"Opened by Luigi Manze, Michaele’s brother, in 1929, L. Manze on Walthamstow High Street is one of London’s most attractive pie shops in terms of interior. Run by the Manze family until 1970, the grade-II listed building has a terrazzo floor, marble table tops and booth seating. As for the food, pies are available in two sizes and although they’re some of the city’s more expensive, they’re also some of the best on offer." - Jonathan Hatchman

Going to L.Maze to eat PIE & MASH was an experience, especially since the restaurant has been open since 1929. The decor is lovely and gets you back in time. However to my palet food wasn't tasty- but that's because I like more spices in my food. Beware no toilets facilities!!

Google
Cool place as it's a listed original pie and mash shop opened in the 1920s. Traditional London food friendly efficient service and amazing original decor. Sure to be on the list of trendy places to hang out soon. Down side, as in most English places, no toilet facility otherwise highly recommend this as an East End experience.

After reading some great reviews on google about this place i had to try it out. Whilst the interior is amazing (see photos ) I was really disappointed to be served what essentially was a school meal. Although it wasn't 'bad' per se, I had hoped for something better than what tasted like pasty, out of the pack powder mash with a generic gravy and slightly above average pie. 2.5/5 on account of the lovely decor and above average service.

Google
I was attracted by the hot eel but I have no luck that the restaurant didn’t serve any for today. I ordered a pie and mash but it didn’t taste good for me. The interior design is nice but the food couldn’t attract me to have a second visit here.

Google
Lovely place, beautiful building and friendly staff. The pie was not as deep-filled as I’d hoped, and they used mince instead of chunks of meat, but the pastry was lovely, so was the mash and the eel “liquor”, which is basically a gravy 👍🏽

Google
Great Decor.....(2 stars) waxy mash, tasteless liquor and pies full of gristle first time in 40yrs i have not finished. Thought it was the same great Manze as in Tower Bridge Road and Peckham but it is not. Tower Bridge Road is M. Manze, this one L.Manze...... If you have never eaten Pie n Mash and want to to give it a go, try M. Manze, or Arments Walworth Road equally great.

Best pie n' mash I've eaten so far. The pastry had fantastic crispy texture, the filling was just right, the liquor was really nice and the mash was absolutely delicious and well seasoned. I will definitely be back regularly!

Yelp
if you are a Pie & Mash lover visiting East London put this place on your bucket list Manze's truly is the best Pie & Mash I have tried, with a traditional feel to the interior. For years we have had lunch here whilst doing our last minute shop on Xmas eve. It's our start to Christmas. you'll not be disappointed.

Yelp
I love to eat Asian food while ignoring the good and hearty cockney food from my background. Yeah I was born within the bells... Unlike some who think any Londoner can be a cockney! Well L Manzes is situated on the High street which also houses a fabulous street Market. Seriously this place is a treasure in London because it has some of the best preserved interiors and shopfronts in London. It's the real deal not some fake Victoriana! Anyway back to the food, there is not much choice as it's mainly various petmutations of jellied eels, mash and pies. I don't care for the look of eels in jelly. But I chose a large pie (choice of steak and onion or steak and kidney) served with mash and parsley liquor. The pie was meaty with lovely mashed potatoes with a generous serving of parsley sauce. Luvverly jubbly! I'm on the dog and bone to tell everyone about this little gem in the east.....

Yelp
Okay so I'm a fan because of the culture involved. L. Manze is the oldest pie shop in London and people travel from far and wide to visit. I, of course, could not let such a culture experience go un-visited. I can't speak about price or taste as this was my first and only pie and mash experience. However, compared to other foods the favour was bland and the price seemed average. Needless to say, I am not the biggest fan of pie and mash. This may not be L Manze's fault, but personal taste. The venue is quite cool as it still has an old charm with black and white tiled floor and booths for seating! Overall, I would recommended that people visit L Manze if they actually like pie and mash or would like a British culinary experience.

Yelp
This is the world famous Pie'n'mash shop much loved by ex-pat Londoners, (google it, you'll see) Proper cockney, it's hardly changed in my lifetime or my mums (she's 78) Still has the marble and mirrors, but thankfully not the stall outside where a man in a bloody apron butchered live eels! The pies are delicious, and the mysterious green liquor (to be mixed with vinegar) added to mashed potatoes make a feast fit for a (Pearly) king. They also sell jellied eels, an acquired taste, and sweet pies and custard, if you need a dessert. If you crave a bit of Cockney nostalgia, this is the best!

Yelp
I've been going to this branch of Manze's for as long as I can remember. Mum used to take me as a baby even and that was 65 years ago. The food is great, and so is the ambience. Friendly, cheerful staff also make this a great place to eat. It is also terrific value. Back in the day there used to be queues outside during the busy times, (I'm talking 1950s/1960s here.) it still gets busy at certain times, but that is part of the fun. Like another reviewer, it was a great treat to have the pie, mash and liquor on Christmas Eve during that last minute shopping. It really is a huge part of the famous Walthamstow High Street scene, and one of the last remaining original icons of this famous street.

Yelp
This is an amazing resturant, the mash is really creamy and the pie are amazing. This is by far the worlds best pie n mash shop! Being its world famous this shop does get very busy! So make sure you leave plenty of time.

Yelp
not too bad, though not in my opinion in the same league as manze's bermondsy, cookes's in broadway market cookes's hoxton st market. and all pale into incignificants compared to the old cookes's in kingsland high st in dalston, sadly no longer in existance. if i had to pick a current champion , it wiuld be hoxton st market !!!!!

Qype User (Gooner…)

Yelp
The best in London, after the sad demise of Cookes' on Kingsland Road.
