My husband and I live nearby and really wanted to like this place. We came in for dinner on February 2, 2023 around 5pm.
We started off with two sodas and chips and salsa.
Sodas are sold by the can which I know is more common in Mexico but carbonation and free refills are pretty standard in restaurants here but no big deal just a little odd.
Then we got the complementary chips and salsa which was honestly really great.. some of the best salsa I've had in a while and I love trying different salsas. The salsa here was well blended, smooth with the perfect amount of heat and amazing flavor. Things were off to a great start so we were really excited to get our food.
Then came the entrees. My husband got the birria tacos which he said were ok but they were not crispy at all even though they specifically asked if he wanted them crispy when he ordered.
I ordered two veggie tacos on corn tortillas. I got two tacos with a very strange assortment of vegetables- broccoli, cauliflower, snap peas and mushrooms. There was no cheese, no rice and beans and no pico; literally just a plate with two corn tortillas and some undercooked, crunchy veggies and pale mushrooms that hadn't been grilled long enough. I was bummed but tried something else. I ordered the veggie enchiladas hoping it wasn't the same weird vegetables and that maybe the cheese would help. What I got was exactly what I feared and the cheese didn't help. I think they actually used the same veggies from the tacos I sent back because the broccoli was the same shade of yellow.
I didn't send the second plate back, but I didn't ask for a to go box either and our waitress didn't seem to care why I left without eating anything but chips and salsa. Management/owners might want to encourage the wait staff to ask about food that isn't eaten. I left my plate on the table exactly as the picture looks and the waitress made no attempt to make us happy.
I decided to pay for the enchiladas because I know this is a small business and I hope they succeed, but with Don Dario's and Serranos just down the street, they need to improve their food as soon as possible. We ended up leaving and I got veggie enchiladas from Serranos which contained vegetables that made a lot more sense; mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, and onion all grilled and not crunchy.
I really hope this place improves. It's so close to our house and we'd love to not have to cross 35 for good food. We will come back in a few months and try again, if they're still around.
