10 New Black-Owned Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"You come to Koto Hibachi for one reason: to eat heaping portions of fried rice topped with perfectly cooked proteins like shrimp, chicken, and lobster. And while the buttery-fried rice is the main event here, this casual, counter-service spot in Bridgeport also has a selection of maki (like a shrimp tempura roll) that’s also quite tasty. There are a few tables if you want to eat in for a quick meal, but this place is mainly a to-go operation." - adrian kane, john ringor

15 Black-Owned Chicago Restaurants Serving Up Serious Comfort Food | Eater

"Koto Hibachi is a Bridgeport staple for big portions of excellent hibachi and sushi. The counter-service spot doesn’t have too many tables, so order for pick-up if you’re pressed for time. As for what to order, pick your protein of choice for a hibachi special, from filet mignon to scallop, which will come loaded with rice and veggies. Be sure to get some extra homemade sauce, ideal for drizzling over your leftovers." - Ariel Kanter

We rented out the space for a private graduation party. It was perfect. The food was cooked great and spread out for us catering style to self-serve. Prices were reasonable for our group and included various protein options (steak, chicken, and shrimp). The spicy sauce was especially spicy, which I like. Would def visit again.

This was my first time at this location saw this guy on Facebook doing a review there and I seen the food and it looked great taste good and all will recommend to all. And went back today 6/7/25 was o good but wasn’t given no type of spoons or forks or napkins or chop sticks , today spent $126 .

Google

If you haven’t catered from Koto, you should. I had the daunting task of deciding what food to have for our company potluck. I went to Koto for lunch & thought, here’s an idea! I pitched it to the committee & they said yes. When I got there the staff was patient, courteous & helpful. They encouraged me to complete my catering order online & I did just that. I received a confirmation quickly with a set time for pickup. I got there at 11a, my food was ready to go. They individually wrapped & labeled each sauce squeeze bottle (6) & loaded my order in my car. I put the food in woks at work & they loved it! We discussed our favorite sauce combinations (mine being; ginger & spicy teriyaki) so good! Staff raved & thanked me for the selection of chicken, veggies, noodles & fried rice. The smell of the food permeated in the hall. The following day staff repeated how much they enjoyed the food. Thank you for making our event memorable.

Rice looked good but the taste was ugh, disgusting but steak was good but very little , the rice was in a large portion but just tasted like soy sauce with too much buttter and oil which I could even feel in my throat lol,nah am good.

Google
Great take out hibachi. The food while good they got my take home order wrong. And when I called they put me on hold and left me there. Just ended me going back there.

Been meaning to try this place. For some reason I thought it was a dine in restaurant. You can order your food and eat it there, but definitely a to go establishment. I had the combo hibachi, which comes with fried rice, veggies, chicken, shrimp, and steak. The portions are good. My steak was very tough to eat and it had a taste to it I wasn't fond of. It taste like ginger or teriyaki. It's extra for noodles and any sauces you want. You would think your meal would come with a complimentary sauce and pay extra for extra. My daughter had soup with salmon in it and she liked it. My friend had the salmon hibachi and the salmon was cooked and seasoned well.

Dee

Google
The food is well seasoned. Everything had good flavor, tasted fresh. The meat was tender and cooked well, rice fluffy, vegetables were great, too. Food was made to order and the cook time was less than 20 minutes. I'd definitely make the trip again.

Yelp
Wow. Everything was so flavorful and delicious! The place is always packed so put your order in advance. Okinawa Tempura roll was good. The "sushi sauce" is basically eel sauce, so it's a hint of sweetness. The pieces are big, so one roll is filling enough. Koto Combo was a perfect shareable amount and you get a little of everything. We added teriyaki sauce and the option to cook the food in it. There was a lot of flavor this way, but I'm sure without this option it's just as good. Everything was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The veggies were a perfect cook - not too soft but still a little crunch. I highly recommend this place! I will be back soon!

Yelp
Koto has become a go to spot for Fast Food Hibachi for me. I discovered this place on Tik Tok and knew I had to try them out. I did place my order online and it told me that it would be ready in about 20-30 mins. When I walked in, I was greeted, and I walked to the counter and I let them know that I had placed an order online. They asked my name and my food was ready and waiting. I ordered Koto Combo with no vegetables side of Noodles and Garlic and Yum Yum Sauce. The Combo comes with Shrimp, Steak and Chicken all were seasoned very well. I enjoyed the sauces on the food as they gave it a little more flavor. I wasn't a fan of the noodles as they didn't give me that true Hibachi Noodles. Koto gives me the hibachi taste without the wait and the show (Nothing wrong with the show but when you seen one you've seen them all). Price rang is very affordable for what you get. This is a place that I frequent often and I have tried a few things.
google avatar

Trina K.

