"Frill-free and well-priced for omakase (there's a 12-piece option for $85), everything here is dressed and plated by the 70-year-old chef Ishizuka (grab a spot at the 12-seat bar to watch him work). You won't find wasabi or soy sauce—only ginger, as it's traditional to the max: In fact, it’s only marked outside by a white wall with a blue curtain, that's bedecked with a small white bow. Highlights: Belt fish, squid, red snapper, and seared salmon. Photo: Jebb"

18 Top Restaurants & Bars in Alphabet City - Eater NY

"Kura, tucked away discreetly on the eastern end of St. Mark’s Place, is one of the finest East Village sushi dens for shelling out on a superb, straightforward omakase experience. Sushi chef Norihiro Ishizuka slices generous portions of ultra-fresh fish, available as a 10-piece sushi plus hand roll omakase option, or, for additional cooked dishes added into the mix, try the kappo version." - Alexandra Ilyashov

22 Top Japanese Restaurants to in the East Village - Eater NY

"This critical darling is as notable for its distinguished omakase as it is for its chef, the always-present septuagenarian Norihiro Ishizuka. A meal here might start with simple nori or roe over rice before diving straight into an array of fish and seafood that could include o toro and California and Japanese sea urchin in addition to lesser-known offerings like black-throat sea perch and cherry blossom shrimp. In 2015, Ishizuka launched an equally cozy udon shop nearby called Raku, serving seven udons with toppings like bean curd and tempura." - Dan Q. Dao

I've never had omakase before, but I'm glad my first experience was at Kura. I went with 16 pieces and the sake flight. Each dish was unique and excellent, and the freshness of each piece was undeniable. The fatty tuna and salmon literally dissolves in your mouth. The service was also thoughtful and attentive. This was probably the best sushi I've ever had. I wish I could've taken the time to take better/more pictures without feeling so uncultured. Can't wait to come back for the 20 piece.

The omakase experience at Kura is simply stunning. The fish is fresh, flavorful, and masterfully prepared. You can choose from 12, 16, or 18 pieces based on your budget or appetite, but keep in mind that there are a number of extra dishes (including miso soup, small starters, egg sushi, and a dessert bite) that are not included in that piece count. Given the incredible quality of the dining experience here, the prices are relatively affordable ($125 for 16 pieces, compared to $200+ for comparable places in the city). If you’re looking for truly top-quality sushi and you don’t want to pay exorbitant prices, look no further than Kura. Make sure to make a reservation in advance for the sushi bar, watching the talented sushi chefs make each piece is half of the fun!

A 15-piece omakase dinner for $125. I loved some of the more unique pieces here including conch, mantis shrimp, and saltwater eel. The full meal comes with a complimentary appetizer, a hand roll, a tamago piece with the restaurant’s name printed on the top, miso soup, a small dessert (macaron), and green tea. They also give you a little surprise for your birthday or special occasion so definitely worth checking out!

My first omakase experience and I have to say it was AMAZING! I’ve never been a huge raw fish person but I ate every piece of the 15 the chef set on my plate! They were all so fresh and literally melted in my mouth. No extra soy sauce or wasabi were needed because each piece was balance perfectly. The server that seated us and kept our waters full was also very nice and professional. Water was never below half way and no trash was left on the table for more than 2 mins. DEFINITELY WORTH AND CANT WAIT TO GO AGAIN!

Very traditional and authentic Omakase style sushi. You basically choice only how many pieces you want, 12, 16, 20, or 20+ and the chef makes whatever he prepared for that day on his menu. I got the 20 piece and my wife got the 16 piece, it was more than enough for both of us, I probably would have been happy with the 12 piece, as they also give you a little dessert, soup and 2 appetizers. High quality service, my water never went below half and the wait staff to customer ratio is very low, why you get such amazing service. Very authentic experience!

I wish I lived in NY just so I could frequent Kura more often. My wife and I come here every time we visit NY and we are always leaving happy. We always go for the 15 piece omakasa, which seems perfect amount for us. The food is amazing but the whole experience and service makes it worth coming everytime.

What a wonderful sushi experience! Every piece was so delightful that I couldn’t wait to try the next piece. The ambiance and food preparation was one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had in the city. I highly recommend!

I have not really experienced traditional omakase but if this is it, I'm gonna be an addict. incredible food. each dish carefully curated. fish was incredibly fresh tasting. perfect compliments of rice and miso. speaking of miso, best miso soup ever...I know that's strange but it's true. three chefs each taking care of a couple customer sets. servers for dishes and sale were so attentive. the littlest spill gets picked up without notice. worth every penny.
