Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is a sushi conveyor belt chain located in Arsenal Yards, Watertown, MA. It's Boston's only conveyer belt sushi restaurant at the moment. I have seen many conveyor belt sushi locations go down and under in the past decade (Chinatown, Boston seaport, and also Natick Mall). Although Kura is not the first of its kind, it has proven promising enough to outlast its predecessors. I hope its here to stay for a long time.
I have been to Kura at least five times now. Attempting to go during grand opening back in March of last year was probably a grand mistake. During the first few weeks of opening, the wait times were literally 999 minutes. After the initial hype died down, and with the help of my trusty Kura Sushi App, I was able to reserve a table successfully without having to wait 1.5 hours as I did during my first visit. I highly recommend downloading the Kura Sushi app. You can check in and view live wait times. Also, you can earn points leading to coupons (usually $5 increments) toward your next meal. These coupons however expire within 30 days.
Each plate of sushi is about $3.60. Drinks are about $3.90 each if I remember correctly. Drinks are very expensive but refillable. You get freshly grated wasabi and soy sauce and ginger at the table. During the last visit, they had ponzu sauce instead of soy sauce so I had to ask the waiter to switch it out.
I am always amazed by the quality and freshness of the sushi for the price. Fifteen plates of sushi equal one toy. For my family of four, two adults and two children, we usually order about 30+ plates for two toys. The check is typically a little over $130 each time before tax and tip. Sometimes, there are free t-shirts promotions. Therefore, more reason to download the app and to sign up for email notifications. The monthly emails notify you of specials for the month and the theme of the toys (mostly Japanese manga characters). Toys range form keychains to stickers to tatoo. Small trinkets that will fit into the little red or yellow balls. I wished they have a recycling option for the plastic balls.
My favorites sushis are the salmon toro, seared salmon with cream cheese, eel with cream cheese, umami oil salmon, Hokkaido scallop, seared scallop with Japanese mayo, Spanish mackerel, squid, and the sea conch (crunchy). I am not a fan of the sweet shrimp sushi or premium beef sushi. I am not a fan of tuna either. I prefer yellowtail. The salmon, eel, and scallop sushis are probably my favorite go to.
My two favorite gunkan sushi would have to be the real crab meat and the ikura ones. Ikura norimaki is my favorite rolled sushi followed by the rainbow maki. The takoyaki is also delicious and popular among my kids. Of the cooked entrees, the best would be the beef udon. The ramen lacked flavor, and the beef ojyu is overall small portion. These dishes make for great fillers. You can order these items through the touch screen menu and they arrive in the upper belt. Drinks are delivered via a cute robot.
Favorite dessert so far has to be the limited special for this month, vanilla ice cream with crispy fried mochi. I hope they make it a permanent item. The taiyaki ice cream is something I would try at least once as well as the wasabimochi. The milky creamy tart is my brother's favorite dessert. It's more sweet than custardy.
Overall, service is stellar each of the five times I have visited in the past year. I recommend ordering from the menu instead of waiting for the sushi to arrive on the belt if you sit in the middle of the restaurant or toward the end of the conveyor belt. Many of the limited quantity items would be gone before it reaches your table. Which also means a lot of time looking at empty belts with no food. See my pictures.
