25 Best Restaurants on the San Francisco Peninsula | Eater SF

"La Casita Chilanga is a Mexico City-style torta restaurant dishing out sandwiches made with al pastor, smoked pork leg, and caramelized pineapple. The space might be small, but the tortas are huge. There are more than 20 options, all assembled on telera and filled with caramelized onion, refried beans, tomato, avocado, mayo, and salsa. Meat lovers will appreciate “la super aguila” stuffed with breaded chicken, sausage, pork leg, and chorizo." - Octavio Peña

Really good tortas/sandwiches. Free parking out front. The place can seat about 9 people.

Google
As a professional torta eater from Mexico City I can say comfortably that this is a great torta place. I had the classic cubana and it was great. I don't give 5 starts because there is no place to eat inside and no chipotles for the torta. Will come back.

Alexander Hernandez

Some of the bed tortas I’ve had. Interesting different versions of your favorite mexican sandwiches

Yelp
HUGE tortas. As big as your face! Parking can be a bit challenging here, but as long as you are willing to walk a few blocks and circle a bit, this place is worth it. It's a rather small, one-room establishment, very grab and go. Service is friendly and prompt. Their menu is entirely in Spanish (I rather love this; I'm always up for a challenge - cough - Google lens). I ordered a Sofia Vergara, which has tender chicken that was perfectly seasoned and not too salty. Their bread is what I call "torta bread" which, in my experience, is hard to get moist. It tends to be fluffy, but rather airy, with a thin, leather-like top. One thing it does well is soak up the ingredients and retain the flavor, which makes for a pretty bomb sandwich in the end. I'll be back to try the Cubana!

Yelp
one star because I can't put zero or negative due to a rock on my torta. How does a rock get inside the torta!?

Yelp
The flautas were light and crisp although a little bland. The salsa roja was too hot. Not having a suitable salsa roja ruined the experience. The girls at the front desk were nice. The salsa at El Grullense Much better. Heard the tortas are good

Yelp
This hole in the wall is smack dab on Middlefield road along with a lot of Latino shops. I've been wanting to try this place since my friend told me about it. They take card now, used to be cash only apparently. The menu is also entirely in Spanish, which wasn't a problem for me since I can read some Spanish (thanks 7 years of learning Spanish). Google/Google Translate is your friend if you need it though. I got the La Cubana which has pretty much all the meats: milanesa de res (thin pan fried beef), jamón (ham), chorizo (come on you better know this), pierna (breast meat), and salchicha (sausage). All sandwiches come with avocado, mayo, salsa de Xipotl, caramelized onions, refried beans, queso fresco cheese, and slices of tomato. This is a hefty sandwich enough for 2 meals unless you have a big appetite. I loved how soft the bread is on the inside and how everything is the right amount of spicy. The pile of meats can be a bit salty so I might go a different route next time but ultimately this was such a satisfying meal. One of the gems of Redwood City, perfect for your after Costco meal.

Yelp
We ordered a cubana torta to share and it was just enough. Not too salty with a little kick to it. The meat was a bit tough/chewy, so it kind of made it messy to eat.

Yelp
Amazing tortas--never disappointed; highly recommended Definitely a go to when craving Mexico City style food and tortas

