Barra Review - Union Square - Boston - The Infatuation

"There's a wide variety of mezcal and sotol to choose from at Barra, a small Mexico City-inspired bar and restaurant in Union Square. If you’re interested in learning about those drinks, there’s probably no better place to do so in Boston - the sipping flights are a respectable $24 each. The food, on the other hand, is a little pricey (two tacos for $16, for instance). We appreciate the house-made blue corn tortillas and cured beef, but the smaller portions make eating here feel more like a snack than a full dinner." - Joel Ang

Google
Fun place with great food and fun it's-an-event style drinks. Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff! It's unfortunate they allow smoking, though. Our "non-smoking" table was right next to two smoking groups. Not exactly a smoke free meal.

Google
One of the best places for a long business lunch in Mexico City. Amazing service, out of this world food and extensive wine selection. Their steaks, tacos and appetizers are fresh and super authentic. Our server made excellent food and wine recommendations. Love this place!

Lucas Ribeiro

Google
Upscale restaurant, but with overpriced food for the quality and to-be-seen atmosphere. Not a lot of gluten free options. Starters were good, octopus and fries not that much

Google
ok the food was good but tell me why there was a guy in the bathroom helping people wash their hands and everything. like, it was his literal job. he had a tip box and everything. a lil akward…😐

Google
Great authentic Mexican food in the Polanco area, very recommended if you are in Mexico City 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Google
From start to finish, this place was incredible. The food was bursting with flavor, and the vibe made the whole experience feel fun and welcoming. Our server gave fantastic recommendations, and the service overall was attentive without being overbearing. Even with our limited Spanish, the staff was gracious and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Highly recommend — we’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
A hip rooftop bar/restaurant with great music and vibes. Plenty of service staff ready to respond. We had classic Mexican but could clearly see the grilled meats are really popular at other tables. Enjoyed every dish which were cooked in a refined yet authentic way. The tequila was also very smooth. Ask for recommendations- there are just too many choices!

Google
An amazing evening for the whole family. Great food, drinks and entertainment.

Yelp
Service was great. The Kobe taco was delicious and presentation was also a plus. Enjoy the restaurant highly recommended.

Yelp
This is a great place for people that want to spend money and eat good meat in Mexico City. The service is amazing. Five star service. The presentation of the food is also very good. It is a awesome visual and a gustatory experience. Or vegetarians like me, Whole Foods plant-based people, the vegetables could have been a good option. They looked very greasy when my family ordered them so I didn't try them as I cannot eat things but our family were happy. The ambience is very loud. the music crowd talking Was a bit too much. I had to step out for a little bit to destress from the noise.

Yelp
Restaurant was a fantastic time but I got food poisoning from something I ate. No Bueno.

Yelp
I came here for my birthday while visiting Mexico City for the first time. One word: Exquisite! We made reservations for 9 and were seated promptly with a beautiful view of the city. The inside was dim yet lively. The service was impeccable. The waitstaff were on point! The food...oh my! The Ribeye on a salt block was honestly the best steak I've ever had! The longer it sat on the block, the better! The Cedar plank salmon was also stellar! We added a side mashed potatoes and shelled corn which were great accompaniments to the entrees. When back in Mexico City this place will be my go to!

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, good food, good service. Restaurant is on the higher end but the food tasted good and the portions were big.

Yelp
Best tacos we had in the city! The mini ribeye tacos are a must try! There's 8, and aren't that mini. Sooo good, so simple, yet full of flavor! We also had the ribeye tacos which were delicious as well. Then killed the ribeye over salt block. We left so full and satisfied! It is the priciest place we went to, but wouldn't hesitate to go back. Service was good and it had a fancy vibe. #2

Yelp
The food was ok. But if you're AMERICAN check your bill closely!!!! They charge you a IFA tax. We spoke to the manager, said couldn't take it off.

Yelp
One of my favorite places. Everything was excellent. The food was AMAZING. The absolute best guayaba cheesecake I've ever had. The ambiance lifts the mood of the place. We were hyped and happy to be here. Even tho it was a full house we still felt like we were hitting elbows with the table next to us. We were not rushed and the service is top notched. This will be a definite go to from now on.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed coming here! The service was wonderful, and the food that much better! Of the items we had, I don't think there was anything we disliked. The queso fundido was delicious! The mini rib eye tacos were a hit, particularly with the salsas they bring to the table. For the star of the night, the rib eye on the Himalayan salt with mezcal! Wow. It was beautifully cooked, and it was definitely a nice little show to watch. I can still taste the butter they put on top...so so good! The dessert was really good too. They bring the churro wheel to the table with sugar you can put them in and accompanied with chocolate and caramel. I personally preferred the guayaba cheesecake. The guayaba taste was there, and so so good.