Yelp
If you don't mind not seeing "the show" (onion volcanoes, beating hearts, rolling eggs) or having soup or salad, the flavor is phenomenal. So is the garlic sauce. For about $38, the combo is a large portion. Heavy on the rice. In terms of ambiance, it's more of a carry out business on a corner with a fair amount of metered parking. If you wanted to eat your meal there, there's about eight (8) two person tables. SERVICE: Each time I placed my order online and was pleased that it's ready much sooner than than predicted. I hope this BoB thrives and expands to offer a true hibachi type dining experience. Definitely worth checking out.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Not authentic at all and everything was overcooked. Staffs were not helpful which made me think they are not professional. Consider there are bunch of other authentic places, we think it's not worth a try.
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
I saw it on a instagram reel and it sparked my interest. It was a bit of a drive for me . If that was my hood , I would frequent often. I had the Koto combo with a side of noodles. The flavor and the additional sauces were phenomenal . I believe that the amount of shrimp, steak , chicken and vegetables were appropriate. A relatively small dining area with 10 or 12- 2 person tables. Food came out fresh and hot . Staff was friendly and informative.

Yelp
I think I learned about this restaurant on Instagram. Food was amazing. My husband actually picked it up for us. We didn't feel like cooking within for like thinking about food, but we know we're hungry. So I was able to call the order in and young lady was very nice on the phone and let us try a variety of sauces. What we end up getting was the combo order which was the salmon and the chicken and the yum. Yum sauce I believe is called amazing tonight at 10:00. I'll definitely not cheap. Both orders are saying together. We're about $65 and that's for carry out. Definitely quality but don't expect anything to be cheap here

Yelp
EBI TEMPURA is amazing!! The taste, the texture, it's so good! 100% recommended, please is clean and staff is very friendly!
google avatar

Wynetta S.

Yelp
Food was good and the customer service was great! The young lady was very pleasant. I look forward to returning

Yelp
Food lacked flavor. Interesting experience but I wasn't impressed by the meals. I'm not knocking the place but it isn't a place I can't wait to return. Try it. You might like it more than I did.
google avatar

Yelp
Restaurant is nice, clean, and conveniently located. The staff was very nice and accommodating. The food has good portion sizes but most of it was pretty mediocre. However, my Okinawa sushi roll was delicious. The noodles were very disappointing in flavor but hot and fresh. I may return to try again but I've had better.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
The service went very well. The staff is patient. Kitchen staff was caught cleaning when service slowed. Ordered the Hibachi Steak-Medium. My date ordered Hibachi shrimp with noodles and yum yum sauce. Excellent dishes. Also ordered Philadelphia roll. Cold roll consisted of much more cream cheese than one liked.
google avatar

Candice B.

Yelp
Miso soup with salmon fresh salmon flavorful soup. Avocado & rice sushi delicious. chix entree big portion tender chix delicious. Noodles are good. Sushi roll with the tempura shrimp in it delicious very flavorful
google avatar

Alicia W.

Yelp
The food was great. Great customer service. It was my first time there. I thought the overall mood was pretty decent for a fast food restaurant. Everyone was friendly. It was close to the e-way. And close enough to the L.
google avatar

Catherine E.

Yelp
I am not sure if it's safe to say but this restaurant has been hit or miss. I became a fan after ordering twice and the food was good. Today is my third time ordering from here. I only had a taste for some noodles. I ordered take-out. I get home and it was obvious that these noodles were not like the times before. Some noodles were darker than the other. Some noodles seemed either over or under cooked and there was NO seasoning. None! To be fair I asked my daughter to taste them and she agreed. Definitely different than previous orders. Maybe the cook was not happy with having to work on a very cold below zero temperature.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
I drive by all the time and today I finally gave them a shot off Uber eats. Food was flavorful and amazing. The spicy koto sauce is fire. I had the hibachi teriyaki chicken and noodles. I will be back and hope to try other lobster n steak next time
google avatar

Yelp
Food was so fresh, flavorful (well seasoned), and delicious! Customer Service is fantastic! I ordered online it said 40 min but I arrived in 20 min and it was ready. I got the combo with Shrimp, Chicken, and Shrimp. I loved the Koto Spicy Sauce, Garlic Sauce, and Ginger Sauce (I got them all on the side) so I could taste them all and they all were great! It's a perfect food to-go spot!
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
I order the steak, shrimp hibachi and a salmon bowl. They were not cheap and so salty its unbelievable. I've had salty food but this is over the top!
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
My opinion in regards to Koto is slightly above average. Let's be honest, hibachi is a dime a dozen with basically no differentiating components between one or the other. There's pros here such as the "yum yum" sauce has a slight kick to it as well as it being a huge amount of food. The cons are probably the price simply because it's takeout, because of how it's plated the rice steams in the container leaving you with soggy rice by the time you get home & lastly they charge for noodles however if you went to a sit down hibachi said noodles would be included. I love the location & its proximity to my neighborhood, twas a 10 minute ride for me. I'd eat here again but only if I'm not in the mood to sit down at a real hibachi restaurant.

