Where To Eat Down The Shore: Long Beach Island - New York - The Infatuation

"Kubel’s feels like a locals-only spot. It’s a loud, dark bar that opened in 1927 near the docks in Barnegat Light with free popcorn, a few domestic beers, and a simple menu of things like clam strips and house chili. But it’s tough for any spot on the island to keep from being somewhat overrun during the summer anymore. Even still, Kubel’s is relatively low-key, and it’s a place everyone should check out at least once. Come during Happy Hour (4-6pm on weekdays), get some discounted beers and bar food while watching early-season baseball on TV, and you’ll feel like you’re part of the locals-only crowd." - Matt Tervooren, Tonya Russell

Tony and his brother, Chris Bourdain, had lunch here and talked about their childhoods on the beach. They had clams in drawn butter, which he says no matter where in the world he ate them, it reminds him of this spot. They also had fried clams and fries.

Rob's service was excellent, very attentive, made sure we had everything we needed Spicy margarita & blackberry bourbon Manhattan were good. They had the fireplace going which we sat next to, that was really nice. House salad with blue cheese was great, great dressing with chunks of blue cheese. Spicy cauliflower bites were tasty.

Great atmosphere, love the drinks, awesome food selections and friendly service. They are open all year round which is rare in LBI. Highly recommended and will definitely back soon.

The service was great, very efficient and our server was polite. The food was incredible! The stuffed clam appetizer was delicious, the fried shrimp basket had excellent shrimp; they were tender and the breading was nice. The crab cake sandwich was to die for!

Google
Loved our visit here! We sat at the bar for dinner. We got a few drinks, the crab dip appetizer, crab pot pie and the swordfish special. All the food was SO good. Bartenders and servers were friendly and attentive. Great time all around and highly recommend!

Google
Let's start with the good..... the service was great. Our server was engaging and attentive, very pleasant. This place has a great location and an awesome view of the bay and sunsets. We have been to this restaurant 3 times, and for the last time. Let's talk about the not so good.... It's a very busy place. You need a reservation during the season. The food is bland and flavorless, and the plate presentation is awful. This place is confused as to what kind of venue they want to be. Are they German, seafood, Cajun, pub, Korean BBQ....? I have no idea, but the menu is all over the map. I guess if you're in the mood for a German pub that also has some overpriced seafood and have a hankering for Korean BBQ, this could be the place for you. The prices are just stupid. $40 bucks for crab cakes.... come on. Maybe these are not Barnegat bay blue claws and are imported from Korea? Do they have blue claw crab in Korea? $34 bucks for flounder and $38 for swordfish? Sumptin isn't right. The flounder is in season in NJ and right in the bay, no!? The crab bisque was , well, I can't even describe it, but it's not winning and prize at Chowder Fest, that's for sure. Skip the drive all the way to Barnegat light. This place is just not worth the sunset view.

Google
I had an amazing experience here! From the excellent service, thank you Aidin and Jason Aidin's 1st night waiting and he was excellent, listened to my requests and was pleasant, friendly and professional. Great job training, Jason. The food was really good. My steak was a tad overcooked,( I ordered medium rare and was closer to medium)but I didn't mind because the sauce (and I am not a sauce fan) made up for it. Potatoes were tasty and so was the asparagus. I ate in the outside eating area (why wouldn't you?) I was seated immediately, there was a wait for inside, but I wanted outside anyway. I actually asked to move my table closer to the amazing view and my wonderful servers were accommodating with a smile! On top of all this, the sunset was amazing. I had an extremely stressful day and The Kubel's Experience melted that away. Thank you so much!

Chrissy

Google
Amazing little stop. Wonderful food. Amazing service at the bar. Lunch specials are 🔥! Loved it. Hostesses was a bit snotty but glad she didn't run us off from this little gem. Highly recommend. Outside seating available.

