8 of Tacoma’s Best Pho Spots | Eater Seattle

"The Vietnamese street-food trend comes to 6th Ave. with this stylish two-story eatery, open since December 2017. Downstairs there’s a mix of exposed brick, rustic wooden benches, and Edison bulbs, upstairs features a full bar with a more modern aesthetic, and the kitchen fires until midnight during the week and 2 a.m. on weekends to satisfy the late-night set. Beef, chicken, and vegetarian pho are offered alongside five-spice grilled quail and the house banh xeo, a traditional Vietnamese rice crepe, served here with pork belly and squid."

I come here fairly regularly with my best friend. We love the food and the atmosphere. Not being totally snobby, we get the best or the worst service some days.... Overall the quality of the food is very consistent. That is why we keep coming back. We understand that some days are not the best for the staff on deciding factors... Still one of the cleanest broths with having a good vegetarian option.

Man this place is something else. Beautiful whole in the wall. Food was amazing people were cool atmosphere is cool has an upstairs and downstairs . The only reason it almost gave it has 4 star is because of the bathrooms. If you know it's going to be a unisex bathroom I feel it has to be more then par. But other then that great place definitely going to come back also we came at a non busy hour and parking was kinda hard

Google
A great place to find a break from the traditional Tacoma Washington fast food scene. Offering a fresh selection of Vietnamese food, you can tell the ingredients are all fresh and we'll kept. The good doesn't take long to come at all. When I arrived, the floor was covered in water from what I hope was cleaning efforts. Overall a good place to eat!

Update: We have been frequenting La Cà Bar for years and keep on returning for what is, in our experience, the best Vietnamese food in Tacoma. This go-around we tried the Vietnamese crêpe (bánh xèo), Bún Bò Huê Pho and grilled beef bánh mì sandwich (Bánh Mì Bò Nướng). Everything was excellent and super tasty. The bánh mì is the best we have had anywhere in the PNW; generously filled with grilled meat that is perfectly balanced with pickled veggies and herbs. When we have a hankering for Vietnamese food, this place is on the top our list. Original (2019): This little Vietnamese place on 6th ave serves up some truly fantastic food, including one of the best bánh mì sandwiches I have had. The bread was perfect, crusty and flaky but not too hard and the grilled pork filling was tender yet nicely charred. We will return. My only complaint are the macarons. The flavors were great: the coffee macron had a bold and strong coffee flavor and the cinnamon macron was amazing. However, they were not matured long enough, and therefore still hard and crunchy. If left longer they would develop into soft fluffy and chewy centers with just the very outside crunchy, like a thin egg shell.

Google
Interesting location with bold flavors that truly stand out. I love the inside art, which adds a unique touch to the dining experience. The serving sizes are good, leaving you satisfied. The only downside was the server being a little slow, but overall, a great spot for delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

Dinner on a Monday evening. Great, friendly service! Delicious food with the pork banh mi and the chicken vermicelli bowl. The portion size was plentiful. The pork spring rolls were ok. Won’t get those again. The space is cozy and quaint. Parking is a small lot with some on the street. The ambiance was chill and enjoyable. I saw quite a bit of ppl go upstairs to the bar: seemed popular. Prices are reasonable. This place is worth checking it out especially if you like pho😀

Google
Used to love this place but I won't be back. Ordered off the happy hour menu and charged full price. Told afterwards (upon checkout) that it required a beverage purchase. A "sorry" and a shrug. Wings used to be great but they were dry/overfried and lazily sauced after the fact. Banh mi is still decent but no reason to pay $13 for one with so many other choices around town. I should also report that "25% off appetizers!" is a bit misleading when it according to the staff member it only applied to (2) out of the 10 or so appetizers... did I mention it didn't even apply to my order? (Despite getting one of these 2?) A few bucks lost but saved me a lot in the long run i guess.

