The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu - Eater

"At this Japanese dessert shop, you’ll find the best strawberry roll in town — a sponge cake rolled around a whipped-cream cloud and fresh strawberries. It’s so light that one slice is barely enough — best to just get the whole roll. While La Palme D’Or may be superior for some classic sweets, Kulu Kulu offers more novel desserts. The playful “loco moco,” for example, looks just like a mini version of the iconic Hawai‘i dish, with a cream puff as the hamburger patty, caramel sauce for the gravy, and mango jelly and whipped cream shaped into a sunny-side-up egg." - Martha Cheng

Google
Great and very delicious desserts! Their strawberry shortcakes and mango mooses melt in your mouth. I also highly recommend puffs and Tokyo cakes! I come back to Kulu Kulu every time I am in Honolulu.

Maria C.

Google
Really disappointed with the matcha green tea, in the photo it was a cup with the typical green colour of matcha. The reality is a green tea bag with hot water and the tea has no taste and pale yellow colour. The match roll looks very nice but I didn't find matcha flavour on it. So try other things becuase the sweet there looks delicious

Google
They said they had no sugar or cream for coffee. Refused to give cup with ice even tho bottle water was at room temperature! Too much pigeons around the tables. Desserts were good.

Cesar M.

Google
Their desserts are absolutely amazing! The bear puff is my favorite and it’s perfect in sweetness and creamy. I really liked the texture. The presentation of the desserts are also really cute that I didn’t even want to eat them. I had to go a second time to bring some to the US mainland.

Christine K.

Google
Such a cute little bakery this is totally the spot you go to reward yourself with a little treat. My favorite part is how aesthetic all of the choices are! With that being said it’s only a four star review because I feel a few of those pastries deliver more in aesthetic than they do flavor in texture, and unfortunately, you don’t always know what you’re in for meaning the descriptions of the pastries are vague enough to be surprised. The only other downside is there are quite small desserts with a quite normal price point but again, I think you’re paying for the excitement and joy that comes with looking at a very cute dessert.

Google
We really liked the ube vanilla twist soft serve. The matcha chocolate soft serve was not as good, tasted mostly like white chocolate with a little matcha flavor—still enjoyable but wish they had a regular matcha ice cream. Ube matcha twist would be next level

Google
Not bad…. I didn’t like the Tokyo cake it was bland but the caramel sea salt was pretty good

Cassie A.

Google
We tried them out early on in our trip and knew we were going to come back for sure! We tried the Carmel cream puff first and it was a winner! Had a very nice Carmel flavor and was not too sweet. We then went back for the diamond head chocolate cream puff and it was great too! (Carmel was my favorite.) Both shells were crispy and well cooked. These cream puffs were also really big and worth every penny. Would totally recommend for a sweet treat or snack!

Yelp
Kulu Kulu is a small bakery located on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center. I noticed it when I was eating malasadas one morning and saw a small girl carrying around the cutest slice of rainbow cake. I was too full at the moment to order more food, but I returned on my last evening in Oahu to order a slice of rainbow cake for myself. It was somewhat early in the evening -- probably around 6PM or so -- so the Royal Hawaiian Center food court was getting a little busy but there were still empty tables around. The bakery itself had a few people in line so I perused the display case for other desserts. They had quite a few interesting ones: lilikoi basque cheesecake, Diamond Head puff custard, ube cake. Unfortunately, my appetite is much smaller than it once was, but the cakes looked delicious and the people in front of me all ordered their cakes ahead of time, so they are quite in demand! The cashier took my order quickly and I was able to get a slice of rainbow cake, which had fluffy cream and moist layers of colorful cake. The flavor reminded me of fruity pebbles, but without being overly sweet the way children's cereal used to be. I really liked eating it because it didn't make me feel guilty eating a dessert. I hope I can return to Kulu Kulu sometime and try their other desserts a well!

Yelp
Whatever we bought from the shop was devoured with great pleasure! So fresh! We considered bringing some home to San Diego but afraid we'd end up eating all on the plane.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a strawberry shortcake here! It was a really nice dessert to round out the night. Each cake slice had cute decorations, and thick strawberry slices in between the cake layers. Pretty standard strawberry shortcake but still, very pleasant.

Yelp
Damn! I had no idea this existed! I usually find myself at the Hobron location so I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon this. Sure it's a busy food court so the atmosphere is a bit chaotic however it still lives up to the hype. The pastries are always awesome! Sure I didn't eat everything but my family, especially my mother loves this place. A little pricey but worth it! The young lady helping me was superb! So friendly and hospitable and had just a welcoming personality that like wants you to come back to buy more! It's a 100% for me!