We had our food trail (Anthony Bourdain’s) in NJ and went to Kubel’s for lunch. Restaurant receptionist is not that welcoming but the waitress is awesome, she went above and beyond to provide us with excellent customer service. We ordered clam chowder, steamed clams and fried clam strips. We already knew what to order but one of them is no longer on the menu (fried clam strips). The waitress offered that they can make it for us and I’m so delighted. It’s a 5/5 for everything that we ordered. Hearty soup, tasty and fresh clams! It’s “clam-azing”!

Yelp
Nice local restaurant in a quiet part of town. Gets super busy. Long wait time but went by fast. We got a drink at the bar and waited. Server was nice. Food came out at good timing. Would go back

Yelp
This restaurant has been around for years. The food is great. We tried their German offerings during October. Very consistent. Service is good too!

Yelp
One of the last days of our LBI summer here and we scored an outside table watching the sunset! What a special time and delicious food here at Kubel's - a family fave! Great drinks and food all around. Perfect family place whether for lunch or dinner. We came for dinner this time with the 5 of us - my dad, husband and two 13yos so we needed a lot of food (as always!). Starters included pretzels with beer cheese (yum!) and likes it so much we ordered another! Got the spicy cauliflower bites and beef sliders. Daughter ordered the Italian combo: eggplant rollatine with chicken park and meatball over linguine - and if you think that sounds like a lot, it was (took home leftovers!), son ordered lobster roll which was generous portion also. I had the chicken & crab (chicken francaise with lump crabmeat on top with spinach, dad had the fish tacos, and my husband has the appetizer portion of chili and lobster bisque. We didn't have any room for dessert but went for a stroll and then went to wait in line at Poppy's ice cream just around the corner! You'll want to make sure you come to the North side of LBI if you're seeing Old Barney lighthouse or Biking Village shops!

Yelp
We had no problem getting a seat fast as a party of 2. We did see larger groups be told it would be an hour wait. This place is pretty big and so is the menu, with definite hits and misses. The service here is excellent. I liked the crab dip but would have liked to have a few larger pieces of crab. My husband loved the coconut shrimp. I wanted something small for dinner and I had the crab chowder special (ehh it reminded me of vegetable soup...again where is the crab?) and the shrimp cocktail, not the largest or most flavorful shrimp I've ever had but still decent. My husband had the Korean steak and scallops and I don't love Asian fusion dishes but the steak was superb in this dish. It's a something for everyone type of place which is nice.

Yelp
We went to Kubel's for the first time on 9/16/2023, as it was close to our rental house and seemed like a good low key choice for our first night. Got seated right away in the dining room and had drink orders taken. We ordered appetizers - French onion soup for my husband and a cup of lobster bisque for me. The French onion soup was fantastic! Rich beef broth and lots of cheese, just how my husband likes it. The lobster bisque was...terrible. It looks like pudding, it was far too thick, it was bland and not anything like lobster bisque should be. I knew it was lobster bisque due to the one solitary piece of lobster suspended in the thick goo. Salads came with the meal and were fine. We had to ask for bread in order to get it. Meals came while we were still eating salads, huge pet peeve. Oh the meals. It took a major turn to nasty town at this point. My husband's beef stroganoff was supposed to be "tender beef tips" but they were chewy and had a gross flavor. The sauce on the pasta was terrible and flavorless. He tried adding salt, but it was still inedible. He took a couple bites and left the rest. My "paella" was not in fact paella. Paella is a specific dish always prepared the same way, with saffron turning the rice yellow, and cooked in a pan until the rice is crispy. This was some sort of seafood stew in a soupy tomato broth with white rice mixed in. The scallops and shrimp were over cooked. It was all entirely flavorless. Not at all what I anticipated and not a good surprise. And not at all worth $38. Service was good. They didn't appear to be short staffed, as some other places on the island are in September. Lots of staff, everyone hustling. Our server was good, I actually feel bad for her that she spends her day serving people this terrible food. Our total before tip was $124, which is insane given the lack of quality in food preparation. This food was terrible, other than the French onion soup. They want to charge upscale prices, but serve subpar food. Stick to burgers or something like that if you must go here. Not sure why they offer items on the menu that they clearly can't execute. It's not like I special ordered something that they've never made before, these were menu items ordered as is with no modifications. And, the guy who sat with us told us the specials were "where it's at" and we had to try them. Falser words were never spoken. I'd never go there again.

