13 Essential Korean Restaurants in the Twin Cities

"Just across the street from the University of Minnesota’s Gateway Plaza, Korea Restaurant does bustling business at lunch, filled with faculty, staff, and students alike. With its expansive and clearly labeled menu, Korea is a great option for diners with dietary restrictions, offering a range of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, and servers willing to chat with the kitchen about modifications. Order the kimchi pancakes to start, and you can’t go wrong." - Julie Zhou

14 Underrated Restaurants to Explore in the Twin Cities

"Nearly lost in the menagerie of PR-backed restaurants that populate Dinkytown, Korea Restaurant keeps quietly chugging along with a glorious assortment of bibimbap, bulgogi, and potstickers. Lunch is mayhem, but worth every second of wait time. Prepare for self-service and generous helpings, and don’t be shy to refill on the side dishes." - Justine Jones, Jon Cheng

First time eating Korean food. It’s about 2 1/2 hours from us in Windom, will be making the trip again!! It was amazing!! The Kimchi (I had never had it before) and oh my goodness 🤤 it’s all I can think about!! 10/10 would highly recommend! And the Service was Top Notch!! Our server was so kind, so informative, so personable and so friendly! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Google
I had an amazing first experience! The service was super quick and everyone was really friendly. I loved the buzzer system they have for requesting more items or refills—it made things so easy! The food arrived promptly, and it was served hot and delicious. Everything was flavorful and simply fantastic!

Google
A lovely little place! It feels like a tiny mom-and-pop eatery with simple decor and limited seating. Intimate but not crowded. I ordered chicken bulgogi and boiled dumplings. Both were tasty! The chicken came sizzling and steaming on a hot stoneware plate. The sauce was a lovely soy base that made for excellent combinations with the rice and pickled vegetables on the side. The dumplings were soft and great for dipping. I also had great and fast service, recommending a good dish for my low heat tolerance. I will definitely come again!

Google
Probably one of my favorite Korean restaurants in the Twin Cities, if not my favorite, because of how much their food is consistently authentically on point. One can always easily find something on their menu that they can also find in Korea at a random location, and this establishment also gets the flavor right, along with the small plates that complement the meal. Whether it's the stone pot bibim-bap or just the bibim-bap, mixing rice with the given meat and vegetables, along with some gochujang, made it authentically delicious. The seafood pancake was more plain than the kimchi pancake, which was to be expected. It had the perfect amount of seafood to not make either the seafood or the pancakes overwhelming in terms of amount. The kimchi pancakes had the right kind of saltiness that was given by the kimchi. Once again, authentically delicious. The galbi tasted amazing, and I think I could taste a certain amount of butter based on the type of oiliness and saltiness that the meat had. I could remove the meat easily from the bones, and the meat was easy to chew as well. I think the black bean noodle was the only item that I was more critical about, because it was a bit watery and the sauce was plain. However, it wasn't bad at all and I still finished all of it. Just comparatively, it was less tasty, and I have had better in Korea or China. Around this area of Oak Street, if people want to look for good Korean food, there are a few very good options, and this establishment is definitely one of them. I would highly recommend it.

Google
Nothing beats a good spicy tofu soup and some sizzling pork bulgogi in cold days like this 🤤 Their bibambap is also delicious and you can ask for vegetarian option. We love the quick service, banchan refills, and friendly staff. Only wish is that they carry more items on menu.

Google
This is the Korean restaurant I had been looking for! Legit food, good sized servings, and they even made us a custom dish (we asked them to add squid to the spicy pork stir fry), and they did it! Will definitely be back. I want to be a regular.

Google
Great small Korean restaurant in Minneapolis. Parking not the greatest very small parking lot that's free if you're lucky and inside is a little plain and small. Food is amazing though, a little pricey, but free refills on the 4 little side dishes (not rice though) - they do cut you off though after 4 lol Has a cool button system at the table to call them over for refills and service and when you're ready to pay. Recommend a try if you're on the area.