Yelp
I love their desserts! Although this location is tough to get to for locals since it's located at Royal Hawaiian and parking is expensive and far. Best to team up and have someone run up. Got this Christmas cake for my Birthday. And it was very good. Light and not too sweet. The whip cream in between makes it light. And the strawberry's add a nice tartness to every bite. I enjoyed the chocolate where it says Happy Birthday lol. So yummy. I recommend last minute birthday cake pickups. Hands down!

Yelp
They have two locations--one at the Royal Hawaiian Center food court and another inside Shirokiya Japan Village Walk at Ala Moana Center. Their outside seating has a great view of the area. Their Japanese cakes and cream puffs are lightly sweetened, delicious, and often shaped like fun animals. The drinks are just as tasty, and they also offer seasonal-themed cakes from the bakery. A good place to stop by while you are in the area.

Yelp
kulu kulu is a Japanese dessert shop that is part of the Royal Hawaiian's food court; they also have a location in Eaton Square. We came here to purchase a couple of cream puffs and sliced rainbow cake. The items seem more fresh at this location. Service is friendly, and there's seating at the food court area. +friendly service +located at the Royal Hawaiian's food court

Yelp
All the deserts were good but I loved the kulu kulu chocolates. Dusted in cocoa powder these were addictive. Was going to fight my wife for the last one and just decided on buying more. If you like chocolate these are a must buy!

Yelp
We wanted a sweet treat after a terrible dinner experience at Yama udon. We got the cream puff and the rainbow cake. It was delicious! The cream puff was just the right amount to sweet and creamy. The filling was filled perfectly, not too little and not too crazy. The pastry part was fresh and flaky. The rainbow cake was moist and tasty. It even looked great. The layers were small and cool looking. As you know, pastry should look good to the eye as it's part of the experience. I would not hesitate to buy these items from this bakery. I will be back again for sure!

Yelp
Kulu Kulu is located in the food court of the Royal Hawaiian Center. Before arriving to Honolulu, I made a note to check this place out since I love Japanese pastries. They offer super cute cream puffs and cakes, and I wish I could've tried more but I was so full from dinner. Sakiho assisted us with getting our choice of cakes and also helped my fiancé and his family create a memorable memory. After dinner, we decided to get a slice of tiramisu for my fiancé's dad for his birthday and Sakiho helped us light a candle and wrote happy birthday beautifully on a chocolate. I also got the cake she created which was the earl grey peach cheesecake, which was more like a sponge cake with how fluffy the cake was. The cake itself wasn't too sweet and the earl grey was nice but not too strong. I'm glad I was able to try it out, I really recommend!

Yelp
Kulu Kulu in Honolulu is a hidden gem for dessert lovers! I tried their Matcha Tropical Mousse Cake (January special), and it was incredible. The rich matcha flavor paired perfectly with the creamy tropical mousse creating a light yet indulgent treat. The texture was smooth and airy. Definitely a must-try! Video Review will be posted on Tik Tok and Instagram soon @Foxyappetite

Yelp
The review is for the Ube latte with the Ube soft serve on top. The Ube latte was not good but the Ube soft serve was decent. Overall the drink wasn't worth it and it was basically a cup of ice

Yelp
This is my first time to their Waikiki location. I've been to their Shirokiya location hundreds of times before they closed. They're located on the 2nd floor at the food court at Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Parking is located in their garage. Spend $10 and you get 3 hours free. Kulu Kulu is hands down one of my favorite bakeries on the island! Their little slices of cakes are my favorite... pricey but so good and they make me happy! The cakes are light and not heavy and not super sweet. They used to have these hello kitty shaped waffles filled with custard and other fillings back at Shirokiya and they got rid of that when that location closed. Those were also my favorite :( Don't forget to ask for a stamp card when you go. When you fill up their stamp cards, you receive $10 off!! So I actually filled up a card and will use it on my next visit :)

