I was in Dallas visiting a friend and she planned a fun night out at Komodo! Apparently this place is hard to get reservations at and a very popular place!
Things were already a little rocky given that we had a reservation for seven people at 7pm, and they texted us 36 hours ahead of time to first cancel the reservation and then confirm a new reservation for 8pm. Annoying to say the least.
My friend and I were the first to arrive and decided to have some drinks at the bar. I ordered the Pretty Fly for a Cacti, which is supposed to have prickly pear and sriracha, except I tasted no sriracha and the slightest bit of prickly pear. My friend got the Fortunes told, which was supposed to have lychee, which neither of us tasted. So, fairly disappointing. When two more people in our party arrived and tried to order from the woman working the bar, she acted like we were annoying her.
They had us wait until the entire party had arrived so they could start the 1h45 clock on our reservation. Interestingly, they never actually followed through with that and we had our table for well over 2 hours.
We started with random appetizers, and I will say that coming here with a large group feels daunting, just because their dishes are meant to be shared, so trying to align on things can be tough. Anyways, what we tried:
*Lobster Dynamite - pretty good
*Shishito peppers - good
*Edamame - I liked the sauce on this
*Wagyu steak tacos - one of the girls ordered this as a main, and it's the tiniest two tacos I've ever seen!
*Texas Quail - this was pretty good
*Money Bag - I liked these, and the touch of gold is cute, but I'll just say it, this is pretentiously overpriced
*Dan Dan Chicken dumpling- this was everyone's favorite
*Hamachi Serrano - this was so spectacular that we ordered two more of these!
*Rainbow Roll - an ok roll, but would absolutely skip as it's badly overpriced
*Seabass - two of the girls split this as a main, and they said it was very bland
*Crab Lo Mein - this was tasty, but again, for $56, I can get better garlic noodles and the amount of crab doesn't justify the price
For dessert, we tried three things:
*Banana Pagoda - this was amazing and unlike anything I've had! Delicious!
*Chocolate Lava cake - chalky and less than great
*Yuzu raspberry dumplings - couldn't taste the yuzu and overall just too sweet.
So basically, the food was a 3.5 - 4 out of 5, but the prices are just outrageous, so I'd knock a full point off just for that. I mean, $105 for peking duck? $30 for dim sum or for a roll? Please.
Now, the service. It wasn't great to say the least. First, our waitress managed to spill hot water on our table and one person in our party. It also took us 25 minutes to get her attention and ask if we can order food because people were actually hungry, to which she said she'd be right back, and it was several more minutes before we actually placed our order. Lastly, even when we did get her attention, it was still impossible to get her attention as an individual and I wasn't actually able to get another drink. My friend asked for a drink and that never showed up. In fact, with the exception of the bottle of champagne that one person in our party ordered, she didn't bring any more drinks out despite a couple of people ordering some.
I'm not sure if they were understaffed or what, but again, if I'm paying this kind of money, the service should match the price tag.
The last bit that just sealed the deal for me was that after we paid, we walked back towards the entrance, where people were now queued up for the elevator to go up to the lounge. We were waiting on our jackets and trying to figure out where we were going next and logistics before heading outside where it was cold, and the doorman told us we needed to take it outside.
All of it just felt like no one at this place could be bothered with any kind of service or care, which feels frustrating with these kinds of prices.
