Kumo Will Bring Trendy Japanese Sandwiches to Mira Mesa - Eater San Diego

"Kumo is a new shop scheduled to open by July in Mira Mesa, specializing in Japanese-style sandwiches known as sandos. The shop will occupy a 540-square-foot space and will be geared towards takeout service. Co-founders Messiah Williams, Jeyme Araki, and Victor Ly will offer a menu featuring a variety of traditional Japanese fillings such as egg salad, chicken katsu, menchi katsu, and a sweet combination of fruit and whipped cream. Specialty beverages, including sparkling drinks made with fresh fruit puree and matcha, will also be available, alongside plans for limited edition seasonal sandwiches and other small side dishes." - Candice Woo

Google
We tried the Fruit Sando! It was very good- and very generous on the cream. Fruit tasted fresh and bread was okay. Display was nice as well. Next time I’ll have to try some of their savory options but all and all a very easy and pleasing experience. $11 was a little steep and maybe around $8 i’d come more often and they could consider catering at that price. But still good stuff! Thank you

Arlene Romana

Google
We tried: Pork katsu Sammy - the best Chicken katsu Sammy - second best Egg salad Sammy - too sweet Fruit and cream strawberry - very good 😊 They made the orders fresh. Took it to go and it was very delicious even with the travel home.

Google
Solidly okay, but only okay. We went on a pretty quiet Saturday and they were out of every item I tried to order (including an item I paid for and they came out later to tell me they could substitute it with something else). The wait for food was pretty long but there were only a few staff there handling everything. Everyone we talked to was nice enough. There's no seating inside, which is fine because the plaza outside is really nice and we enjoyed eating out there by the fountain. The food itself was alright but nothing great. The potato salad, egg salad, and katsu sandwiches were really bland, which was unfortunate because Japanese potato salad is great at most restaurants I've been to here. Takoyaki was okay. The kani salad was decent and my fiancé thought it was good. The combo pricing didn't feel too steep but overall with the lack of flavour you can probably just enjoy making your own at home for less. We paid $55 for 2 katsu sandwich combos, a takoyaki (which was supposed to be squid karaage), and a fruit sando.

Google
Overall they got really solid food. Their Takoyaki is a good pick me up for extra food if I bring lunch and am still hungry 🙌🙌 just wished they still kept their curry sauce on the menu cause that was a huge motivator for me to buy their sandwiches. Would totally appreciate the return of the sauce or at least sharing the recipe for it if they’re going to opt to have it permanently removed.

@kumo_sd Loved the egg salad sandwich from Kumo in Mira Mesa! Really pretty food court to sit in. Friendly staff and the sandwich came out quickly. Definitely recommend!

Google
Delicious sandwiches! No inside seating but plenty of outside seating right outside the restaurant. We ordered the half egg salad and half fruit and cream. We really enjoyed it. Staff was very helpful in helping us decide what to get. We will definitely return

Google
I really enjoyed the katsu sando and would definitely come back again. Despite mixed reviews, I thought the it was fried well and the pork was thick, soft, and juicy. Note: the green Thai tea is oolong based, so if you’re expecting the traditional black Thai tea flavor, don’t get it. The service was also very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Thank you!

Google
I only ordered The chicken katsu sandwich is very good. 10/10 solid and unique taste 8/10 price, a bit expensive for the portion sizes compared to nearby restaurants. I would go again. When I'm not starvinglt hungry because the flavor is very good.

Yelp
Kumo is one of those restaurants I always revisit because it hits the spot for a certain craving. And I love the combos- the egg salad is really good (and less salty than it used to be). The shrimp katsu sando is perfect for a lighter flavor that still has solid pieces of shrimp and the tartar sauce and cabbage complement the golden katsu well. Apparently on this day the chicken katsu had sold out before noon - I also recommend it. The menchi katsu sando has pork and beef, so it's actually quite hamburger tasting, with a stronger American or seasoned patty flavor. Not my type since I generally don't like Italian sausage type seasoning flavor, and one half of the katsu was more tough and chewy than the other. Still nicely crispy. Potato salad didn't taste like you'd expect. Kani salad is nice. The green Thai tea is good, my friend who is a barista loved it alot. Since we got takeout, I added a little milk and honey to my unsweetened green tea and the floral around became even more delicious without bitterness. Great tea. Until next time, Kumo! I will be back. If you dine here be prepared for takeout style and outdoor plaza seating.

