The 38 Essential Tokyo Restaurants

"Kozue has some of the best views in the metropolis from the 40th floor of the iconic Park Hyatt Tokyo, a view made famous in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. Chef Nobuhiro Yoshida sources seafood directly from fishermen, who send him photos or videos of their catch while they’re still out at sea so that selections arrive the same day to the restaurant. Seasonal sashimi is presented over a bowl of crushed ice and wagyu beef hot pot arrives on exquisite tableware. Elevate the meal with a flight of sake from the impressive list." - Yukari Sakamoto, Robbie Swinnerton

Excellent dinner at one of the Park Hyatt Tokyo’s world-class restaurants. Course menu with an amazing view of Tokyo. The service and food were superb, as expected for the price. Of special note, the crockery used was beautiful and clearly handmade. When we inquired, the waiter explained it was from a single pottery maker in rural Japan and each piece was unique. The attention to detail was lovely and enhanced our total experience.

Excellent meal with stunning views. I am sure the views helped influence the food. The food was crafted with care and elegance. Each course was served timely and the waiter described each dish in detail. It was truly a memorable experience.

Google
Pricey, but for a glamorous Tokyo experience this was great for our party of tourists. The room and view is jaw-dropping and the ambiance and service perfect. The food was exquisitely presented too, but what impressed me most was the subtlety of the dishes - clean and nourishing with a focus on traditional vegetables and fish. A hotpot of fish, mushrooms and cabbage sounds like peasant food but wow, it was incredible.

Spectacular views and beautiful food, but the sashimi in my set didn’t feel very fresh . Still great value for money and great service!

Google
What a Japanese culinary experience! Everything was divine! The service was excellent, the atmosphere was serene and the food was out of this world! Each and every dish surpassed the others. My first dish was a extremely silky tofu that I still think about. The seafood was so delicate and fresh. The wine was refreshing and paired beautifully with the seafood. It is expensive but totally worth it.

Really beautiful restaurant and superb service. A little expensive for what it was, but we left full

I was overall disappointed in our visit to Kozue, which I planned as our “nicest” dinner. The staff were very professional and kind. The room is beautiful but they had depressing, ominous music playing, which brought the mood down. The food was our worst meal yet. We ordered the Japanese appetizers, grilled mushrooms, which consisted of raw, unseasoned mushrooms that we had to grill ourselves at the table, and we also had a boar hot pot. All of the food was bland, uninteresting and the boar was chewy and fatty. I cannot recommend this restaurant, especially for the price and ESPECIALLY in Tokyo where you can get phenomenal food for a bargain.

This is good, but it could have been great. We had booked a 9-course meal which was great, but our waitress was so eager to do her job that we didn't get a chance to finish some of the meals before she came to take the dishes away. This continued even after we reminded her that we were still eating. The whole experience was efficiently prosecuted in 90 mins.

Yelp
The food here was average. The views and service were very good, +1. The presence of a service charge on the bill was very not good, -1.

Yelp
Looks can be deceiving. A fancy restaurant sitting atop the 41st floor of the Park Hyatt (Filmed in "Lost in Translation") this was a restaurant recommended by a blog from Findmefoodie. The views are incredible and one of the two few deciding factors that changes my mind from rating it a 3 star experience. The other is the service and plating. Each individual plate and bowl were fine craftsmanship. If only the same could be said about the food. Everything was pretty bland. With exception to the wagyu beef which was melt in your mouth ... nothing was really fantastic. For the curious travelers, I would choose curry tonkatsu over this place any day of the week.

Yelp
I chose this restaurant based on numerous articles on the best restaurants to check out in Japan (where "Lost in Translation" was filmed). My best friend and I came here, and this was our one big splurge of the night. Not only that, but it took us forever to get here via public transport. The best thing about this restaurant is the view. You get the whole breathtaking sight of Tokyo. The restaurant itself looks sleek but traditional. The way they present the food is incredibly artful and the service is superb (all service in Japan was actually quite superb)! Food on the other hand was MEH. For the prices we paid (spent $400!), I expected our dishes to taste better. We could have gotten a better meal at the Fish Market! If you're looking for and out of body experience, I'd skip Kozue and try getting a reservation at one of the michelin star restaurants.

Yelp
Fancy restaurant on the Park Hyatt Hotel. A definite place to bring a date to. But if you are a tourist and want to partake of what Japanese food really taste like in Japan, this might not be the place to go to. It's probably what we call gourmet. All the dishes we ordered were presented beautifully much like most of the food they serve all over Japan. As I try to recall our experience, no dish actually stood out. If you're looking for one night to splurge and couldn't get that elusive reservation at any of the 3 Michelin starred restaurants in the city, this may be a good place to go to. Service was great, restaurant is romantic and the view of Tokyo is excellent.

Yelp
I've been to a few kaiseki restaurants in Japan and this has to be my least favorite. I think there are better options. On a positive note, the view and sake tasting menu was amazing.

Yelp
Beautiful views are mostly worth the cost here. Service was excellent and attentive, with servers in kimonos. The food was nothing special, somewhat small portions and a bit bland. Good miso soup. The sashimi assortment had a full shrimp with head and eyes included.
