"On the Avenue of Fashion I visited a warm, bustling southern-style spot that opened at 19345 Livernois Ave called Kuzzo’s Chicken & Waffles. After more than two years of planning and a soft opening in late January, the restaurant—owned by former NFL player Ron Bartell—seats about 75 and pairs exposed brick and warm wood tones with local pop art curated by Red Bull House of Art; a mural behind the bar explains that “Kuzzo” is “a term of endearment for one who is a friend or family member,” and another wall reads “Celebrating Food, Family, & Friends.” The menu centers on Southern-influenced breakfast and lunch with 10 different chicken-and-waffle combinations (notably the Bam Bam, two drumsticks and a waffle, and the First Lady, chicken breast and a waffle), plus omelets, salads and sandwiches; beverages currently include lemonade, sweet tea and Kool-Aid with plans to add craft cocktails, beer and wine. The room already feels lively—friends and staff chat around tables—and the spot drew attention when Mayor Mike Duggan and HUD Secretary Julian Castro stopped by for chicken & waffles; the team is also planning a sun-soaked patio expansion for spring/summer." - Eater Staff