Yelp
This review is purely for taste. Got take out of the chicken katsu sandwich and shrimp katsu sandwich and chicken karaage. The texture of the fried chicken is absolutely phenomenal. The karaage, the chicken katsu was wonderful. Good flavor and breading was crispy even on a takeout order. The shrimp katsu was good. Egg salad and their kani salad was good. I would come back for their fried chicken. Everything else is a solid 4 star but the texture and flavor of that chicken katsu sandwich is a 5/5.

Yelp
I tried 4 different sandwiches! The best one was strawberry creme. The creme was light and sweet and melded perfectly with the sweet strawberries and milk bread. Next was the chicken katsu sandwich! The meat was juicy and the sauce was good. Then was the shrimp katsu sandwich as I have never tried anything like it. Lastly was the pork katsu sandwich was a bit dry for my liking. I also tried the green thai tea as well, which personally I did not enjoy as it had no flavor. Might have been because I got less sweetness. I would come back again for the sweet dessert sandwiches if I am craving!

Yelp
Simple. I like the shrimp sandwich a lot. The egg salad is good. It's light. kumo sandwich

Yelp
I was so excited to try this and I'm so disappointed. I ordered the veggie katsu combo with potato salad, green Thai tea and the strawberry crème sandwich. The potato salad had ZERO flavor. Even salt didn't help. The veggie katsu tasted odd. The sauce was pretty decent though. The green Thai tea had no flavor. The only thing that was ok was the strawberry crème sandwich. The staff was sweet. I won't be back :(

Yelp
I tried Kumo for the first time today and it was very delicious. It's definitely a hole in the wall kind of vibe. I got the pork Katsu and the strawberry cream sandwiches. The Katsu sandwich was very savory and cooked to perfection. There was just the right amount of sauce and the Katsu was very crispy which went well with the bread. They also added a little bit of shredded cabbage for extra crunch and all the flavors came together very nicely. The strawberry and cream sandwich was a good way to end the meal. The whipped cream was very light and not too sweet. I love how the bread, cream, and strawberries complemented each other. The only thing is that it took a while to make the sandwiches, but it's understandable because you have to take some time to make it look nice and pretty ! so if you are going to have a big order, you might wait for a while. I highly recommend that you eat there. There are some tables outside in a small plaza where you can eat it. I feel like if you have to take the sandwiches home, they might get a little bit soggy due to the sauce so maybe you could ask for sauce on the side, especially for the savory sandwiches. I will be back for more!!

Yelp
I'm so surprised this isn't rated higher! We got the chicken katsu, egg salad, and strawberries and cream sandos and everything was absolute perfection. This spot is in a little food court area with cute tables with umbrellas. We came on a Saturday around 2pm and it wasn't too busy in the table area (but the shop was hoppin). The sandos took a bit to come out but no worries because it was a nice spot to sit and chat and I loved how fresh they were. The chicken katsu sando was juicy, tender, tangy, and so delicious. The egg salad sando was also so flavorful and delicious. My favorite thing was the strawberries and cream sando -- the fresh whipped cream was heavy and thick, and there were strawberries in every bite. It almost tasted like a not-too-sweet strawberry shortcake. Everything is on this incredible cloud-like milk bread that's just slightly sweet. I'm obsessed. It was expensive -- $62 for all this before tip -- but that's San Diego. It was worth it to me. We'll definitely be back to try everything and have more relaxing afternoons here.

Yelp
I CANNOT stop thinking about Kumo!!! I don't even know what to say except JUST GO! Can't wait to go back and try each and every item on the menu! Here's what we had: Strawberries & Cream Egg Salad Sando Menchi Katsu Chicken Katsu Green Tea Friendly counter service. Worth the wait, no matter short or long. The leftovers were even amazing the next day! Now I'm hungry again...

