Kuppanna Indian Restaurant and Bar Review - North Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"If “bottomless dosa” is on your Indian restaurant bingo card, head to Kuppanna in North Austin on Wednesday nights, where it’s a cool $14. Never-ending dosas aside, the casual restaurant serves a long menu of South Indian specialties in a dining room filled with hanging paper decorations that may or may not be from Party City. Kuppana’s versions of podi idly and dosa are solid, but we prefer the dishes you can sop up with a few orders of hot and buttery parotta, like the tender kongu mutton gravy or vegetable korma. The parotta is easily the star of the show. Just because it's trapped in a supporting actor’s role doesn't mean you have to treat it as such. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Nicolai McCrary

Had a great South Indian lunch at Kuppanna in Plano. The Kuzhambu Kalakki was rich and comforting. The mutton biryani made with fragrant jeera samba rice was flavorful and aromatic, served with excellent raita and chicken gravy. The Chicken Pallipalayam with kuska was a standout—tender chicken, fresh coconut, and authentic flavors. Finished with refreshing nannari sarbath. Overall, tasty food and a pleasant dining experience. Would definitely visit again!

Dined few times at this location, and had great experience every time! Kupanna is the place to go for flavorful authentic south indian food! Meals is the most sought after item on menu, with elaborate and extensive courses each of those packed with authentic flavors and handmade spices!! Ala carte options are good as well!! For kids to enjoy their favorites at customized spice levels. Vegetarian options are amazing and customer service is great!! Took some friends for New Year special meals and they relished it so much and lifelong foodie memories!! They vouched for the non veg dishes that they tried, beyond excellent! Service is excellent and they understand and cater to our needs at the table. It was great pleasure to know the authentic spices comes from Coimbatore, so aroma rich and scrumptious!! 😋😋 Items tried: Vegetarian special meals, Executive meals, Gobi Manchurian, omelet, etc. Waiting times can vary with peak times.

Google
Once of the best restaurant if you are looking to some authentic South Indian cuisine. Absolutely worth for each dollar. We had bought a mutton thali and a chicken special thali. We couldn't finish the food as it was little too much for each person. Note that this place is mostly crowded due the popularity.!

Google
What a lovely place with amazing food, excellent staff and a buzzy atmosphere. I must highly recommend the chicken appetizer. I totally lost sense of time eating every morsel of that chicken. The ghee dhosa is delicious, the parrota is perfectly flaky and the chicken and mutton curries were delightful. Ownership is so kind and hospitable. We are coming back again and again and again!!

Google
Authentic South Indian Flavors Done Right! We visited Kuppana with friends, and it instantly became one of our favorite spots in Dallas. The food tastes just like home..full of rich, authentic South Indian flavors. I ordered the Mutton meal, which was absolutely delicious, and my wife had the Chicken Kara dosa, super filling with the perfect balance of spices in every dish. The highlight for me was the Pineapple Kesari first time trying it, and it was love at first bite! The staff were friendly, service was quick, and the overall vibe was cozy yet lively. Definitely recommending this place to anyone craving real South Indian food in Dallas. 🌶️🍛

Google
Had two parotta combos, one mutton kongu gravy (lamb curry) and paneer butter masala. They were both delicious, and the lamb curry was the best I’ve had in recent memory. Very rich and complex flavors, nice consistency, and the lamb was perfectly cooked. The parottas were hot and flaky. Will definitely be back to try other items! The service was kind and attentive. The music was a little loud but it was fun to watch the music videos on the TV.

We recently visited this Indian restaurant and were completely blown away. While we’re not experts in Indian cuisine, just familiar with the basics,we were genuinely impressed by how flavorful and well-seasoned everything was. The dishes were rich, aromatic, and full of depth. You could tell that a lot of care went into preparing each plate. The portions were generous, and every bite felt like a journey into something new yet deeply comforting. The restaurant itself feels like a hidden gem a bit of a “hole in the wall” in the best way. It’s quiet, calm, and you can see a steady flow of regulars coming and going, which is always a good sign. We decided to dine in for lunch and were met with excellent service. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, checking in just enough to make sure we were enjoying everything. What stood out the most was how this experience sparked a deeper curiosity about Indian culture and food. It truly felt like they brought a piece of India to our table, and we left feeling full, satisfied, and genuinely grateful. We’ll definitely be back and next time, we might even bring friends with us. Highly recommend.