Karen W.

Yelp
Meat is cut too big... chunky, other than that the food is decent. Service was helpful and kind

NiNi F.

Yelp
Been meaning to try this place. For some reason I thought it was a dine in restaurant. You can order your food and eat it there, but definitely a to go establishment. The atmosphere is comparable to any to go place with minimum seating. Service was average, nothing really did out.

Yelp
It's a nice small establishment, clean and has a nice vibe. While it's not hibachi cooked at your table the chefs are in view. Menu isn't extensive but I feel it has something for everyone. I love that they have sushi! Together my bae and I had the chicken hibachi (sans egg, sesame seeds, and zucchini), a side of noodles, and we also had the Toro sushi rolls. You get a container packed full of food. We got both the spicy koto sauce and garlic sauce and TBH I didn't taste much flavor in either. Parking is street not main and community find it as you approach (can be limited).

Ashley W.

Yelp
Was in the mood for hibachi and remembered seeing this restaurant in a food feature. I was excited to try it. I called ahead and ordered the steak hibachi meal with a side of noodles. It was ready when expected and the lady at the counter was nice. For $31 this definitely was not worth the price. The noodles and rice were extremely salty and I ordered my steak medium but it was over cooked, tough and inedible. Money down the drain....I went out of my way to come here and it was disappointing.
google avatar

Alphonso G.

Yelp
Me and my wife tried this place out the other day because we believe in supporting black owned businesses. We ordered online and it said that our food would be ready at 2:40pm. I ended up waiting inside the establishment until 3:22 for our food. That alone left a sour taste in my mouth. Then we get home and open our food she's missing half her order and my food was bland and greasy. We were both extremely upset and disappointed with our service, and the quality of food that was served to us. I instantly called, and was "TOLD" that we would be given a full refund which is yet to be seen.

Victor S.

Yelp
Went there with my fiancé, and we were very excited to try the hibachi. We were stunned when it came out to 80$ for 2 plates. Sushi was awful! And did not meet to good sushi expectations. Hibachi was good but wasn't worth the price, especially since it's to go. Overall I wouldn't not come here again.

Cheri R.

Yelp
Great Food! I enjoyed very bite. I generally don't eat rice however this rice was well flavored along with the steak and vegetables
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
Food and service good! I would definitely recommend this place to everyone who loves hibachi
google avatar

Patrice M.

Yelp
This is a great new Hibachi spot. Although the menu was varied there was only one vegetarian option. After a very nice conversation with by one of the owners Cam, I was assured that vegetarian options were coming soon. The rice and vegetables dish I had was very tasty. The veggies were crisp and tender with a good blend of spices. The service was fantastic with friendly staff.

Kelli D.

Yelp
Ordered from ChowNow and OMG...it was soooo good!!! We had the noodles with chicken teriyaki and the torro roll! The roll was amazing! The food was fresh and cooked to perfection with the right amount of seasoning. The yum yum sauce and garlic sauce were the perfect accents! Chef's kiss Koto!!

Brandi A.

Yelp
Love this place ! Fast friendly service and great food I will definitely be back !!! Check them out you won't be disappointed. Treat the hot sushi

Yelp
everything omg so damm delicious please never ever close!!!!!! i'm your number one foodie fan. oh yeah i just een you much deserved restaurant's viewing on t.v congrats. best food ever god bless you all thank you.....love

Barry Y.

Yelp
Saw the place as I was driving by and wanted to give it a try. Food is okay, considering that it's not cooked by any Asian people. I had the teriyaki chicken and sushi, the chicken was covered in a sauce and the sushi was bland. Don't know if I would go back

GJ L.

Yelp
I order the Shrimp Hitachi Garlic sauce with side order of Noodles The food tasted great and plentiful. The downfalls are too much rice and limited parking. I Love the seasonings and will order again..
google avatar

Cassandra C.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I had the salmon hibachi. It was flavorful and the serving was huge. Ate the remaining for lunch the next day!!!! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Gregg F.

Yelp
This place was not on my radar, I happened upon it by accident. The first that I actually enjoyed an accident. The Hibachi Chicken was on point, the chicken was tender and juicy. The mixed veggies were grilled just right. I will definitely patronize the establishment again in the near future.

Gemini Q.

Yelp
We ordered a few Habachi dinners 2/2/2024. Not only did we not receive a couple of the dinners, I paid for extra sauce that was not given as well as the sauce that was supposed to come with the dinners was not there as well. They are incompetent and I will never order from there again!!!

Bibi A.