Yelp
I love this place! I have been coming here multiple times since September and their sandwiches never disappoint. If you're new here and you want to try something delicious, I recommend: - Green Thai Tea drink (in the photo) - Cold Sampler Combo (in the photo) - Chicken Katsu Sando - Egg Sando - Fruit & Cream Sando - Strawberry & Cream Sando It's a small shop, so once you take your order, you will be expected to wait outside. One of the wonderful staff will walk over to you to deliver your order. There are tables right outside for you to sit on and wait. We once ordered 5 sandos but only received 4 sandos. I reached out to their Instagram DM (follow them @kumo_sd), and the owner, Messiah, responded very quickly. He was very kind and provided the best customer service to help fix the issue. He was willing to give me a refund or have his staff make us a fresh new order of the sando we were originally missing. In addition, he added 2 extra sandos for FREE to compensate for the inconvenience. I thought that was the sweetest and I was already obsessed with the sandos so of course, I accepted the offer with thankfulness. I was able to pick up the sandos on a day that worked perfect for me. The sandos are great for lunch at work or something to pick up on the way home. They do delivery through doordash or you can easily order online and pick them up at the store to beat the traffic. 10/10 recommend. Thank you so much, Messiah, and all of the Kumo staff for always keeping my belly happy.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant with a friend for a casual lunch over the weekend! There was no wait, and the workers were really friendly. I ordered the Shrimp Katsu Combo with Kani Salad and Egg Salad as my sides. It was really tasty, but the sandwiches themselves were really small - they were pretty generous with the sides though. For a total of $16.50 before tax, I felt that it was a little pricey for the portion sizes. However, this menu is really unique and definitely worth a try still! I will be back to try their fruit sandwiches :) As a side note: be prepared to takeout or eat outside since they don't have indoor seating.

Yelp
A nice little location, parking at times may be bad, I rode my bike and we able to pull right up. I ordered the egg salad sandwich and the chicken katsu for my girlfriend and a side of potato salad. I've never had a true Japanese Sando but have been told these are close. The chicken had a good size piece of chicken. The egg salad also had a good size scoop of egg salad. Both were very good. The egg to mayo ratio was perfect. Just the right amount of salt and pepper. For the size, they are actually pretty filling. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try this place for a long time and I finally have. The space is really small but perfect for grab and go. I got the exit sanwhich and black tea! both were amazing. The staff are really nice and my food was ready quickly! The bread was so soft and the cream wasn't runny and also wasn't too sweet. The fruit was fresh and the black tea was perfect.

Yelp
I couldn't wait to try this place, This is a new start up place so have patience! The food was absolutely amazing, so fresh and delicious. I got the shrimp sandwich and the 1/2 egg and fresh fruit with a green tea. The wonderful nice ladies working there were so nice and made good suggestions! The place is starting up so there slowly making better menus but the place is still very clean,

Yelp
Stopped by for a weekday lunch and it's a great takeout spot. You can also sit outside if you want because there's a lot of tables in the plaza. Shrimp Katsu - the shrimp was juicy along with the inside and crispy on the outside. I loved the sauce but there wasn't much. The bread was a bit dry so with the lack of sauce, it just felt really dry. Pork Katsu - pork was crispy and the inside was not as tender as I expected. Again there wasn't a lot of sauce so with the dry bread, it felt really dry.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try out Kumo for quite a while now after seeing Instagram reels of their fruit sandos. I am so glad I finally got the opportunity to do so. Starting off with the shop itself, Kumo is not like a typical restaurant or cafe in that there is essentially no seating available inside of the shop. Instead, there are tables right outside that I believe are shared between Kumo and the other restaurants of the plaza. Therefore, I did not have a problem with the seating situation at Kumo. Onto the food, itself... My goodness. First, I did not know that they had savory sandwich options. I initially believed that they only sold the viral Japanese fruit sandwiches. When we saw the katsu option on the menu, we just had to try it out. We ordered the fruit & cream (original) sandwich as well as the katsu combo, which comes with the sandwich, salad, and milk tea. Both sandwiches exceeded my expectations. Three words to describe the fruit & cream sandwich: light, sweet, and fruity. The cream just paired so well with the soft bread and fruits. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the fruits were not at all sour. The katsu sandwich is indescribable. I am a huge fan of katsu, but I never imagined the possibility of consuming it in sandwich form. At first I was a bit wary, but after my first bite, I was extremely excited for more. The contrast between the crispy and crunchy katsu with the soft white bread did wonders. I was not a huge fan of the salad, but the sandwich was well worth it. Overall, I would definitely recommend Kumo to friends visiting the San Diego area. The sandwiches are a bit on the pricier side (especially the fruit sandwich), but it is worth it to try it at least once.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed Kumo's sandwiches. Got the chicken katsu, egg salad, and strawberry. Egg salad sando was our favorite, very flavorful and reminiscent of those from Japan. Katsu was well cooked and crispy, strawberry full of cream (though wish there was more strawberry!).

