On the Grid : L.A . Burdick Handmade Chocolates

"In an office filled with chocolate lovers, L.A. Burdick is our unanimous favorite. Larry Burdick and his wife founded the company in 1987 in NYC, and, five years later, moved the business New Hampshire. It's a boutique feel with a french-inspired café and a small specialty grocery store. No wonder they do business all over the world." - Amalgam

Best Hot Chocolate in Boston | Eater Boston

"The beloved chocolatier has locations in Cambridge and Boston (and a few others around the country) where visitors can indulge in hot chocolate made with either dark, milk, or white chocolate. L.A. Burdick also has retail bags of hot chocolate available, including a spicy variety. It’s less liquid than your average hot chocolate and more akin to a straight-up melted chocolate bar. You’ll likely want buy a box of the shop’s famous chocolate mice, too." - Eater Staff

The Best Hot Chocolate In NYC

"Just standing inside of this chocolate shop in Soho feels like a holiday activity. The ceiling is covered in Christmas lights, and it smells like they might have a cocoa tree growing in the back. L.A. Burdick has been in the neighborhood for decades, and they serve several different kinds of hot chocolate. But the spicy hot cocoa is the one you want. It has the thick consistency of drinking chocolate, but it’s sweeter. The hint of cayenne balances things out nicely." - will hartman, carina finn koeppicus, nikko duren

Google
Unbelievable! So good we stopped in for a sipping chocolate and a pastry on the way to dinner as they would have been closed after dinner. Highly recommend stopping in, they are clearly master chocolatiers. You can even take home a 5 pound bag of one of their powdered sipping chocolate mixes for $173 - see the photo and enjoy the magic in your own home. For those of us on a more limited budget you can get a much smaller bag of sipping chocolate mix or choose from a HUGE variety of chocolate bars. Can’t wait to go back!!

Stopped by L.A. Burdick in Boston and wow—what a cozy little chocolate haven. I had the spicy hot chocolate and it was thick, rich, and had just the right kick. Also grabbed a chocolate mousse cake—super light and fluffy, perfect with the drink. Definitely coming back when I need a sweet fix!

Google
This chocolate shop is quite popular among locals. It features a classic, vintage-inspired design that adds to its charm. The signature hot chocolate is exceptionally rich and delicious, making it a standout choice. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, perfect for unwinding and enjoying a warm treat.

Google
Best hot chocolate and desserts I’ve ever had. Sweetness, thickness, concentration of chocolate was all spot on. Atmosphere was also so so cute although they could add more seats! It is slightly pricy and certainly tastes expensive but honestly… worth it. I came back three times in the three days I visited Boston.

Google
LA Burdicks, Back Bay. Their hot chocolate, so far is my gold standard. Tiny store but packed with dark and milk chocolate. Also have pastries as well. This is a must visit when visiting the Back Bay Area. Rich, chocolaty. Steaming hot if you desire. LA Burdick does a cup of hot chocolate right. Staff is very polite and courteous.

Google
If you like overpriced mediocre hot chocolate this has to be your go to place. Having tasted much finer hot chocolate’s around the world especially in Europe this is lack luster… this is just my humble opinion …. I do like the servers/ service and the atmosphere is electric. Be prepared to wait in a long line to order and to get your drink … Also if you like your coffee / hot chocolate in ceramic cups/ mugs, they serve only in paper cups.

Google
Fancy chocolates and coffee in a cozy environment with friendly staff. The kids especially liked checking out all of the chocolates shaped like rhinos, elephants, penguins and mice.

Google
There are always lines out the door on weekends. I went on a weeknight with a friend and I had the dark chocolate signature hot chocolate with whipped cream. It was good but not as decadent as I was expecting. The service was great and I love the cozy atmosphere. It reminded me of cafes in Quebec.

Yelp
I will dream about their dark sipping chocolate....so rich, dark and smooth. If chocolate weren't too sweet, I could drink this everyday in the winter! Located in Newbury Street, LA Burdick is crowded and busy, with some limited seating, which I recommend to sit down and enjoy your drink in a mug! There are also LOTS of chocolate sweet treats, the cookie looked like a real treat! The store is cozy, with a corner to buy just chocolates , in a gift set too.

Yelp
Established in the 1970's, L.A. Burdick is here with 37 years of handcrafting artisan chocolates for all them chocolate lovers to enjoy. If you have a sweet tooth, it can most certainly be fulfilled. And...not just chocolate. There's also pastries , cookies and assorted boxes of chocolates for purchase. And if you love hot chocolate as much as I do, take a moment, sit for a while & take a sip The small chocolate truffles are particularly pleasant.