Yelp
My former boss forced me to join him here multiple times. At first, it wasn't my favorite place, but then it started to wear on me. The ambiance is not casual, but not too classy either. The music is almost always set to get you to prepared to go clubbing, but the same is true for most nice restaurants in the Polanco neighborhood. (I'll never understand this). The cedar plank salmon is my consistent go-to entree here, and the tuna tartare always proves to be a wise starter. Most of my dinner mates usually lean toward the steaks, which appear far from the best option in the neighborhood, but I've been here with groups as small as 2 and large as 20 and nobody has ever left disappointed. This is one of the few restaurants in Polanco where you should probably make a reservation. It tends to fill up fast, especially on weekends.

Yelp
Delicious and fun! Great soundtrack. The Service was perfect and the ambience was way cool. My favorite part was the whiskey cart.

Yelp
Súper fun drinks, we had such a fun time here, food as well as drinks were nice, we will come back to try more dishes

Yelp
One of my favorite go-to restaurants in CDMX. The service is one of the best I've experienced. The attention, the atmosphere, the food is outstanding. Getting here is somewhat of a challenge, but it Mexico City, parking is never easy here. But make reservations, hopefully you'll get a great spot. Get the Irish Coffee, it is an experience, WOW! Thank you, Issac!))) The food here is fantastic, desserts are great, the service...I am without words! You guys get 6 stars!)))

Yelp
Awesome and upscale restaurant up on the rooftop in Polanco, Mexico City! Ambiance/Service: The place is super hopping, good music, great vibe, and the decor is on point. The service staff is absolutely on it and by the time you need something, they are there and helping you! Food/Drinks: We went with some local friends and they recommended we do the bottle service. They were absolutely right. Bottle service in Mexico is not like the states and is much cheaper as they do not gouge you with crazy bottle prices. And you can get a ton of different mixes to accompany your liquor and the staff were there filling our glasses anytime we ran out. We ended up ordering appetizers to share rather than going with large entrees. The steak/guacomole was out of this world good! We also had the crab tacos which were definitely a different experience and extremely good! We also did the octopus which was extremely delicious. We had the grilled artichoke which is the only one we wouldn't order again. Would definitely come back and absolutely get the steak/guacomole, crab tacos, and octopus, no question! Note: You do want to make reservations to this place, especially if you have a lot of people as this place does get very busy.

Yelp
Peor servicio que hemos tenido en la ciudad de mexico como turistas, no recomiendo este lugar, los meseros muy maleducados y las bebidas malísimas. Hay mejores lugares en la ciudad de mexico

Yelp
I gotta go with the 5 on this one for the all around experience - fun atmosphere, excellent service, great drinks, delicious food! Atmosphere: happening spot with lots of people, and a DJ playing music. We went on a Tuesday at 9:30, which was a good time to go if you're hoping to experience the lively scene. Service: though this is a loud hip spot, service feels as if you're in a fine-dining luxury restaurant. Alejandro was our sever and he was excellent. He even looked up places for us to go and made some great recommendations. Food: if you eat meat gotta get steak here! It comes sizzling on a hot stone, medium rare - but you can let it sit and cook if you like it more done. There are tons of options. We got the Himalayan steak but just ask your server for recs. Charred Broccoli is a must for side! Guacamole is great for apps as is the flaming cheese with chorizo. We also got the avocado salad, it was ok, a little over-dressed. Desserts are also great! We had the molten chocolate cake and ice cream per our waiters recommendation. The table next to us went for the red Velvet which is prepared table-side, looked amazing! Drinks: cocktails, wine and mezcal oh my! It's so hard to choose so we had a little bit of each! Yes, it was a fun night. You can choose your cocktails from an iPad with pictures and descriptions. Everything we had was good, again you can ask your server for help choosing!

Edward R.

Yelp
It almost seemed like I was being judged by how I was dressed. They also kept sitting people, whereas I had to wait, wait and wait some more. It took over an hour for them to finally sit me. The food was ok, but the drinks were good.

Sergio H.

Yelp

Yelp
Travel from outside of town... great dinner spot. Amazing drink menu and food was incredible.