Yelp
Kumo... is "okay." The price points are very high for this small shop. They just have a storefront, no seating available in the store, but plenty of seating in the area. We ordered three sandos: Pork Katsu [$13], Egg [$10] & Strawberry & Cream [$11]. Pork Katsu- it wasn't as soft, kind of still tough so it may needed more time in the fryer 3/5 Egg Sando- very nostalgic of what my mom used to make for snack so I'd give it a good 4.5/5 Strawberry & Cream- star of the show. Strawberries were good & the cream was great, but the price point is wayyy too high on it 5/5 (food wise) We were greeted upon entry & was already told they did not have chicken katsu or the shrimp sando but they had just opened about an hour-ish prior? We originally wanted the chicken sando, but settled for pork. The service was pretty slow, I guess cause they actually had to prepare everything. The bread was a little harder than expected for white plain bread. Good try, Kumo!

Yelp
I stopped by Kumo today because I am missing Japanese 711 sandwiches SO much! I was so excited to find a sando shop in Mira Mesa! Kumo is tucked away in a shopping center at the Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley part of San Diego. It's in the corner and you might miss it if you're not familiar with the location. I went during "happy hour" specifically for an egg salad sandwich. There were solid sando choices! I ordered right away and got my sando and oolong tea quickly. It was delicious! Not 100% like the Japan 711 sandwich but pretty darn close. The egg salad is a little denser and I think they use a kind of sourdough white bread instead of true white bread. I will definitely be back to try the other sando!! My reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the price, I'd give it a 4.5 if I could. It's a bit expensive for a smaller sandwich but happy hour prices help.
google avatar

Helen D.

Yelp
I came in during their week day happy hour special which is between 2-5pm and their sandos are reduced prices. I went for the egg salad sando which I loved! It there was so much filling which makes it all worth it of course and the seasoning was on point. It was the perfect balance between slighly salty and sweet from the milk bread. I grew up eating egg salad sandwiches and this one definitely hit the spot. Im excited to try other sandos next time! The staff was very sweet and communicative when they were not able to serve me right away but after my order was taken, it did not take long for them to put it together. There are no seats here, but there are outdoor tables for the "food court" they have at the plaza so you can still enjoy your food there.
google avatar

Jacquie R.

Yelp
I've been twice to this location and it was so delicious each time. The bread was soft and the chicken is nice and crunchy. The option of picking two side salads is something I appreciated as I love good variety in a meal. The price was also very reasonable. I can't wait to go back again! The only thing I would change about this dish is having a lighter amount of katsu sauce, as it can make the bread too soggy sometimes.
google avatar

Corinna W.

Yelp
We tried the karaage chicken and the chicken katsu sando. They were crispy and juicy. It happened to be happy hour from 2-5pm when we arrived so the items we ordered were $2 off. $6 for the karaage chicken was a great deal! They gave a generous portion! The chicken katsu sando was $11. I'd love to try the egg salad and the fruit sando next time! It's a tiny place to

Yelp
Kumo has been on my list for a while that I want to try because they serve traditional Japanese style sandwich. Finally one day I was in the area and felt like giving it a try. I was surprised that it's located in a "food court" that's inside a large shopping plaza in Mira Mesa. The store is to go only, but there are many tables outside to sit down and enjoy the sandwich. I tried their classic Chicken Katsu Combo with Green Tea. I was really surprised by the large portions with two scopes of side salads. The chicken kutsu sandwich was pretty good. Definitely have that authentic vibe. I loved that everything is freshly made. The sides were pretty good too. I had their Kani and potato salads. Honestly, I enjoyed the sandwich. This may not be everyday go to place, but definitely on my mind if I crave some classic Japanese sandwich.
google avatar

heidi s.