Google
First things first. Loved the fact that they gave side dishes. I got the spicy chicken soup no 22 (if my memory serves me correctly). The food was very homey. Reminding a lot of the food I ate when I stayed in Korea. I 100% recommend if you want to eat "grandma/pa's Korean food". Also their prices are relatively affordable compared to other K restaurants i have been to in the US. The next time I go, I definitely want to visit the karaoke room to sing my heart out.

Yelp
I ordered a galbi tang to-go and loved it! Galbi tang is really worth it to me because it comes with beef short rib and clear noodles in a soup. It also comes with rice and banchan. The soup is very hearty and it will warm you up! I would recommend!

Yelp
Korean food in Minneapolis? I mean, excellent Korean food in Minneapolis? Yes!!! This place was awesome. Quick and friendly service by all the wait staff and a free lesson on the correct pronunciation of a few Korean words for entrées. (Now I know how to properly pronounce Bulgogi!) My Bulgogi was so tasty and a huge portion that I didn't think I could finish by myself; but I did. It was so freakin' delicious I couldn't stop eating. Plus, no room for leftovers at the hotel, so bottoms up! Appetizer was good and the prices were decent. Recommend this place for a great Korean dinner and experience.

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant for about 15 years. It has never disappointed me once. The environment is cozy and family friendly. It is small and kind of old, so it's not the best for hosting a party or treat a new friend. But if you want some authentic Korean food by yourself, with your family or close friends, this is THE PLACE! All the dishes in my pictures are amazing! They offer unlimited side dishes and which are also great! Anything on the menu is super good! The service is very nice! They seem like from the same family!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow!!! Delicious authentic Korean food! Great service and homey atmosphere. Loved the pork bulgogi and spicy tofu soup!!! Yummy!! Shout out to the new owner and their manager for excellent food and service!

Yelp
We are really not having any luck finding an open spot by the university of Minnesota at all. We are finding out this was a bad weekend and week to come here. Closed for the 4th of July weekend. :(
google avatar

Yasiri N.

Yelp
Super quick service, I took a party of 15 there and we all got our food within 15 mins of ordering. The food was all fantastic! First time trying Korean food and I will definitely be returning for more! Parking is small but you can likely score a spot or you go between lunch and dinner times. The restaurant itself is pretty small but service is quick so if you have to wait it'll probably be a 20 min wait? The vibe is authentic.

Yelp
The food was good, service was fast, and price was average. I've eaten here a few times and there's only one thing I would change is their closing time. For a restaurant, 8:00 PM closing is way too early, especially on the weekends.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little restaurant. We ordered the kimchi stew, japchae and grilled mackerel and of course Qalbi. Qalbi is my favorite! Very well seasoned and simply delicious. The japchae was tasty as well but I was missing the beef in it. That's how I always had it in the past but it was still pretty good without the egg and meat. The kimchi stew was so spicy yet I couldn't stop eating it. Very interesting flavor with the fermented cabbage. The dishes were served with a cup of rice for each of us and little dishes of kimchi and sprouts. Grilled mackerel had some bones in it so I was worried about my son eating it. But it was still tasty. And our bill totalled to be around $100.

Yelp
Food was bomb, customer service was fire. Good mood and energy. Very peaceful, and the leftovers tasted great when reheated.

Yelp
I have been to this place when it was all the fashion decoration. They renovated the place kept it simple which makes it easy to clean there is parking in front of it for eight cars or so. Service was quick and the rice was crunchy at the bottom of my meal which made it really good. The sauce was not too spicy. And then greens were fresh and tasty. I've been here a few times in the past and I never regretted coming here. I'll come back again. I am relatively new to Korean food but it's definitely good here: so forgive me if I don't use names of dishes.

Amy Shin S.

Yelp
Hidden gem of a Korean restaurant in Minneapolis! Their food is authentic and very flavorful. If you're new to Korean food, you can't go wrong trying the galbi or spicy pork. We love the bibimbap and spice seafood noodle, too. Highly recommend to anyone.