Yelp
This place is one of the top restaurants in Polanco. The service and the food is top notch. It is on the pricier side but totally worth it. It's on the top floor with a great terrace overlooking Polanco. While you wait they offer you complimentary beer. The service is top notch, at times we had four waiters attending us at the same time. They have a great selection of Mexican wines. Their steaks are superb! We had the guacamole with chicharrón (pork grinds), the steak barbacoa, rib eye cooked in salt and octopus. Everything was excellent. They also offer great cocktails and some are made right at your table. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Reservations are highly recommended specially nights and weekends.

Yelp
Great seafood restaurant in the high-end district of Mexico City. The restaurant is known for their seafood and what we ordered lived up to its name. We came on the Saturday night and the many dinner reservations and people waiting in line reflected the popularity of the place. As a party of two we didn't have to wait too long for our table even though we came earlier than our reservation time. At the beginning of the meal they have a complementary salsa set with five kinds of salsa for for you to try. be careful, A couple of them are very spicy! We had the grilled vegetables platter and the grilled salmon for two. The grilled vegetables platter came out on the sizzling hot plate piled high with artichokes, zucchini, carrots, beets, tomato and cauliflower. The vegetables were thrilled to perfection and as a set on the hot stone the sides continued to caramelize making every bite delicious and sweet. The grilled salmon was basted in a sweet honey like sauce and grilled to perfection, tender and rich. A very lovely experience, Great for coming on a date night or with family!

Yelp
For the concurrence I could notice this is one of the "in" spots in Polanco. What is with the Gin carts in restaurants nowadays? It's like if you were attending a party with the magician visiting your table. They'll make the Gin throw smoke, put flowers/natural plants as decoration, they'll add a performance with the most picky way I've seen to pour and put ice in a glass (I felt like clapping). An amazing discovery was the Mexican wine named: "Pies de Tierra". The decoration is fancy. The service was amazing. It's the kind of place in where the Mexican high society likes to being seen, criticizes, makes business, flirts, enjoys. The terrace was delightful, the drawback: dudes were smoking cigars...
google avatar

Marcus P.

Yelp
The meal here was outstanding. The service was great. The atmosphere was also outstanding. Can't wait to come back for another meal.
google avatar

Cher W.

Yelp
We had a reservation but still had to wait 20 minutes. The seating was overly crowded and do not go if you are allergic to smoke as we were surrounded by smokers. It is also very loud. The food and service was good. The Buenna red wine was very good. There are sooo many delicious restaurants in Mexico City for far less money.
google avatar

Merve C.

Yelp
If you are in Polanco around lunch or dinner time you have to check out their patio and enjoy a delicious meal! Every place will bring chips and salsa in MX but this place offers the best tray of sauces with variety of spice level. They are very interactive with the orders, they make a big show by your table for some entrees drinks and desserts. The Steak show by our table was pretty impressive with the flames and special cuts. Red velvet dessert was the perfect ending to this delicious meal.
google avatar

Yelp
Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. If you're a tourist. I told them we don't eat pork, but they still have us food with pork. Then they charged me for it and still asked for a tip. They have an English menu but it doesn't describe what's in the entrees. The servers don't speak English. This place is way too expensive for the quality of food. I would never ever go back. What a joke for service.

Yelp
Tender, perfectly seasoned slices of steak cooked at the table?!? That's pretty much all I had to know to lure me to La Buena Barra. Located on the second floor of a building with great outdoor and indoor seating, LBB has to offer the best steak I have tasted in a long time. In typical steakhouse style, the restaurant decor is dimly lit, romantic and full of dark woodsy colors. The wine cellar is huge and most of the decor is monogrammed with the initials "BB". I'm a big fan of monograms so the restaurant may have received an extra star just for those! We began our dining experience by first ordering wine and I have to highlight that they bring you an iPad where you can read about all the wines they offer and even use filters to narrow down your selection. Super cool! For appetizer we ordered the melted cheese with chorizo. I am a fan of all things chorizo so this appetizer, paired with warm flour tortillas, definitely hit the spot. For dinner my mom and I shared the house specialty - the caña de filete al mezcal. Wowwwwww! What else can I possibly say about a huge slab of steak brought to the table on a hot stone slab made from Himalayan salt that is sliced and seasoned in front of you and then drizzled with mezcal?!? It was visually cool and very delicious. And just when you think that the filete could not be beat, you order dessert and that also blows your mind. Be prepared to wait about 25-30 minutes, but the red velvet cake that is made to order is a must try. Topped with creamy mousse and caramelized popcorn it is a great way to end dinner.