Yelp
After shopping at Costco in RWC, I wanted to try a local hole-in-the-wall. Searching on YELP wasn't helpful until I looked at the YELP map and clicked on the numbered restaurants in the area. My son is a big carnivore and he was delighted with his La Cubana torta. It has a variety of meat, but the menu is in Spanish so we don't know what kind of meat was in the torta. However he said he would definitely order it again. I had the Eva torta, based on reviews here, a simple beef torta. It was very good. I have a sensitive stomach and some greasy foods attack me. I am happy to report no problem with this torta. I love finding local places. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
If you are looking for a real deal, delicious, meat filled TORTA, look no further than La Casita Chilanga! After a quick morning hike in Pulgas Ridge, I had a hankering for something new. Something I don't think I ever order is a torta, and after seeing the pictures on here, I was sold. If you've never been to this part of Middlefield Rd, it's mostly industrial, auto shops, but don't sleep on this part of the street, lots of good eats can be found! First time here I asked the staff which of the tortas they'd most recommend. The staff recommended the Cubano, which has a variety of meats, with the star of the show being the milanesa (breaded steak). My friend was scared to order something with so much meat, so he went with the chorizo torta. Since it was our first time, we did the half/half torta exchange, which is perfect whenever trying a new spot like this. The Cubano was flavorful, meaty, and the bread was toasted to perfection. What I loved about the bread is that it's crunchy and light, which helps the insides of the torta really accentuate the melody of flavors. Since there is so much meat, it could've used a bit more crema or mayo to balance out the saltiness of the meats, but still a very darn good torta. After biting into the chorizo torta, my friend instant reaction was, I should've went with the Cubano lol. The chorizo is ground, so in a torta/sando, not really the texture I prefer. The top 3 sandwiches on their menu are their top sellers, so looks like I got two more to try and definitely look forward to eating them here in 2021!

Yelp
This place is SO GOOD! We've been here twice in a week now we have ordered: Super Agila, Mega Chiva, Cubano, and Haragana. They are all so delicious and I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The Cubano is definitely the most popular item, and the Haragana is great as a "brunch sandwich" - it comes with eggs, bacon, avocado, etc. Most of their tortas clock in at $13-16, but they're good for 1.5-2 meals each depending on how hungry you are, so not a bad price. The people here are super nice and service is quick whether you order in person or online. Please do note it's pretty much just a to-go storefront - we just ate in our car because we didn't want to wait until we got home lol. Highly highly recommend this place if you like Mexican food!

Ivan B.

Yelp
The best tortas in the peninsula. I've been coming here for 15+ years and they never disappoint. There's a little of everything for all kinds of appetites, everyone I bring always leaves satisfied.

Yelp
La maquila torta is fire, and it's like 2 pounds of food. Great little place. Great service. Small place so it's basically just take out.

Yelp
Do not let the neighborhood scare you! This is by far one of the best Torta places I have ever had! They are the definition of a "Hole in the wall" place. I've been going here since 2002 & their Tortas have always been so flavorful! I always order the Raul de Molina which is their Queso de Puerco Torta. Yes, I do mean Headcheese. It is a delicacy, so if your palette can't take it, why are you a foodie then!? My boyfriend had the La del Chino, not because he's chinese lol but because he does like chicken! Their Tortas come with Caramelized onions, Queso fresco, jalapeño, & avocado on a huge, round bolilo bread. They also put the Torta in a panini press and it has the grill marks right on it. There isn't much seating, so Take Out is a must! It is a perfect picnic food. Trust me - your tastebuds won't regret it!

Yelp
This is by far the best torta I have ever had PERIOD! My bf recommended this place and I made my way to Yelp to check out the menu. They have a second location in Redwood City but it was closing before we could get there. This location was open till 9. I decided on ordering over the phone La Eva (grilled steak) torta and my bf got La Cubana (breaded steak, ham, chorizo, pork leg, and turkey sausage) torta. The man taking my phone order was efficient and friendly. I was amazed by the variety of tortas they offered. Even more by the ingredients they put inside their tortas (it was exactly what I was craving). I couldn't contain my excitement to take a bite already. We arrived, paid, and we were on our way. Our tortas were packed in a white bag wrapped up individually. I like this because it allowed the bread to remain crunchy and not get soggy. Opening our tortas I was delighted to see all the ingredients inside the torta. A generous portion of tomato, queso fresco, refried beans, sliced avocado, caramelized onions, mayo, and a spicy sauce. All of this inside a telera bread! I'm speechless at how delicious all of this combined tasted. It sounds like a standard torta but there's so much more that comes with a torta. Consistency of bread, generous toppings, delicious meats, and fresh ingredients. I found all of this inside this torta so yes pretty much the torta of my dreams! Drool!! I'm juiced to try their breakfast tortas and the rest of their tortas on the menu. I will most likely be pulling over next time and enjoy my torta right away with a cold Mexican soda! Cheers!!