Yelp
I love Katsu sandwiches, so these were nice. I just wish the bread was of better quality because it sogged up pretty fast My strawberry sando was so cute & tasted noice Would come here again, i can't speak on the ambiance since there are only public tables outside the establishment Service was ok!
google avatar

Amma C.

Yelp
Around the corner and behind the other eateries, you'll find Kumo, a Japanese sandwich shop in a food court located in Sorrento Valley. Kumo specializes in Japanese sando and follows the technique in its simplicity, ingredients and overall presentation. I ordered the Menchi katsu combo which came with a choice of two sides (egg salad and potato salad). The portions were large enough to share and the drink options were tea variations of green, black, oolong tea, etc. The staff was courteous and I appreciated our food being delivered to us at our table outside. It's important to note that Kumo is an order at the counter type restaurant and there are dining tables outside. Something to keep in mind weather-wise.
google avatar

Blanche Y.

Yelp
The service was pretty quick. I thought that the sando was decent, strawberries were sweet. Thought that the bread could be softer and the cream could be fresher given the price paid. May come back again in the future to try the katsu sando.
google avatar

Shane C.

Yelp
Been here a couple times now but this is probably the last time unless something changes. I feel like the flavor profiles are there but the execution and price point is way off. Shrimp katsu sandwich -there is barely any shrimp in the shrimp cutlet. It was like 20% shrimp, rest was some kind of filler. It was extremely unsatisfying.. i tasted more bread, more slaw and tartare sauce than shrimp. When i did get a taste of the shrimp, i kept thinking why they didnt make the entire cutlet out of shrimp? it would have been so much better and worth the increased cost compared to the other sandwiches. -the bread: this is hard to judge but it feels more dry rather than a quality japanese bread thats soft but holds its shape. It blurs the lines of staleness a bit. Chicken katsu sandwich: flavor profiles are good, chicken cook was good, but lacking seasoning/salt on the katsu Strawberry fruit sandwich - the strawberries and cream are delicious but the bread is not matching at all. I would much prefer this if it was made out of 85 degrees milk toast but sliced a bit thicker.
google avatar

Lucy P.

Yelp
One star because the whipped cream was delish. But other than that.. this doesn't compare to an authentic Japanese Sando. I went to Japan a few months ago so this was a little bit of a disappointment. The price too:/ SO EXPENSIVE! Almost 12$ for this? Yikes. I drove 40 min to get here too! The presentation is not like a sando.. hardly had any fruit.. a sando should have whole strawberries and whole kiwis and this just had little pieces (hence the picture) I basically had an overpriced whipped cream sandwich. I'm sad, because I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Calina N.

Yelp
There are plenty of sandwich places in sorrento valley but have you ever had a Japanese sandwich? They aren't as heavy as your typical American sub and make a great lunch. Other yelpers seem to agree that the price point of the food here is a little high. I bought 2 sandwiches one of them being a combo and paid $28 total. I know with the crazy times of inflation it's been hard for businesses but it's hard for customers too especially when certain ingredients like egg, bread, and chicken are on the relatively cheaper side. Under $10 seems like a more reasonable price for sandwiches to me but once I start seeing double digits I am hesitant and honestly the main reason why like the other reviews, won't go out of my way for these sandwiches. Don't get me wrong. The sandwiches were good. Chicken was cooked perfectly. But you can get pretty decent katsu sandwiches at a Japanese Market for cheaper. I know a lot of people love Japanese curry so I'm wondering if that is something they would be willing to incorporate in their menu to draw more people in? (Curry katsu sandwich?) The potato salad was not my favorite, I felt like it was too chunky and not enough seasoning (salt). However, the Kani salad was quite good.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
This place is... okay. Yes, the sandos are cutely packed. But there's nothing that really impressed me and the price point is crazy high for what you actually get. I got the cold sampler which is 1 cold egg salad sando and 1 fruit and cream sando. Eating these things were very messy. I enjoyed the matcha tea though.
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Kumo is tucked into the food court here and not very visible until you walk over. I had the chicken katsu sando and my partner had the shrimp katsu sando. It took about 10-15 mins for the sandos to come out, which seemed a bit long since we were the only ones waiting. They apologized for the wait however. The price point of the sandos are a bit high for the amount of food you get. I feel like they should probably be $10 or less. I really loved the chicken katsu sando. It's probably the best chicken katsu sando I have tried. It was crisped perfectly and the sauce was delicious. My partner thought his sando was just ok. I think I probably won't go out of my way to come here, but I would gladly come again if I was in the area. The price point is probably the biggest deterrent. The staff is very friendly!
google avatar

Chrystal W.

