Boston’s Best Halal Restaurants | Eater Boston

"Egyptian restaurant Kushari & Grill features a fully halal menu, owner Mohamed Hassanein told Eater in late 2021 upon opening the restaurant in Medford. A native of Alexandria, Egypt, Hassanein previously ran the Mr. Kushari food truck in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood. Located right by Tufts, Kushari & Grill serves the namesake koshari, a popular street food in Egypt; hawawshi, dough stuffed with a spiced mix of ground beef, onions, bell peppers, and parsley; shawarma; kebabs; and more. Try the spicy falafel roll-up." - Erika Adams

Fall 2021 Restaurant Openings Guide in and Around Boston | Eater Boston

"Opened near Tufts in October by Mohamed Hassanein and his wife, this Egyptian spot serves koshari (Egypt’s national vegan dish of lentils, pasta, and rice topped with a tangy tomato-vinegar sauce), hawawshi (a spiced ground-beef-stuffed dough akin to a calzone), everything is made from scratch, and all items are halal." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Egyptian Restaurants Koshari Mama and Kushari and Grill Open North of Boston | Eater Boston

"Run by Alexandria native Mohamed Hassanein and his wife Irina, this Medford spot evolved from the Mr. Kushari food truck and serves scratch-made, fully halal Egyptian comfort food. The menu is anchored by koshari—Egypt’s national dish and a popular street food—and hawawshi (a calzone-like dough stuffed with spiced ground beef, onions, peppers, and parsley); other offerings include shawarma, kebabs, falafel, eggplant salad, moussaka, baklava and more. Highlights called out by the owner include Egyptian fries with a secret garlic sauce and a spicy falafel roll-up. The restaurant is primarily geared toward takeout and delivery with limited seating, serves lunch and dinner daily, and stays open until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

I ordered two dishes to go.. the Hawawshi and the mixed grill shawarma plate. The latter was mostly delicious and the quantity was generous. The shawarma strips and the kofta was the best part. The rice was good, salad and pickles were fresh and hummus was perfect. However the chicken kabob pieces were charred and dry from being overcooked. I would have given this dish an automatic five stars if there was more shawarma and no chicken. The Hawawshi was interesting. It was my first time trying it and I would describe it as similar to a calzone crossed with a meat pie. I liked it but it was missing a bit of spice for my taste buds. Would like to try this place again.

Google
A small restaurant with four tables and chairs fixed to the floor, narrow and uncomfortable. Perhaps normal chairs would be better, and if you are not in good health, you will not be able to sit. The restaurant needs to find a good Egyptian chef because the food has no taste. It needs to print several copies of the menu instead of sticking a worn-out piece of paper on the cashier's table, which wastes the time of customers and workers. It also needs to pay a little more attention to cleanliness. I hope the restaurant will be better so that it represents the face of Egypt's civilization.

Google
One of my greatest experiences. I tried both the chicken and mixed grill shawarma plate which was a true explosion of flavor; tangy sauce, savory grilled meat, and some fresh vegetables all topped on rice. I also recommend baklava, a sweet pastry that’s flaky but dense at the same time. Incredible prices for everything on the menu.

Google
By far, hands down!! The BEST Egyptian Kushari (Vegan platter) and mouthwatering savoury flavours in the Grilled Mixed Meat plate in all of Boston!! FINALLY we found a place where your mouth will literally thank you!! Definitely coming back for dine in only!! We also ordered the Kushari to go two weeks later but it disappointed bcuz it wasn’t as fresh as dine-in. The seating isn’t classy and I’d otherwise not even give it a chance based on looks, but I was craving real food & grilled meat! This place definitely did not disappoint when we dined in the first time! I’m still dreaming of the flavours!! A must try! 💯

Google
I ate half of my Shawarma wrap and then I decided to eat the other half for dinner wasn’t expecting a piece of glass to be in my Shawarma wrap, but just wanted to let you guys know and be aware. Be careful it pierced the inside of my mouth.

Google
We ordered a lot of food. The good part of the restaurant is it was open till late. Everything was great. I was a bit disappointed in the koshari. It was a weird blend of a lot of stuff. The pasta , the rice and sweet red sauce etc just didn't make a good combination . The falafels were rich with flavours and the other dishes were decent too. A good restaurant to try out

Google
Awesome #halal Egyptian food! We've had the rotisserie chicken and hawawshi, and both were excellent. The rotisserie chicken is especially delicious as it is cooked to perfection and served with delicious hummus, garlic sauce, salad and your choice of rice or fries. The fries are also crispy and tasty. Service is fast and there's ample space & street parking to dine in. We'll be back to try out everything else on the menu!

Google
Admittedly, this was my first time eating Egyptian food. However, I could tell by the quality of the food for the price and the patrons in the restaurants that this is probably the best and most authentic Egyptian food in Boston. The food was super flavorful and very well made.