Mike D.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from Uber eats FYI- everything is priced up A LOT on Uber eats. Highly recommend ordering directly from the restaurant, I just had an Uber coupon. Beef bulgogi (medium spice): 8/10, solid meal. Lots of meat, some pieces were chewy but since there was so much it didn't affect the portion. I ordered an extra side of rice with it, highly recommend since it is quite saucy. Only $2 extra for a nice tub of rice. Spicy rice cake (medium spice): 9/10, absolutely delicious. Was noticeably spicier than the beef, even though they are both "medium." Would be even better with mozzarella cheese on top to cut the heat, I am a big fan of tteokbokki so I am biased. Glass noodle stir-fry (no seafood, no shrimp, no meat, no mussel): 10/10. Delicious. May be a little salty to others, but I didn't mind personally. Comes with a side of pickled radish and kimchi, I just wish they gave us more kimchi! It was delicious.

Yelp

Yelp
Food was so ono .. just like Korean bbq back home in Hawai'i excellent service... I will come back again, next time we're in town

Yelp
My husband and I both had the bulgogi. It was very good, he said it's the best he ever remembers having. I would certainly go here again

Yelp
It appears that the restaurant was recently remodeled as my experience did not look like the older pictures posted. The dining area is small and looks like it can only sit maybe 6 parties of no more than 4 people. There were paper menus and table service, unlike older pictures that showed ordering off of a menu board and then sitting down with a number. The small space was not cramped but we sat by very noisy diners. The service was fine- not terrible but not great, but the food is the star here! My friend and I ordered the beef bibimbap bowl, spicy rice cakes, seafood pancake and pork bulgogi. I tried everything but the pork and everything was better than I expected! The spicy rice cakes were so chewy and perfectly flavorful, they're the best I've had so far in the cities! I could sit down and eat 2 plates of these haha! I took the majority of the seafood pancake home and was able to eat it cold for the leftovers the next day ( I didn't want to reheat seafood) and it was still good! This is a pretty quick service-sit down, eat and then leave type of joint. I am definitely coming back for the rice cakes and to try a few more things off the menu when I'm craving some comfort Korean food.

Yelp
As a Korean native traveling from out of state expecting some authentic Korean, it disappointed me so much that I have to leave a review here. First of all, all the workers were Korean but the food was no where closed to real Korean and as usual prices were jacked up high, please don't waste time & money, you're welcome saving your guys night out.

Yelp
Really, really, really yummy Korean cuisine at ridiculously cheap prices in a pretty authentic setting! We tried Korea Restaurant on a whim, and while it's a bit hard to find, tucked away from a busy street near the U of M, the food is totally worth queing up for! I felt like I was back in K-Town in LA, right down to the menu printed on the wall, take-a-number order system, and Korean-style water dispenser. They have a very wide range of authentic Korean dishes, and while the tok bok ki was a little more cooked (read: soft) than I like it, all of the flavors were absolutely amazing. We particularly liked the spicy pork and the soup, both reminded us of Korea. The bon chon were also super yummy and filling. Even with ordering two dishes each (so we could have leftovers for the next day), our total bill came to less than $30, and we left full and happy. Be aware, they only make a limited amount of Kim Bop every day, so get there early if that's what you want! There is a limited amount of parking in the lot, but you might also get blocked in if you park there. They have a clean bathroom. Service is super fast and friendly!

William K.

Yelp
Cool restaurant with delicious food, and reasonably priced as well. Service is quick and friendly and the overall ambiance is quite peaceful. Parking can be a bit limited, that seems to be the only issue with this place. But I'll be back!

Wendy G.

Yelp
Went there yesterday. Bibimbap and seafood pancake is fire. Service is very good. They got pretty busy during dinner. It might be hard to find parking.
google avatar

Chaeyoon S.

Yelp
I'm Korean so I understood things more but they were rude to my party of two. Like I went here as a customer in a restaurant, not as your grandchildren. I js didn't feel like a customer at all. By they, I mean one person in particular - other workers were nice. Foodwise, I'm p sure they bought processed black bean noodle sauce and made the dish. It taste exactly like the instant ones I have at home. Taste not bad but - i Dont think it's worth that much.