Google
Fabulous food, service, and atmosphere. My mother’s first Indian food experience and she ate everything. John came by multiple times to check on us and each time we were just eating more food it was so good! We had one each of chicken, mutton, vegetarian meal, and tried the fish gravy. There was nothing left uneaten. It was all that good.

Yelp
Their weekend Pandhi Meals - featuring a biryani of your choice along with many accompaniments - is a solid value. Their curries and veggies are tasty and servera gladly come around often to offer you more of any item you would like. The servers are nice & timely and I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of items that came with the meal. For what you get, their prices are fair. Their Little Elm location is also good although less busy when we went there (both locations were visited during peak lunch hours on a Saturday, just weeks apart). Looking forward to a return visit in the near future to try out other a late carte menu items as well.

Yelp
Got their Mutton Biryani Meal when I came to try the restaurant out and it was fantastic. It came with several other tins of curries to try and it was a great value for the price. Their unlimited thalis are only available on the weekends so you'll be disappointed if you come in expecting to try it on a week day. Their cauliflower Manchurian was pretty tasty, and very flavorful. The food was excellent and service was great! Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, Rajah was the name of my server and he made sure I was enjoying my food and asked if I wanted refills on any of the curries that I had. He was really kind and I left the restaurant excited to come back!

Yelp
Lovely food. Best in South Indian cuisine. Vijay did a fantastic job with serving. Ask for Vijay when you are there.

Yelp
The food served here, native to Tamil Nadu, was delicious and each dish was plentiful. Apparently quite authentic, since there wasn't another non-Indian in the restaurant the entire time we were there besides us. I was quite impressed with how everyone of the employees on this busy evening seemed authentically happy and truly desiring to have us fully satisfied with our experience, and in particular our waitresses Sahini and Shanmarti (please forgive any misspellings). Thank you for your excellent service! Yelp
I had the pleasure of experiencing the culinary offerings at Kuppanna located on Custer Rd in Plano. Their non-vegetarian meals boasts an assortment of three distinct non-vegetarian curries, complemented by a mixed vegetarian curry. The selection includes fish, chicken, and mutton curries. While the chicken and fish curries are not so appealing to be desired, the mutton curry truly excelled in terms of its rich and flavorful profile. The mixed vegetable curry, though, fell within the realm of average. Summing up, I would opine that while the dining experience was satisfactory, it falls short of being an exceptional choice for a meal. The service was great but was very slow and ambiance was pleasant.

Yelp
Amazing food!! Authentic Coimbatore cuisine.. highly recommend!! The staff and their service is exceptional. Sahi was very efficient and ensured we were satisfied with our order and the meals they served. The cooks deserve a call out. Please keep up the good service and food standard.

Yelp
We dined here this past weekend and left with a very positive experience overall. This is my first time trying Kongu Nadu regional Indian food and it did not disappoint! We ordered the biryani combo and parota/palaya chicken combo and both were delicious and perfectly seasoned. We also got the fish gravy and masala omelette. A majority of the Indian restaurants in our area do not have a sense of balance when it comes to spices and seasoning so a big kudos to the chef and the kitchen here for providing a good balance so the diner actually gets to taste the food. We also had our kiddo with us and the server and manager were both very helpful in picking out couple options that he can enjoy (we went with the idiyappam and Japan chicken) he liked them both. Service is prompt and quick. Wish they would spruce up the place a bit though as it looks worn down including a missing ceiling square right above one of the tables :(

Yelp
We just randomly ended up here tonight and are amazed at how tasty everything was. And how very polite the service and management was. It's just so rare to run into that anymore. Super yum, will be back.