Yelp
Such a super cute dessert pastry spot and a gem located at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Prices are fair and probably little cheaper than Ala Moana. Kulu Kulu has many different decadent options offering milk and cream with jelly, pudding and other delicious yumminess. The most popular item by far are the light fluffy cream pastries reminiscent of bearded papa days. We ordered 4 cream pastries all different..strawberry, buttercream, chocolate and another that tasted a little like caramel. The outside pastry was light and airy...host to the real star. The cream...oh sooo good. Strawberry buttercream was sandwiched between two light shells. Cream was fluffy soft and not filling but so satisfying. The taste of the buttercream had me craving for more. We want to definitely try the drinks and other desserts in the future. Love that royal Hawaiians validates for locals! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Most AMAZING tiny dessert place ever!!! Service was amazing and always welcoming, and the environment was crazy lol, but friendly! The tiramisu was absolutely extraordinary!! The cakes are so well put together, very soft, fresh, and looks SO stunning! Yelp
Kulu Kulu is a Japanese style cake shop in Hawaii! One of the most popular cakes in Japan and a favorite pick for birthdays is The Strawberry Shortcake- Layered sponge cake with fresh strawberries and lightly sweetened whipped cream bring a taste of joy. The shop itself is small, but the service was friendly and very quick! Next time you need something sweet I would suggest giving this bakery a try!
google avatar

Yelp
5 stars for 5 star service and reliability. When I need a cup of coffee I always run upstairs to Kulu Kulu. Their coffee is the most price competitive in Waikiki. The deserts are all unique and each one deserves an award. Keep up the good work Kulu Kulu.
google avatar

Seyoung Y.

Yelp
The calamansi cheese tart was really yummy. I usually like their chocolate a lot cuz it just melts in your mouth, but wanted to try something more tangy and citrus! Their desserts are always so good!
google avatar

Allison P.

Yelp
MY ORDER: iced matcha latte (3/5) i had high expectations for this place and unfortunately, they did not meet it. their matcha is TOO sweet (taking away from the actual matcha flavor) and because they didn't have milk alternatives, i didn't have a fun time in the bathroom... WHICH IS NOT THEIR FAULT i should've done my research beforehand but i thought everyone should know. does this get's allison's approval? no.
google avatar

Dawn Y.

Yelp
If you want a Japanese bakery experience, this is a place to enjoy a coffee break and chat with a friend before continuing on in Waikiki. For kama'aina it is good to know you can validate your parking for 2 hours if you spend $10 or more....easy to do in this shopping center.

Yelp
Excellent pastry only Kulu Kulu does not disappoint...they are Japanese Pâtisserie makes their cakes and coffee jelly either cream or soft cream that I like very much! They do have soy milk too! The bakery shop is in Eaton Square., pick up is street parking only. I ordered my moms birthday strawberry shortcake that they engraved it on piece of a white chocolate block my moms birthday greetings that was perfectly made! We celebrated her birthday at Taromina Italian restaurant they kindly held my cake and chef kindly decorated with orchid flowers and mint! My whole family ate all of the cake in no time! The next day we went back again order cheesecake, rainbow cake and chocolate cake that satisfied our dessert after Lunch in our hotel room. I'll suggest all try their cake a bit petite for the price one pays but it is worth it
google avatar

Cecilia T.

Yelp
Found this place by chance while walking by! My bf and I got a slice of cake each. I had strawberry shortcake and he had some chocolate thing. It was a great slice of shortcake. He said his was "just ok" but it's because it wasn't sweet enough. This is a Japanese style bakery so if you're into not-too-sweet cake, this is your jam. Would come back!
google avatar

Michele T.

Yelp
Kiddo really likes the ube soft serve from here - strong ube flavor. She ordered the ube float the night before. She liked that one, too, but there was a lot of ice added to the drink. Hubs loves his chocolate and had been eyeing the cream puff, so he finally gave it a try. It was full of chocolate cream, but he said it needed to be a bit sweeter. As for the choux, hubs said it was too doughy for him. We also ordered a vanilla coffee. Hubs thought it was too watered down.
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
Bought a strawberry Birthday cake here. They even personalized it for me on the spot. They had candles to purchase as well. Purchased the bear and honu cream puffs. All were delicious!!
google avatar

Rochelle M.

Yelp
Super-cute Japanese bakery surprisingly located in the Royal Hawaiian food court. We came here a couple times for our nightly snack and to take some of their delicious little cakes back to our hotel. Everything we've tried so far has not disappointed. Beautiful presentations and perfectly sweet. The price point is very fair. With so many tempting menu items, I'm sure we'll be visiting a few more times during our trip.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're craving some dessert, stop by here. There are coffee based drinks and the most adorable cream puffs and cakes. I picked up a Honu Puff (matcha flavor), Hawaiian Salt Caramel Custard puff, Bear puff (chocolate flavor), and a Hello Kitty Strawberry Shortcake. I'm not the biggest fan of cream puffs but these were good! They weren't super sweet and the puff was light and crispy. The shortcake was freaking adorable with a chocolate Hello Kitty on top but the taste was ok. I've had better. Find them in the food court on the second floor of the Royal Hawaiian Center near Raising Cane's.
google avatar

Debra W.