Yelp
The ambiance and food were disappointing. My family and I love hibachi and though we knew this wasn't a typical traditional hibachi (where you experience fresh food cooked in front of you), we gave Koto Hibachi a try. We had two orders of the chicken hibachi and one order of the shrimp hibachi. Food: Overall, good flavor, but very salty. Fried rice was salty and oily. Noodles loaded on salt/soy. While it looks like a lot of food--it's really the rice--that's the filler. Service: You order at the counter. Staff was ok, not very friendly. Food is given to you in takeout containers though you have the option of eating there. There are a variety of soft drinks to choose from in a fridge; water is only available bottled. Ambiance: Cozy, but felt stuffy that day. The music blaring from the kitchen and the TV in the dining area were loud. I asked them to mute the TV and they kindly did so. I don't think I'll go back again. The prices are high and the quality of the food just didn't feel like it matched the $72 price tag. While I was excited for Hibachi in the neighborhood I left disappointed.
google avatar

Mimi B.

Yelp
This was my first visit to this restaurant. The cashier, I believe the owners child, was super helpful and made sure to answer all questions asked. I thought it was cute when she made sure to tell me that the rolls were sushi and not egg rolls. I ordered the combo hibachi with a side of noodles. I also got one of the fried rolls. I must say everything was exceptionally delicious. I'm definitely going back soon!!!

Raquel R.

Yelp
The food was so unseasoned and the rice tasted like just egg. It doesn't come with yum yum sauce thats an extra charge. I was so disappointed about this food I took 2 bites and had to stop eating. I ended up going home to cook because the taste was so bad. The food needs to be given more love an flavor.

Mike S.

Yelp
Food was great and the service was beyond! They forgot to put sauce in my bag so when I called about it they delivered it to me for free What's hibachi with that Yum Yum
google avatar

Simone R.

Yelp
Food was good! Owners were very friendly, and there was available street parking! Will be back soon to try the sushi!

Nika M.

Yelp
The service at Koto is awesome. Young woman behind the counter is wonderful. The sushi we had was fresh and good. However, I have to say that the rice falls very short. It tastes gummy and cheesy. My husband stated it tasted like rice o roni. The meat and fish (my family had chicken, shrimp and lobster hibachis) part of it was good but the rice really ruined the meal because they give you so much of it. It is not fried rice. The noodles were so salty that my noodle loving daughter could not eat it. All of us left 70 percent of our rice untouched. This place has the potential of being great if they can make authentic fried rice and greatly reduce their reliance on salt/soy in the noodles. The ambiance is fine.

Terri L.

Yelp
Open concept is great! You can watch your meal being prepared. It only took about 10 minutes. There is ample parking. The food is delicious and fresh! Seasoned really well that you don't need sauce. There's also enough food for two meals.
google avatar

Djoreo W.

Yelp
Heard about it on the internet, stopped by and I was blown away by the service. The food was amazing ambiance was true to chicago culture and the Japanese way of cooking the food. Will definitely be back and would absolutely recommend to anybody reading this.

Denise D.

Yelp
This should be named KOTO To Go. It is definitely hibachi and it's very good, but it's set up for carry out only with tables if you want to dine in. Food is served in carry out containers if you dine in and if you want water it's $2.75 for a bottle they don't offer complimentary water. It is my belief if you offer dine in seating water should be complimentary. Food was very good highly recommend it.

Janice B.

Yelp
The Food Is Excellent , The Service done with a smile. I've found a new place for me to have a wonderful Lunch 2-3xs a week. Thank you
google avatar

Quinn B.

Yelp
really good. i randomly stumbled upon this place as i was driving by and decided to give it a try. got the hibachi shrimp. super yummy. super quick. owner was really nice. i'll definitely be back.

Becca W.

Yelp
First time being in there with friends and the guy who took our order was very helpful in telling us about the menu and recommending things. Food was amazing along with the sauces and I will definitely be back when I am in the area. I wish I knew about this place before!

Kathleen R.

Yelp
I had chicken hibachi on my 1st visit and it became my favorite on the the first bite. The chicken was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. The vegetables were very good. My only complaint was there were not more veggies. On my second visit I had shrimp hibachi. It also was well seasoned and very good overall. Make sure you get a sauce for your hibachi, it's the flavor explosion that makes it special. On my most recent visit I had the shrimp tempura roll. I did not know what to expect, not being a sushi expert. That roll was so good that I can't wait to go back for another.

Nina D.

Yelp
Food is incredible! I tried the Philly role and chicken hibachi .... Seriously best habachi I have ever had. Food was seasoned great and sauces were on point - I will be back!

Logan Vs Luke C.

Yelp
would have never noticed this gem, but should stop and stop it! food was good... we had sushi, steak hibachi, and salmon hibachi. clean and very welcoming. we will be back!
