14 Best Pupusas Around D.C., According to Eater Editors | Eater DC

"Longtime pupuseria La Casita serves pupusas around the clock at locations in Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, and La Cosecha in Union Market (sadly, they’re no longer available at Nats Park). Some of the area’s best, they have a great filling to masa ratio and a delicate curtido for balance." - Tim Ebner

Google
Pan con pollo was delicious! Great customer service. It gets packed during lunch time and there is also carry out option . Pupusas are not salty nor greasy. Extra parking can be found across the street of the restaurant.

Anya Nielson

Google
These were the best pupusas I've had anywhere in the states. We got a mix of different kinds and every one of them was incredible. Absolutely worth the hassle of finding parking.

Al G Nau

Google
One of the best beef soups, caldo de carne. The soup includes 2-3 pieces of beef, yuca, squash, corn, plantain, carrots, green beans, cilantro, and a tortilla and limes. Very tasty and delicious. Parking is scarce, you may have to park on neighborhood streets.

Google
Ordered via Uber Eats and food quality was very good. Cheese Quesadillas were great but the cuisine is maybe not my type.

Google
This restaurant truly touched my heart. The cozy house-themed setting immediately brought back memories of my childhood the decorations, the music, and the warm atmosphere all reminded me of home in my country. The flavors in the food were incredibly nostalgic, just like the dishes my aunts and grandmothers used to make when I was little. Everything was delicious and full of love. I absolutely loved the experience and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a taste of home.

Google
La Casita is one of my favorite go-to spots. The space is cute with a cozy theme, and the staff is always kind and welcoming. I usually dine in because the atmosphere adds so much to the experience. The food is consistently fresh and flavorful, and their shrimp dishes are especially well done. Everything feels made with care, and the service makes you want to come back.

Google
I wanted to go in to dine in and just finding parking was a feat of its own. The two businesses on either side have their own lots and the is only a few spaces out front of the restaurant. Due to the parking I opted to order take out. I got the Maryland pupusa and the Ceviche mixto. Both were great! Really wish their was more parking. I would love to recommend to others, but the parking is my only concern really.

J Leung

Google
Delicious and authentic. Came on a Sunday late afternoon and the place was packed and take out was continuous. Service slow. Place dirty but must have been hard to keep up with so many people.

Yelp
Best pupusas I've ever had. The flavor within the masa corn flour and individual fillings are tasty and I like how the pupusas are filled to the brim. I went with Salvadoran friends and they even said this is the best they've had besides their own mother. I tried 4 pupusas- Revuelta, 2 Frijoles con Queso, and Ayote con Queso. The frijoles con Queso were my favorite and the Revuelta was shockingly my least favorite- nothing bad just I preferred the delicious bean or veggie taste. I used to seriously question if I enjoyed pupusas until I tried La Casita- I highly recommend pupusa enthusiasts or anyone to come here. The only thing I wish had more flavor was their curtido and salsa. Their Tamal Pizque was simple yet delicious. Their Empanada de Plátano was sweet with a milk pudding filling- the filling wasn't too sweet, but it was still delicious. It was my first time trying Atol de Elote and it was sweet, creamy, and heavenly. Great to drink on a cold, winter night or in general. I definitely will be searching places that serve Atol de Elote now. Overall, great low-key place with authentic El Salvadorian dishes. This place is approved by my picky flavor palette and by various Salvadorans who went with me.

Yelp
I really enjoy La Casita. I've been to their other locations, but never this one until recently. Here, you order at the counter and they bring your order to you. There is a decent amount of seating. Service is friendly. I ordered my usual Salvadoran fare--yuca con chicharron and a queso pupusa. The pupusa was perfect, though I could always use more curtido. I loved my crisp yuca and pork, which was satisfying. My boyfriend liked his enchiladas tipicas. We both appreciated the Jarritos offerings. There is a pantry section as well, and I'm looking forward to returning to explore that, along with other menu items.

Yelp
This is a place to have a delicious Hispanic food. All my friends enjoyed the pupusas, tacos, drinks and the service don't took too much for all of us
google avatar

Sasha A.

Yelp
We got the chicken sandwhich (pan de pollo) and it was delicious and messy! The chicken and cheese pupusa and pork pupusa were also great. We ordered everything to go online and it was a quick turnaround.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
It was bustling on a weekend for lunch. They serve more than just pupusas, and they even offer a variety of Latin American groceries. The pupusas were good but I've had better
google avatar

Jannet C.