Gustavo G.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. To start, we have a reservation that wasn't respected. On top of that, the manager (his name is Israel) came to our table to inform us that they were closing the area so we need it to leave and "have a cigarette" in a rude manner. I had been in their restaurant in Monterrey and I was surprised how different the treatment to customer was. I will definitely never comeback to this place.
google avatar

Sonia P.

Yelp
This is one of my fave place to eat in Mexico City. We came here on a Saturday night for dinner, we called ahead and they said they were full. We figured we just gonna come anyway and tried our luck, we got seated right away. Chips and variety of salsa are complimentary. The ambiance is classy and they play loud music. Can be a bit chilly inside the restaurant since they have an outdoor patio. And yes they have an english menu! What we ordered (all highly recommended): 1. Cheese Flambe (grilled melted cheese) 2. Noodle soup (this is dry noodle with tomato sauce and no soup, still good) 3. Crab tacos (super delicious) 4. Grilled vegetables (massive size veggies like carrots, zucchinis, beets, caulliflowers) 5. Beef Fillet with butter 750g on a hot stone (good size for 4 people), super delicious and a must have. They have an individual portion as well.

Yelp
Celebrated a birthday here. Terrific restaurant. Very attentive staff with excellent serving standards. The food was amazing and the drinks delicious. It was a little loud for my taste, but it definitely felt like there was a frenetic energy about the place.
google avatar

Suleiman Y.

Yelp
Service is poor. Disorganized and not welcoming at all. A lot better places in the city to spend your money.

Simon T.

Yelp
Came here for dinner. Ordered the sea bass( catch of the day), bone marrow, octopus, beef cut, and crab taco, a few cocktails. Everything was great. My favorite was softshell crab taco. If you love crab, I highly recommend it. Would definately come back.
google avatar

Mario A.

Yelp
Excellent little place for a respite an a long afternoon stroll along the surrounding area. Their mixologist was awesome. She prepared me a citrus-infused cocktail that was chilled to the bone with liquid nitrogen--good 'till the last drop--I had me two, just to make sure the first one was not a fluke! The coconut shell ceviche with jicama was absolutely an oasis in the sultry afternoon. Their salsa presentation and mini soup cup were astoundingly good. The ambiance is inviting and fresh. If, however, you have a problem with smoke odor, which I typically do when I'm trying to determine the substance of a flavor, do not ask to be seated outside by the terrace--that's the smoking section.
google avatar

Antonio R.

Yelp
Had a great meal and awesome service while in DF. My meal was an excellent mixture or traditional and new flavors of Mexican food with a great presentation.

Fernando P.

Yelp
Excellent use of quality products, great culinary techniques and creativity!! Fantastic service and attention to details makes this a must when visiting Polanco. Great display of on table finishes! Highly recommended!
google avatar

Rj M.

Yelp
This place is loud! If your objective is to have a nice dinner conversation with your party, this is not your place. However, if you like to eat and have a live DJ playing music all night, this is your place. I give the food and service four stars but overall three as it was just to hard to enjoy a meal and chat.
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
For sure one of the best restaurants in Mexico City for me! The Hospitality is incredible, their proboleta is amazing and their selection of fresh fish is never disappointing. Every time I go to Mexico City I visit them.

Mark P.

Yelp
A carnivore's dream! Had a giant slab of ribeye that looked like a loaf of bread, then sliced with shrimp in between and flamed with mezcal. Outstanding. Octopus, bone marrow, grilled veggies, salad and unbelievable desserts. Service was impeccable.

Alex M.

Yelp
Really disappointed. The food is fine but nothing special. Better food a several other restaurants in Monterrey, La Nacional and los Hidalgos to name a couple. What really turned me off and made me feel taken advantage of was the service. #1 Ordered the ribeye with Himalayan salt (instead of the regular ribeye) for 80 pesos more. Ribeye arrives with no salt layer as promised. In passing the waiter mentions that the salt crust was removed prior to serving it. Ok, could make sense... however, 20 mins later the same steak arrives at another table with the crust and the Head waiter, in quite a show, removes it in and cuts the steak for all to see and then serves it to the guest. What??? When we asked about why we had not received the same service the waiter said he would check and never returned. Would have left it at that and taken their word that in fact I had received the correct steak... except for #2 which really led to me even leaving this review #2 when the check came I was asked about leaving a tip. I specified an amount and despite that they charged 15%. Really???? Well now really upset. Told them about the steak for which they had no explanation. No attempt to do anything to make things right. Gave us a phone number to call for the next time we went. While I don't live here my in-laws live in Monterrey, nobody will be going back. again

Robes P.