Yelp
I usually get the hot chocolate when I am in Boston. This place is packed in the busiest area, so if you get a seat you are lucky. I got the large hot chocolate 80% (thats the highest you can go) with oat milk. Omg, it's rich, delicious and decadent, not too sweet. if you want to indulge, this is your place. The desserts are amazing too!
google avatar

Yelp
We had finished up dinner and were looking for a warm beverage for the walk back to our hotel. A couple locals said to walk around the corner and get some hot chocolate, so we did... and sooo glad we did! The chocolate is smooth, creamy, rich, and warm! There was nothing more to say, but go and enjoy!

Yelp
This place is the heaven of hot chocolate! I had a sip of the white hot chocolate and it touched my soul!!! I also ordered their earl grey mouse cake, hand down the most delicious thing I've ever had!! They have lots of cute chocolates.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a lovely chocolate specialty café and bakery that started in Switzerland and New Hampshire. The hot chocolate is indulgent and famous and they have the best black tea. It goes without saying that the tortes, pastries, hard chocolate and cookies are an experience too. They have a flagship factory location in New Hampshire where my friend and I drove three hours there and three hours back in the summer to visit. The managers would recommend vegan specials such as the Raspberry Apple Tart. It is especially enchanting during the winter holidays!!
google avatar

Deeps S.

Yelp
Super cute spot, we got the signature sipping chocolate. Very decadent and rich - a chocolate lover's dream! Recommend to check this place out if you love chocolate. It's also a lovely spot to sit at and enjoy your hot chocolate on a wintry Boston day!
google avatar

Florence K.

Yelp
Pretty good chocolate focused dessert shop! Wanted to come here post dinner for a dessert snack. The line was long but went by quickly. We got the earl grey tea cake and it was the right amount of sweetness! It was so delicious.
google avatar

Sammar G.

Yelp
This was recommended to me by a Boston local and it exceeded my expectations. Probably my favorite hot chocolate globally. The chocolates there also make great gifts. The store is so cute and the ambiance is very instagrammable. Service is great- no wait time. I come every time I visit Boston.
google avatar

Yelp
L.A. Burdick is an absolute dream for chocolate lovers! The moment you step inside, the rich aroma of cocoa surrounds you, and it's pure heaven. Their hot chocolate is a must-try, not your usual mix but a thick, luscious drink made from real chocolate. You can choose from dark, milk, white, or spicy chocolate, topped with fresh whipped cream. The experience feels almost magical! Service is super friendly, and the ambiance is filled with happy chocolate enthusiasts just like you. An indulgent treat worth every sip!
google avatar

Yelp
L.A. Burdick is a staple to the chocolate and upscale coffee scene in Boston, providing some of the most decadent options for locals and tourists alike. You can get a decent cup of joe if you're willing to wait in a long line and fight for seats in the small cafe area. However, if you're one to like milk, white and dark chocolates, and some dark chocolate options, this might be your place. I was able to find some small mice and penguin options at $5 a piece, and several small boxes to give out to friends on my visit back. However, what I found was extraordinarily higher pricing than some of the most decadent chocolatiers in the area. I think their chocolates are great, but you can find some more creative options in the area without the long wait. Parking can also be tricky in the area as well, which includes street and nearby lot options.

Yelp
We have visited the flagship LA Burdick previously and had very high expectations here in Boston. The hot chocolate was absolutely perfect - lovely, creamy, rich, dark, and flavorful. So wonderful. The pastries were fair, and that is why I can only give 4 stars. They were dried out and tasted like yesterday's goodies. Sorry. The chocolate is wonderful.
google avatar

Hanna H.

Yelp
To date this is my favorite spot for hot chocolate! Nothing beats a good ole cup of hot chocolate from LA Burdick. I got a small milk chocolate hot chocolate and while it is pretty pricey, it's worth it for the quality as a nice treat. It was the perfect amount of thickness, sweetness, and richness of the chocolate without it being too overwhelming. Once I took the first sip, I literally said "wow" in a good way, and since then I have been on the look out for other hot chocolate spots with a similar texture and taste as well. Love coming here and always recommend it!
google avatar

Sara Jieyi T.

