. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this location.

This place is one of a kind, very clean, peaceful, and really stands out. The food is top notch; regardless what food you get, you will feel like you’re in the heart of Lagos. The location makes you feel at home eating there, and the view is very nice. The customer service is outstanding, the staffed are well trained and care about the customers. If you get the opportunity to meet the owner, she’s a very pleasant human being and respects every customer.

So this is my second time ordering from this place the first time it was OK, today I just feel like eating African food so I stop by because they were open. I was so hungry. I wanted to buy everything I saw, so I got rice and fried fish and then I decided to get okra/fufu. Normally, I don’t leave reviews, (honest true) because I don’t care about reviews honestly most times people fabricate reviews, but when I leave review is because I feel scammed so I’m upset. Dan at this point they deserve a review from me honestly. So I asked the young lady that assist me, is the okra well cooked? “she told me yes it’s, I mean look at it, it’s well cooked,” so I trusted her words and decided to order it. Mistake When I got home. I was like oh wow, they serve me lots of soup/okra. The okra feels a lot, well that was not the case. I was wrong, when I got home and finally open up the bowl very well I was a bit disappointed, I was tricked. That’s when I realized it’s Halloween already. what they did was put the fish under and then put little bit of okra on top of the fish so it can look like it’s a lot, that’s criminal act. But that’s not what actually made me to finally decide to leave a review for them. The fact that she lied just so I can buy. “She told me the okra was well cooked and no it wasn’t raw.” Maybe that’s how Nigerians cooked their okra, but I don’t eat half cooked food, that’s why I was hoping she was going to be honest so I can make my decision not to buy, but I kind of blame myself for believing her that it is well cooked and the fufu I don’t understand I am chewing stuff in it like baby rocks in it.

Google
The goat meat was not tender and I was only given one piece of goat meat with other assorted meats which I did not order. I only wanted goat meat and the Eguisi Soup was mediocre watery no flavor the fufu was cold and the Jollof rice was very dry with no flavor and it tasted old. Very disappointed I spent $30 and couldn’t eat the food! The two young ladies that took My order was very nice and gave great customer service!

Google
Currently with foood poisoning as I write this from this restaurant. I had to go order. This is not efo. It’s like old spinach they tried to reheat and add a BUNCH of oil and random spices to the already old spinach they microwaved. I’ve had efo from many places and this by far was the worst. The “fish” was so thin and barely edible and mostly bones and of course saturated in oil as well. The customer service was subpar and rude with very haughty lady who gets frustrated w/ simple questions. I’m so sad I ate this spoiled food now my stomach hurts so bad. Another prior review said they found a bug. Just avoid this place. There’s plenty of better restaurants that will serve you fresh food and you will smile after not run to the bathroom.

Yelp
I heard so much good reviews about this establishment, however, it was a no for me. I had the fish plate and my date had the pepper soup. The customer service was outstanding, which was a plus, for that I give the establishment three stars. I didn't care for the fish it was fried too hard for my liking. However,I was able to try a different protein. I chose chicken, the chicken was pretty good and I wasn't charged for the chicken . Now the jollof rice was pretty good. The ambiance was nice and clean. I love the yellow flowers! I might consider giving this establishment another try in the future.

Yelp
Arrived on Saturday and they did not have much food 1/2 of what we asked for they did not have. Also the menu price was different than the actual price the actual price was higher the bill was $250, $9 per piece of extra chicken. This place is not cheap. The young lady tasking the order is and was very nice: when we added the chicken to the order it took it over $300. Now with all that, yes the food was expensive but it was good. Jealloff rice, coconut rice, stew beef, pepper soup, chicken, yam all very good and the service was also very good. I would visit again.

Yelp
Decided to try this place do to my husband wanting west African food. The restaurant was clean and family friendly. The woman who took our order was helpful and had a friendly presence. I ordered the jollof rice with chicken and fried plantains. My husband ordered the Goat Pepper Soup. The chicken was really good and in my opinion gave the Jollof rice the flavor. The rice by itself I feel would be a bit bland. The goat pepper soup had a good flavor but was very oily and gave us heart burn.

Toyin K.