Google
I was checking out this recommended place and it did not dissappont with their food. Nice atmosphere and service. I got the #20 Hue City Beef Noodle Soup, it had a nice amount of meat, noodles and vegetables. The broth was very tasty and complimented the overall dish. I suggest putting all the vegetables in it and leaving the lime wedge. After eating it for a while, take some soup on your spoon, add a drop of lime on it, mix and then taste it. If you like how it tastes then squeeze the lime wedge on your soup and mix. To me it enhances the soup broth even more. Give it a try.

Yelp
Love this place!! Dine in or takeout the food quality remains the same. It is a little pricey but the food is so fresh u can taste the quality of ingredients. We got the salmon spring rolls, salt and pepper squid & the 5 spice wings everything was amazing. For entree I got the beef vermicelli bowl and the portion was BIG and the beef was soooo flavorful! Our service was sub par but it was 1am on Friday the bartender was giving he was ready to go tf home, but love that on Fridays & Saturday's their open until 2am. After 10pm (I'm pretty sure maybe 9pm) they're 21+ only at their upstairs bar which is nice and spacious. I would highly recommend! And can u find Vietnamese food for cheaper around town? Yes but this place you can taste the freshness off ingredients. And portions are decent I think it's worth the price

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Food tested great!!! Service is nice. Server is kind. Nice place for casual date night. Going back!

Yelp
Went to this place a third time and it was OK. First was take out, second was decent but not spectacular and third was with my partner and it was so so. Their pho options are limited and not as flavorful as other restaurants. It is a fun location, but next to a cannabis store, so it is not the best location for food IMO. It has quirky decor but not really a homage for Vietnamese cuisine. The wait staff was nice but seemed very green. They kept coming back asking if we needed anything more not because we looked like we needed help or they we were being helpful, it was because they were bored. There wasn't a lot of action happening. The spring rolls were good and I Liked the crispy fried roll in the middle but the pho was disappointing. Probably won't go back.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
I thought the food was great! The broth of the pho was delicious and enjoyed the overall vibe. The only picky comment is for a good cleaning of the tables and the tops of the tabletop condiments. They were pretty crusty, but we will definitely be back.

Yelp
Our neighbors wanted to try this place so we went. Love a good Vietnamese place and this didn't disappoint in regards to the food and flavors. I will say, I have had just as good if not better Pho elsewhere for less money. The service was good, although we sat up in the bar and it was just the bartender, who seemed a bit overwhelmed. The food was on par with what you would expect and came out fairly quickly. The bar is certainly more spacious than the downstairs, but overall not a bad place to eat.

Yelp
Cute little Vietnamese place in Central, with a tight parking lot you can enter from 6th or Junett. Upon entry, we were asked if we were all over 21, since there's upstairs seating with a bar. They recommended we sit upstairs, which I would say may have been our first mistake. There was almost no one upstairs, the AC was crazy cold, and our server barely came around and may not actually know how to smile. We ordered some local brews to start - Manny's and Mac & Jack's Amber were solid. The pho is definitely on the aromatic side, which our party enjoyed. Of course, you'll get full plates of basil, beansprouts, and jalapeno slices to add in. I ordered the Bun Bo Hue, which was fine. The soup was very mild compared to more authentic versions I've had, and both the beef and hue sausage slices were bland. No pork hock or blood, and no banana flower or ongchoy. I called an audible and subbed egg noodles, which were honestly quite tasty and saved the dish. Not my favorite rendition, but serviceable. Prices are comparable to back home, expect $15-20 per entree. If you're in Tacoma and craving Vietnamese, La Ca Bar will do in a pinch.

Yelp
Parking is a one way in and you can miss it... drive slow when approaching. Parking spots are small and short. Lastest health is OKAY, so there are a few things they got hit on. Plenty of AC for a hot day, the inside has an old coffee / cafe feel (wood & metal w/ cement floor). We had the Spring Rolls w/ steams shrimp. Very refreshing and delicious. They have open ends which will cause the noodles and some of the insides to fall out, be prepared. 4 stars The Bánh Mì Sandwich was excellent. Packed with meat, they did not skimp at all, well worth the $12. The bread was toasted on top (not too toasted that cuts up your mouth) and the bottom was soft. 5 stars Only negative was the condiments on the table. Did not use since they need to be cleaned. I wanted to use the condiments but not these. We will be returning & staff (1 person) was great for doing everything.