Yelp
Cute chocolate store tucked away in a corner in the city of Boston. They serve mainly chocolate pastries, chocolate drinks and teas! The interior gives off a classy yet chill vibe to enjoy an afternoon tea with friends. I got the chocolate mousse and earl grey mousse which I highly recommend. Although the chocolate mousse is very chocolatey and I recommend taking it in small bites with tea to balance it out. It's self service. They serve gluten free chocolates here! Value: 8.5/10 Food: 9.5/10 Experience: 9.5/10

Yelp
Love love love this place! L.A. Burdick offers one of the best hot chocolate, so good that I am already looking forward to having it again next time when I am back in Boston. It's the perfect companion on a cold winter day. It was beautifully decorated giving such happy holiday vibes. I had the milk hot chocolate which was delicious with the perfect consistency. Next time I would like to try their dark hot chocolate flavor. My friend got me some chocolates from Madagascar and Ecuador origin to take home and they are the perfect gifts to give to your friendly and family who enjoy anything chocolate.
google avatar

Tanusree M.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by coming here! The interior reminds me of a winter lodge, super cozy. It gets super busy and there is not much seating, but people move fairly quick from their tables. If you are with a group, I suggest one person trying to find seating as the others order. We had to wait in line for a good 10 - 15 mins, but the drinks came out fast. I ordered the milk chocolate drink. It is incredibly chocolate-y, like the most decadent hot chocolate you've ever had! Reminds me of the hot chocolate you can get in Paris. Another person in my group got the dark chocolate drink, it was good as well, but actually tasted a bit sweeter than the milk version. I personally preferred the milk one over the dark. They also have super cute, unique chocolates and pastries. Unfortunately, I was unable to try them this time, but will try if I am back in the area!
google avatar

Lizzy Y.

Yelp
Hands down the best hot chocolate in Boston! The milk drinking chocolate is sweet, frothy, and rich. Perfect to take the chill off of a fall or winter's day. Not to mention, the charming one-story, French styled interior is lovely to cozy up in. I didn't like the idea of chocolate and orange together until I had the hazelnut orange cake. It is divine. I can't recommend it enough!
google avatar

Kinjal S.

Yelp
I loved it. I got the dark chocolate drinking chocolate hot and it was delicious although it was dark lol. The croissant was good and flaky, just wish they had been able to warm it up.
google avatar

Erika T.

Yelp
The drinking chocolate isn't to be missed! We loved how charming the place was inside. The pastries were lackluster. The chocolate in the pastries overwhelmed any other flavor unfortunately. Definitely recommend picking up some of the chocolate elephants. Cute, tasty, and a good cause!
google avatar

Ronny T.

Yelp
Fine chocolates indeed. Get some coffee, tea, or sipping chocolate. Yep, I wouldn't call what they serve as hot chocolate either cause it feels like you're literally drinking liquid chocolate. They serve a few treats as well to have with your chocolate. Half the store is for retail so you can buy and give or buy for yourself some high end chocolates. That leaves little room for sitting and hanging out. As others noted, the place does get crowded especially on weekends.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
Stopped in to pick up some chocolate on an online recommendation - they have some interesting options - including chocolate mice and penguins - and while the chocolate is expensive, it's delicious. Well worth the occasional splurge.
google avatar

Marlana Y.

Yelp
I always make a trip to visit here when I go back to Boston. Their hot chocolate brings a nice cozy feeling, it is super rich which I enjoy and a small cup would be enough. I usually go to the Harvard Cambridge location and they normally give me a white mug but this was before Covid. So it was in a take out cup. I also bought their mice chocolates which is always delicious and I highly recommend. Makes a great gift or a sweet treat for yourself.
google avatar

Chelsea W.

Yelp
Oh me oh my! If you go here for one thing, make sure it is the iced chocolate!!!!!!! It is DIVINE. Our party of 6 alll tasted the plain and spicy. Both were excellent but hands down the plain was the BEST. As we all reflected on the day, that was truly the best taste experience of the day. There are several chocolate drinks to choose from. Pastries, chocolate candy delights and chocolate bars. How can anything go wrong here?
google avatar

Rhianna S.

Yelp
Best chocolate drink I've had since Paris! Definitely recommend. The chocolate mousse cake was okay. It had a berry in it randomly. It was packed in the evening so be mindful if you have plans to sit and enjoy. It is decorated cute!
google avatar

Ash R.

Yelp
We got the sunflower milk chocolates which were super decadent and rich. Absolutely delicious and you can tell the attentiveness to detail and quality. It was truly evident. The service was super friendly too because they helped find a chocolate based on our preferences and likes. Overall, I'd recommend and I look forward to going back for the hot chocolate.
google avatar

Jessyca M.

Yelp
We had a fantastic time here. The variety of options for chocolate was cool. The ambience was charming and cute, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for enjoying a drink. The drinking chocolates were exceptional, rich and flavorful.
google avatar

Kami L.

