Atmospherically, this place is nailing it. Cute colors, cute tables, cozy chairs. And the staff is lovely and well-trained. I've had drinks here before and the bar is DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT.
The food is mediocre and expensive, but it's a great choice for an air-conditioned (inside) Italian option on Larchmont.
But then things took a turn.
The previous Italian restaurant (in this spot) made a DELICIOUS lemon pasta. Reminiscing about it makes me miss Steve and his whole family. I ate there once a week. How excited I was to see lemon pasta on this menu as well!
BUT IT HAS CAPERS. Seems like an overwhelming choice for a light lemon summer pasta, but I digress. I am unfortunately allergic to capers. I asked the server if she could leave them off. She said no. I asked if they were already precooked in the sauce. She said no, the chef plans the recipes to his exact specifications how he wants the dishes to taste, AND that I was welcome to order a different pasta if I "didn't want" capers. I asked her to ask the chef if he'd make an exception for an allergy. She did (allegedly), and he said no. I warned her there would be a review.
I understand chefs truly caring about their creations, and that's awesome. Everybody loves THE BEAR. But I do not understand an average neighborhood restaurant not being able to withhold sprinkling a few death capers for a customer who was really looking forward to lemon pasta.
Plus the entire exchange put me in a foul mood. I was trying to show my friend a nice time in Larchmont, and now he thinks it's stuffy and boring.
I got the Cacio e Pepe instead. It was very edible, but certainly not a stand-out dish. And the portion was very small, especially for $22. I ate it all in about 5 bites. I would have ordered something else, but I was too miffed. My friend said his pasta was good, but nothing to about which to brag. He wasn't full either. Also, our water was not refilled.
We paid and sat to chat a little longer (there were only a few other people inside, plenty of free tables). While I appreciate that they didn't mind us staying, they also didn't offer us more water, or pop by to see if we needed anything else.
All in all this is too pricey of a restaurant to have an unpleasant experience, and not nearly expensive or delicious enough to enforce ridiculous recipe rules. I nearly expected to see Olivia Coleman walk out (had she, I might have made an exception).
Angelini on Beverly is far superior.