Yelp
I would like to write this review for the owner I love your restaurant. I love how it taste of your food but your customer service is horrible. She looks like she did not want to help me at all. I love to eat. Pho when I eat. My pho I like extra lime and jalapeño. and yes, I drink a lot of water. It is really hard to get the service attention. She does not pay attention to any of the table at all. She ignored us when we asked for a water refill. It took us at least 10 minutes to get one when I asked for extra lime and jalapeño do not get them at all. She was so angry when I asked her for the water refill. It was the worst customer service I ever had. Today is August 6 at 3:30 PM

Dar S.

Yelp
It was our first time and it was just amazing. I had the beef pho and fresh rolls. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Jerome T.

Yelp
i've been here handful times over the years, but my two most recent experiences at this establishment haven't been the best. the customer service from the bartender is a hit and miss. The food quality doesn't seem to be consistent as well. I came here with a group of friends and the group told me they would never come back. I felt super bummed as I recommended this place for us to go to that night.
google avatar

Samavi A.

Yelp
This was such a surprise find! This place was recommended by my sister's friend and we stumbled across this as we were in Tacoma. It's tucked away in a cute little shopping strip. We both ordered chicken dishes which were both so flavorful and fresh! Some great flavors!
google avatar

Yelp
Omg this place has the best Vietnamese food I have ever had , the service was A+ and the beer selection is the best
google avatar

Linda M.

Yelp
Loved it. Cozy ( kinda small) with really good food and fair pricing. Get their to eat before the bar crowd.

Yelp
One of my favorite pho places in Tacoma! The food is always on point and I've both dined and ordered to go. I've tried many items from their menu and the beef pho and banh mi is really good. I like the different styles for appetizers and it has a more bar ambiance with good cocktails too. The only negative is the parking situation there which is why I tend to order to go rather dine in.

Sheri T.

Yelp
We had fresh spring rolls, a Vietnamese crepe, salt and pepper squid and a pork noodle bowl- ordered too much for 2 of us, but it was so good we were happy to take home most of the noodle bowl and part of the crepe. Service was excellent. We need to go back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
They still keepin it trill out here at La Ca Bar! Outstanding food and quick service. All day baby. 5 stars.
google avatar

Olyvia N.

Yelp
3.5 stars for my rating When we arrived for happy hour and right before dinner rush so no one else was there so we got seated right away. There was only one server running the floor and service could've been better - to be fair we were the only customer for about 30 mins so it's not like it was busy but we would have a hard time trying to get their attention, get our questions answered and it felt very rushed to get our orders in. We ordered: nam nướng and salmon fresh rolls - wasn't bad pretty good, I love that they add extra crisps to the Nam nướng rolls bánh xèo - love how fresh and crispy it was bánh mì thịt nướng - delicious bánh bột lọc - delicious as well Overall everything was good and food came out fairly quickly. Definitely over priced for sure even during happy hour for 25% off on certain appetizers so the deal wasn't that great when you gotta order a drink as well for it to count.

Yelp
My favorite vietnamese spot in tacoma hands down. Good veggie menu. My favs are the veggie pho, tofu spring rolls, and tofu banh mi.
google avatar

Brittanie H.

Yelp
10/10 I stumbled on this place while exploring the area, and it did not disappoint. I ate upstairs on the rooftop, which made for a beautiful open-air experience. The service was just okay. There was only one bartender, and he was working the whole upstairs area and the outside, so he was stretched thin. As a result, all requests had to be made at the bar directly, which was a bit inconvenient. I ordered the five spice mule, hue city dumplings and five spice wings. Everything was so fresh, and the authentic Vietnamese flavors burst through. La Ca is an awesome bar with great food and I highly recommend it if you're in the downtown Tacoma area.
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
A friend wanted to try this place out after hearing positive things but we were super let down. We sat at the bar and the bartender was just, aloof. Didn't offer us drinks, just left menus and then came back to take our order saying nothing. It was like pulling teeth the whole interaction with him. Then the bathrooms- there were maybe 4 tables in the whole place at the time- there was no soap and no paper towels like...come on in good service that has got to be one of the grossest things. Having worked in food service myself if you have down time, you're cleaning. Idk what's up but the vibes are off, the food is flavorless, overall super disappointing experience. Hopefully they can take note and make some improvements because the potential is there.
google avatar

Yadira M.

