The Best Montreal Caribbean Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Chef Michael Lafaille may have moved the headquarters for his restaurant to Verdun, but his mission remains the same: Serving honest Haitian food at great prices while making a point out of hiring staff with disabilities — particularly those with sight problems, much like Lafaille, who did a stint at the dining-in-the-dark restaurant O Noir." - JP Karwacki

Restaurants That Opened in Montreal This September | Eater Montreal

"Having dished out griot and plantain burgers at their St. Hubert Plaza location for three years, partners Michael Lafaille and Claudia Fiorilli opened a second Kwizinn outpost in Verdun; they missed terrasse season but have live music every Friday and an updated menu, and although the Verdun spot was meant to be dine-in-only, I note both locations will offer takeout and delivery for the foreseeable future." - Valerie Silva

The Best Restaurants in Montreal’s La Petite-Patrie | Eater Montreal

"If Plaza St Hubert’s ongoing infrastructure upheaval has stopped anyone from venturing to Kwizinn to pick up an excellent burger with a plantain bun and special djon-djon black mushroom rice, they can now order via UberEats. Also on offer: herring kòde patty, tassot cabrit (goat marinated with herbs and spices), and créole lambi (spicy conch meat), plus a decent selection of vegetarian options. Dishes are also available for takeout." - Eater Staff

All the Best Places to Eat Haitian Food in Montreal | Bon Appétit

"Probably the only other restaurant that can rival Agrikol in terms of ambience (and decibel levels—there’s a DJ booth at the front of the restaurant) is Kwizinn Resto-Bar Créole, which opened in 2017 on the Saint-Hubert Plaza in Montreal’s Little Italy. Along with his wife, Claudia Fiorilli, who runs the front-of-house, chef-owner Michael Lafaille offers an eclectic menu with great loads of creative dishes and a killer cocktail list." - ByTerence Trouillot

Google
The best!! The service is always 10/10, the staff is super friendly, attentive and make every visit feel special. The food is consistently amazing, they have such great cocktails, mocktails, and vegetarian options too. I’ve been here many times and it never disappoints. Definitely one of my go to spots and I’ll always keep coming back!

Everything about this restaurant is just WOW! The food is mouth watering; from flavor to presentation and even variety, it was just perfect. Every cocktail I had was gorgeous and well balanced! They even offer tasty mocktails for those who don’t drink. The staff is so kind and the service is quick! Need I mention that there was a soul/jazz band there playing live music?! The ambience is wonderful and I highly recommend for all ages. Would be perfect for a date night or even a night out with friends. A true gem!

This spot is pure vibe! From the moment we walked in, the energy was everything good music, warm lighting, and staff that make you feel like family. The food? Was really good. Every bite is packed with flavour and soul — you can taste the love and energy . The griot was tender, the cocktails were on point( wap sou lol) , and the presentation was dope too. Kwizinn isn’t just a restaurant it’s an experience. Perfect place to eat, laugh, dance a little, and just enjoy life. If you’re looking for somewhere in Montreal with good energy, good people, and food that hits every time, this is THE spot oh and the area too, lovely !. 🔥💃🏾🍹

First time visiting Kwizin since it moved to the Old Port. Wow! Everything!! The service, the atmosphere and most importantly, the food. It was absolutely delicious. The oxtail Jamaican patty is a MUST! Such a flaky dough with a tender and creamy meat filling. The (sweet) homemade ketchup pairs perfectly with it. For the main, we LOVED the plantain burger. Again, the dish is so well thought and balanced. The cheesy sauce adds an amazing flavour and extra moisture, it’s finger licking good. Finally, the beignets were a pleasant surprise. Like a warm crispy donut with a sweet glaze drizzle on the plate. Will definitely go back! Ultimate date spot.

Google
Amazing! Vibe, decor, food, cocktails were all perfect! The octopus carpaccio was absolutely delicious!!! So much so that we went back a second time. It was the BEST dish we had during our stay in Montreal. I’m still thinking about it! We also had the griot which was very flavorful and not too fatty. Highly recommend Kwizinn! You’ll eat well and feel happy doing it!

Incredible diverse food & amazing music (DJ Fly Lady DI)... Unforgettable experience in MTL! Interesting staff, very kind to guests! For my daughter's birthday celebration the table was beautifully decorated with a nice bouquet of flowers and a delicious dessert with a b-day candle. Thank you Kwizinn, we will be back.