They made me love, tortas and crave them every day. My favorite is La Sophia. Nothing tops their tortas.. I also just love the ambience and how the owners make you feel welcome. It makes you want to go back for the tortas and for amazing customer service.

Yelp
Must try the Torta Cubana !!! On the pricy side but the portions justify it. Definitely a place to add to your regular monthly visits.

Don't expect burritos, enchiladas, or anything of that nature. However, they do make pretty good tortes. Check them out..

Yelp
La Casita Chilanga has become a benchmark for Tortas and other Mexico City favorites . This was the first place I tried a cubana growing up in Redwood City. The quality and great customer service has been consistent for more than decade now . So this is a another long over due review ! I would recommend anyone a Cubana torta bc you can get one for lunch and then get heat up the rest for dinner. That's a great value for your buck ! Don't hesitate to come in and order their food , it is small shop but people are polite and they make feel welcome.

Yelp
Always go to the hole in the wall with the long line (is my rule of thumb). Got the Cubana Torta. Amazing flavor and preparation. I'm a big eater and I almost couldn't finish it. I would say for normal adults one sandwich is enough for two people. Therefore this gets 5 stars not just for food quality but also the value given the large quantity. I'll definitely return. Perfect for Covid dining as it is carry out only. No space to eat in.

Rutger H.

Yelp
I have loved this place for 20 years. The Tortas are worth the price of admission. It's just authentic Chilanga.
google avatar

Kim N.

Yelp
I guess this is the "original" location and it shows. This place is but a little hut in the industrialized section of Middlefield road in Redwood City. Even though the marquee outside advertises Tacos and Tortas, there are no tacos. It's all Tortas here and from the menu in Spanish: - LA CUBANA pierna, jamon ahumado, milanesa de res, queso de puerco y salchicha de pavo - LA SOFIA VERGARA pechuga de pollo empanizada - LA MILAN milanesa de res - LA EVA de costilla asada - LA TESORITO de pierna de puerco ahumada - LA HAWAIIANA de jamn, queso y pina - LA DEL CHAVO DEL 8 de jamn ahumado - LA DEL GORDO Y EDUARDO La unica que lleva todo y con huevos - LA ENCAJOSA de chorizo - LA METICHE de chorizo con huevo - LA JUGUETONA de salchicha de pavo - LA SUSPIRO DE MONJA de salchicha con huevo - LA BLANCA NIEVES de queso blanco - LA PANCHO VILLA de puro huevo My favorite named Torta up there is the Sofia Vergara. For those of you who don't know, she's a model from Colombia with rather large breasts, so it's hilarious that they would name their Chicken Breast sandwich after her. That's what my co-worker decided to have even though he wasn't privy to the joke. I had the Cubano which was ham, pork, sausage and breaded steak; basically the meat works. All sandwiches come with queso fresco, avocado, spicy chile mayo, jalapenos on top of this awesome very light bread. Super hugeg, tasty sandwiches for very cheap prices. As I said earlier this place is literally a hut. You can sit maybe 8 people tops in the crowded front area. After that it's literally the counter and the grill/kitchen in the back. The guys there are super friendly and for style points they have the "La Casita Chilanga VW Bus" outside. Just make sure when you go that it's not too hot outside because not only is this space small I don't think they have AC so the doors and windows are always wide open. 4.5 stars.