Yelp
Hey! We just returned to Maryland after celebrating our daughter's engagement. During our trip, we had a wonderful experience at Kubel's Restaurant. It's a charming seaside spot with incredibly friendly staff. I absolutely loved the jambalaya I ordered - it was delicious! The restaurant offers outdoor seating in an open-air setting, and there's also a great bar area where both locals and visitors can socialize.

Warren B.

Yelp
The world's best scallops, from the commercial fishing fleet a stone's throw from the restaurant. A Barnegat Light tradition that keeps on delivering at a high standard.

Harold M.

Yelp
Service excellent, food excellent, ambience what a view , customer for 30+ years. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
Sunset was an extra wow factor. Drinks were great, service great and food was great from appetizers to meals. I had seafood boil, crab bake for my sister in law, and two other dishes sea bass and seafood linguine for my husband. All great, the stuffed clams were great too. Worth the trip and wait.

Yelp
This is very hard to review being we only went for chowder. So we showed up at almost 4pm when we went to the hostess stand she asked us if we wanted to be seated inside or outside,we said outside please. The hostess was very hostile she stated you can't get lunch and just wasn't pleasant period. When we went to go sit outside all the tables we're dirty and nobody cleaning them until about 10 minutes after we awkwardly stood on the back deck. The only way I could describe the chowder was starchy like dumpling soup maybe almost like Campbell's cream soup consistency.Plenty of LBI restaurant's ,in the past I loved Kubels! Never again! I did give the two Stars because our waiter was excellent.

Drew S.

Yelp
Always a good night out at Kubel's. It's nice to be able to get added to the wait list on Yelp.

Yelp
Very local spot, and a venerable place in Barnaget Light. Me and my 17 yo popped in after mini golf on a weak beach day. Just had wings and garlic steamers. Carlos, the server, was attentive and friendly. The wings are decent and the clams fantastic. Midday parking is easy.

Chris Z.

Yelp
If I could give a zero I would have. Normally our go to place as we have a house in Barnegat Light. We tried to go for dinner, but they're making people wait an hour and the restaurant was empty, except for 2 of their employees sitting at a table. I get that they want you to have a drink or 2 at the bar, but REALLY? If you're understaffed tell people. Don't make them wait when the restaurant is empty. And the hostess was the worst we've ever encountered. And from the reviews I've read everyone feels the same. What a shame! Obviously they don't need us because there are not a lot of other options. I just feel sad because I always felt this was our place!! We left!!!!!

John S.

Yelp
Fish taco's are excellent ! I would highly recommend this menu choice . Great place to go after a day on the water fishing .

Ben H.

Yelp
BEWARE!!! Their website states they accept takeout orders until 6pm. We called at 5:40 and got through at 5:50. We were then told that they do not take To Go orders after 5:30pm (which in and of itself is ridiculous). When I pointed out the website said 6pm I was told "we do the best we can" - yikes if that's you best. Had we know we would have place the order 20 min earlier. Now I'm glad I did not give them any business. I give them a single star for actually picking up the phone.

Yelp
Very much so 3 stars. If you're starving, MAYBE some items could be 4 stars. Some items could easily also be 2 stars. It's all very average food. The inside is very cozy and comfortable - that part I liked. Seems like they have a popular bar scene - all of the seats were taken on an early, rainy Saturday afternoon. Service was fine - everyone was nice. This place really gets you with the LBI prices though...$16 for like 8 buffalo wings is pretty outrageous. They weren't even great. Sauce was kind of oddly sweet. They were fried, but skin was still a bit "gummy". I will say- I asked for all flats and they did indeed give all flats, so I appreciated that. My husband had fish and "chips" (he got sweet potato instead). He really enjoyed the fish and the sweet potato fries were basically any frozen fry you've had before. The fish looked like chicken fingers, so some would say that they are frozen fish sticks (they honestly probably are). Which like- if you're down the shore you would expect to have fresh fish for fish and chips. My husband still liked them regardless. It was all just....fine.