Yelp
I am absolutely shocked. I usually order from this place a lot. Today I ordered the Jollof Spaghetti with Turkey. While eating it, I realized that the spaghetti was pretty harder than usual. I chewed slowly then felt a prick, to my surprise it was glass .. YES GLASS in my food. This could have totally taken my life. The carelessness of this place is insane. I'll never eat from here again.

Yelp
When they said they were going to circumcize me, I didn't exactly say "Kom chop!", and so I got away with foreskin intact. I wonder if I also have my fiveskin intact now that I think about it. So this is a pretty delicious African restaurant serving what is a very large and ever-growing population of West Africans in the Houston area. Everything I've had here is delicious, and it's not the cheapest (you'll pay over 10 for a meal, for sure), but it's far from expensive and we're looking forward to exploring the menu more than just the Pepper Soup that we've had so far. Definitely a big fan, and although service isn't the best in the world, the food can be pretty magical and it's well worth coming and giving it a try.

Yelp
This review is strictly on the food. I've passed this place several times and wanted to try it. Several weeks ago I was feeling sick and heard that the goat pepper stew helps open up your sinuses and good for when you're sick so I called to place an order. I was told they no longer do orders over the phone so to go on the website. Understandable! No problem so I go online to order the stew which is about $19. I go to pickup my order which was ready when I arrived. I got home to open my food which looked quite unappealing. Honestly it looked like intestines with just a few pieces of goat meat. No flavor at all just VERY SPICY! Which I don't mind the heat but overall it was not good. I'm basing my rating off this one dish I ate. I would go back to try something else though.

Yelp
This is my first time having food from Komchop. I have been thinking of going in for awhile but never did. I decided to order food from here but restaurants like this you have to be very careful or go in person because they tend to not read the instructions or just plain ignore them. I have been feeling under the weather so I was craving some spicy pepper soup because it is very healthy when you are sick. Very delicious. I did like the taste of the pepper soup as well the amount of meat pieces to soup. It can stand to be a little more spicy but my taste buds are a little off. One thing I did not appreciate is I asked for a single piece of dry chicken specifically without stew on it. I know that most people eat it with stew, I do not. Again, I do not. That's why I asked for it dry. I'm not eating it with rice. If they wanted to ignore my request at least put the stew on the side so I can trash it and enjoy my chicken as I please. Now I paid $8.99 for soggy chicken. I don't know if it's worth returning here to order pepper soup again. I might, I might not.

Yelp
The egusi soup tasted old like they refrigerated it for days! The meat was soo chewy and tough , they gave me three pieces one of those pieces was all hard skin . I was better of cooking it myself because this tasted horrible no flavor , no spice, I wouldnt even get it to my dog. Do better as a chef myself I can't believe yall are out here serving your people old food with hard old meat. Never ever again do not order from here plz this place is not good

Kiarra R.

Yelp
The food was good & the environment was welcoming. The woman at the register was very helpful.

Yelp
I got a plate of jollof rice with chicken and a side of spinach. Everything tasted good, but I just wish the jollof rice was spicier.

Lily D.

Yelp
Great Ambiance, Great Food, and Great Customer Service! As I walked in the way to order was immediately communicated and i got my food out to me in no more than 10-15 minutes, you will definitely see me here again.

Yelp
It was all good just a year ago...Not sure what happened. I came to Houston to escape crappy Dallas, and couldn't wait to come to my favorite Nigerian spot in Texas. I was salivating at the thought of my tomatoey jollof, crispy chicken and tender plaintain (dodo). And thus, I placed my order ($14) while anticipating greatness. ...And what happened? Well, despite me asking for 2 pieces of [crispy] chicken and an extra side of stew...They decided to hand me chicken doused in a big tub of stew. ??? I informed the server that i did not ask for my chicken to be soggy. I also did not ask for a tub of stew. I then show him yelp pics of how i received my food from just a year ago. He gave me the kanye shoulders and told me that all the chicken comes submerged in stew now. These mongrels also charge an additional $4 for this tub of stew. So I basically paid $10 extra for an extra big piece of soggy chicken swimming in a pool of unneeded stew. $24 Total. ??? Please make this make sense. You fry your chicken beautifully then throw in a pot of stew, assuming that your customers all want chicken soup essentially? Where is the logic here? Food was also served in plastic containers and plastic utensils. I ended up taking the food back to my hotel suite and throwing the chicken in the oven to re-gain it's crisp. I was also then able to properly cut the chicken with a metal knife. The food was still good, but someone should tell this geniuses that food texture is just as important as the flavor. I probably won't revisit this place as I have no idea what else they will change if I were to come back some time later. Smh.