At least once a week my husband is craving for their food truck’s lobster tails 😆😆😆omg! Their sandwiches specifically the lobster tail and the Italian pennies are definitely our favorites! Too bad they will be closing their food truck by the end of this month and not until April, we won’t be having our weekly delicious sandwiches 😭

My best friend and I have been to Kwizinn a few times. The welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff always make us feel special from the moment we walk in. The food is amazing 💛 The drinks are amazing ❤️ Service is impeccable 🤎 I was already a huge fan when Kwizinn first opened in Verdun and I'm still a huge fan. Thank you so much for always taking good care of us 🥰

Yelp
This place popped up on Yelp and I definitely wanted to try it. As soon as I reached Montreal, I made my way there for lunch. Didn't need a reservation since it wasn't a busy time. I was seated right away. The place looks super chic. I liked the wood decor. They have music playing in the background. Some days there are DJs in house. I ordered the lakay bob cocktail. Drink was strong. I tasted that alcohol immediately. For my meal, I tried the Jamaican oxtail patty and of course, banann ak morue!!! It's been a minute since I've had this meal so I was excited. The patty was amazing. The dough was light and fluffy. The oxtail was flavorful and blended well. I didnt too much care for the ketchup sauce. Glad it came on the side. The morue was not as expected. It was good overall but I feel like there were more peppers onions than the actual morue. Nice little place to dine with plenty to do around the area. Oh parking may be tough but there is a lot right nearby. Hopefully it isn't full for you.

Yelp
Loved this spot! Right in Old Montreal this restaurant has a combo of Caribbean and Asian fusion. We were lucky enough to try the sushi platter with several different spins on sushi rolls. We got to enjoy jazz music all night and the service was great.

Yelp
We choose an Awesome Chef experience here vs. just a regular restaurant in Montreal with a few inexperienced cooks. The amazing atmosphere, vibes from staff and other guest is worth finding out for yourself. We instantly were taken to memories of Jamaica, Barbados and Curacao beach bars. With DJ's playing Afro beats I got Soul Cafe mix with Cuban party when we came back in the morning for their Afro Beat Vibe Brunch.

Yelp
Had an amazing dinner at Kwizinn! The plantain burger was incredible and the beef pate was perfectly seasoned. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I'd like to give this restaurant a 4, but I just can't. The salad was very heavy on peppers. We ordered the lobster pasta. The lobster was among the best we ever had, but the pasta was clumped together and kind of average. We ordered two of the deserts and they were also rather average. The service was professional and friendly, but it was very slow and the place wasn't that busy. The time to get a drink and the time between courses was too way too long. Not bad for the money, but not great either.

Yelp
Really a 4.5 stars as the food is really good except for the fries. I've never seen fries like that before. I couldn't eat them. The fish tartar is great, the oysters were fresh and tasty and the bottomless mimosas packed a punch. Great location and warm service upon entry and throughout. I'd definitely recommend.

Yelp
I recently had the opportunity of dining at Kwizinn, a charming spot that boasts a beautiful ambiance and a playlist that sets the perfect mood for the evening. The setting itself is inviting--warm lighting, sleek decor, and a cozy yet sophisticated vibe. It's the kind of place you'd want to bring a date or catch up with friends. Let's talk about the food. The appetizers were absolutely fantastic--bursting with flavor and creativity. The oxtail patty was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and paired with a subtle sweet dipping sauce that left me wanting more. The deconstructed sushi roll was refreshing, and the mix of citrusy tang with delicate seafood that was spot on, which my colleagues raved about. The drinks had the pure essence of Caribbean culture that really helped tie in the whole start of the meal. I was definitely excited to see what the main dishes had in store. As for the main dishes, they were a bit of a hit or miss. Some were absolutely delightful, like the griot dish with riz collee and plantain--juicy, rich, and all around complete full meal with good portions. On the other hand, the Picahna dish, while tasty and well cooked, it was lacking on the fullness you'll find in the griot dish. Let's not forget the 4 meat plate dish, that sadly was the most disappointing of all, the chicken served was completely charred than anything and the sides lacked in flavor. For the price it was truly a lost opportunity to really hit the spot. Still, nothing was truly disappointing, but the consistency wasn't quite there, aside from the chicken. Now, what really soured the experience for me was the service. Our waiter, Justin, was incredibly subpar and fairly rude. From the moment we sat down, he seemed disinterested and unapproachable. He was curt with his responses toward us and made no effort to engage or make the meal more enjoyable. There were many moments where he seemed bothered by simple requests, like taking our group picture, and the overall attitude he projected was unpleasant and uncomfortable. To tell a group of people he will only take a single picture of us, truly shows how he did not want to be around our table or have to serve us a minute longer, which was amplified by how little he asked about our drinks or advise us the delay for our desserts. Any questions or follow ups from our end, were met with push back and fake smiles. For a restaurant that otherwise excels in its atmosphere and food (somewhat), this was a huge letdown. In the end, Kwizinn offers a nice varied dining menu if you're looking for delicious appetizers, a solid main course (depending which one you take), and a vibe that's both relaxed and chic. But, I hope they pay more attention to service in the future because it really detracted from what could have been a perfect evening. A little warmth and attentiveness from the staff would go a long way.