Yelp
Food 8/10 - the wings were super bomb but pricey Pho was a little pricey for what it was Service: 5/10 - we were ignored most of the time cause another party was ordering a lot of booze. Overall was good but not high on my list to go eat there with a family with preteens.
google avatar

J K.

Yelp
Good food but best water there as with take out of the fried foods, ruins the crispy texture
google avatar

Vinny T.

Yelp
The food was OK, but the service was slow and indifferent. Stopped in for an early dinner on a weekday. After being seated, we were ignored for longer than 15 minutes. There were a few other tables of diners, but no staff to be found. We checked our phones for the next nearest pho restaurant and were about to leave, when finally glasses of water were brought out. We had a simple order, just 4 bowls of beef pho. From seating to our bowls being served was about 45 minutes!!! Quick "Vietnamese street food" this is not. And to top it off, we were never given a check. When I went to the register to inquire, the hostess was too busy checking social media on her phone to notice I was standing in front of her! Definitely never coming back.

Darlene M.

Yelp
We were visiting Puget University and a college student recommended this place and we were so happy we went. It was my daughter's first time trying Vietnamese food and she loved it. Good chill vibes and customer service was good. Chicken plate with chicken broth rice 10/10 Beef Pho 10/10 Thai Ice Tea 10/10
google avatar

Toby P.

Yelp
My son had never had pho before. I'd say he enjoyed his first order. Also got the #32 fried rice. It was wonderful with shrimp and sausage. The grilled pork banh mi was also excellent. Really good fresh food here. Great place!
google avatar

Saemyi L.

Yelp
One of my top faves in tacoma! They ran out of the chicken thigh but offered wings instead. It worked out well! I love the rice, so full of flavor and everything just goes so well together. The service was GREAT! Always so friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Henry D.

Yelp
I just ordered To go for me and my pregnant fiancé. I ordered a meatball pho and side grilled chicken leg to go along with my fried rice. When I arrived back at the hospital I opened the containers and there was no grilled chicken leg or meatballs. Instead we received raw bloody meat and chicken teriyaki. My fiancé was not able to eat the meat at all because the broth was not hot enough upon opening our food. Me and her always love to dine in but the to go experience was not great tonight, and unfortunate as that is what she was craving the most. I tried to reach out via email but it was not able to send and was kicked back.
google avatar

Mari M.

Yelp
Maybe I went in with too high of expectations but I was very disappointed. The tofu spring rolls were good not great, there was mostly noodles and a little bit of tofu and lettuce. I prefer a lot more herbs and something with a stronger flavor if the tofu is going to be so mild. The veg pho was very underwhelming. The tofu seemed like it was just cut up and tossed in from a block. The broccoli was raw and the broth was very mild. The Thai iced tea with coconut milk was tasty. The server was kind and attentive. They have an "ok" cleanliness rating and you could definitely see why in the bathroom.

Yelp
Another solid pho spot in Tacoma, unlocked! La Ca Bar was on mine and my boyfriend's list to hit for date night, and we've been twice in the last month or so. Both times, we've come after 8pm and have sat upstairs in the bar area. While this spot doubles as a bar, it's very laid back. They usually have some sort of game on their tvs, and the Touchtunes jukebox is always playing throwback music thanks to all the guests (or maybe the bartenders?) It's a clean, modern environment and all the staff is super nice. Both times we've gone, we've ordered the same stuff. Spring rolls to start, and bahn mi for my boyfriend and pho (steak & meatball) pho for me! The spring rolls are loaded up with fresh goodies and the peanut sauce is good. I'm not one to order a sandwich over pho, but my boyfriend said the bahn mi is the best he's ever had and will probably get it again next time we go. The pho is sooo good. The broth is delicious with tons of flavor, cuts of meat are always great (not fatty) and it's overall the perfect dish for these chilly winter nights! For an appetizer, two entrees for both of us, and a beer, we get out of here spending right around $50 which isn't bad for a date night imo. La Car Bar is definitely one of our new favorites and I'm sure we'll be back quite a few times in the coming months.