Yelp
The food & service was great! Did take out... wish the menu was available here! Had the Seafood pancake, glass noodles, short ribs & beef stir fry! Yum!

Yelp
I absolutely love eating here, the staff is super sweet and kind and the food comes out relatively fast. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Korean comfort food on the UMN campus.

Yelp
Unauthentic and expensive. I liked the restaurant back before the management/owner changed
google avatar

Yelp
Korea is a great place when you want mom and pop Korean food! Kinda hidden. The outside is very unassuming but the food is good! You have pops working the cash register while the aunties work the kitchen. They even have the iconic Korean metal rice bowls and water cups. The beef bulgogi is delicious. Hint of sweetness and savory. Their beef soups also hit the spot especially on a cold day. Their chicken plates are also tasty if you're not in the mood for beef. The number 1 sushi roll is a must get! My gf and I get it all the time. It's especially good if it is freshly made. The warm rice, pickled veggies, and sesame oil is so so good.

Yelp
We just tried this restaurant again after maybe half a year or so , since our last visit, happy to update different level of service and even better cleanliness . The food also improved much better. I would say we will be back as we visited every week before new ownership. One thing , as critic , what we are striving for reviewing a restaurant is the restaurant consciously keep improving or maintain high degree of Quality , Taste , Service and Cleanliness. Certainly Korea Restaurant is back in business !. And I am happy to highly recommend this place again . Enjoy one of the best Korean Place in Twin City.

Cat P.

Yelp
Some of the best Korean food I have had in the Twin Cities. Also, their portions are huge, and the seafood pancake is the perfect amount of crispness. Would go back all the time if I could!

Teo S.

Yelp
Legit korean food. Very sweet people. Had the galbi, japchae, and the kimchi jeon. Absolutely will come again.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! As soon as you walk through the doors, it's as though you've transported to somewhere far away - there's just no place like it in the Twin Cities. It's very small and somewhat chaotic (especially during the lunch hour). The ordering counter is right in front of the kitchen, which is open enough to see the heads and hands of the cooks. To the right of the counter is a wall where you can hear dishes clanking as they're being washed. There were waves of people that would walk up to the counter, form a line, put in their order and pick up their food. Chaotic and orderly. They have a great lunch menu with $8 meals. I got the DakGaeJang (Spicy Chicken Soup) and an order of the KimBop (often mistaken for Japanese sushi, but tastes very different). The soup was just delicious! There were bold flavors with a subtle spice that I couldn't get enough of. I've never had anything I didn't like here. The portions are generous and the flavors are on point!
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
Cute and very clean. Food came out fast and was delicious. Will definitely be coming back again when I'm craving for some korean food again
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Been a few years since I've been here and I can definitely taste the difference. I ordered the following for take out: seafood pancake, seafood tofu soup, 2 kimbap and a beef bulgogi. The soup had barely any broth it was more tofu and egg, not that much seafood too. Worst of all was the seafood pancake and I'm only saying this because the plastic sauce container was placed inside the same container as the pancake so by the time I got home the container melted and the sauce went all over the bottom layer of the pancakes making the bottom super salty and I had to end up eating the top without any sauce. If you haven't tried the pancake it taste very bland without the dipping sauce. I didn't try the kimbap or the beef bulgogi since those are for my kids. I wanted to call them to let them know but the guy that took my order didn't speak English so I didn't bother.Sad to say but I probably won't get takeout from here again.
google avatar

Khat P.

