FTC Wants to Block the $24.6 Billion Deal Which Would Combine Jewel and Mariano’s | Eater Chicago

"Operating stores across 36 states and serving as the parent company of a regional premium-format chain, this grocer says it needs greater scale to compete with non-unionized national rivals and has proposed the large merger to achieve that. The company offered to divest select assets to a regional wholesaler as part of the plan, but regulators contend the proposed remedies overlook many local markets where the two chains compete and would still reduce competition, risking higher prices and weaker labor outcomes for grocery workers." - Ashok Selvam

LA’s Biggest Grocery Stores Avoid Worker Strike With New Union Contract | Eater LA

"The mega-chain’s financial and managerial decisions helped drive labor tensions: its operating profit reportedly doubled to $4.3 billion between 2019 and 2021, top executive pay reached roughly $22.4 million in 2020, and an early pandemic $2-an-hour hazard bonus for frontline workers was ended after two months. The company also responded to local “hero pay” measures by closing several regional stores and had previously threatened additional closures—actions that drew criticism from workers and rights groups even as the retailer later reached a new contract that raises pay and adds safety protections for thousands of employees." - Mona Holmes

This is a great store going through some renovations so it is a bit of a mess. Otherwise, it is huge, spacious, and filled to the brim with lots of items. The produce section is massive. There are a lot of sections such as health, oriental and more. It was loaded with helpful staff when I went. Great store, just be advised of the renovations.

Google
I have no complaints about the product or my overall shopping experience with Kroger. This review is to highlight one specific area that Kroger needs to improve—the carpet cleaner rental service. I spent 30 minutes performing a deep cleaning before returning the machine. The Kroger employee spent 10 seconds finding two tiny pieces of debris hidden inside. Then they told me I could not get my $40 deposit back because of this. If they had told me their cleaning standards beforehand, I could have taken the extra 10 seconds to remove those pieces. Instead, they chose to keep my money. I’m a perfectionist in life, and if my standards cannot pass their scrutiny, I bet 95% of customers wouldn’t be able to get their deposit back—and might even end up paying an extra cleaning fee. In cases like this, Kroger could either: 1. Clearly point out their standards and allow customers to finish the minor cleaning, or 2. Deduct only a portion of the deposit based on the amount of cleaning work still required.

Google
This store has a really solid selection of plant based food. These are not all in one place, but scattered around the store. Kroger seems big on the new plant based burgers that are coming out, and has their own product, called Emerge, as well as Lightlife and Beyond Burger. The non-dairy cheeze selection is a little light, with mainly Daiya; I'd like to see Miyoko's and Follow Your Heart. Non-dairy yogurt is good, but it would be great if they added So Delicious. I buy a lot of Amy's Kitchen frozen meals, and these were in different locations, rather than all in one place. So it's worth hunting around to find them. The selection could be a little better, but so far, it's the best all in one place shopping for plant based foods in Blacksburg.

Google
I feel like this is the best Kroger location in the area, and I have always been satisfied shopping here. They offer a much better selection of products than the alternative grocery stores, and it always is an clean place to shop as well. The deli is also amazing. I would give a 5 star review, but the fact that there is apparently a bar here that serves alcohol is a detracting factor for me. I am of the opinion that a bar does not belong in a grocery store where children are present often, I just think there's something not right about that.

Google
I like the dark chocolate. I find it is not easy to buy some specific brand with using the weekly digital coupons. There are out of the stock and can not have the rain checks to buy later.

Ryan R.

Google
I come grocery shopping here at least once a week. It is clearly the most superior grocery store in Blacksburg by a landslide. The produce section is massive and always well organized and fresh. The bakery is great and always smells delicious. There is even a sushi, salad, and alcohol bar! This place has everything. Also the deals are great and saving points to get discounted gas is really easy. I would 100% recommend this Kroger location to anyone who lives in Blacksburg or even Christiansburg

Wonderful plant and flower selection. Beer and wine bar. Great Pharmacy. Helpful /super friendly staff..

The store was clean and well stocked. The store appears to be under some renovation.

Yelp
Colloquially known as the Gucci Kroger, this store is far larger and nicer than the other one in town. Selection and prices are great. But for me the highlight was the bar serving a dozen or so different beers catering for every taste, as well as a similar number of red and white wines. The drink prices are half what you'd pay in a bar/restaurant elsewhere in town, so there's a limit of 3 per person. There is talk that Kroger are going to close the "Kro-bar" and turn it into a cheese counter. It would a shame if that were to happen. Instead I could a cheese stall that also serves wine and beer would be a huge success.

Billy M.

Yelp
The deli closed at 6 pm tonight, and I got in line at 5:45 pm. When I got to the front of the line at 6:03, they told me they were closed. Employee was super rude, but the other person being helped was very nice and made light of the situation. One of the few places in Blacksburg that isn't very friendly! But the store is clean inside and has clear signage, so I gave them two stars for that.