Yelp
**3.5 Stars** La Casita Chilanga is a literal hut of a restaurant. With only three small tables and nestled along an industrialized section of Middlefield Road in Redwood City, the unassuming structure adorned with the colors of the Mexican flag (green, white, and red) is an homage to a comfort food straight from Mexico City: the torta. For those unfamiliar, the torta is an impressively-sized sandwich served with an array of delicious ingredients. The roundish french roll is toasted on a press, similar to a Cuban sandwich, and served hot with a grilled selection of meats and vegetables. One of the most popular versions here is the traditional cuban sandwich, nicknamed "La Niurka," on the menu after a popular attractive actress from Mexico City. It literally has a kitchen sink of ingredients: leg, smoked ham, breaded veal cutlet, pork, cheese, and turkey sausage. Toppings of avocado, tomato, onions, some jalapeno peppers for kick, and a nice spicy chili mayo round out the sandwich. At $9.50, the price may sound high, but the portion size is enough for two meals. On any given day, it's easy to be the only non-Spanish speaking customer here, so it's clear the place is authentic. The San Francisco Chronicle named Casita Chilanga a notable Bargain Bite of the Bay Area and if you enjoy your meals hearty, like soccer (playing continuously on the small tv in the hut), or simply enjoy trying new cuisine, La Casita Chilanga is definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
People apparently come here for the sandwiches (tortas). We went here specifically for the saudero taco. The place is tiny- mostly serving a brisk takeout crowd. We actually waited for what seemed an eternity for our two tacos. But when they came we weren't disappointed. Very tasty! Next time we'll try the tortas...
google avatar

Allister D.

Yelp
My boy Nate brought me here for their famous Cubano sandwich. Their version of the sandwich is much different than the authentic type. It's a Mexican Version which consists of: Bacon, ham, chicken, steak, and more. The bread is pocket-type which holds a lot of these ingredients/toppings. I honestly loved this Cubano sandwich. This will fill a person up in no time! It's filling, full of flavors, portion is huge and price is just right with about $10-$11. I'd definitely come back for more! The real version of the Cubano sandwich is much slimmer with less toppings but more flavorful which id rather have more but this version is good and worth trying!

Yelp
Hands down thee best Torta I've had in awhile living here in the Bay!!! Multiple meats and packing lots of Flavor... Special sauce really adds that nice heat at the end of each bite!

Yelp
Best tortas ever huge portions my favorite is the Hawaiian and the cuban you will definitely love them

Yelp
Small spot, big tortas. I got the cubana. Enjoyed the pickles and their bread is pretty good too.

M R.

Yelp
I have been going there for years and their tortas never fail to amaze me. I love their secret aeoli and that casita chilanga trademark type flavor that they have. Keep up the authenticity La Casita!
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
How is this place not more well known? Delicious and massive tortas. It was my first time so I ordered the cubana and it did not disappoint. Massive sandwich loaded with lots of delicious meats. Enough to feed 2 normal people or one really hungry person. Also had the tacos. They were pretty average in my opinion. Not bad but the tortas outshined them.

Sofia M.

Yelp
Love this place but looks like they have new people working. Do not listen when i give my simple order and then get upset with me when i tell them its wrong. I am very patient when it comes to something like this because I understand accidents happens but to be yelled at when i just want it made the correct way. Sad that the service doesn't match how good the food is.

Brando V.

Yelp
Awesome tortas, it's a small shop but the flavor of every bite makes you want to come back for more
google avatar

Eva V.

Yelp
I order a torta, the person whom answer the phone said it was going to be ready in 20 minutes, once I got there they said they didn't have my order. I called to make sure I call the right place (Redwood City on Middlefield) and it was the right place. When I talk to one of the people there over the phone, he said that the person who took my order he didn't write it and now I am waiting 10 more minutes. What gets me more angry is that they didn't even apologies. Casita Chilanga on El camino would never do this kind of big mistakes. Angry customer.

Alvin K.

Yelp
A Redwood City gem. Amazing and big tortas at a reasonable price. I used to think I was a burrito guy but I crave tortas from here more so than burritos now. I'd recommend calling ahead so you can just pickup and pay when you get there.
google avatar

Ed J.

Yelp
Red, white, green toolshed? Um, looks divey, looks tasty Transcendent tortas
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
Best tortas hands down. Can't go wrong with the mega chiva or the all time favorite chilanga.
google avatar

Taline M.

Yelp
The tortas here deserve five stars but their other food deserves three so I'm taking the average and going with 4 stars! I think this restaurant looks much nicer on the inside than the outside so don't be off by the exterior (I kind of didn't even realize it was a restaurant the first time I passed by). The service here is friendly and prompt and I think helpful in explaining the menu or guiding you in deciding what to order. If you are in the area and craving a torta, come here for sure! Otherwise, maybe try other nearby eateries that offer Mexican food.
