Best Places to Dine in NoMa and Around Union Market | Eater DC

"This pupuseria sells delicious takes on the classic stuffed corn patties, as well as a fried yuca and chicharron plate and carne asada platters. Specials include experimental takes on vegan pupusas and other unexpected fillings, like lump crab meat. If you’re craving a different masa-encased dish, the arepas next door at Arepa Zone also make a delightful meal." - Emily Venezky

Colada Shop Partners Will Bring a Pan-Latin Bar to D.C.’s Next Massive Market - Eater DC

"This fast-casual take on the traditional pupuseria will offer street foods inspired by those found inside a traditional large open market. The small, 210-square-foot Salvadoran stall will be helmed by chef Iris Veronica Jimenez, whose family entered the D.C. scene in 1984 with a market in Adams Morgan." - Tierney Plumb

I've come twice, once for pupusas, and today for tacos. The pupusas are delicious. They're warm and filled well. I'd like a little more slaw and sauce, but ultimately very good. The tacos made me sad. They look pretty good, but the tortillas were very thick (almost like an empty pupusa, but dry), and had very little meat on them. They didn't come with any salsa. The rice and beans were quite good though. Skip the tacos, grab some pupusas.

I checked out this small but incredible family restaurant from El Salvador. They specialize in pupusa‘s and I tried the incredible chicken and cheese. Don’t judge me I just had a craving. Great food and great packaging. They clearly try to be sustainably conscious by using recycled containers and utensils. Everything was package great. The carrots and cabbage is not coleslaw but there’s definitely a vinegar base. And the red sauce also has a vinaigrette flavor to it. Definitely one to try and great price at four dollars!

Google
The pupusas were handmade to order. They came out hot. Ordered a variety from queso con loroco, revuelta, and mixta. They were all delicious. Came during dinner time and there wasn't a rush, plenty of seating to be found. Only bummer was there was no ensalada on the menu. Nice location, easy to get to on the metro. Would visit this place again and recommend to others.

Google
I placed an order on Postmates for a "buy one, get one free" pupusa revuelta and two large horchatas. However, my order was not completed, and I received small horchatas instead. The food and drinks did not taste good. The manager from La Casita was supposed to call me, but I never received a call.

Andrew Blank

Google
20 mins after order, asked cashier about status - she said they would text when ready. 45 mins after order, asked cashier again - my order had been ready and waiting for who knows how long. No text was ever sent. Disappointing for a place that promotes everything being “made fresh” to be forced into having food that had been sitting in a warmer, and would’ve stayed there forever if not for repeated inquiries. Cashiers shouldn’t lie to customers. When the process fails, customers should receive a refund. I’m bummed I didn’t have a chance to try fresh food.

Google
Came here to get some pupusa as I had been craving some for a while! We came on a busy Sunday, and the wait wasn’t too bad considering they make the pupusas from scratch. The pupusa themselves were good! For more detailed reviews and recommendations of local DMV restaurants, follow me on Instagram at @guidetothedmv !!

Google
This place is great. I really enjoyed the chorizo, pollo, and revuelta pupusas. My qualm is that the food lacks flavor. It’s like they are holding back on the season. Not talking about salt. The saltiness is there but seasoning of the meat

Mauricio Esquivel

Google
The Sweet EMPANADAS DE LECHE are really bad, it doesn’t taste like empanadas. The platain taste good but the LECHE inside is the worse ever, please change the recipe because I wasted my money, I bought 2 orders yesterday and only tried 1 and threw the others into a trash can. Pupusas are good, horchata is delicious, but it will be much better if they put the CURTIDO AND SALSA on the side because they put everything on top of the pupusas and is very difficult to eat.

Yelp
This is an excellent spot for pupusas! After an underwhelming lunch at Union Market, I decided to walk over and try something at La Cosecha. I noticed the pupusas being offered and couldn't resist. Wow, they were great! I had a Pupusa de Queso and Mixta and they were both excellent. The queso was filled with the perfect amount of cheese for very good richness and was melty goodness inside. The second pupusa was a mix of meat, beans and cheese, creating a perfect balance of savory flavors and differing textures. They arrived very hot, which confirmed their freshness. The price point is also very good since 2 - 3 will fill you up and isn't super expensive. Definitely visit this place for incredible food!

Yelp
Extremely tasty food hall in NoMa with some absolutely delicious appetizers and entrees! Service was very quick and kind. There were so many good options to choose from; every pupusa was stellar!
google avatar

Jacintha T.