Yelp
This place is run like a cafeteria. There's no table service. So clean up after yourself and bring the tray to a cart where the guy will take it and wash it himself. There is a water dispenser there. So you do not need to buy a water bottle, unless you want pop. Now the menu here is on the wall across from where you order. They have pictures and describes what is in it. They have a good variety to choose from. I had gotten the cod soup and my wife got the seafood. And we did also get the seafood pancake with veggies. The prices are reasonably priced for the portions you get. When your order is ready, you will hear a ding(bell sound) and a number above the register indicates what order is ready for you to pick up that is on your receipt. Now to the flavor. The seafood soup was lighter then some places, but I think if we had gotten it spicey. It probably will be richer in taste, but still good. The cod was really flavorful. It had a good kick to it and thick filets. The seafood pancake came allot bigger than we expected. It had a good crunch and the right amount of meat and veggies. Just keep in mind that it do get a little warm in there and humid, due to all that soup that's cooking in the kitchen. They also have their own private lot, but a little tight. Beats paying tho right:) oh and if you want a to go container for your soup. It is 50 cents. They used to give the styrofoam ones, but the health inspector shut that down. Its only 50 cents and those plastic containers can be a bit pricey , so I don't mind paying 50 cents lol. The styrofoam boxes for non liquid foods are free tho.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my go to Korean food place in the Twin Cities! The food is delicious every time and reasonably priced. The place is small with limited parking but definitely cozy!

Yelp
Restaurants under a hair salon are often a risk, they can go either way as far as experiences go. I had been eyeing "Korea" for a couple of years now but until recently had no occasion to pay it a visit. It is a hole in the wall type, self service establishment with an open kitchen and open washing area. The menu is all numbers against photos of familiar dishes on a wall. The terms no-frills and popular, can't be emphasized enough for this place. Packed from corner to corner with patrons standing in between tables, waiting for a takeaway order or to occupy the next empty chair, this establishment possess the lovely atmosphere of a bustling business in Asia. Surprisingly, the whole place despite the overwhelming clientele is very clean and efficient. They do specially priced lunch specials and even their mains are pretty reasonable. I had the Chicken Boko which is essentially spiced, stir fried chicken with vegetables. It took only a couple of minutes from order to table. It was pretty good if a tad oilier than other places. The usual sides and hot white rice were all super fresh. I guess "Korea" comes closest in restaurants in this part of town to the vibe of cheap but great restaurants that color the culinary scene in most of South East Asia. A little less oil and chicken a bit more sour and this place could be a 5/5.
google avatar

Allen H.

Yelp
Fundamentally sound Korean food. I ordered two staples - topokki and bibimbap - and it was ready to go within ten minutes. Oh yeah: any time a Korean restaurant gives you banchan with a to-go order, it's definitely a plus. The topokki was fine, but not exceptional. I would have preferred if there were a little more of the spicy sauce and also a little more chew to the rice cakes. The bibimbap was generously portioned in terms of the rice and vegetables. However, I wish there had been more bulgogi. I'm not usually a fan of bulgogi, but it was actually pleasant here. I'll be back when I crave staple Korean dishes.
google avatar

Vee M.

Yelp
When I was a student, I loved the food here! The restaurant was a hole in the wall, nothing fancy, old tables and chairs, a self serve water cooler, old school AC and fans sitting around and is just poorly set up, and you bus your own plates, but their food was awesome and I kept coming back esp since they had a bike rack and parking lot. Fast foward to 2021! Wow, they must have a new cook cause the food was not up to par as it use to be. The jap chae had overcooked noodles, and a nasty after taste as if it was cooked in overused burnt oil... and we ordered beef as our protein, and when we got home (take out during pandemic times), there was no meat to be found!! Annoyed. Some items on their menu was "sold out" and the other items we did order was not very good either. Sigh... not sure if I'll be returning :( This was just a convenient spot for students without transportation, but if you have a car, i would recommend going somewhere else.

Kaia H.

Yelp
Food was delicious!! Small restaurant, limited parking. Definitely a hidden gem as the food and sides were fresh and good!!

Yelp
Amazing food! Service was great. They provide authentic Korean dishes. They made us feel welcome. If you are looking to try something new check this place out!

Yelp
Great food! Great Value and Great portion as well! A couple of years ago I first came to Korea Restaurant with my cousin who was a UMN student, we tried the pancake and that was delicious. Now as a soon to be UMN student I came by myself to try something new. Surprisingly, there is less food on the menu (the pancake is gone), but I ordered Haemul Dolsot (seafood pot rice) and it was AMAZING! The rice was just a little bit salty, but the deliciousness persuaded me to eat the whole thing! Also, I realized that some of the dishes are less expensive than before, like dolsot bibimbap was $10.99 a couple of years ago, but now it's $9.99. Not sure of other dishes though. FYI: if you order an earthenware pot, don't serve right away because......it's HOT! (suggested by me who almost burned my tongue) Also, if you like the crunchy bottom of the rice, wait for it to heat up a little bit and you got the full yumminess!