Yelp
Came across this sando place on instagram and thought its a cute little place to try out. The store open at 11 and I went there at 11 but they are out of the cream sandwiches and the shrimp katsu sandwich. I was a little disappointed because me and my friends went there mainly for the strawberry cream sandwich. Besides that, staff was being super rude and was giving us attitude for no reason. I chose the egg sandwich but it was mid, the egg was lack of flavor and the soft boiled egg was a little overcooked. I'll say if you have never had Japanese sandwiches before then you could give it a try but if you've had it elsewhere before then you can skip this place.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Japanese sandos just hit (no I refuse to use that other term) especially if you're looking for some spark or memory of sandos from the konbini. The only downfall of this small cafe's business model is that -- 1. Not many people are willing to pay more than $10 ($13 to be precise) for a sando -- and -- 2. Making the ingredients fresh does lead to long wait times which people ain't patient enough to wait for since they not on vacation (hypocritical or what?). Which is why I go on an off hour at 2pm on a Friday most days. Their Pork Cutlet Sando for $13 is uh-mazing! Just look at that cross section (skanky)! 2 giant pieces of succulent pork fried to perfection accompanied by crunchy shredded cabbage between fluffy white bread. The sando has delivered every single time. I think maybe too much of the katsu sauce which gives one more motivation to consume the sando while as fresh as possible, so that the crunch does not get drowned by the sauce. Follow this method -- going on off hour and inhaling immediately -- to ensure the ultimate satisfaction with your meal and experience at this cafe!

Sir pls put yer gun away

Yelp
I was so upset! 49$ for 4 sandwiches!? I would understand if the sandwiches were FILLED with fruit but they half assed the kiwi and I assume the orange. LIKE, if you see what's on the surface with the kiwi and the orange it is literally ALL YOU GET! There's none on the bottom! There were two big grapes that were okay. The cream is very good.....it taste good I won't lie unfortunately...really does hit nicely...The sandwiches with the small kiwi and orange is what they give you in the store, but on their instagram page they show you this! (The photos with bigger kiwi). And it is messy to eat. Not very bite sized but I suppose that's part of the fun. I'd only eat here once in the while for the cream sandwiches ! As for service, the girls are nice and cool. A quick in and out.

Yelp
The Chicken Katsu sandwich was totally bussin vibes!! Full of flavor, great amount of chicken, and amazing texture. The service was very fast too. It took about 2-3 minutes for two sandwiches.

Yelp
Kumo is a popular new vendor that opened recently in The Food Court at Plaza Sorrento in Mira Mesa. The operating hours were from noon to 6 pm on Tuesday through Sunday, but that may have changed to 11 am to 5 pm according to their ordering website. On my first visit, I left empty handed because all of the inventory for the day was sold out. For my second try, I showed up right at the opening time, only to find a dozen people already lined up. They were permitting just one set of customers to enter the suite at a time so that caused the line to stretch across the common outdoor patio dining area. It took close to half an hour to reach the service counter. The menu featured four Japanese-style sandos, one combo, and four flavors of classic or milk tea for drinks. The two sauces, original katsu and pickled red ginger, were provided with each sando order. After reading feedback about the Fruit & Cream, I decided to stick with a savory sando and bought a Menchi Katsu. Ground beef and pork along with napa cabbage was the filling inside the Japanese milk bread (shokupan). After waiting outside for my food to be prepared, the takeout bag was ready in about ten minutes. The sauces made a difference by adding zing to the sando. The crust on the meat patty was not very crispy. The biggest problem as noted by others was the small portion size for $13. Even with the quality ingredients, I don't feel the price point should have exceeded $10. I gave a three star rating for my experience at Kumo.

