"Set to open in Arsenal Yards during the summer of 2021, Kura Sushi is a Japan-based conveyor-belt sushi chain founded in 1977 that has grown to more than 450 locations across Japan, Taiwan, and the United States, and this Watertown outpost will be its first in New England. Diners place orders on touch screens and pluck selections from a moving conveyor belt, choosing from countless sushi options as well as ramen, gyoza, crispy squid, shrimp tempura, fried chicken, and various other Japanese snacks. The experience is deliberately kitschy and interactive: eat 15 sushi plates to receive a “Bikkura Pon” prize (examples include a Lego-like toy and sushi-shaped erasers), and after depositing five plates in the disposal slot beside each seat diners are entertained by animated videos — an approach that sounds absurd but also fun in small doses. Positioned as part of an eclectic Arsenal Yards dining lineup, Kura is being presented as a modern way to serve traditional Japanese cuisine to friends and families in Watertown and greater Boston." - Terrence Doyle
