L'Épuisette

"An “épuisette” is a child’s fishing net, often forgotten on the rocks by the seashore and this establishment enjoys a matchless waterside location on the fishing port of the Vallon des Auffes. The house’s iconic “Fanny” menu is as dazzling as the July sunshine. The chef knows his business: the produce is flawlessly fresh, the recipes meticulous and the flavours distinctive – all of which with lashings of generosity. We sampled a bouillabaisse of capon, monkfish, galinette, weever and John Dory – to die for! A delicious port of call." - Michelin Inspector

Incredible nice restaurant just a little bit outside the bustling city center. We opted for a 9 course menu and enjoyed every single course. The service was very attentive and the sommerlier did an amazing job suggesting pairing wines. I will definitely come back

Highly recommended to have your lunch here. L’Epuisette is a restaurant right next to Mediterranean Sea. You can see Château d'If by the window seats. The service was nice. We are from Taiwan and waitress said “你好” to us with smile. And the most remarkable was their Aspic of Bouillabaisse which was a aspic reach of the flavor of Bouillabaisse. The second remarkable was “Red mullet, cooked and raw Tomato water and Kimchi butter.” We are from Asia and familiar with Kimchi. I must say this was the best Kimchi dish. The flavor was balanced and really tasty. It was out of the way how Asian use Kimchi in dishes. Really surprised. And the red mullet was cooked perfectly. Finally, the petit four cart was cute. You can choose anything you wanted. Reasonable price, high quality cooking, beautiful sea view.

On a summer sunny day, L’Epuisette was the ideal venue for a lunch by the seaside. Came for the views of the seawater pool through the floor to ceiling windows, left in love for the bouillabaisse menu. Served in 3 difference dish, as a mousse, a soup with croutons and as 5-fish filets in sauce, this iconic and flavorful seafood dish is a must for everyone visiting Marseille. I found myself thinking how this restaurant or then-kiosk by the sea would have been decades and decades ago… times go by, cuisine evolve, only the sea remains the same.

The restaurant has an interesting location almost in the water. It really is a seafood restaurant - the Michelin Guide marked it as offering vegetarian options but this cannot be recommended, they simply leave out the fish, often without adjusting the quantity of the rest. I had a regular tasting menu with fish and enjoyed a few clever surprises such as the cocoa seafood foam and the shrimp with its exquisite texture but I cannot say that overall I was wowed - this week I've eaten at several restaurants "only" featuring a Big Gourmand in the Michelin guide that honestly seemed worthier of a star. If you come here during the dark season, lunch probably is best as you then can enjoy what must be a spectacular view of the sea.

The ambiance here is amazing. A beautiful view of the ocean and little islands. The service was 10/10 and the presentation of the food 10/10. The drink selection 10/10. However, compared to other seafood Michelin star restaurants I’ve been to I’d give the seafood 8.5/10. I thought the restaurant could have had a better fish selection, sauces, and taste. However, the desserts and cheese were 9.5/10 and had a great selection. But I’m no chef. Overall when you consider the amazing ambiance and service. It is well worth coming here for a visit. I really enjoyed my time here, service, and the food.

Five stars on the services top notch service for everything. The view is perfect and the atmosphere is top. The food is good, but for the price we paid and to be a Michelin star restaurant, I think it could be better. We ate a 7 course meal. We ordered the Bouillabaisse (local dish). I don't mind small portion, which is expected in this kind of place, but the flavours could have been better. Three of our seven meals course tasted like the fish supplement I feed my turtle with. I understand the original bouillabaisse is a fish based soup, but they shouldn't repeat the after taste of their meal with that canned fish flavor. The fish by itself was delicious, but some of the ingredients had a fish based condiment my palate didn't appreciate much The View: 5/5 The Service: 5/5 The Food: 3/5

We decided to book a table for our 5th anniversary and we were not disappointed. The setting is mind blowing. If you’re going to book a table make sure to check what time is sunset and try to get one by the window. Service was excellent. We chose the 7 course menu, it was a delight, especially the octopus one. Dishes are not extremely surprising but each element of the dish is sophisticated at its maximum and it can be enjoyed individually. The wine menu is extensive. We chose a local 100 eur wine and it was great. Fruity and very pleasant. Prices are very reasonable, around 200 per person.

We had the Marius set menu for lunch. The food was ok but definitely not worth a Michelin one-star status. The protagonist of the menu is Bouillabaisse but by the forth dish, it gets a bit boring and uninspiring. The Rock fish soup is too salty for our taste and we had to take it with bread to balance it out. The main course, different types of fish poached in soup, is no good; fish was overcooked and had no flavor that you would expect from fresh fish. The soup which the fish is soaked in too similar to the rock fish soup (or is the same?) they served in previous course. The soup’s taste was strong and too salty that it overshadowed whatever little flavor that was in the fish. The two courses were basically the same, except for the fish added to it. The dessert from the trolley are all no good either. The staffs were standoffish and pretentious. They had a “get-down-to-business’ attitude and had prioritized the food’s presentation than caring about the customers. Despite the beautiful view, we did not find the atmosphere relaxing nor the lunch enjoyable.