Yelp
This place was great authentic Salvation food. I got 3 pupusas; a loroco blossoms, pork and cheese and a crab. Everything was made fresh. I like that they have a variety of them to choose from. I haven't seen crab pupusas anywhere else. The dining area is spacious. You order at the counter and they bring it to you. The fried fish and chicurrone pork looks good. I will be back to try those items.

Michaellyn M.

Yelp
It was pretty good. The Tamarindo drink was delicious, as was the fresh corn tamale. The crab pupusa was just ok. Nice homey place, very inexpensive.

Yelp
I decided to try something new from Uber eats. Long story short, I ended up ordering the same thing the next day and theeeeen I went to the actual restaurant the following week! That's how good it was lol. I ordered the steak and shrimp meal with refried beans and rice...cooked to perfection.

Yelp
We celebrated National Pupusa Day (yes, it is a thing) this past Sunday with a ten pack of hot and tasty pupusas. It was easy ordering on line. I planned for curb side pickup, but their tiny parking area was jam-packed with cars waiting for their goods. I park in the auto shop lot next door (they were closed) and left my friend sitting shotgun. Since I already paid it was easy since they were boxed and ready. We got a free 2 liter bottle of Kolashapan Salvadoran soda. (I let my friend take it home.) We got loroco (flower buds) and squash pupusas. Both were tasty, but tasted similar. Served with curtido (spicy slaw) and salsa roja for added flavor. We had plenty left for future meals. The pupusas were under $2.50 each, so an inexpensive treat. A big #ThankYouThursday2021 to the owners for making delicious pupusas at an affordable price.
google avatar

Rider N.

Yelp
Not a good place I've try several times and the owner have even asked to remove the review, I have done it before but the service and quality sucks so what can I do
google avatar

Bingo F.

Yelp
My friend and I ate here last week, and I can't stop thinking about it. The Yuca con Chicharron was the best I've ever had. The yuca was cooked to perfection and the pork has an amazing flavor & texture. I also had a delicious papusa. Lastly the Horchata was the perfect blend of flavor & sweetness. The staff was very friendly & accommodating, the restaurant has a great vibe and I can't wait to return.
google avatar

Carolina S.

Yelp
We went there on a Thursday night right before they closed and the staff was very nice and helpful. There was still a few couples having dinner and even a couple that walked in after us. They have music playing and also large screen TV's. We ordered 3 of the pupusas and the carne asada plate. All of it was delicious and we will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Excelente servicio, excelente comida. Los mejores panes con pollo salvadoreños del área. Excellent service, excellent food. The best Salvadorian chicken sandwich of the area.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Saw this spot on "The Best Thing I ever Ate" for their Pupusas so had to give them a try. A smaller place off the beaten path. The lady who I spoke with for my pickup order was as patient and nice as can be answering my questions and providing multiple recommendations. Ended up ordering a few varieties of the Pupusas. We liked the Chicken, Spinach & Squash the most. Fillings were generous with the rich Masa dough delivering the pure comfort food experience. We also ordered a couple of tacos (steak and chicken) & Empanadas which were excellent! They also offer breakfast as well the desserts looked delicious (next time) I've found my Pupusa spot when in Silver Spring!
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Came here for the first time on a Tuesday night 3/14/23 and I'm confident they'll be seeing me around plenty more. My first time eating Salvadoran cuisine; very pleased by the flavors, quality, and price. Ordered 5 pupusas, a tiras de costilla platter, and a hearty sopa de res. The star was definitely the tiras de costilla platter. Even had extras of everything to take home. Very welcoming staff and the market in the restaurant is just so convenient.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
My first bite of pupusa literally gave me the freeze in your place in silence with a big stare and the big "MmmMmMMM!!!" Lol Where has these pupusa been all my life? It's so damn good! Also! It's burning hot! So take a few minutes to let it cool before eating. Burnt the roof of my mouth which lasted all day lol but I regret nothing! I would eat this everyday if I didn't care about my jeans fitting lol Maybe I'll eat it every week instead
google avatar

Aminah O.

Yelp
live music was a bit loud but I loved it. The pupusas were amazing and the food was ready quick!
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
It's hot, fast, and amazing for the price! I could see this being a go-to for fast, budget-friendly local business to support. The food quantity is fair, the cooking techniques were on par, the service was kind and fast. Surprisingly enough the husband liked the bean & cheese over the chicken & cheese, but overall didn't set off our flavor receptors. It was a fun departure from our normal flavors. Especially for $2-3 each!

Adrianna F.

Yelp
The prices? Crazy, the flavors, had my soul leave my body. Trust my boyfriend thought he had lost me as I fully died in the arms of all the vegan options I had gotten. Some of the best darn food I've had from any culture ever. All the best food stories start with a sketch area. My boyfriend and I will for sure be coming back to break off another check

Isabella A.

