We reserved the 7:30 seating and everything was lovely. We were seated right away and our host for the evening was a distinguished gentleman who took extra effort to speak with us in English. We DO NOT expect this but are grateful when it is offered. The parma was like silk, absolutely delicious. We ordered the classic meals of scallopini and vesuvio. The sauce for the vesuvio was expertly balanced. It can be overwhelming to eat a full dish with a heavy cream base. This was not the case at La Cantinetta!
Of course, tiramisu for dessert. The crusty bits were soaked in coffee, again, flavorful. We enjoyed a parting gift of limonello.
What I enjoyed the most, however, was the atmosphere. Yes, it is intimate. It can be loud. But the lighting is so sexy, it feels like holidays with a home full of family. The entire staff is graceful in their movements, I never felt overlooked nor uncomfortable. And I am an introvert who is easily exhaustes by crowds but La Cantinetta was cozy and warm. I can see where some reviews are more critical, which is fair as everyone is allowed their voice. I will say that for a party of two, we ate well and were treated with dignity. We did not at all feel rushed. As new residents of Marseille, we look forward to returning and hopefully experiencing the joy of hospitality again!