Yelp
A friend of mine Ordered a plate of jollof rice, plantain and assorted meat and shared it with me because the portion was a pretty big size. Honestly it wasn't the best Nigerian food I've ever tasted but it wasn't bad either. I felt like the jollof rice needed more flavor. I believe I got beef in my assorted meat and it was a little dry/tough but it was manageable. You can't really mess up plantains so that was fine to me.

Yelp
West African establishment which has expanded slightly after coming my second time within 2 weeks. It's located in a shopping strip area with limited parking close by but there is overflow parking near. My First visit was during the week on Thursday and it wasn't crowded . However, visiting today on a Sunday. There more people. The dinner area is nice with glass tables and with well put together menus to include comfortable chairs. You can order to-go or dine-in. The payment option is cash or card only. I'm unsure able Apple Pay. I normally order the Tilapia with Spinach and it's amazing. Fish has bones but it's worth every savory taste. Unfortunately today no spinach but still amazing tastes. Additionally, they play contemporary music and have TVs for viewing sports and news. It gives a lounge setting or vibe. Very inviting and comforting. The staff is always amazing and beautiful. I added the beautiful part lol. But really the female staff member are good looking. It's a great experience and I would recommend anytime.

Yelp
The place is renovated looks nice i like it, the food taste good and fresh. Waitresses are AMAZING!!

Yelp
DONT GO HERE WORST AFRICAN RESTAURANT EVER. Number one. They take to long to get ur food out. Number two. If you order beef only they will mess it up and always mix ur meat in the dish . Like if I order beef only they would add Fish, fish bones, and a cow tongue. Number three. When u get the food the meat smells like poop or like someone had dig in there butt and put it in the soup. And sometimes the meat is not cook at all. This poop meat will linger on ur fingers for hours . It's hard to remove the smell off your fingers. This is the worst I ever had never again. I have never experienced this from any African restaurant. All of the soups is bad I order 3 different ones. I'm upset

Yelp
Probably the best looking Naija spot, ambiance and asthetic wise...very very fancy Food was beyond delicious..the vegetable soup reminded me of my Aunty's soup in the village tbh...meats were properly seasoned and cooked. Very clear that the ppl here know what propa Naija cooking is...will be here again!!

Yelp
Well, I guess I made the mistake of ordering my spaghetti jollof with "assorted" meat. So I guess someone went out into the neighborhood and scrounged up whatever they could find because this was inedible. Thank God the fish was good so at least I got to eat. Have no idea what species the fish was but at this point I guess who cares. Could use a little more attention to the packaging for delivery.

Yelp
I have been there a couple of times and I am never disappointed. Great food, courteous customer service and food is always fresh. Thank you

Yelp
This was our first time trying African food and they did not disappoint. The food was full of flavor and spice. Prices was reasonable. Service was great. We will be back.

Latisha M.

Yelp
Jollof rice was good but fish was very dry and overcooked . Like they cooked it the day before, reheated it and then added sauce

Rocco S.

Yelp
It doesn't look the greatest on the outside but the inside is finished very nicely. I'm no African food expert but from what I can tell it was pretty good and felt authentic. The meat was good and they definitely have a few unique items on there that are worth a try

Kehinde A.

Yelp
Komchop occupies an important place in the food market as the preferred destination for satisfying customers that crave delicious African means. The restaurant offers a unique experience for customers to try new meals from different African and American cultures. One thing that will encourage you to keep enjoying meals at Komchop is the sparkling clean environment. The ambient air allows the diffusion of the sweet aroma of the different delicacies that are served at the restaurant. The staff ensured that the floors tables and chairs are sparkling clean and ready to receive the next customer. A meticulous arrangement of the dining tables is at another level

Yelp
I order Egusi with chicken via Postmates, if only it was packed correctly I received a huge piece of chicken no stew and few scoops of egusi. The Eba was perfect but what was I going to eat it with. My husband and daughter had the coconut rice with chicken they enjoyed their meal. Although it wasn't as flavorful as in the past.

