Yelp
A beautiful & chic sushi restaurant that offers decent food but charges high prices and is definitely not for the beachgoer to stumble into after a day spent at the sand nearby!
When our original plan to go to Crab House fell apart because they were closed for the season, we wanted to find a sushi place for a quick meal to fill our hungry stomach after a day on the beach @ South Pointe. Google search didn't let us know that it was a more pricey, fancy place, but we went with it anyway due to tight schedule. The place, which is rather beautiful and well-appointed, was totally empty because it was very early for dinner so thankfully we sat in our post-beach attire.
Our waitress was a bit ... ineffective in her communication so it took a bit of time, but we were able to utilize their beautifully-designed Japanese style bathroom to do a bit of further drying up post-beach and food came out without too much delay.
1. Squid tempura (APP, 4/5, $18) - A delicious start of meal to nourish our hunger! Real squid with good bite & gentle tempura skin dipped in nice horseradish remoulade.
2. Seabass skewers (APP, 1/5, $18) - Terrible, terrible... injustice to seabass! It started out full of flavor but changed quickly to overwhelming saltiness. While fish was moist, I think the chef had cold or something because the amount of miso glaze was way too much! We barely finished one piece each and ended up asking the server to take it off the bill to which she, after some hesitation, agreed.
3. Salmon Truffle (Main, 3/5, $22) - I expected better since this seemed to be a popular maki. At this price point, I would've expected actual truffle oil at least but alas, it was barely a faint whiff of fake stuff. Salmon quantity and quality was decent, but that's about it.
4. Unagi Temaki (Main, 4/5, $10-15?) - This isn't on the menu because I asked for it separately. Temaki is japanese for handroll, and it's usually how I order at sushi places since that allows more fish-to-rice ratio than traditional makis and we wanted some calories. Unagi was not over-seasoned, flaky and buttery to taste. This non-menu item ended up being the best dish!
5. Salmon w/ Ikura Temaki (Main, 3/5, $10-15?) - Not bad - they gave generous portion of ikura (salmon roe) which provided that fishy flavor explosion on the first bite, though salmon quantity was slightly lacking.
In the end, what we wanted to be a quick filler-dinner before a busy evening in town ended up costing $100+ ... which I wouldn't do again. But even if for a nice dinner out, I'd think twice before coming again since the sushi is a bit lacking to be honest for the price they're charging and the service was a bit lacking (she showed obvious disappointment when we didn't order drinks... I mean it was 4:30pm, hello!). Don't get me wrong - it isn't BAD... I can see how most people would have a great dining experience in their beautiful space w/ decent sushi.... romantic dinners included... but I'd think there are many better options just 10-15 min away from this beach-front area.