Yelp
This was a pretty decent Kroger that we went, and when we were in Blacksburg Virginia. It had some things that we like that it had some pretty cool environment and drinking section which I thought was awesome.

Yelp
I love Kroger as a grocery store but the Kroger bar needs to get its act together. If you don't know, going to the Kroger bar is a staple of the classic University bucket list that you receive in orientation. We came around happy hour to enjoy a few drinks. A couple of people in our party were not drinking and simply at the table. The lady working the bar waited ten minutes and after our friends got their drinks to come over and harshly scold us telling us we were in the wrong because she hadn't checked our ids, we handed them over nicely and she continued to scold us. Another small group of students came in to start off a bar crawl, super respectful and clearly not inebriated yet. She made them leave without a clear reason. Several customers came in who were clearly under 30 but she did not card them despite that being the apparent policy. We were all 21 so being carded was not an issue- however it felt as though we were being targeted for being college students as well as young women. I understand being worried about rowdy students but our group and the other group were both respectful and calm. The workers at the Kroger bar need to seriously reevaluate their attitude.

Yelp
Hit the kro-bar today... had a good time with friends, cheap flavorful beer and nice service! Definitely going to come back!

Owen ..

Yelp
Nice well-appointed store with great variety, nice green grocer section with all points covered from the exotic to the mundane . Pleasant helpful staff and clean and tidy grocery.

Guy C.

Yelp
As usual Kroger has only two registers open and I am waiting in like for 8 minutes. Horrible customer service as expected

Yelp
This is a REALLY nice Kroger -- excellent selections of all kinds of good stuff. I really enjoyed the small cheese sample box which allowed me to pick up several new kinds to try without breaking the bank. The wine section is pretty decent for a grocery store. Also a full tasting bar! You can get 5 different wine/beer tastings per day. That's crazy! If you have the Kroger card, you get a discount on gas, which was a nice perk for us. If we lived in Blacksburg, this would probably be our go-to grocery store.

Yelp
Fantastic store. I would say all the Kroger stores in the area have their own strengths and weaknesses. This is now my local Kroger after moving across town from the university city Boulevard location. I like the wider aisles in this store and the added space for produce, cheese, and general navigation. Always plenty of checkouts open. If I'm comparing to the university city store, the only downside of this one is the other side of the coin of having so much space - it takes a little longer to navigate the store or pick up things in the far corners. I strongly prefer this store over the other options in the area and I think they have top level selection and specialty items, even when compared to the boutique options like earth fare nearby. i've been shopping at Kroger since I was in college and appreciate them always keeping their stores up-to-date and with solid current offerings to follow nutrition, and taste trends.

Yelp
Really large selection, but high prices overall. It's also the only place in town where you can see 100 people, and literally everyone is wearing a face diaper. Feel free to stop by if you like living in a George Orwell novel, but try Aldi in Christiansburg if you want to be around less uptight people, and also save 20%.

Yelp
I hate to say this is the best thing about Blacksburg, but this store is bad ass! Normally I'm not a Kroger shopper. This store changed my mind (and possibly my life). It's huge and instead of being stocked with stupid, cheap-ass BOGO merchandise it has nice products and an enormous fresh foods section. Gorgeous produce, specialty cheeses, a big deli, and a gourmet bistro. They actually have a chef on-staff that works at the bistro counter. One night I left there with fresh leg of lamb, grilled asparagus, and some kind of Brussels sprout cole slaw. DEE-LISH-UHS!

Yelp
I don't know why this Kroger has a lower rating than the University City location, but hopefully I can help change that. This Kroger is very big and every time I have been it has always been very well stocked. They also just added a VERY nice looking wine/beer tasting bar where you can taste various (rotating) wines and beers. I haven't actually tasted any from it yet, but I can say that it is a very impressive and clean setup to look at and I am looking forward to going to it next time I pick up groceries.

Yelp
This location is decent too say the least. The location is huge and has lots of options but with that being said I still find it hard to find specific items. It isn't the neatest location but clean enough. After visiting this location, I would definitely prefer the other Kroger in town.

Yelp
HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED!!! The management and certain employees (cheese department) are highly discrimatory to the college students that shop there! This is highly disappointing especially since the store resides in a college town. My girlfriend and I attempted to purchase a block of cheese but had it TAKEN RIGHT OUT OF OUR CART by an employee without asking! When we went to express our concerns about the situation the manager (His name is Mike), he had no interest in listening to us, sided solely with his employee, and shoved us away! Both employees clearly showed ageism towards us!!! This situation was highly disappointing and will deter me from returning to the store ever again. You can not discriminate against the largest proportion of clients you see....COLLEGE STUDENTS!