Ron T.

Yelp
We have been here many times and it is hit or miss. Some things are good, but most is average. My mussels this week were great. The portion was good sized and the broth was rich and buttery. The bread they served with it was a low end breadstick. Service is good and it is one of the better choices in Barnegat Light.

Yelp
Could arguably be on the LBI "Rushmore" of restaurants. A true staple with a storied past for the Historic Barnegat Light community. Most impressive to me was the Scallops. As local as you can get with a simple beurre blanc, steamed broccoli and lemon wedges. The garlic steamed clams also perfectly tender. Cheerful and attentive service capped of a wonderful family meal. As someone who was born and raised on LBI but has since moved away, it's a treat to dine at one of the best when I'm back in town.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night for dinner with a party of 6 and we were not disappointed. Started out with some coconut shrimp which were fried perfectly and the mango Chile dipping sauce they came with added a nice tangy zest. My husband ordered the wedge salad with steak on top. I ordered the shrimp and linguini. My friend ordered the country fried rib with Mac and cheese. Everything we ordered was amazing and we had a little bit to take home. Serving sizes were very reasonable for the price. Kubels has been a staple in Barnegat Light for decades and rightfully so. The menu has changed a little bit since the last time I was here, so you know the chefs are trying to change up things every now and then.
google avatar

Jarrod G.

Yelp
Our favorite place on the island to grab some food and drinks. Always a large specials menu. Went with their Mahi Mahi special and was licking the plate afterwards. Their jagerschnitzel is a staple. The free popcorn is always nice. Tends to be very busy and might have a wait during the summer months, but that's expected.

Mel L.

Yelp
The service was excellent. They did not hand out straws if you've picky with drinking out the cup. We had the green tomato crab appetizer and it was delicious. They have the typical chicken fingers for kids but these were actually good and look like real chicken. My husband had the fish and chips and he loved it. I had the fish tacos, which were really good I just did not like that they were doused in the aioli sauce. Def could have went lighter on that. We did not have desert so cannot review that. Other than the aioli issue it was a good spot to eat near the lighthouse.

Lindsay M.

Yelp
The staff is fantastic! The food is also really good. But the music in the bar is HORRIBLE. It's like Sevenfold, Linkin Park and other bad bands. The music doesn't resonate with the customers who are in their 50s and 60s (plus) nor with the staff who are in their 20s It's just bad and unrelenting and unfriendly. Just do what other beach places do and play some Yacht Rock
google avatar

Kayla G.

Yelp
Called to make reservation. Was given push back due to out of season. They did accommodate a reservation. When we arrived I went to check in and the lady was very rude. She made it seem like we were a bother. I asked her which way to direct my big party with small children and she was snippy with me Catarina "she wasn't ready for us" the food was ok but will not be going back

Melisa F.

Yelp
Hostess and staff did their best to accommodate a busy weekend. Kudos to an old school local place! See you in the off season as us locals love you!

G W.

Yelp
Don't order the clam chowder under any circumstances. It's watery, pasty not taste whatsoever and a minuscule amount of minced clams from a can. This is sad because the bay is right across the street with professional clamber willing to sell their items if you had a chef who knew how to make it. I had the $20 lobster roll which was a bit small but decent. Remember, don't order the clam chowder. Let it die on the menu and maybe they'll do something about it.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Ole reliable. Open year round and always a good meal. Great out door seating with a view of the bay.

Bruce K.

Yelp
The food is always fresh and delicious! Servers are always friendly and efficient! Location is close to the bay and deck seating affords beautiful sunsets!