Yelp
The food was great, authentic South Indian food. Long queue on weekends. We enjoyed all the different dishes especially the different Non Veg & Biryani meals

Yelp
Review for Vegetarian dishes! Thoroughly enjoyed every dish. Staff was friendly and food arrived right on time. The parotta + salna was exceptional. Reminded me of authentic taste from back home in india. The vegetable fried rice and kotthu parotta was spot on. All starters were great, especially the corn pepper fry was yummy!

Yelp
I recently dined at Kupanna , and I must say it was a highly disappointing experience. The food arrived approximately 45 minutes later since we ordered.

Yelp
I had a fish meal but was disappointed. The fish didn't seem freshly prepared, impacting both its flavor and texture. It lacked the expected freshness, making the overall experience unsatisfactory.

Yelp
Great first Indian restaurant experience. Delicious food and good service. Went here with a friend from India and she said it tastes like the food back home. There was nothing I are that I wouldn't eat again. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
Ordered the non veg special thali-$15.99 plus tax ! Spend $20 with tip . Literally got one piece chicken , one piece mutton and one piece of fish fillet . Basically paid for the rice and rasam 20 bucks ! Rip off !! Never going again.

Yelp
This was amazing. I felt like I was back in Bangalore, eating with my hands with the option of silverware from a banana leaf. Hand eating really does taste better. Rich and creamy mango lassis, mutton, and the chicken 65 was the best I've had. The only thing missing were the delicious crispy curry leaves, but the perfect fry and flavor of the chicken made it perfect. Coming back!

Yelp
Chicken curry to-go. Medium spice is perfect with just the right amount of kick. I can't comment on dine-in service, but my food was ready within 10 minutes when I was told it was going to be 20 minutes; so they under promised and over-delivered which is a plus. It's very good.

Yelp
Food is very authentic village homemade style, loved everything we ordered. Pepper rasam was yumm n spicy(good) Pallipalayam chicken: yummy and Parotta: good Chicken kongu gravy: again village style and yumm but quantity was less. Kongu chicken biryani: ok ok Overall it's a must try restaurant.

Yelp
There are many South Indian restaurants in Dallas where we have eaten but none can match Kuppanna. The food is flavorful keeping with the Coimbatore style cuisine. We will be doing a small wedding soon and we are planning to have Kuppanna do the catering for one of the events based on how much we liked the food. Great place for South Indian food if you are looking for it.

Yelp
Love this place. People here are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Food is amazing. Authentic. 80% of the people eating here were Indian which indicates to me I found the good stuff. Didn't understand 99% of menu. They were patient and explained everything. Made great recommendations I loved. Spices were so delicious. Felt like I was eating at a family meal with great friends. I'll be back every time I am in Dallas. Seriously good food.

Foodiee L.

Yelp
Nice Food. Had biryani, parotta, chicken 65, pallipalayam chicken and thalis. All the items in the thali tasted good. Sambar , rasam poriyal are exceptions only concern is fish curry was sweeter to the palate. Maintain the same taste, cleanliness always. Everyone know its tough to maintain same standards as time flies.

Yelp
We were here as a family to spend some quality time. Had a horrible experience with the service. Our food came at different times. Mine came first. Waited for others for 30 mins after that I started eating the iced dosa else it would have been frozen. My wife wanted to leave. We did complain about our food delivery.. after that my kid and wife got the food.. don't attempt to come here if you are looking for a family eating experience..

Yelp
I went there for unlimited lunch meal. Food quality and service were okay. All their drinks are super sweet, I found drinks expensive for the sugar water. Meal with drink was $29.89. I won't go there again.

Monisha S.

Yelp
Went there for Pongal lunch (non-veg). In the meal there was no non-veg appetizer, vada was not cooked properly. Provided only long beans fry. They count salt, pickle as a dish. OMG. They provided one chappathi without any curry for that. When asked they gave just a piece of chicken which is unbelievable. When asked again they gave just another piece. Then they gave chicken biryani, which was ok. Then asked mutton curry with rice and they served only a bone and some gravy. After seeing this, never felt like eating. The sweet Pongal was not good. And the paruppu payasam was horrible. This spoiled not only the meal but the whole day. Never ever going back there. Take your own risk.