Yelp
The website said that the pharmacy opened at 9 AM I Showed up at 9:10 and there was a notice that the pharmacy was opening at 10 doing only vaccinations between nine and 10. of course there was no one there.

Yelp
The good: This store is always very clean. It's a large location with a good selection of produce, meats, dairy, and alcohol. The staff is helpful and friendly. Milk and eggs are always super cheap here. There's a lot of great deals on produce and meat as well if you get things on sale. I'd say that everything is generally well priced (except maybe their beer--all 6 packs cost around $10). The bad: The store is always out of items. Kroger's supply chain management must be horrendous as half the time I come here, I leave without all of the items on my shopping list. I've never been to a grocery store where the shelves are consistently empty until now. They also don't do a good job of throwing away moldy produce on their shelves. After taking home a pint of raspberries with a moldy one at the bottom, I make sure to always check any produce I get from here. Some other moldy things I've seen on their shelves include strawberries and onions. Gross. The ugly: The lines get pretty bad sometimes, but they've installed a lot of self-checkouts to help mitigate that. I don't mind waiting in line if I have a cart filled with items because I can checkout faster as someone is usually helping to bag groceries. Sadly, this isn't always the case as the person bagging groceries sometimes leaves for no apparent reason after bagging a few items, and I end up having to bag everything else myself. In the future, I think I'm just going to skip the lines, and go through self-checkout to avoid the poor service.

Yelp
There are two Kroger's within a quick drive of my home and this is the one I prefer. It's clean, the selection is decent, and their produce seems to be relatively fresh. Any time I've needed help the workers have been quick to respond, leading me over to what I needed or finding someone else who knew where to find what I needed. Now, it's no Wegman's but no store is Wegman's except Wegman's. Thankfully there doesn't seem to be an overlap in their coverage areas so for now, for as long as I live here in Blacksburg, I'll be a Kroger man! Oh, and I love the points that help save money on gas! $100 spent in the store equals $.10 off per gallon, which is a great deal.

Yelp
This location is HUGE! This grocery store has everything you need which is good because in a small town you have a limited selection. This store has produce, pet care products, grocery items, a pharmacy, and many other items! The store is nice and clean, has plenty of parking, and customer service is good. Tip: Make sure to sign up for their rewards card to get additional savings.

Charles S.

Yelp
Check out the beer and wine tasting area! $2 and $3 pints of craft beer are being offered. Where else can you get a deal like this? At the Kroger in Cave Spring the prices are $2 per pint higher. Wine tasting too. Take advantage before Blacksburg raises its prices.

Yelp
I noticed that many of the reviews here that gave this store 4 or more stores do not list Blacksburg as their residence. As a Blacksburg resident, I would say this store falls short in many respects, especially when you have to rely on it for shopping on a regular basis (it definitely needs more competition). One of the major problems when shopping here is that they are always, even at the busiest times of the day, stocking shelves, which translates to traffic jams and carts with boxes left in front of the stock in very inconvenient palaces. The stockers are rude and pretend you aren't there when you want to grab something behind their cart or need to get by. Not to mention, recent (constant?) reorganization of the store has recently rendered the aisles to be narrower than previously, making the situation worse. Having said the employees are always stocking the shelves, I cannot understand how their stock is so frequently lacking. I've noticed cereals like Muslei being out of stock for more than two weeks on end. Forget it if you want to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. The Pharmacy is also often out of stock so I have to go to CVS to fill prescriptions, which means another trip. I used to enjoy grocery shopping but my recent shopping experiences at Kroger have repeatedly put me in a bad mood. I wish I could avoid it... Hopefully one day we will get a trader joes or some competition for this store.

Yelp
I want to say Krogers pharmacy is the place to go if you are out of state. I needed two of prescriptions filled. I tried to use CVS but come to find out they don't take my insurance. I was told that Kroger would take my insurance. Thanks for the great customer service

Lynzey M.

Yelp
Way better than the other Kroger really friendly staff great prices and deals on items

Ken D.

Yelp
I've lived in Blacksburg for 10 years. Whenever I'm away I experience what great supermarkets do. We have shopped in Publix and other places, and their shelves are always well stocked, items are easy to find, and if not, an associate quickly walks you to where it can be found.....with a smile on his or her face. So.Main St. Krogers is the opposite.....their associates never smile. At the self checkout today, Tina, a long time employee, was chewing food while she unsmilingly helped with the clunky machine at the same time talking to another clerk about her upcoming "break". So rude! The shelves are poorly stocked, contrary to other reviewers' experience, and trying to find items is always frustrating since they're moved so often. I very rarely write reviews. If I do, they're generally applauding a person/facility's good work. But today's experience prompted me to tell others about my experience and to recommend avoiding this place. I've spoken with the unsmiling and seemingly uncaring manager about problems my wife and I have had with the store. But nothing has changed. Let's bring competition to Blacksburg!