Yelp
I ordered a cake from here for a small wedding party, the cake was absolutely delicious and fresh, I would definitely buy from there again.

Jhobell J.

Yelp
It's in the food court on the second floor and not busy at all. I was looking for something warm to drink while exploring around the outdoor mall. The girl made the temperature of my drink so hot that when I started walking away the cap came off and I burnt my hand. I wanted to go back and request for another but I was too far by then. If you're gonna order something, order cold not hot drinks.
google avatar

Aron N.

Yelp
Kulu kulu home of the awesome custard filled pastries. They used to be in the old Shirokiya where you could find all sorts of incredible custard filled pastries. They were fresh and huge! Stuffed with custard. The one you get now is not as tall, tastes like a day old or two. Smaller but still evokes the memory of what it used to be like. It's still good but we remember how it was in the past.
google avatar

Tonya C.

Yelp
Wonderful staff & amazing desserts. Each piece looked like a perfect piece of artwork. Definitely a must stop while in Honolulu. I can't wait to come again.
google avatar

Allix C.

Yelp
It happens that this is one of those hidden gems, and their selection of dishes is both inspired and well crafted with carefully considered ingredients. If you get the coffee jelly, get it without ice :)

Michie N.

Yelp
The matchi cake and cream puff both are delicious! Not too sweet and the matchi cake really does taste like matchi!!
google avatar

Christine N.

Yelp
This has become a must stop place for me whenever I am in Waikiki. I absolutely love their coffee jelly drink! I would go with the recommended milk, I believe it's whole milk. The coffee jelly just has a strong coffee flavor so it balances well. They are cute little desserts here, too, very beautiful. I have not tried any of them, but I do see a lot of people grab dessert as take out.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Kulu Kulu was on my radar during my travel to Honolulu because of Instagram posts that I saw on my feed. It seems that they have some specials every month. In May, they had strawberry specials. I tried the matcha strawberry monte blanc from the monthly special menu and the Kona coffee tiramisu. The Kona Coffee tiramisu was my favorite out the two. While the coffee wasn't too strong, the cream and the cake were very light. The cream on the matcha strawberry monte blanc was stiff. The flavors were also muted, that I couldn't really tell if I was eating matcha or strawberry. The bakery is conveniently located, and every item that they have is very cute and Instagramable. However, I don't think the taste was on par with the looks.

Yelp
Located in Royal hwn center, 2nd floor, food court. Below Restaurant Suntory and Tsuru ton tan. Great selection of cake slices. Reasonable prices. Kamaaina and military free 3 hours parking currently offered at Royal hwn center. Purchase $10. Bring receipt and local ID or military ID to 1st floor office near center stage. Yelp
We wanted rainbow cake for our wedding and Kulukulu's was the best we could find on island, whip cream frosting, apart from looking amazing it also tasted amazing! We shopped around and priced this type of cake at MANY cake shops / bakeries on island and not only was Kulukulu the most affordable but they were also the friendliest to work with and the best tasting when we did taste tests. 100% will use them again for any cake needs.

Yelp
Food: nice but is a little bit too sweat (personal opinions) service: the service is excellent price is affordable, cake taste good, highly recommend!!! note: for some special cake, u better order earlier (like 1-2 week earlier)

Yelp
Kulu Kulu in Waikiki is one of my go to places to have a simple treat. If you're a lover of food art, like me, you will find their selection of chocolate puffs resembling bears or eclairs shaped as bunnies fascinating :) The confections are not overly sweet. You can pair your treats with iced or hot coffee and teas. It does not disappoint :) The staff is very kind. Definitely go here if you get the chance! I like to work up an appetite by walking from my place to Kulu Kulu, and then walk back after. Win win situation haha!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, really enjoyed :) parking a little hectic Nice customer service. If in the area will visit again.

Yelp
Picked up some fresh cakes here for bday. They can only attach a small sign for happy birthday and absolutely cannot add a name to it. :( nevertheless the cakes are good and we appreciate the authenticity from Japanese pastry chefs.
google avatar

Yelp
My friend got my birthday cake from kulu kulu and it was amazing! She got the strawberry shortcake Hello Kitty cake and ordered in advance. It was so fresh and not too sweet. What a cute birthday cake.

Monica F.