Yelp
The Best Pupusas I've ever had. The service is always nice and efficient. I crave these pupusas all the time. Parking usually very easy to find.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
I am a big fan of this place in all of its locations. This location is my favorite because the prices are AMAZING! I just want to let La Casita know that whoever was making the carne yesterday put waaaaaay too much soy sauce. It tasted like pure soy sauce, and that's not the way it is supposed to be. It usually balanced with some acid like lime and pineapple juice. Please don't change the recipe and please let the chef know the correct marinade. I still leave 5 stars because I really hope this is an untrained chef. mistake. But if it taste like this next time, I would not give more than 2 stars.
google avatar

Serge S.

Yelp
THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST!!!! If you like pupusas and tamales that's the spot all locals know about! They have many other items on the menu, but pupusas are the bomb!
google avatar

Brynt L.

Yelp
I looked up the best papusas in the area, and La Casita was at the top of the list so I had to check them out. I must say it didn't disappoint! The service was friendly and prices were very reasonable. When you walk into the dining area it almost feels like you're at someone's house. The papusas are made to order and come out piping hot! They're served with a slaw (curtido) which is a must have! I usually order the chicken and cheese with a side of beans too. This place has become a regular stop for me and a place I often bring friends too.
google avatar

Marcela G.

Yelp
So I decided to go to La casita for dinner and ordered. Bisket encebollado; and the meat was sooo tough and thick not good sorry. The atol de elote had a wonderful flavor and very hot (a little too sweet). My daughter ordered horchata she liked it.
google avatar

Darryl B.

Yelp
We ordered everything on their plant based menu ( pupusa not in picture) A very filling meal for 2 around $38. The avocado bowl is really good I just wish that there was more than half an avocado in the avocado bowl The beyond pastelito turnover was ok the bread crust was good but I think the meatless meat lacked the love or pepper?? that they put in other dishes The plantain bites , tamal pizque and pupusa were all delicious P.s I hope they can make a horchata with non dairy milk to complete the plant based menu
google avatar

Adrienne L.

Yelp
I was driving from Baltimore to DC, was stuck in traffic and hungry. I got some pupusas and they were made in about 20 mins. I came right on time and they were hot and delicious! I ate two pieces in the car. Brought back the various flavors and had my fiancé try. We love especially the chicken ones!
google avatar

Maria F.

Yelp
Excellent Pupusas, friendly staff, quick service, good value. The pupusas are always fresh, warm melt in your mouth.

Eric B.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and very authentic. Service can vary depending on how busy they are obviously. The ambiance is very family oriented. The prices are a bit steep but it's completely worth every cent.
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
They have maybe the best chicken sandwich I have ever eaten. Every time I drive past I think about stopping just for that sandwich!
google avatar

Sedia T.

Yelp
I ordered from this place today and I was disappointed. I ordered many different things to try so I'll just go through them. Pupusa de queso - this was good I would've like more cheese but I liked it Pupusa de pollo - this was good too Platanos Fritos - thinly sliced and evenly cooked so it was good Yuca and chicharron - I could only eat the yuca. The meat was so fried it was powdery all the way through Horchata - it wasn't good but maybe ice melted in it on the way idk
google avatar

Shain O.

Yelp
The pupusas are crisp, well-filled, and delicious. But every time we've dined in, the wait times have been really long and when we've asked for an update on our orders, we've never gotten clear answers. The last time we were there, the restaurant was only about a third full, but it took--I kid you not--at least 40 minutes for us to get our order of 3 pupusas and 2 tamales...

Marina T.

Yelp
After years of inconsistent experiences-let's face it, the food is mediocre but cheap, and there is always, always an inexplicable wait-I'm fed up! I've been a customer since the early 2000's after discovering this 'hole in the wall' spot with authentic, cheap, Central American food. Which over the years has declined with its popularity and growth of it's indoor market. It's been 17 days since I filed complaints about a botched online order placed through Google/Toast which was then handed off to Doordash for delivery. At no point during the ordering process was I informed this would be the case. The restaurant is not on Doordash. If they were, I would've ordered through my Doordash membership account to save on the delivery fee, which by the way was not included in the breakdown of the total due for my order at checkout. It wasn't until I saw the paper receipt attached to my order, that I saw the itemized delivery fee added to my total. Google, nor Toast, has responded. Doordash only referred me back to the restaurant as the order was not placed through them. I've explained my issue to three different staff members of the restaurant. My order was delivered an hour after the promise time, and the order I received was also not correct. 30 minutes after the promise time, I called the restaurant and was told my order was ready and being packed up for delivery. Only to be told 20 minutes later by the delivery driver that he was still waiting for my order. After making four follow up attempts to speak to the manager, I'm still waiting...
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service, plus a little grocery while you wait the short time for your order. Dine in or carry out.
google avatar

Blimye E.