Yelp
You're paying for the terrace and the ambiance here. The ambiance is pretentious and the terrace is overrated. Yes the steak was ok, and the grilled vegetables were ok, the tuna tartar tostada was ok but you are in mexico city were food is GREAT not just ok. Save your money eat elsewhere. Drink wise they have a gin tray where they make the drink in front of you and the only wine menu they have is on an iPad, which was just a turn off. I think this was actually the most I payed for a meal in cdmx and far from the best.
google avatar

Lourdes S.

Yelp
Delicious service, food and environment. Mexico City at its best, hope to make it a regular stop when in CDMX. We skipped appetizers to be able to eat our TomAHawk and sides, which was served on volcanic stone so we could enjoy different wellness of the meat. Delicious and sure appetizers are great but we left room for more drinks, tea and dessert! Must have Caramel Volcano Cake!!!!
google avatar

Ricardo C.

Yelp
Excellent choice for lunch or dinner. Menu is very complete and has the same options as the original restaurant in Monterrey. Reservations are suggested, as the place can get really crowded and waiting list can be more than 30 min. Go for rib eye a la sal, alcachofa and mashed potatoes. For appetizers try tacos manchados and queso flameado.

Chaya M.

Yelp
For smokers only. Families with kids will not feel welcomed. The worst seats are for non smokers (except on sundays). The very fact they they allow smoking at the restaurant terrace speaks very bad about them. Not a serious restaurant, more of an "antro". Food is good, though hence the 2 stars.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Maybe more of 3.5 stars. Great restaurant food was amazing the last 4 times I have been here. But, last Friday I was here and order a different steak and my buddy and his GF order another steak it was rough/tough hard to chew. Expensive place but the atmosphere is good. Would I come back for the 5th time ? Probably not but you should try this place and do the ribeye block salt. That's what I normally get.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
1 hr waiting and counting after I made the reservation for 4 pm, it is 5:30 now. I asked how long they said, "you are next " , people kept coming in and being seated after us. Lack of transparency to customers and complete disregard for their client's time . I will go to a restaurant that values my time. It's political, if you know them, you get priority.
google avatar

Mireya C.

Yelp
The food was delicious. Drinks were scrumptious. The servers were friendly and very attentive. The managers were not as friendly (but the servers were) You have to make reservations and indicate that you want to seat in the terrace. I made a reservation and wanted to sit on the terrace. We pretty much had to beg them to sit us at the terrace and it didn't happened until the end. We were not very happy about this. All other service was very good.
google avatar

Frances M.

Yelp
The good: Enjoy their beef birria (barrachera), it comes with a variety of salsas in a carousel and plenty of corn and flour tortillas. The food is great. The view of the hotels is nice at night from the terrace. The bad: Our friend made a reservation on open table for a Friday night and when we arrived we had to wait almost an hour beyond our slotted time. What saved us from leaving were the complimentary beers the hostesses were handing out, the too loud music had us wanting to dance and the rain. The ugly: Friends ordered a round of tequila reposado. They brought silver tequila shots, perhaps they thought we would not notice. Not good, we sent it back! We know our tequila! Also, there are too many smokers on the terraces, so that you end up smelling and inhaling it with your food. I have been there several of times but with so many options, why go back?
google avatar

Jaime J.

Yelp
Gotta give this place 5 stars. It is amazing. I came here in a Tuesday afternoon, and the place is exploding with people. The presentation, food choices, ambience, etc., are incredible. The "cabrito" or goat dish was beautiful. The flaming, melted cheese mouthwatering. The several selections of salsa for chips fantastic. The guacamole melts in your mouth. I met the General Manager, Marali. She cares about the customer and runs an amazing operation. COME HERE OFTEN!
google avatar

Yelp
This was a fantastic night. It is not common to find something to do for New Year's Eve in Mexico since it's traditionally a family holiday, but Buena Barra gave us an unforgettable experience. It was $1000 minimum per person, which ending up going very quickly after the alcohol, appetizer, risotto, steak, desserts and so much more. They also had beautiful decorations, like the balloons they released from the convertible roof at midnight and the dance floor. The DJ was incredible and played songs from every genre and ever era. The food was incredible and the table service was on point. I cannot say 1 bad thing about our experience. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun night.