Yelp
I heard how long the lines were when they first opened and luckily, we didn't experience that during our visit. Kumo has a very limited menu, serving only 4 different types of sandwiches. I think they close once they sell out so come right when they open to have the best options. Because of how small the space is, they only allow one party inside at a time, and it's best that only one person from you go inside as well. After you order, you wait outside until they call your name. Sandwiches come out pretty fast and there's plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas around the plaza. Each sandwich comes cut in half and no crust. Between Chicken Katsu and Menchi Katsu, I preferred the chicken because of the kind of overpowering pickled radish taste from the Menchi. Both meats were juicy though and the sauce barely was beginning to soak through the bread. Might not hold its form if you eat it later though. I liked the Egg Salad but you kind of get tired of it after a couple of bites. There's no differing textures in each bite, just soft bread and soft egg salad. When we got the Fruit and Cream, there were tangerines, strawberries, kiwis, and green grapes. The sweet cream was overflowing with every bite and since I'm someone who always scrapes off the cream from cakes, this was a lot for me. The sandwiches are a lot more filling than it looks and it's good but kind of expensive for what it is. Like $12 for an egg salad sandwich is kind of crazy but there's a lot of hype in these types of sandwiches. Do yourself a favor and give it a try though!

Yelp
The combo is a big portion! I got a pork cutlet hot sando, 50% sweet green tea, kani salad, and potato salad. My total was around $17. I was way too full! I do wish they had herbal tea options. The store is cute, and the menu is pretty big. It would've been cool if they had a tofu or vegetarian sando but maybe I missed it. I like that they make the sandos to order. I came for dinner and was worried it would just be sandos that had been sitting out all day, but it's not! Service was good, two nice employees, and plenty of parking. Gas station nearby too.

Yelp
Having been to Japan, I've definitely craved and missed these kinds of sandwiches. I was so excited to see them available here in San Diego!! Kumo opened in the Aldi shopping center in Sorrento Valley last month and the lines have been crazy!! It's a small little to-go only shop. Opening day people mentioned they were waiting for 2+ hours. We instead went the next day 15 mins before opening to get in line. While the sandwiches are good, for the price and size of your food, it definitely isn't value. My favorite was the egg salad and my least favorite was the fruit cream. The cream used in the fruit cream sandwich is really heavy when the fruit sando style in Japan that this was inspired by is very light and refreshing (more like a whip cream vs kumo's thick frosting). The Katsu and the Menchi sandwiches, while nice and fresh, really needed a sauce because flavor wise it was kind of bland. Overall, if you just want a small snack then these sandwiches can hit the spot, but can cost you if you're looking to actually get full.

Yelp
The earl grey is a no go for me. I bought it so I drank it...didn't want to waste it. It just wasn't tasty enough for me. It almost tasted water down. Probably was. Not sure where the hype is about that. Katsu sandwich was good...almost close to how I remember buying it at the 7-11 in Japan. The fruit one was delicious. Not the easiest things to eat. At least eating it and trying to be clean about it. You take a bite from any end it's busting at the seams on the opposite end. Took a bite and the banana staring slipping out...try to save the banana and then the mango is next to slip out. Cream is really good. Hours are not so convenient but we got there right before closing. I will be back to try the egg sando! Big parking lot and next to other food choices. Same parking lot as Aldi.

Yelp
Kumo keeps it simple, and that's what makes it so good. Their fruit & cream sando is light, fresh, and just the right amount of sweet--definitely one of the best I've had. The pork katsu sando is crispy, juicy, and well-balanced. My favorite katsu sando is from Ee Nami Tonkatsu Izakaya, but Kumo's is a solid runner-up! If you're craving a quality sando, this is the place to go.

Yelp
We love Japanese Sando's but for some reason this just didn't hit the spot. It was a big sticker shock that 7 Sando's and 5 drinks cost $115! We ordered the Chicken Katsu, Egg Salad and Fruit & Cream Sando's to try and were slightly disappointed. The chicken was moist but was a bit thin and cold and didn't have the crispy crust. The egg salad was good but I feel I have had better elsewhere. The fruit & crème was not overly sweet which was good but it needed more fruit filling. The teas were at least strong and bold. Service was friendly but we had to wait over 20 minutes after ordering for our food.