Yelp
I finished my pineapple juice and ice cream, and there's still a big glass of ice. I think I didn't tasted what was the flavor of the pineapple juice To all visitors to before you order let them make easy ice
google avatar

Jada W.

Yelp
This is a great place for a quick dessert. The soft serve is very tasty and the coffee jelly is light. The other pastries they offer are cute too. It's in the food court of the mall so there's lots of seating. The ladies serving the deserts were kind and fast.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely wanted to check out the dessert scene while I was in Hawaii. Scoured Yelp for some dessert places that were nearby our hotel and came across Kulu Kulu. Had some pretty high expectations for Kulu Kulu's dessert after seeing the high ratings from other Yelpers - and after looking through the photos of the cakes and pastries. This dessert shop is located in the food court inside of Waikiki Royal Hawaiian Center on the second floor. We stopped by on a weekend evening and there was still a good number of desserts left. I was torn between several desserts and ended up ordering two - Mont Blanc (about $5-6) that seemed to have just come out from the back and the Vanilla Mille Crepe ($5.95). The cakes both looked really yummy, but unfortunately that was the only positive about them - the Mont Blanc was super dry and tasted like it was a few days old. There was no chestnut taste at all - basically seemed like leftover supermarket chocolate cake. And the Vanilla Mille Crepe - I was expecting the crepe cake to be light and pillowy, but the crepe layers were super thick and chewy while the vanilla was incredibly heavy. Each bite was super cloyingly sweet and heavy. Not what I had expected at all. I ended up pulling my friends into ordering cakes as well. And theirs didn't fare much better. We tried the Honu puff (matcha custard cream inside the cream puff that looked like a turtle) for $4.50. The cream puff shell was incredibly hard and tough to break through - super dry so we basically just ate the matcha cream inside. Tried the POG cake ($5.75) since the flavors seemed to be intriguing and unique to Hawaii - cake with passion, orange, and guava layers. Sadly a mistake to order this dessert - no flavor in any of the different slices. Everything tasted the same and the overall cake was dry. The cream on top and between the layers did not taste any better. The only redeeming dessert of the night was the papaya mango eclair ($4.95). While the eclair itself was hard and dry, the filling was really tasty. No papaya taste, but the mango chunks were really fresh - this dessert really made us regret going with the POG as we should have gone with the papaya mango mousse cake instead! And one of us got a drink as well. She said it tasted pretty good, but nothing special. tl;dr - Not sure if we came on an off night or our expectations are just super high, but these desserts missed the mark completely. Would not return again and would not recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely scrumptious! MATCHA HONU PUFF was the exact late night dessert I needed. . Located at the bustling food court on the 2nd floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. . Big mahalo to the cashier for her wonderful assistance. I had a card issue but she was able to figure it out smoothly.

Leticia P.

Yelp
Cake was so delicious! The service was amazing. The place looks great and inviting for the whole family.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Located in the food court area of Royal Hawaiian Shopping center. They offer many things like coffee, tea, softserve, parfaits and other dessert treats. I got the Chocolate which comes in 6 cubes. A bit pricy at $5 but they are so soft and tender and melt in your mouth delicious. Its like a cube of ganache. When you get them they are chilled a little from being in the case, i suggest you wait a few minuets for them to come to room temperature so that they become more melty. The most amazing chocolate, you wont be disappointed. It looks like they also come in the double chocolate soft serve cone too (#24) for only $1 more, im not sure if you still get the same amount of chocolate but that would be a great bargain if it did. Thats what i'll get next time, possibly with kona coffee soft serve if thats allowed.
google avatar

Yelp
Kulu Kulu is located on the second floor at the Royal Hawaiian center of the food court. We stopped by last year for ice cream and cakes and we had to revisit. They offer a variety of rolled cakes such as matcha and Kona coffee cakes. They also have refreshing drinks and ice cream. My order was the matcha chocolate ice cream. It is soft serve vanilla ice cream with matcha swirls. The inside of the cone was lined with matcha and at the very tip end of the cone was matcha. It was matcha galore. I've never had matcha chocolate that was so soft but didn't melt. The exterior of the chocolate was real matcha powder. Ice cream does melt quickly! We also got the matcha rolled cakes that was light, soft and fluffy. The matcha didn't come through as much with the cake but still good nonetheless. I saw that they had ube ice cream as soft serve but it wasn't available at the time we were there. We came close to closing time and they still had a case full of fresh cakes which likely was restocked everytime. Highly recommend if looking for dessert or ice cream!