Yelp
Easily the best selection of any grocery store around, and the prices are good too.

G P.

Yelp
I prefer this Kroger to the one on university blvd. I am always really impressed at its selection, and all the produce is very fresh and the deli department has a great selection of boars head meats and cheeses. If you are just passing through or in a rush to eat they have an area in the front with tables where you can relax with a coffee or have lunch, I've found it to be a less expensive and healthier option to just go into Kroger and buy something pre-made for lunch that stop at a fast food place. I'm a college student and really appreciate the prices, the Kroger card is invaluable and gets you a discount at the Kroger gas stations. It has great options like a sushi bar and pretty decent bakery, plus really good prices. Parking can get tight during popular hours, but the place is open 24/7 so you can run in and get something in an emergency if you need to.

cindy g.

Yelp
Horrible decline. They have drastically cut back on the variety of products - so now you are only offered Kroger brand cheese (which is crap), Kroger brand canned vegetables and fruit (also crap - as was made evident when I purchased a $2.99 can of mostly rotten artichokes.) There are a total of two live checkout people, which for the elderly, who don't know how to navigate the self-checkout process, means they are waiting in line for an inordinate amount of time. Their self check out system isn't user friendly, just an automated voice harassing incessantly and then, God forbid, if you have a coupon it's like a major ordeal. In Kroger's rush to be competitive they are losing all their edge. Now I only buy meat and shop the soda deals at Kroger. All my other business goes to WalMart and on occasion, Food Lion. There are many people I talk to who are moving away from Kroger shopping already - and when Whole Foods or Fresh Market hits Blacksburg in the very near future, Kroger will be considered a joke. Kroger, you'd better take heed. Many of the products I bought regularly a year ago are no longer available at your store, and the cheap crap you're selling instead costs twice as much and is three times worse. And your salad bar and wings or chicken parts bar are disgusting. Your prepared foods, such as "meatloaf," "chicken parmesan," "blackened chicken," and "healthy salad," or whatever that rancid looking crap is in the large stainless steel tray - what a shame. You are going to get some real competition very soon. Good luck. Good riddance. What a shambles you have become.
google avatar

Shaun W.

Yelp
Nice selection. Usually good parking though parking can be challenging at peak shopping hours. I wish they'd have an employee staffing a checkout line late at night which is when I'm usually there. Late night shoppers have to check themselves out. Not a huge deal really. They seem to do a good job plowing the lot promptly when there's a snow storm. And the gas station in the parking lot is very convenient.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
This store is a great place, some of the finest veggies and meats for cooking around. They have a huge beer selection in the cave and wonderfully prepared foods. A must visit if you're looking for a great dinner!
google avatar

Deborah H.

Yelp
Definitely the best in the area and this time i noticed they have more variety; i was even able to cook a decent Indian (Asian) meal using ingredients from the store.

Paddy D.

Yelp
Great beer selection, but the produce is better elsewhere.

Jake M.

Yelp
The people that work behind the sushi booth are sorcerers, they can whip up some pretty good sushi considering what they have to work with. It's well priced and tastes alright. The fried shrimp they offer is also fantastic.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
By far the best grocery store in the area. Great fresh sushi, best selection of cheese, beer & wine selection is fantastic.

k h.

Yelp
This grocery store is huge. You can easily get lost in here for an hour and not even realize it if you don't have a plan or list. They make their own sushi if you're into that kind of thing. It's definitely better than other grocery store sushi I've had, but it wouldn't be my first choice. The only reason why I'm knocking off one star is because they don't have non-dairy butter. Other than that, quite extensive choices.

John K.

Yelp
The best in town, but still leaves a lot to be desired.

Meg B.

Yelp
This is for the Kroger Pharmacy. Horrible all the way around. Terrible customer service. The techs try hard but have no support or guidance from the manager who doesn't seem to care that customer after customer after customer comes to the desk and has problems with their prescription. They misplaced one of mine, failed to get followup information on two other prescriptions after 3 days and posted our information somehow in someone else's profile. They told the people in front of me that they would have to call their doctor and get things straightened out. Every pharmacy I've ever used has called the doctor themselves for clarification if there was an issue. If you fill prescriptions here I would seriously check and make sure you have the correct medication as these people don't know whether they are coming or going. The most unprofessional pharmacy I have been to in a very very long time. I love the Kroger store, but this department is a great disappointment. The manager needs to do his job and help problem solve.

Jim S.

Yelp
The Bistro is amazing. Such unique recipes, very fresh, very filling. Today I had Cherry Coke Beef Ribs with spinach w/ artichokes and tomatoes, and chocolate peanut butter frying pan cake. I don't know why I eat lunch anywhere else.

Joseph P.

Yelp
Excellent selection of quality produce!

Yelp
this place is known as the gucci kroger for a reason. best grocery store in town