Yelp
I wanted to be excited for this place as I'm a huge fan of Japanese sandos. After recently visiting Hawaii where they have them EVERYWHERE, I was so happy to see an ad in social media for this new spot in Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley. I heard all the initial hype but waited a couple of months after they opened to finally try them out. They have a handful of options for the the sandos. The Chicken Katsu is their top seller but I wanted to show some love to their other sandos so I got the Menchi Katsu and the Egg Salad. For the record, I love egg salad and make a pretty darn good version at home. So call me surprised when I ended up really not liking Kumo's version. Plain and simple, it was just too salty. Those familiar with real egg salad sandos know that some of the highlights are how light and umami-forward these sandwiches are. Here it so salty that I had to ask myself if they made it with salted egg. For a price tag of $12, I expected better. I did, however, enjoy the Menchi sando much better. The patty was seasoned just right and provided a good crunch to compliment the soft bread.

Yelp
Got the chicken katsu combo with red pickeld ginger sauce and the menchi (ground beef and pork) katsu combo with katsu sauce. The combo comes with two scoops of egg salad and your choice of green tea or black tea in addition to the sandwiches The egg salad was a bit too salty for my tastes. I feel like I need bread to cut the saltiness. The sandwiches were good. They were juicy, tender and crispy on the outside. Service was a bit slow. It took about 20 minutes to get our order. It's a small shop, but there's plenty of seating outside Will try the menchi katsu with red pickled ginger sauce next time

Yelp
The chicken katsu is delicious. The chicken is so crisp with the softness of the bread. I also had the Strawberry Cream. It is thick and wonderful and every bite had strawberry in it! I'm very happy with the service. Very clean cut and I believe everything is made to order so it comes out when it's done. The food court that this place is in is busy at times with kids running around and families enjoying their time eating outside. There are umbrellas for shade. Overall I had a great experience.

Yelp
I came in on sunday, the worker, Angel, was very helpful! She recommended the cold sampler, and it was great! The strawberries were fresh and the whipped cream was really tasty. The egg salad was good too. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
The sandwiches are really good! I was expecting the chicken katsu to be the best but it was a bit underwhelming but still so yummy. - The menchi katsu with pickled red ginger was such a good combo. The pickled red ginger compliments the ground beef and pork so well. - The egg salad sando was so yummy & jammy. You can taste the sweetness from the kewpie mayo + the pepper brings a faint spice that balances it out! - The fruit & cream sando had a thick cream in the middle with strawberries, kiwi, tangerines and grapes! It was a good amount of sweetness and the fruit was very refreshing!!

Yelp
In a small shopping plaza center near an Aldi. It's tucked into a corner behind the subway. It was a little difficult to locate. It's been open for a bit so lines aren't as bad now. They have outside seating with umbrella's shared with other businesses. No inside seating. Food: bread was too thick in all of them. Fruit sando - very pretty. Not really sure bread goes it was a little odd. Didn't like this as much as I thought I would. Menchi - I liked this the best, good crunch and flavor Katsu - didn't like this one. Dunno if it was meat but was just meh. Early grey - good flavor but just didn't like it $4 It was almost $50 for these three items and a drink. Way too expensive. I don't think I'll be back. Each sandwich is $15.

Yelp
Their soft opening is coming soon! Was able to go and check this place out. For refreshment, i got the oolong tea half sweet. Im a sucker for oolong. Love the earthy roasty taste of it. For the sandos i got their Chicken Katsu Sando. Jidori chicken, napa cabbage, and original katsu sauce. The milk bread was thick and not too soft but bouncy. The chicken was crispy and i love how light it tasted and not oily. Napa cabbage gave a nice crunch texture. And the sauce wasn't too salty. Their egg salad sando, made with marinated golden yolk eggs and kewpie mayo. Again same milk bread. Egg was creamy and had an umami flavor. And lastly their fruits and cream sando. Made with housemade cream and fruits (mine had strawberry, kiwi, and blueberries). Same milk bread. Love how it was creamy and fluffy to dense cream and not too sweet, you can taste the vanilla. And the fruits were fresh and crisp. No soggy fruits! Love that. A little shop hidden in a small plaza between some other food places. Service was great! Staff is friendly! And the food came out pretty quick!

Yelp
I got the strawberry cream sandwich and it was good... but not $12 good. It's just a whipped cream sandwich which was good but for that price I went next door and got an entire meal. The strawberries were whole which made it a bit difficult to eat. Service was quick but overall I would probably try another place next time with more options and cheaper prices.