Yelp
Kushari has been on my radar for a long time - but with so many delicious Mediterranean takeaway spots in Medford and Somerville, it can be risky to try a new place when you have several fantastic standbys. I'll add that given recent inflation, sometimes a simple, casual take-out meal can end up costing $50-$100 and at that point I'd rather just go out and enjoy some ambience rather than do take-out at home. Having said that, we finally tried Kushari: it exceeded our expectations and is also truly reasonable. We ordered the the Kushari, Spicy Chicken Shawarma Roll-Up, Falafel Roll-Up, Hawawshi (pita stuffed with minced meat) and a side of Falafel balls because we wanted to get a sense of Kushari's menu. Each dish is pretty affordable and has very generous portions: we ended up having plenty of leftovers for a second dinner a couple days later. The Spicy Chicken Shawarma and Falafel roll-ups were both fantastic - lots of protein, seasoning, sauce, and pickles. Our order also came with complimentary sauce on the side - so if you're fearful of a dry wrap like I was, fear not! The Kushari was good (there's probably a learning curve since this is a new-to-me dish) and I think next time we really want to try the Egyption Macarona Bechamel and grape leaves next time. The Hawawshi (pita with minced meat) was extremely tasty. As others have mentioned, the Falafel is fresh, delicious, and flavorful! We're absolutely adding Kushari to our regular rotation, whether we're craving wraps and/or a larger meal (they have Rotisserie chicken as well). At only about $11-$12 (incl tax, etc) for a wrap, this is a truly affordable, generous take-out meal that won't break the bank when you just can't get it together to prepare a full meal at home.

Yelp
We got take out and the kushari is so good!! The restaurant makes their food at a good pace. We ordered a lot of stuff so there was one mistake, but the owner handled it well and we got a refund! First time I had Egyptian food and really like it!

Yelp
So glad we found a late night shawarma spot nearby! Prices are reasonable and they're open until 2AM on the weekends. We got the falafel plate and the chicken shawarma plate. Portions are generous and the plates included hummus, pita, salad, rice, tahini, and garlic sauce (for the shawarma)! The falafel was crispy and perfectly seasoned, some of the better falafel I've had. The chicken was juicy and flavorful and paired well with the garlic sauce. This food definitely hit the spot and we'll be back to try more things on the menu!

Yelp
We recently discovered Kushari and Grill closer to Tufts University. We ordered the Hawashi and Mixed Grill. Both items were delicious and provided a generous portion for a very fair price relative to the broader Boston/Cambridge area. I'd definitely return and try out their menu again. I also appreciated the offering of a white/garlic sauce in addition to tahini. For some reason, most Boston area middle eastern restaurants only typically offer Tahini if anything! Note: The entire menu is halal according to the signs posted.

Yelp
I think they do a really good job with their Egyption cuisine. One of the things I love the most about this place is the fact that they make really good falafel. The falafel's or not like hard frozen rounds that have no flavor and are hard to bite. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and just bursting with so much flavor and they sit on the bed of pickles that complement the falafels really well. I also highly recommend the chicken Shawarma because it has so much flavor and the best way to maximize on the taste is to have it in the wrap. The beef kebabs have a nice smoky flavor and the rice is also great. It's a combination that makes you feel good after you eat. I also really love their garlic sauce. It's fantastic and they never skip out on the portions.

Yelp
Phenomenal shawarma. I will be back for more!! Ordering online ahead is smart if you are in a hurry.

Yelp
Late night offerings! I stopped by around 1:30 am and the place was empty but my meal was freshly made! The + Loved the chicken shwarma roll up. The chicken was tender and well seasoned and everything fit so perfectly. It was fantastic The - I didn't like the hummus side I ordered at all. It was obviously premade and didn't taste that fresh. It was pretty boring and almost reminded me of the texture of refried beans from a can at that point. Big disappointment with the hummus. Overall still a 4 in my book due to their late hours, nice and attentive staff, and for at least making mostly fresh food (roll up).

Yelp
Genuinely one of the best meals I've had. Major. We got the Kushari, Hawawshi, and veggie moussaka.

Yelp
Food is excellent, people are friendly, I've never had a meal take too long despite eating here a dozen times, roughly (for the person earlier who ate in, they do a lot of online biz, so they might have been slammed with orders, also, who cares) The only criticism I'd have, is sometimes the nicely charred kebab meat will poke through a wrap, making a bit of a mess (but again - who cares) Keep up the good work!

Yelp
Personally, from an outside background, these arent my preferred food of choice. my friend who is from Egypt really enjoys this food and says its very authentic. I personally got the grape leaves and kafta kabob plate. the food was alright, i just had to take off a star because they took so long to make my food, i think i waited like 20min just sitting. 1) grape leaves: served cold, is filled with rice, with a tangy taste 2) kafta kabob plate: juicy kabob, comes with a bed of rice, and some veggies/salad that i did not care for. the hummus was good, and it came with pita bread. overall-- i cant decide if i want to come back.. i wont leave a bad star review because i want to support small businesses, but this was the best i could do..