Yelp
Friendly bartender with helpful suggestions on the menu. Having withdraw symptoms from the K2 still being undeveloped.

Yelp
came here for lunch today with two kids (2 and 5) and 4 adults and sat outside. it was such a great experience we had been missing kubels too and tried it out. would like to shout Jake our waiter - he picked up our table when he noticed we weren't served, was super attentive and friendly - loved the poke lettuce wraps. thanks Jake!

J S.

Yelp
We went to Kubel's for dinner last night. Sat on the brand new deck area. It was lovely and spacious. I had Scott's smoked ribs and my guest had the Crab Pie. We both enjoyed our dinners very much. We each had a martini as it is our favorite drink! Service was excellent. We were there for a good long time, but the time just flew by because we had such a good time!!
google avatar

SA L.

Yelp
Always a great meal and wonderful staff. I suggest reservations. They are building another area , can't wait

linda p.

Yelp
Our go to place for many years. It's a great family spot for always reliable, delicious fresh food. The bar is the best, especially in the quiet winter months. Grab a beer and garlic steamed clams and strike up a conversation with the locals or the Wall Street titan sitting next to you.

Lauren F.

Yelp
Food and staff great! And it's open all year. Trivia in the off season, so much fun!!!

Kim R.

Yelp
Great service with decent menu. Would stick to the clam chowder, onion rings and fish sandwich. Nice place to go when off season or in early summer.

Randy W.

Yelp
My wife and I are not the biggest Kubel's fans to begin with but we thought we would give it another shot. Our waitress was obviously new. (She couldn't open a bottle of wine - didn't know how the corkscrew worked. ) When we asked if the Salmon was gluten free or could be made gluten free, the waitress said she would ask. When she returned we were told that the kitchen "didn't know"). I tried to press her, asking how could the kitchen not know the ingredients in what they were cooking but we decided to give up and order a burger and a wedge salad with grilled chicken. While the burger and fries were good, the wedge came drenched with about 1/2 bottle of clue cheese dressing. A few pieces of dry grilled chicken came on a separate plate. We will not return for a while if ever.
google avatar

Patti I.

Yelp
Ordered fish tacos off the lunch special menu... they did not disappoint. The order came with three... each crispy fried piece of fish was nestled on a bed of slaw and topped with more veggies and a yummy sauce. The soft taco shell was extra fresh... we will be back!

Yelp
Simple dive bar located at the end of LBI near the lighthouse. food is good staff is friendly and the bar is fun

Marge B.

Yelp
We have been going to Kubel's for the last 20 years to order their scallops. They used to consistently be the best, even through Covid when places were short staffed. I don't know what has changed but last night (10/29/23) was the worst dining experience I have ever had. We arrived aroung 6 pm, just before the dinner rush. We were seated at the outside deck as it was a beautiful Indian Summer evening in October. We waited patiently for service but no one approached our table to take out order. Other parties seated after us were being taken care of but not our table. We inquired 3x before someone came to take our order. We were told no one was assigned to our table. Right away my red flag went up indicating bad management. My husband and I ordered the BARNEGAT LIGHT SEA SCALLOPS broiled with a lemon buerre blanc and topped with seasoned bread crumbs for $40 (MP). My experience in the past has been that this is simple, clean dish highlighting the scallops which had a buttery texture. HOWEVER, this night was completely opposite experience. The scallops were tough and had an ammonia taste!! And the buerre blanc was completely different than what they used to make. It was as if they completely changed the recipe!!! The tough texture of the scallops and ammonia taste was so bad we couldn't finish our $40 plates. This was so inconsistent with our past experiences here that we asked to speak to the manager whom we thought would want to know about this. We also wanted to know if they changed the recipe of this dish. The manager who came to speak to us was a young woman, nice but ineffective. When we notified her about our concerns regarding the dish, she defensively assured us the scallops were fresh and that she saw them washing the scallops on the boats at Vikiing Village that very morning. I had to explain to this young manager that it was in her best interest for the sake of the restaurant and customers to listen to our feedback and find the source of the problem. I suggested they check their purchase from Viking Village or speak to the chef because something was very different. I felt like I was coaching her on how to do her job. My husband reminded her that we paid $40 ea for a dish that we can't eat. She simply 'smiled' and assured us that the scallops were fresh and nothing has changed. Even when I explained the recipe was different, she smiled again and said the recipe is the same, nothing has changed. That was a very BAD response to customers who have eaten here over the past 20 years. Very sorry to say that we will not be coming back. Don't think they will even notice or even care as they are always very crowded. Except for a few good wait staff, the manager clearly sent the message that they do not care about the satisfaction of their customers.

