Southern classics, fried & griddled dishes, breakfast & full bar

"On Sunday, November 3, Vice President Kamala Harris shook hands and took selfies with customers at an Avenue of Fashion spot. In its close to nine years in operation, the restaurant has become a popular destination for politicians on the campaign trail: in 2016, then-candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton ate at the restaurant, and Mayor Mike Duggan and former HUD Secretary Julian Castro paid the spot a visit in 2015." - Serena Maria Daniels

"The popular Avenue of Fashion all-day restaurant currently offers indoor and outdoor dining as well as carryout and delivery. There’s a chicken and waffles plate for nearly every taste at Kuzzo’s, but for an entry-level foray into the menu try the Bam Bam. Soft, thin, and faintly cinnamon spiced waffles are paired with two fried drumsticks. Wash it all down with a glass of Kool-Aid or a cocktail." - Amber Ogden

"On the Avenue of Fashion I visited a warm, bustling southern-style spot that opened at 19345 Livernois Ave called Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles. After more than two years of planning and a soft opening in late January, the restaurant—owned by former NFL player Ron Bartell—seats about 75 and pairs exposed brick and warm wood tones with local pop art curated by Red Bull House of Art; a mural behind the bar explains that “Kuzzo” is “a term of endearment for one who is a friend or family member,” and another wall reads “Celebrating Food, Family, & Friends.” The menu centers on Southern-influenced breakfast and lunch with 10 different chicken-and-waffle combinations (notably the Bam Bam, two drumsticks and a waffle, and the First Lady, chicken breast and a waffle), plus omelets, salads and sandwiches; beverages currently include lemonade, sweet tea and Kool-Aid with plans to add craft cocktails, beer and wine. The room already feels lively—friends and staff chat around tables—and the spot drew attention when Mayor Mike Duggan and HUD Secretary Julian Castro stopped by for chicken & waffles; the team is also planning a sun-soaked patio expansion for spring/summer." - Eater Staff

"In recent years, that has begun to change with places like Bartell's original restaurant Kuzzo's serving as a sort of catalyst to inspire other more contemporary spots to set up shop in the district." - Serena Maria Daniels

"I returned to a familiar Avenue of Fashion spot that reopened with many of its original favorites—chicken-and-waffles-focused comfort food—available for carryout and delivery." - Brenna Houck