Yelp
Yum yum yummy!!! They have the best hummus and this funky calzone with just meat and the dough is different. A must try. I am drilling just thinking this tasty treat! A must visit.

Yelp
TLDR: You could do worse if you're looking for falafel but some of the rest is a hit or miss. The falafel is pretty good, as are most of the sauces (though not the one that appears to be salad dressing). The grape leaves aren't mushy but they are pretty flavorless. The hummus was pretty lackluster. The dish after which the place is named was pretty bland and probably the least edible. The roll up was passable.

Yelp
We ordered take-out and it was really good! We got spicy falafel plate and a mixed grill with some french fries. Falafel is one of the best we've had around. Not dry at all. Portions were very big. Great value for feeding the family.

Yelp
Closed Mondays. The first time I came here, it was the best falafel sandwich I've ever had in the Boston area. Their food isn't always consistent, but the falafel balls have fresh, whole coriander seeds in the recipe and are fried to order. At $9 a large plate, their vegan Kushari entrees are priced to sell and is my favorite. The ground lamb/beef blend kofta skewers were flavorful.

Wyeth T.

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews on this app, but I have to make an exception here. Kushari is my favorite restaurant in the Boston area. I highly recommend the hawashi (pita bread with meat inside), sort of like a calzone but thin and very crispy. Also recommend any of the shawarma plates, and the garlic sauce. Kushari is open later than most restaurants in the area, and is 100000x better then pizza days.... The workers / owners are extremely kind and respectful, and for the price, it's hard to beat the amount / quality of the food. Don't sleep on this place, the garlic sauce is fiyaaaa
google avatar

Greta D.

Yelp
First off, the fries with the garlic sauces were hands down the BEST side ever. This could be a full satisfing meal on its own.The homemade garlic sauces were made to perfection. It left me wondering what ingredient could make the garlic sauces this good. The kushari bowl was a tasty combination of almost ALL the carbs, topped with crispy caramelized fried onions that blended well with the flavors. That dish was something unique and I had never had anything like it before. This could serve several people. The mixed grill proteins were perfectly seasoned and soft. The kafta kabob was juicy and flavorful. The atmosphere was cozy, with several Egyptian decorations and a warm hospitable vibe from the owners. Definitely a must try! Can't wait to return to try the hawawshi and mousakka.

Yelp
I work in the area and it's so great that Kushari and Grill is open to give the local community more options than pizza. I've been here twice now and both times the food has been absolutely delicious. I'll be making frequent trips to Kushari!

Germeen E.

Yelp
Amazing food! The taste brought me back to Egypt right away! Service was great and fast!

Yelp
Delicious food and professional service. Kushari bowl is my favorite, also kofta is amazing and really tastes exactly like you eat it in Egypt.

Yelp
I love this place, and I so happy that there is such a cool eatery in Medford, MA. This is a small, family owned business, and the food is amazing. I've eaten there a few times, and always been amazed. The Hawashi itself is worth repeated trips. And the place is affordable! If you're looking for something different, delicious, and that won't make you pay extra for some hipster "coolness" factor, this is the place

Vivian S.

Yelp
Very impressed! Got a few things delivered and everything was very delicious. Delivery was surprisingly quick on a Friday night. Tried the Kushari bowl, chicken kebab plate, kofte and fries. I would come back for every single of these. The fries are thickly cut, well seasoned and so good! Kushari bowl has delicious fried onions on top and is so nourishing with lentils and chickpeas. The meats were really good too. And the hummus! This was our second time trying this place and we will definitely be back!

Amanda G.

Yelp
Fresh and flavorful!! Great presentation and portions. Got it delivered and was super fast. Looking foward to ordering again

Dave C.

Yelp
A welcome addition to the neighborhood. It's great to see some diverse dining options and the neighborhood has really benefited from having not only more choices but some healthy choices among them (including this place). Kushari bowl is great (especially with the different sauces), the chicken and falafel options are also great. The staff is helpful and courteous and the prices are reasonable and the food is fresh. I'd read the reviews of the fenway location + had high hopes + fortuntely was not disappointed with this place once they opened.

Yelp
Definitely a must visit ! The food is very good , fresh and authentic plus the portions are great. Also the customer service is excellent they are extremely kind at Kushari and Grill.

Elise F.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place as I LOVE kushari! I got a bowl of kushari and it was delicious. The hot sauce was just right. The portion was huge and the grape leaves were also very good. This is a great alternative to the endless pizza places on Boston Ave. 'll definitely be back!

Joan L.

Yelp
Just had the most fabulous chicken shawarma sandwich!!! Egyptian fries and garlic sauce, delicious. First time trying kushari; plate is huge, will be great left over. Will be back to try the shawarma plate!!