Yelp
Arrived a little after the restaurant opened when the traffic was on the low side, so wait time on food wasn't bad Shared between 2 people: Plantain hummus (4/5) - different in a good way, reminded me of a subtle banana pudding flavor Jerk Passion Wings (4.5/5) - tasty, just wish there was more than 3 wings Bao Buns (4/5) - brisket was tender and overall tasty Rice and Peas (3/5) - lacked some flavor Passionfruit Martini (5/5) I would definitely come back again! Overall 4.5/5

Yelp
Food was really good and unique. Never had some of those dishes before! Service was ok. Took awhile to get served but eventually everything was good. Ambiance was so cool!

Yelp
I appreciate how the chef is bringing the Haitian culture for people to experience it, but I think the restaurant caters to the demographic/ area. The dishes are unique but not traditional Haitian dishes. The meals also lacked a LOT of flavor. The restaurant is def a 3 out of 10. I would recommend just sticking to the appetizers because those were the only items that were good. I high recommend the Akra (even tho it's not the trading way of making akra it did have a nice twist to it) and the plantain fries. The Mac & cheese was okay. The cremas was also pretty good! The lambi (conch stew) was VERY DISAPPOINTING! The griot pieces are way too big (they're typically smaller / bite size pieces). All in all it was nice to experience this restaurant but I wouldn't return here again. Definitely try it out for yourself !

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! Made a reservation here for a Sunday night which also had a live Cuban band, Havana Mambo, which was awesome. The staff was lovely, the venue is beautiful, the drinks were great, and the food was AMAZING! Their brunch also looks to be a good time, so would want to come back for that. I HIGHLY recommend for a great time, if you're looking for something fun, different, & delicious, this is the place to go!

Yelp
Cute little Carribean place. We were 2 ppl and we got the shared plate for 2 but it was alot. It was nice to have different stuff on the platter to try but definitely alot to share for 2 ppl, I wish they had told us that the portions are insanely big. The food itself was so good, the only bad part was that the crab was overcooked. They have the meat or the seafood platter that you can chose from, we chose the meat,on the platter we had okra, plantain, griot, lamb, steak, crab, octopus, arrancini, rice, salad and a few dipping sauces. We got mojitos as drinks, the drinks were average If we do go back with will probably be a bigger group to share the platter, or we would get out own plate. Plus it would cost you cheaper if you get your own plate This place was full when we went and it was very noisy you can hear other ppls conversation because everyone was talking to loud and can't really hear the person in from of you. This place is good for big groups I find

Yelp
An enormous disappointment. Food was grim and service was nearly non-existent. After a really long wait, I ordered the goat and a cocktail. While ordering, I asked if they had some really good hot sauce. The server refused to bring me any and said that the dish was already spicy. After another really long wait without my drink being brought or my water being refilled, the runner brought the goat out. I asked about the cocktail and he told me they were still preparing it. The goat was two blocks of meat on ribs, brought out room temperature, sitting in a pool of vinegar with maybe a token shot at some spice. And that was it. No rice, no potatoes, no plantains, no vegetables. Just chunks of room temperature meat sitting in a brown vinegar bath. I did ultimately find one very sad and thin slice of artichoke down in the bottom. Almost as an afterthought. The cocktail finally arrived just as I was ready to chew on the bones. Basically for dessert. The water was never refilled. The meat and cocktail came to $74. The restaurant bills itself as Haitian fusion cuisine, with lots of curious Mexican dishes on the menu such as tamales or else birria made from pork (?), with music in Spanish blaring out the speaker onto the sidewalk. Haitian cuisine can be so phenomenal This wasn't.