Omar C.

Yelp
As someone who used to love going here, I will never return. Bartender upstairs seems to have some insecurities and a complete d-bag. Group of friends and I went out to enjoy a birthday celebration and to be honest was quite hard when you're not receiving good customer service and the middle aged bartender has an ego. Sad to have recommended that place to everyone just to get treated the way we did. Highly recommend any other place but there!
google avatar

M Y.

Yelp
Been here several times and had good food. Yesterday did take out and discovered a hair in my sandwich. Ugh, lunch ruined.
google avatar

Tammy E.

Yelp
This spot had some decent Vietnamese food for being open so late in the area. We showed up after the Elton John show on a weeknight about an hour before closing and were told we could only order appetizers or pho. Needless to say we were confused when the patrons nearby got the banh mi they ordered right before our dishes arrived. I stopped the server to ask her why the bartender said they only had apps and soups earlier. She tried to say the kitchen was closed but basically I figured out it was because the bartender had been rude to my friend while I was in the restroom, just pointing to the apps and pho as the options for ordering. That was disappointing to hear. I ordered the calamari and papaya salad and my friend ordered the pho. We finished our meal so they could close up well before the posted closing time and got out of there. It didn't feel super welcoming, but we also weren't the last ones there. I'd probably come back during the day time and sit downstairs. The food was tasty - of course I'd like to try the bun next time.

Yelp
Gathered with a few friends at La Ca Bar, which serves Vietnamese street food located on 6th Ave in Tacoma. We sat upstairs in the bar area and had great service from the the bartender and other staff members. Our drink choices included delicious from-scratch margaritas, and beer from a well-rounded selection. I would go back just for the margarita! Opting for items from the Happy Hour menu, which lasts until 6pm, we enjoyed beautifully presented Spring Rolls with a tasty peanut sauce, featuring lettuce, pork, shrimp, and basil. The beef skewers offered a unique twist with finely minced meat threaded onto the skewer in a lemongrass marinade. Both items were delicious and I am looking forward to returning to try additional menu items, such as the pho, which is supposed to be one of the best in town.
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
Great place!! Love the food and customer service! Our waiter was great! He was really honest about our questions about the food. Great pho and chicken wings!! I ate the Bun Bo Hue. Amazing!!!!

Zafina A.

Yelp
My favorite cuisine is Vietnamese and I will tell you this has been the best Vietnamese food I have had in Washington so far. Some of the items on the menu had familiar items with unique twists! It was very refreshing to try. It was nice that they had separated seating upstairs for the bar and downstairs for people who may not want to be at a bar. We went on a Tuesday and the service was fast for only having several staff members there
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
Some of my favorite food and drinks in tacoma, Absolutely live this spot. Highly recommend
google avatar

Ann W.

Yelp
Don't let those faces fool you...had a fabulous feast at La Car Bar...bonding with our lovely server over budgies. Food was amazing...especially the veggie crepe...so fluffy, yet crisp, and the size of a sumo wrestler's head! Extra peanut sauce, iced coffees, all the good stuff...and open late!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Love your food but whoever is in charge of checking online orders needs supervision. Three out of five of my orders are wrong

L.K. W.

Yelp
The menu offers great variety. The table staff are prepared to answer every question & offer recommendations. Staff are friendly and attentive. The food is delicious. They offer dine in or out and are open LATE! I really appreciate discovering this wonderful food after 9pm. The place is kind of grubby. I always feel like washing my hands frequently. If I had somewhere to take food to for take-out, I would. But I'm always traveling or visiting Tacoma when I eat here.
google avatar

Mona R.