Yelp
For my last meal in France, I stayed in Marseille for a day specifically for this Marseille Fish Soup, and the anticipation was very high, and after eating it I would rate it at the British level of fish pie making. In the photos of bouillabaisse online, there are big fish chunks and vegetable chunks in the soup, but the one served in this shop is liquid with only very small residues in it. The soup is a bit salty, a bit too salty to drink directly, but it is good to eat with bread. The fish used to stew the soup will be fried later and served as the main dish. This one is really delicious. The fish is very tender but not raw. It is the best in the whole meal.

Yelp
I had one of the most delightful times of my life during my "bringing a baby to fine dining experiences for my own amusement" era. Of all the highly ranked restaurants, this one has the nicest high chairs I have ever seen in my life. A true piece of art. Although, for those who are wondering, babies are not great dinner companions and do not enjoy their time here. Good riddance, don't bring them. The plates and cheese cart are truly excellent here as well.

Yelp
We had such an amazing time eating here at this beautiful sea side location. Everything was exquisit. We decided on the testing menu with wine, and man, we were taken on one the most mouth watering journey we've ever been on, and we have dined at some of the best places in the world. The Scallops with Cauliflower Cream was my favorite moment.

Yelp
Tres bien. Service was good. Food was delicious-fresh and tasty. It was dark when we were there and overcast, so we didn't get to enjoy the view as much as some others. Recommend and would go back.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant! Great food with high quality! My husband and I ordered Bouillabaisse and tasting menu A. All the food was very yummy and the restaurant provided complementary appetizers and desserts. :) The restaurant is at a nice location with sea view and the setting was romantic. Service was very good and friendly. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Best meal I have ever had. The service was exceptional. Friendly, never missed a beat. We had the fish soup, then five different types of fish on a platter with tiny fried potatoes swimming in a sauce from the fish. A bottle of white wine which the sommeliere recommended. This was followed by a tray of cheeses which my sister had several choices of and luckily I tasted and had a few bites. Last but not the least was a dessert of sweet strawberries and a tiny little tart with a strawberry sauce. Also a dollop of almond milk sorbet. Then there was a cup of espresso with tiny treats of macarons, small chocolates with a plaid coating, and a tiny marshmallow. The staff could not have been more friendly, professional or kind to us. The views are spectacular, the ambience of the restaurant from the decor to the glasses superb. If you enjoy food and great service please try this restaurant. Amuse bouche consisted of a tiny triangle of pate in pastry, a carrot mouse in a different pastry shell and a play on our forthcoming dish of bouillabaisse that consisted of a saffron infused potato slice topped by a fish flavored mousse covered in a glaze. An assortment of varied flavored rolls accompanied our luncheon.

Yelp
Beautiful view. Inaccurate information. Even when we asked and made it clear we needed to order a la carte, we were not given choice options on the menu except for 3,5 or seven course meal... for lunch... during the week!!! When our group decided to leave they then relented to give us access to the a la carte menu...too late!! My guests had left! I was unable to take more than 2 sips of my water- cost... 25€ Inflexible!! I would not recommend for a business lunch. Will not go back...

Yelp
the true bouillabaise! everything you thought you knew about bouillabaise is wrong... if you are american and have never tried the real deal in provence, that is. and if you are going to make the effort, you may as well go all out and go for the best. enter l`epuisette. set among picturesque mediterannean seaside cliffs, the food is as exquisite as the view. at least the bouillabaise and the desserts, that's what wakako u. and i had. you will part with at least 150 euros, and that's just for dinner and wine. but i dare say it is worth it, for as hunter s. thompson said, anything worth doing's worth doing right! you can taste the mediterannean in every sumptuous spoonful of sublime broth, and the fish are fresh out of same sea. no shellfish; that would be a sin. speaking of sin, the deserts are pure sinful decadence, worth every cent of the 20 euros they will each set you back. a very well-deserved michelin star!

Yelp
Definitely one of the best I had in marseille! Tried the 5 courses meal (€95/person not including drinks and wines). It was technically 7 courses if include the petits fours. Started with a monk fish, then tuna with foi gras(the foie gras was SO smooth and GOOD), scallop with cauliflower cream, then end with 2 deserts (the lime foam was lovely). Overall speaking its a 9.5/10 (found the food a little bit too salty) but other than that everything else is PERFECT! Spectacular view and dining atmosphere!

Yelp
Very disappointing! The location was lovely. Service was impeccable, especially that offered by the sommelier. The high prices were commensurate with the restaurant's one (undeserved) Michelin star; the quality was not. The food was, at best, mediocre. We've spent two months in France and had many restaurant meals; those were, with only one other exception, uniformly good; a few were sublime. We had the "Marseilles" menu, the centerpiece of which was an "updated" bouillabaisse; every course, including that, was presented pretentiously but bland, under seasoned and not fresh tasting. The dessert, a pineapple "cannelloni", was awful but an appropriate coda to a meal distinguished only by its 240€ cost.