Zak A.

Yelp
Food was not worth the price, there are better Korean restaurants in the twin Cities. Owner seemed nice but the staff are rude and argumentative.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Changed new owner and food taste somewhat different than the grandma and they increase the price too. I think the mainly was the taste. I'm Just used to the grandma and grandpa type of feel so now just rush and blend
google avatar

Yelp
It's yummy as usually! Love the friendly staff and delicious food. Parking is super convenient.

Tian Q.

Yelp
Food: -Decent considering the general rarity of Korean cuisine around the twin cities, everything tasted okay but it was nothing special -Standard complimentary banchan (side dishes) with kimchi, bean sprouts, fish cakes, marinated potatoes, marinated lettuce -Kind of pricey. $7 for jajangmyeon (black bean noodles)? No thanks when I can get a pack of delicious instant jajangmyeon noodles from the asian supermarket for $2 Setting: -Small and hole-in-the-wall-ish complete with fruit flies and all -Very sad AC/ventilation system; it was hotter inside the restaurant, when it was ~90F outdoors Service: -Self service -No one knows any English except for one of the Korean lady cooks who appeared to speak the bare minimum, and also the closing-time cleanup lady who asked if she could have my tray -The two Korean cooks started yelling at each other with passion while we were still dining. I wish I watched enough Korean dramas to understand what kind of vicious names they were calling each other
google avatar

Yelp
I wish I could give them one star. We were excited to go here today. Until we saw 3 staff in the parking lot yelling at someone parking their car. Then we walked inside and saw how dirty the place was. We should have know that if they treat people in public so poorly that the inside would be just as bad. I can't imagine any business operating and being successful like this dump. I wish I could give them one star. We were excited to go here today. Yelp
Wow. Talk about an overload of choices. The door to the restaurant has black tape over it so you think it's not even open. A friend and I went there last weekend because tofu house was closed. This place was poppin!!! Seats and tables were full to the max but we grabbed a spot right after ordering. I got the veggie bibimbap. I also ordered the potstickers and my friend for a bulgogi. Our food came about 10-15 minutes later and was steaming hot. Each dish also came with your standard Korean small bowls of kimchi, potatoes etc to eat with the dish. It was a lot of food that we both had to take leftovers home. The dishes themselves were very flavorful and had spicy additions you could incorporate. I definitely recommend this place if you're in the Korean food mood. They also have forks for the chopstick impaired.
google avatar

Cindy D.

Yelp
This place is located on campus at the University of Minnesota. It gets crowed during school time a lot. It's small. Self serve. You go up to the register and order what you want and you get a reciept with a ticket number. When the food is ready, it'll ring your number on the board. I usually order Korean bbq beef, I am a BIG fan of korean side dishes. I think their side dishes are ok, not the greatest. I don't mind going there again if Dong Yang closes early. Great location for students.
google avatar

Brianna J.

Yelp
This was my first time coming here and it didn't disappoint. We ordered pork bulgogi(7), spicy rice cake(3) and soup(21). Super fast service and everyone was so nice and helpful. I will come back soon for more!

Yelp
Korea Restaurant is a true hidden gem. They are a small family owned restaurant, with a very small section for seating. You go up to order your food, and when it's done they call you. Once you finish up your meal you bring your tray back and you're good to go. Korea Restaurant is very authentic, and that can be scary to some, but try to get out of your comfort zone. The food is very reasonably priced, they give you very generous portion sizes and they give you side dishes for your meal. Like I said above Korea Restaurant is very small, and it's always packed. I have always been able to find a place to sit, but sometimes you can be uncomfortably close to the people next to you. I highly encourage you give Korea Restaurant a try. It may take you a little bit out of your comfort zone, but you will not regret deciding to come here. 4/5 -Trenton V