Yelp
Food is good, depends on what you get and what you like. alittle pricey but what isn't now in days. Service can be slow depending on the day. Try the smoothies! They have a point system in place for rewards which is good! Parking is very little. Extra parking across the street Regal paint center.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
I'm rating them a 4 because the food is a hit or miss. We buy food and drinks fairly often, but I would say every 3rd or 4th visit something is off. Sometimes the tamales aren't as good, or the papusas have too much filling leaking out, or the curtido isn't as flavorful as it usually is. I feel like it depends on the day and who's back there, but it's never been enough of an issue for us to stop going. With that said, the drinks are ALWAYS good. Always. Marañon is my favorite, but the horchata and tamarindo are really good too. If you're in the mood for alcohol, get the Blue Agave and thank me later :D There's no pictures because I dive headfirst when the food arrives. Sorry not sorry.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
This is definitely one of those places where people give you funny looks if you don't speak Spanish. But hey, that's where you go for the real stuff. What I came for was pupusas, perhaps my favorite of various Latin American corn-based contraptions, and the ones they produced here were certainly tasty. They had plenty of vegetarian options, but they all had cheese, so this is one of those places where it will be a bit more of a stretch for those avoiding dairy. I am not huge on ordering fruit juices at restaurants, but I took a recommendation on one, and it was really quite fantastic, and whatever combination of fruit it was, it had some whole fruit pieces and pulp that I waited to finish until the ice melted. It's a utilitarian place, but clean and big inside. Parking in front of it looks dicey, but the sign on the door says you can park at the lot on the other side of the street (which of course you can't read until you walk up there, so I'm telling you now). I'd say it's worth the drive.
google avatar

Adria M.

Yelp
Was excited to find vegan options here! Tasted good, my favorite was the plantain/avocado bowl. I prefer Gardein to Beyond meat but other than that, will be back.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Highly recommend for a quick and filling breakfast. My brother and I both ordered Numero Cuatro (think steak and egg)... Included steak, two eggs, potatoes, refried beans, and a tortilla. We ordered coffee's too, all for around $24. You leave full & caffeinated. What could be better?!
google avatar

Amani E.

Yelp
Affordable AND great quality. I frequently go to this location of La Casita and the service is always A+. I try something new each time I come and am consistently pleased. Great local spot - a must try!

Tay C.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh every time we stop by. All the way from Michigan. Planning to grab some before we head back too.
google avatar

Jeanne H.

Yelp
Great local home kitchen vibe pupusas and soup! Fun and yummy foods and friendly service.
google avatar

Tiahna P.

Yelp
Super delicious! I loved every bite of my cheese and bean (queso con frijoles) pupusas and my bean tamal! It was so delicious. The masa was a good color. The pupusas didn't have a bunch of burnt cheese around them. Very satisfying presentation. I have my tres leches cake piece in the fridge for later. I've added my receipt to this review to show the affordability of the food items. This is definitely a place that serves good food and I could afford to become a regular at. A very good combination. This was ordered during COVID, when most places are restricted to delivery or pick up, so I'm not too happy that I paid more than $7 for my delivery. As you can see, that was more expensive than any one food item. It's definitely something to consider when I'm choosing a delivery dinner while at home over ordering take out while I'm running errands.
google avatar

Neyda B.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! We came in on a rainy day for a good sopa de res. Food was fresh and delicioso like always. The service was on point like always.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
Very good pupusas at a reasonable price. Best pupusas I've ever had. We ordered the tamales and chicken and beef pupusas. The tamales were OK. The filling was light and floury with a touch of chicken flavor. These definitely did not impress me as much as the pupusas. The pupusas were excellent. The crust is corn flour, not not overly gritty. The inner side of the crust is like grilled cheese with a nice oily glaze that wasn't overpowering. The inside of the pupusa has generous chunks of freshly grilled meats and lots of charred cheese. This place is doing real El Salvadorian food well for the contemporary American setting without sacrificing on original recipes and language. Their restaurant is clean, efficient, and well-lit without pandering to the "hip-ethnic" fast casual dining trend that adulterates any modicum of culture with the expectations of American styling and culinary needs. This place will culturally challenge your senses enough, while still being comfortable and accessible.

Eric D.