Yelp
Amazing smell to the store when you walk in and the best chocolate to testify to it. I ordered a hot drinking chocolate with the earl grey pastry. The chocolate was a rich but still extremely enjoyable and the pastry had a distinct earl grey flavor as well as a good sponge-cake-like base. Everything came quickly and was plated nicely. I visited in the morning and there was certainly a number of people who were enjoying the coffee before the start to a workday. Would highly recommend for a satisfying morning start.
google avatar

Brooke C.

Yelp
This is such a cute place to sit down and sip hot chocolate. I got the milk chocolate flavor and it was amazing. There was no line and I got my hot coco pretty quickly at 6:15pm on a Thursday. I went here with a book and found it to have a great coffee shop vibe. I also appreciated the pitches of water and paper cups that were out for customers. The exterior and interior are decorated for Christmas, so overall this was a great holiday treat!
google avatar

June M.

Yelp
Best hot choco in Boston! Going here and have a hot dark chocolate during winter time is a must activity to do. During the holiday, specifically Christmas, this place is decorated with all the festive
google avatar

Han C.

Yelp
Super delicious and very rich dark hot chocolate. I devoured mine as I watched my friend politely sip hers, so it might be too rich for everyone, haha. We also shared a chocolate chip cookie, served warm (upon request), which was ever so gooey and almost more chocolate than cookie, which is the best ratio you could ever hope for. Super cute spot!
google avatar

Rowan W.

Yelp
This is such a cool place! I did t know what to expect because it had come recommended and I wasn't sure I was ready to go all in on a day of chocolate tasting... but luckily there are lots of little single boxes (and doubles... and more) of things so you can take home treats and sample to your heart's content. The little chocolate animals are just so darling. They've got a charm all their own, and though I found it hard to eat something so cute, they really are exceptionally delicious. I also got some drinking chocolate, which... wow, that packs a punch. Not your average hot chocolate by any means, it's very thick and rich. I shared with my partner, and we ended up mixing our dark and milk chocolate drinks to land on something just a little less sweet than mine alone, and a little less bitter than his alone. It was the perfect combo. They also had a handful of very pretty, very cute pastries for sale, but having chocolates AND drinking chocolate AND pastry might have been a bit much. Highly recommended for anyone visiting town looking to have a nice hot drink during the cold season, or anyone just looking for a cute souvenir to bring back home.
google avatar

Lily S.

Yelp
It may sound dramatic, but I was fighting back tears at L.A. Burdick. There's something so poignant, so nostalgic, about the small and cozy, amber-lit store. L.A. Burdick feels like a cashmere sweater, Christmas anticipation, and a scene from a Nora Ephron movie all at once. To step inside is to step back in time, like when you catch a whiff of something distinct and it triggers a searingly specific memory, yet you just.. can't.. put your finger on WHAT. The chocolate is quality, through and through. Each delicately crafted morsel demands that you slow down and appreciate them, before they melt away. I want everyone I love to spend an hour with me here, sipping and savoring.

Yelp
Love this location, wonderful old building. Great service 5A must is the chocolate covered ginger

Yelp
Great spot to visit with friends during winter. Cute lighting decor inside the cafe. I like both Cambridge and Boston locations
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
5 stars caused parents really liked it. Right in the middle of back bay, LA burdick is a super easy place to swing by to take a break from sightseeing. The unmistakeable smell of chocolate permeates the second you walk in and is super inviting. Got 2 desserts to share between 4 people and it was more than enough for a mid day snack.
google avatar

Icarian H.

Yelp
Great aesthetic and service. Glad it caught my eye as I was walking past. Going into the Boston bookmarks.
google avatar

Vivian Y.

Yelp
I shared the single source drinking chocolate (it was Venezuela for the month and we got it hot) with a friend and we both loved it. As a dark chocolate lover, I love how it's rich, silky, chocolatey, and not too sweet. It was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. I also purchased a bunch of their pre-packed chocolate gift boxes to give to friends and family. Service was great. Their signature chocolate mice and elephants are adorable and everyone loved their gift boxes.
google avatar

Hanna L.

Yelp
Absolutely on point!!!! 5 stars chocolate store. Quality can't be compared. Could be pricey, but it's worth the price. We had to order more products from the online. Please open a shop in California. Hot chocolate drink at a store was dark and rich. Must try.
google avatar

C M.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible, rude customer service and don't bother writing an email to management because they don't respond.
google avatar

Benny D.