Roselyn O.

Yelp
This just reminded me why I stopped eating at this restaurant! The quality of the food at Komchop is beyond disappointing. The food is not tasty AT ALL. I asked for goat meat and received meat fat on a bone! On top of that their food tasted old and spoiled. Yuck!
google avatar

Sandra O.

Yelp
I would highly recommend this authentic Nigerian restaurant. I've dined in and ordered take out several times and the food is always delicious! They get an A+ for consistency! Best Banga soup in H-Town. Shout outs to the Delta State owner/chef. Their services is also good especially since that is a main struggle for many African/Caribbean restaurants. Friendly and informative! They pick up the phone and provide excellent customer services.
google avatar

Roses R R.

Yelp
I tried this restaurant in hopes of great food and service. I received neither. The waitstaff Hakeem was rude AF and seemed bothered by my presence. Everyone else was very accommodating, when the bill came Hakeem decided to add an extra 6.00 to my tab more than what was priced on the menu, when I asked him about it in his own words, he said, Well that's what it is"! No way seriously! Needless to say I called my bank and had the money credited to me. What a shame and a disgrace. Hakeem ruined my experience and this restaurant was way out of the way extremely far.

Chioma O.

Yelp
Ordered from here March 2022- tried the rice and stew and had ordered plantain and Moimoi. They were out of moimoi And gave me extra plantain. The stew was lacking in taste and the white rice was burnt. They later called me like 5 hours after I had already picked up my order to tell me there were out of moimoi and ask if I wanted plantain.

Dj S.

Yelp
the best african restaurants in the greater houston area!!!! will always come her to eat with no doubt!

Sarah S.

Yelp
Great Experience, Great Food! The staff was very friendly, the food came out quickly. I will definitely be back. I ordered the banga soup, I practically licked the bowl clean. Love love love!

Yelp
This place is so good. I've eaten hear several times-mostly to go because of the pandemic-and i pretty much never have a complaint. The 2 times i dined in I ate the spaghetti jollof and stewed chicken both times it was pretty good. Since the pandemic I've been ordering the Egusi Soup pounded yam and Stewed Fish-literally so good. I really don't have anything negative to say, they're friendly, the food is always ready when I take it to go, and it always tastes fresh. Might I also add-the ambiance is nice. Decorated well.

Felicia S.

Yelp
Man this place is sooooo good! Enjoyed my lunch today. I had the jollof rice with fried tilapia fried plantains and spinach. This place is a must try. I give it 10 stars

Yelp
My first foray into Nigerian cuisine. Definitely not disappointed with this dining establishment. From the moment I stepped in the door I had high expectations. The place is clean and nicely decorated and the host and wait staff was very friendly. The menu had many selections of which I'll go back and try again. Most of the dishes appeared on the spicy side which is right up my alley. If you don't like the food here, you probably don't like Nigerian food! They've only been here seven weeks and have already established a reasonable take-out business with the locals.

Eve A.

Yelp
My sister and I heard good things about the place..so we thought we give it a try. After tasting my food a surely regretted it! I ordered the fried rice 1.) It had no color(It was basically an off white) 2.) It had absolutely no taste!!!! I was so disappointed. After a few bites, I couldn't do it anymore I lost my appetite. Also, the meat was too tough. I wont be going back again unless they get a new cook. My sister didn't have a pleasant experience with her food either and they charged her for extra stew she clearly expressed she did not want. Our time, money and appetite was wasted. PLEASE BEWARE!!!

Carolyn J.

Yelp
According to the pictures online the food doesn't represent it at pick up. I ordered a soup because of the picture got there and it WAS NOT IT called and told them to please post true pictures.

Lynette S.

Yelp
I love this place. I got the talipia fish with okra soup. The flavor is amazing. I've ate here plenty of times and I must say, the food is good every time I order from them.