Yelp
Good food, ok service, disorderly kitchen. A group of my coworkers and I stopped by to get lunch. It took the server a while to come by our table to take our order but that was ok. When the food arrived it was really sporadic. They brought over some of our food but then stopped and brought over 2 other tables' foods who arrived after us. One of our coworker sat there without her pho for the entire time we ate. The server wasn't sure why the kitchen is getting the orders out like this. Now to the food. We had multiple types of pho at the table and everyone loved it. I ordered the 5 spice wings and the beef bahn mi. The wings were not to my taste so I covered it in hot sauce. The meat in the bahn mi was very flavorful and the baguette was tasty too but the sandwich overall was dry and needed sauce. At the end we asked the server for our bill, she said ok and walked away. We sat there for 5 minutes before deciding to go to the counter and pay. All and all it was ok. Maybe they were having an off day. I'll give them a try another time
google avatar

Nicky H.

Yelp
I came in during a "me time" day. It was later in the evening and I wanted a glass of wine and fresh rolls, so naturally this was a viable option. The ambiance was laid back but clean. Good music and good wine. I got the Chicken pho and fresh rolls and they were delightful. The service was attentive, although as a solo diner I don't require much lol. I'll definitely be back

Lars A.

Yelp
First let me just say that if you're looking for an authentic traditionally prepared Vietnamese meal, then La ca Bar is NOT the place to be. Don't get me wrong ... the food they do serve here is fairly tasty and pretty good. It's just the flavors (and sometimes the spice/heat) have been toned-down quite a bit, and also key ingredients are not found in some of their menu items ... most notable example being their Bun Bo Hue. That being said, their Banh Mi is very good. Anyway, the service was friendly. The restaurant's ambiance reminds me that of a tavern / sports bar, but it was also relatively quiet and very clean. The prices are a bit high when compared to most other better Vietnamese restaurants in the south sound region. While there are some parking out front, during peak hours finding a place to park can be a bit problematic.
google avatar

Eddie J.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great Vietnamese vermicelli noodle bowl in Tacoma, then head over to La Cà Bar on 6th Ave. We've been craving the grilled pork vermicelli bowl so much we had to return and order it again. La Cà Bar is also a great place to meet up with friends, and there is a bar upstairs over the dining room. Cheers!
google avatar

M D.

Yelp
A chill vide and good Vietnamese coffee. Parking is a little tough because their neighbors clientele is usually in a rush and don't park very well.

Chris H.

Yelp
Bahnmi was good. The dumplings, not so much. Cute little spot. My husband had a tofu bowl. It was dry and didn't have much flavor. I'd go back for the sandwich but, not the other items.

Sabrina C.

Yelp
Never had an issue coming here until I started sitting at the bar and ordering what I usually order only to feel unsafe in an environment and saying I'm causing them to lose customers because I order shrimp paste :) the smell is absolutely terrible to the non Asian manager and to his non Asian customers even though he is working at a Vietnamese restaurant and his customers know it's a Vietnamese restaurant. :) he was "losing customers" because of the smell when I am a customer as well and also south East Asian. Not the environment I want to eat in and I hope my fellow Asians can stay away from here! I'll stick to the mom and pop shop where it's normal to eat shrimp paste! PS the cooks are amazing it just sucks when I can't even eat in comfort.

M C.

Yelp
I so want to like this place and other's obviously do. We at up at the bar as less people but it felt like we were an inconvenience and the food was expensive and just not tasteful. So much so, that I had to think hard about what I had -- it was the chicken wings which were way over done and lacked flavor. My daughter had a vermicelli bowl - which she said were (again) flavorless.
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
We came here on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy! There was only one server for the entire floor but she sat us down immediately. The food portions here are pretty huge so my friend and I decided to share a large beef pho and a rice crepe. In all honesty the pho here is mediocre but the place offers a cozy and chill spot for you to hang out with your friends especially late at night. We also checked out the bar which was obviously empty because it was a weekday but I heard from the staff there that it gets pretty crazy on the weekends. All in all service was superb and the ambiance was great. Note that their rating for health inspection or overall rating is an "Okay".

Yelp
Our go-to for all Vietnamese cravings. You must order the fish sauce wings. Fresh ingredients make for quality food and this place knows this best.
