Yelp
My review actual is more like a 3.5. I really wanted to love this place, but it's more of a like. They have good customer service, the food is good, but lost stars for me are prices/presentation/quantity. And to be clear I base this all on two thing when it comes to Hawaiian food since it's usually the two things I order in every Hawaiian restaurant I go to here on the mainland or on the islands, the loco moco and spam musubi. To me, not only do I love to make and eat those, but for any establishment that serves these, that's my litmus test to see if they are any good.
So I know a good/quality loco moco and how it should be made, the way Canadians knows a good/quality poutine.
First off their spam musubi, excellent. Definitely made fresh because the rice is still warm, the nori crisp, and price for one musubi on par. And they make it like I do, with the whole nori wrap. I hate those stingy looking musubi with just a strip of nori wrap around, use the whole sheet dammit!
Now where I have issue, hence the lost stars, is their loco moco. Here are the pros:
1. Love the "Build your own" Loco Moco idea
2. Good gravy taste and viscosity
3. Was full after the meal (but that is attributed to an abundance of rice).
Now the cons:
1. Only one burger patty
2. Only one egg
3. Meat/egg to rice ratio is waaaay off (there's a lot of rice)
4. Price for all that rice: white-$9.29 or fried-$13.29 =seriously pricey for rice
5. Price for your meat choice-$4.00=for ONE patty (in my case burger patty and that's the cheapest of the meats)
Now what I can tell you, and please keep in mind this is MY personal experience, but every loco moco I've ever ordered or made for myself (and I've eaten a lot in my time) has two patties, two eggs and a butt ton of gravy. And while the Kona Kitchen loco moco had some good flava, I just couldn't get over one patty, one egg and all that rice for $17.00 (I ordered the fried rice and burger patty options). Just as an example, here are some excerpts from a few other places I've had loco moco's and their menu description:
Bobby's Hawaiian menu:
Loco Moco Hamburger Patty Plate
From $17.25
TWO hamburger patties, TWO eggs, and brown gravy on a bed of rice.
Hawaiian Sun BBQ menu:
Loco Moco
Mini $6.50 Regular $8.50
Hamburger PATTIES with/TWO eggs and topped w/ homemade gravy
L&L Drive Inn menu:
Loco Moco
Mini $4.25 Regular $6.25
Savory hamburger PATTIES over rice, topped with brown gravy and TWO fresh fried eggs.
Goodness! even the mini's have two pattys and two eggs!
(Is it me or the more "celebrity" status a place has the more they need to charge premium prices for not so premium things. In the Case of Bobby's Hawaiian I think that moron Douche Fieri said something was "Off the hook" or something. Then of course Kona Kitchen is owned and operated by Yuji Okumoto (Chozen Toguchi on Karate Kid 2 and Netflix series)...but I digress.
Oh and the one last bit, every other place ALWAYS has Hawaiian Mac salad on the side for all the plate lunches. I don't think I've ever ordered a loco moco (or any Hawaiian dish) and not have the mac on the side.
So short one patty, short one egg and if you want mac that's an extra side for $3.29 when it's a given side every place else? It's like bread sticks at an Italian restaurant or chips and salsa at Mexican. It is a given!
Maybe if the patty was bigger? That could've been forgiven, but it wasn't. Maybe if it was a patty made from ribeye or Wagyu? Can't justify only one egg, now come on! Especially with as much rice as they give, that's just cheap but you can order an additional egg for $2.59? Goodness, you could by a whole dozen for that much.
But like I said, they have good customer service, the food tastes good, but unfortunately I take my loco moco's seriously dammit! And I have certain expectations that can't be ignored for it to be considered a proper loco moco.
I understand that everyplace has to up the costs to make a profit, but to do that and serve less? That's just bush league.