Yelp
Awesome place to visit and here is why: I use to come by after dinner to get tea, coffee, or hot chocolate with dessert. Chocolate is the specialty here so the hot chocolate is really rich. If you are here for the first time, I do recommend the hot chocolate with another cup of water. First timer aren't typically use to the richness. Lately, I have been ordering the steam milk & honey and ask for shave chocolate to be put into it. Another thing I do is buy the hot chocolate packages and boxes of chocolate to go as gifts. The chocolate animals (Penguin, Elephant, & Mice) are amazing and cute.

Sofia L.

Yelp
Went specifically for the burdick chocolate chip cookie and was underwhelmed. I got it served warm which was suggested. It looked like it would be gooey and soft but it was SO hard and crunchy it seemed like it was a day or two old?? I got the raspberry chocolate chip cookie as well which flavor-wise was very good but same deal of being way too hard/stale. Disappointing to say the least. Maybe i'll try the harvard location next time
google avatar

Melissa R.

Yelp
YUM! I am so happy I finally got to try L.A. Burdick. Took my Mom there to start our little day out in Boston and I am so happy we decided to start here. I've been dying to try their hot chocolate (or as they call it drinking chocolate) and oh my goodness, it did not disappoint. I got the milk chocolate drinking chocolate and my Mom got the dark chocolate mocha, which she said was the best thing she's ever drank. We also got a few desserts: chocolate croissant, ginger loaf and chocolate orange cake slice. All were delicious, but a point was docked because everything was pretty dry which was disappointing, but didn't kill the whole dessert.
google avatar

Yelp
A much needed break for our feet after a long day of sightseeing in Boston! The whole store smell so good as soon as you walk in. The ice milk chocolate was smooth and creamy, it hit the spot on a warm Boston day! I also got slice of almond japonaise ganache and the sweetness was just right. Our friend got the passion fruit mousse cake and it was delish as well. The worker was super friendly and helpful, everyone are so nice here. They also have pre-packed chocolate gift boxes with cute animals such as bunnies and mice if you need souvenir ideas.
google avatar

Adina S.

Yelp
L.A. Burdick is a great spot! The place has a great vibe, with a really cute exterior and a classic looking interior. I've also been to the Harvard Square location, which was equally amazing. They have a wide range of chocolate varieties, including chocolate bars and truffles. You can buy some treats to go, but they also have a nice little seating area if you choose to grab some of their café items. I have to say my absolute favorite is their melting chocolate. It's essentially hot chocolate, but has a much stronger chocolate flavor, almost like pure melted chocolate! It's very rich, so I recommend splitting it with a friend. If you're looking for something extra special, ask about their cocoa beans from other countries! Overall, I'm a fan.
google avatar

Kazi S.

Yelp
Delicious handmade chocolates. This place is super popular and the line is nearly through the door. The place shows their history on the walls and through their chocolate and dessert displays. The hot chocolate is incredible. When you taste it, it's almost like tasting melted chocolate. It is a very unique taste, and it is something we all need to try. This is definitely a place that everyone needs to try!
google avatar

Holly K.

Yelp
THE best chocolates you will ever have in your life!!!!! I have not stopped yet into the actual store, but have noticed the line is usually very long. Both times I have had chocolates delivered to me. I've tried two variety boxes, and both did not disappoint. The chocolate is pricey, and I wasn't sold at first glance, despite that their chocolate is "cooked, piped, cut, dipped, garnished, and packed by hand since 1987". After my first taste, I was sold; bought my second box within a week. The quality and taste of the chocolate does not compare to anything I've had. The chocolate has a velvet consistency and melts in your mouth. Each box comes with a LOT of chocolate (several rows and layers). Each individual piece had a unique and interesting taste. Cannot stress enough, worth.the.price!! Amazing, amazing, amazing chocolate!
google avatar

Eva G.

Yelp
This is my second time here and this time I brought a family member. I bragged how good the hot chocolate was reminding me of Italy. The pastries are enjoyable too. This is a great place to come for dessert or if you are having a craving for hot chocolate.

Kentaro K.

Yelp
Their milk chocolate drinking chocolate was fantastic. Unsurprisingly, they kindly let us know that dogs are not allowed even if they're in a bag.
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
I had a post dinner hankering for dessert and Yelp steered me correctly on this one! I would say mousse cakes are my favorite type of dessert and passion fruit is one of my favorite flavors, so was delighted by the menu. The passion fruit chocolate mousse was the perfect flavor and texture-- you could tell it was very fresh and the ingredients high quality. The earl grey mousse was also delightful -- it was super soft and the perfect balance of flavor. I will be back!