Yelp
As residents of ocean county, I thought we had tried all the cozy, old school bar & grills, until we happened upon Kubels. Stopped for lunch on a cold, winter day and warmed right up. Bartenders were friendly. We ordered 2 lunch specials, fried shrimp and chicken pot pie. Both delicious and reasonably priced. The interesting decor and fire blazing sealed the deal for us and we'll definitely be back. Maybe not in the summer though...

Rob W.

Yelp
Never disappoints, these people who complain about bread not being warm are clearly Royalty. Love the restaurant and bar, been here five years running from out of the area, good stuff!!

Will M.

Yelp
Always a home town feel with great food. Prices are reasonable and you get a nice portion. Local place filled with people from all over. We like it here and continue to go back!

Ana S.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time at Kubel's in Barnegat, LBI. The ambiance was perfect! Their Beef Stroganoff, Pot Roast & Scallops were out of this world. Our server, Brandon, was very professional and made sure we had great service, a hit delicious meal, and kept checking to make sure that we didn't need anything! Kudos to this young man.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Food, drinks and service are great! Waiter Alex is terrific! Kubel's has become our "Go To" place!

Bud W.

Yelp
I had what they call New England clam chowder. It was the worst clam chowder I have ever had. It was pasty and tasteless. I don't know what's happening with this venerable eatery, but the quality seems to have slipped. I have been going there for 60 years. Maybe it should go back to the way it was in the 60s serving ham sandwiches and beer.

Yelp
*Disclaimer: this is a review of my take-out order during COVID-19* Tasting notes: Mussels fra diavolo: large meaty mussels; tomato broth not really spicy, appreciated large juicy chunks of tomato; breadstick soft to the bite with dense crumb that picked up broth really well Grouper tacos (daily special): arrived with tacos assembled with slaw and fish side by side atop flour tacos; uniformly browned exterior of the fish; excellent crunchy coating to meat ratio; fish itself was flaky and tender; slaw added tang and creaminess as well as more crunch; diced mangoes a little underripe; accompanying rice was savory and aromatic; appreciate lemon wedge Seafood tortellini (daily special): great seafood to pasta ratio; loved the big size of the shrimp and scallops; flavorful, fragrant sauce that was not too thick in consistency with chewy sundried tomatoes and crisp asparagus discs Side salad: fresh spring mix with crunchy cucumber slices and whole cherry tomatoes Other thoughts: - Order was ready 20 minutes after phone call on a Saturday evening off-season - Pick-up was easy without wait - Plastic forks provided, not wrapped - For the price of each entree, very pleased by the large portion sizes; even the side salads were larger in portion than expected - Love that there is an updated specials list every day that appears to have good variety

Nicole A.

Yelp
This was our second time at Kubel's. We loved it the first time we went last year so we decided to go back. Everything was great until we found this in our food. The waitress said she could only take off the price of the French fries (because that's where we found it). Such a shame.

Jeff B.

Yelp
K Burger is the best! Monday night dinner followed by music across the street in the summer.

Yelp
The scallops and shrimp the butter garlic sauce is amazing. Love going here for the traditional Jersey shore cuisine!

Yelp
Great food- excellent service Kubels is our go-to place to eat in barnegat light -- lobster bisque is delicious!