Yelp
We went to have Easter brunch at @kwizinnverdun. The early, bright sunlight and the lively, vivid, supereme colour scheme made us feel like we were in the Carribean. But the real reason we just couldn't pass up this morning feast? Lobster. Grilled. Cheese. Yes, it's as good as it sounds. And those puffy, fluffy, pretty, plumpy Japanese pancakes were equally yummy. Add bottomless mimosas and very friendly, prompt service to that and you've got a recipe for a fantastic start to your day.

Yelp
Great service, food, and vibes for Sunday evening dinner with babes... The music and drinks made it a complete deal. The lamb chops as the tapas were tasty. We'll be back.

Yelp
Food in general was quite good and for what you're paying, the portions are definitely very generous. Good for if you're super hungry or sharing. For appetizers, we obviously got the cod accras. They were delicious but I think I like Palme's better. Verdun's were a bit smaller and much softer. Palme's were bigger and had more of a firm bite to them, and were a bit saltier (pleasantly so.) Both were nice and spicy, but the Palme's were spicy from the sauce while Verdun's accras were spicy themselves and accompanied by this delicious tart and buttery sauce. It's up to your preference, but I like almost all accras I come across! My partner got the jerk chicken, which I had a little bite of. Was good but not outstanding, but chicken was moist and fresh which is a big plus. I got the griots--very good, loved the fatty parts which were nicely fried and browned. With the rice though it was a bit dry, had to take a lot of bites with the kale to moisten it up, which meant the kale was finished quite quickly. There was a sauce that came with as well, which was good (not too salty--the griot was seasoned well enough so this was nice) but still not enough of it to moisten every bite on the plate and a bit watery. You could always ask for more though! But I wonder if the chefs don't think it's too dry? Service was pleasant and there was live music which my partner really enjoyed.

Yelp
I would always order from kwizinn at work for lunch, but this was my first experience at the restaurant. It was so great that within one week we went twice. The cocktails are amazing and well done. Now let's talk about the food: OH MY GOWWD!!! I'm Caribbean and I'm telling you that I've never had such tender "griot" I can still taste it while writing this. It's totally worth the trip. And I recommend this place.

Tina S.

Yelp
Kwizinn old port is a definite must. Food was delicious. Exceeded expectations both the food and the cocktails. The waiter was professional and very helpful. The ambiance was just perfect. We were there for jazz night.

Yelp
Been to this place recently and love the atmosphere. The food portions are huge though, I mean we rolled out from the place with bellies full of delicious food. If you like spicy sauces and I mean SPICY SPICY, then ask for their spicy sauce, but beware, it's for those who can handle really hot hot food, not for the beginners. Their service was great and the ambiance is very chill. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
The food was excellent and the owner was very friendly. Came all the way from Massachusetts to try.

Yelp
Where do I start? Well I have no pics as proof cause honestly there was no time for all of that lol. I got straight to business when my food came out. Let's start with their new location in Verdun, nice modern take to a Haitian vibe with the black art and tropical vibe definitely makes you feel like you are about to partake in the real authentic experience. I had the Cornish hen, djon rice and sweet plantain and let me say..... nothing felt closer to a home cooked meal than this. It was absolutely delicious and prepared with love! You can tell! On top of watching this family of owners all working together to make that experience top tier. Was quite the night. Service was great from the moment we were seated, I always judge based on how fast I am presented with water and a menu! That's bare minimum in my eyes, I'm ok with everything else taking time. But for a table of 7 our drinks and food all came out in a well thought out order and fast! We ordered a little bit of everything on the menu and not one thing disappointed. For a first time experience there I am beyond ecstatic to go back and would recommend to anybody who wants value for their money to give this place a shot! 5 stars but I would definitely give them more if I could.
