"Chicken Katsu Curry We like Kurumaya’s chicken katsu curry because it has that proper homemade feel. Think huge homely bowls of rice, crunchy panko chicken, and a thick sauce where you can taste all the fresh vegetables that went into it, with just a hint of sweetness. Basically, it’s a proper hug of a dish. Just down the road from the Barbican, Kurumaya is an intimate little restaurant (read as: tiny) and it’s always worth getting a round of sushi here too." - heidi lauth beasley

"Ever since Geri quit the Spice Girls, we’ve been bitter people. That’s why when anyone describes anywhere as ‘intimate’, all we hear is that getting a seat will be a nightmare. Kurumaya is an intimate sushi spot in the City, but luckily for you and our cold hearts, none of the above are true. Yes, this affordable Japanese spot is pretty tiny, but they’ll do their best to find space for you and worst comes to worst, you can get all of the sushi to takeaway. We’d also recommend doubling your order and going in on the chicken katsu curry and ramen too—we’re pretty sure that’s what 2 Become 1 was about anyway." - Heidi Lauth Beasley, Jake Oliver

"Ever since Gerry quit the Spice Girls we’ve been bitter people. That’s why when anyone describes anywhere as ‘intimate’ all we hear is that getting a seat will be a nightmare, and there’ll probably be some sad Yankee candle on your matchbox table. Kurumaya is an intimate sushi spot in the City, but luckily for you and our cold, cold hearts, none of the above is true of this affordable Japanese restaurant. Yes, it is pretty tiny but they’ll do their best to find space for you, and worst comes to worst, you can get all of the sushi to takeaway from their shop counter. We’d also recommend doubling your order and going in on the chicken katsu curry too - we’re pretty sure that’s what 2 Becomes 1 was about anyway. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

Really close to Barbican station. A really nice little place and they seemed to be decently busy both times I stopped by, but I managed to get a seat - once inside and once by the window seats. The staff are nice and friendly and the food was great. They said the chicken is halal

My partner and I dropped in here as walk-ins and are so glad we did! The staff were wonderful and friendly, the food was incredible. Fantastic ramen and I'd personally recommend the unagi don; tasted the same as I've had in Japan. I intend to go again as often as I'm in the area.

Nice little izakaya with strange opening hours. Tuna was great, but I think the rice was day-old. Ramen broth was perfection, sadly can’t shake the feeling that the noodles were actually spaghetti…

Fish was pretty fresh and they had a good variety of nigiris and rolls. Unfortunately the rice was a little on the mushy side which was a bit of a let down as it looked so beautiful.

Follow @frenchguycooking on YouTube. It really got me wanting to try Ramen. There is not really the option in my hometown, so I had to wait until a work trip to the capital. Thankfully, round the corner, I have found my place. Walked in, ordered a google review picture (pork ramen), and loved every mouthful. The food felt like it was giving me a hug. This will be the first and last place I ever visit for ramen!!

Chirashi is exceptional on this tiny little restaurant. Although the place is small, their food is fresh and tasty.

Amazing food! Tiny little space for dine in but feels quite a cozy Japanese style. Grilled eel, sashimi and the bento were excellent! Slightly bit pricey but given the location and the quality food. It's worth it.

Managed to sit at the window table in the entrance as they were fully booked for a quick dinner before going to the Barbican. The food was excellent and staff were friendly. Excellent flavour and good portions. Cosy feeling as well, even though we didn't make it into the actual restaurant.