Yelp
Have not been here for many years. What used to be a hole in the wall is much nicer. The food is not as good as I remember. Ordered pollo guisado (a chicken and vegetable stew) and a loroco and cheese pupusa. Both were lacking flavor. Not sure why everyone raves about the pupusas. Accompanying curtado and salsa (oddly mixed in same container) was fairly tasteless. There are many restaurants in Annapolis and along East-West highway that offer far better.

Yelp
This place is so amazing!! Coming from the southwest, I have high expectations and a deep love for tacos. I've searched high and low for authentic tacos, and this place was recommended. My boyfriend and I first came Friday, and it was so good that we went again Saturday! Tacos -- steak tacos are the best. Hands down. So juicy, packed, and a lot of flavor. We also tried the chicken and shrimp tacos, which were alright. I'd def only order steak. Pupusas -- we ordered pork and cheese, and chicken and cheese. I've never had a pupusa before, so I really enjoyed the pork and cheese mix. They def pack it, and it's on the heavy side. But it's delicious! I had two pupusas and two tacos, and it def filled my very large appetite! Drinks -- I tried the pineapple/apple/cantaloupe drink and it was super refreshing. The drink price is a steal too. I also tried the banana smoothie and it was amazing, and fit the bill for my sweet tooth. Since I don't live too far, I'll definitely be a regular. Even if I moved, I'd still be a regular to this restaurant! Parking situation is a lil confusing - people say the lot across the street is not safe vs. safe?? But it's always clean with friendly staff!

Cynthia K.

Yelp
This place is really a hidden gem! I was very excited to try their pupusas, tacos, and elote!! I was most excited about the elote, but to my disappointment they did not have any when I had arrived. I went around 7pm, so next time I plan on going earlier. My boyfriend and I ordered 7 pupusas (2 beef+cheese, 1 cheese only, 1 pork+cheese, 1 ayote+cheese, 1 chicken+cheese, and 1 pork+beans+cheese) and beef taco platter (came with two sides of rice because i did not want beans). My favorite pupusas were beef, ayote, and pork. The taco platter was very good as well, super filling! As for dessert we ordered one horchata and one watermelon smoothie. The horchata was okay in my opinion, I have tasted better ones. But my watermelon smoothie was SOOO good! It tastes like a watermelon that is just juiced. It was very sweet and refreshing after a savory meal! You do have to wait a while for the food and drinks because they are mostly all made to order. I would definitely come again!

Yelp
La Casita Pupuseria & Market has become one of our favorite breakfast spots. We typically order with Uber Eats but it is very close to downtown Silver Spring, MD. They have minimal parking in front, but offer more in the back. We ordered: -Numero uno with eggs picado. This comes with fried red beans, fried plantains, fresh crema and french bread. -Desayuno Deshilada. Pulled steak strips sauteed with two eggs, tomato, onion, and green pepper. Served with avocado, crema, seasoned rice, fried red beans and a handmade tortilla. -tacos de chorizo -Drinks: Horchata (cinnamon milk flavor), Cebada (strawberry cinnamon barley flavors), and tamarind (sweet yet sour citrus flavors) Everything is always delicious! When we have visited the restaurant, they are very friendly and appreciative. Everything is made fresh in the kitchen and the place has a family, authentic vibe. I highly recommend going!

Yelp
If you need a babysitter in California, hire a CA-sita. But if you're out here in DC, skip the sitter and take your kids to this incredible and adorable Salvadoran restaurant in Silver Spring - one of the 10 best places to eat in the DMV. What to get: Banana Shake, Pupusas, Tamales What not to get: Surprised by how long you have to wait What else: And everybody's getting fat on their food except Mama Casita It has plenty of space, nice decor, lots of food options and great drinks. A truly great place for a meal for trendy folks and families alike (no, you can't be both) (jk). The service is extremely friendly as well. Salvadoran Pupusas are the staple of the local cuisine and are wonderful fried discs of deliciousness. Salvadoran Tamales are much better - more moist and flavourful - than the Mexican kind, largely because they're wrapped in wet banana leaves instead of dry corn husks that soak up all the moisture. So Casita. One of the very best places to eat in the DC area, with good pupusas and magnificent drinks, particularly the banana shake (swoon). The service is extremely slow, but the people are lovely, the prices are rock-bottom dirt-cheap, and the products are heavenly. There are plenty of Salvadoran places in these parts but this is rightly considered as one of the very best, and it's certainly one of the best Banana drinks I've ever had. If you come over to my place later, I can offer you a different kind of banana drink. And if you want to visit a certain area of DC, I suggest visiting the Pupus-area.