Yelp
Pupusa Revuelta Very thin, which was thinner than I've had before from other pupusa vendors. The pork was extremely bland, like it tasted as if it wasn't seasoned at all. Just not my jam as I've had better. Maybe it was an off night?
google avatar

Kaya A.

Yelp
Their pupusas are melt-in-your-mouth good. The vegan one was so flavorful and the vegan cheese melted just right. The price was very reasonable, I just wish it was bigger because I didn't want to stop eating it!
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
Great place to grab delicious food to go with a drink from one of the nearby bars. The yuca and chicharrón was exactly what I was craving. And the portion you get for $10?! Hard to find in DC. The pupusas were also delicious and a great value. The staff were also very kind during our limited interaction. Having an apartment in NOMA means I'll be frequenting this spot for sure.

Yelp
Itinially I was confused about where this was located and eventually realized it was inside Union Market/Cosecha. The vibes are very relaxing and laid back. They have phenomenal papusas and really good ceviche. Service is good and food comes out relatively quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Good things come to those who wait. This place always has the longest line at La Cosecha but don't let that scare you, take it as a sign from God. The 3 for $12.50 deal might be the best value in DC where normally you get a wedge of lemon for $63.25. I got spinach and cheese, chicken and cheese and pork bean and cheese. The spinach was surprisingly awesome, I couldn't get the chicken in my mouth fast enough and the pork was good. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Yelp
La Casita Pupuseria is a food stand inside La Cosecha and easy to miss because it's tucked near the back along with a few other stalls. The line was long this past Friday evening, which worked out because I had a hard time choosing the pupusas I wanted to try. I ended up... never getting the pupusas. The nice server who took my order recommended the Carne Asada Callejera so I decided to go with that instead, HAHA. CARNE ASADA CALLEJERA (GRILLED STEAK) - 15.95 This came in a neatly packed in a compartmental takeout container where there were thin slices of grilled steak on a bed of seasoned white rice. For my sides, I got frijoles refrito (refried beans) and Casita salad (lettuce, tomatoes and carrots). The grilled steak was very flavorful and well salted. It was a bit tough and chewy, which was my only quip. It went so well with the seasoned rice (which is enjoyable on its own). I really liked the frijoles refrito -- definitely my favorite part of the meal! The Casita salad was nothing out of the ordinary, but served as a refreshing and cleansing side in the midst of the steak, rice, and beans. Overall, great option and pretty filling. I'd recommend. I'll get the pupusas next time... haha.

Yelp
Visited 7/30/24. Located in La Cosita marketplace, this stall had some great options and I ended up going with the steak tacos (comes with two tacos, rice, and beans). Waited for about 10-12 minutes and then the buzzer went off. The steak in the tacos was my favorite part as it was flavorful and cooked well. A bit of fat but can't complain too much. The shells themselves are more "pupusa-styled", meaning they are thicker and more dense so if you like a thinner taco this may not be for you. Due to the thickness I did find myself kind of wanting for more liquid in the taco to kind of soak it up a bit and make it less dry. Maybe like an avocado crema vs. the avocado in the taco or a different salsa in place of the pico? The shining star of this dish was the side of beans. I'm not even a huge bean person but I found myself constantly coming back for more-would definitely recommend these. I would love to try again and get pupusas in the future! Overall solid flavor and a good pick while at La Cosita.

Yelp
Delicious! We got two chicken, one mix, and the soy chorizo pupusas and they were all great but the soy chorizo was definitely the best. We got it with regular cheese but they have an option for vegan cheese as well! Service was friendly and they give you a buzzer while you wait for your food. They also have a selection of drinks but we didn't get any of those. Would recommend!!!

Yelp
When dining here's a free tip - parking is free in the garage downstairs. You can eat the El Tipico if you're like me and fancies breakfast for dinner. You're welcome.
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite pupusas at La Casita Pupuseria are the classic mixta and the spinach--for the price, these can't be beat these anywhere in DC. The flavor is incredible, and I appreciate that the spice isn't super overwhelming. While you'll be waiting a hot second for your order, like other reviewers have mentioned, these pupusas are well worth the wait. In a place like La Cosecha, with other restaurants and small shops to browse, it doesn't detract at all from the pupusa experience.
google avatar

Nilza M.

Yelp
Phenomenal! Fresh delicious pupusas. Fast friendly service and the vibe in this location is amazing!
google avatar

Naa P.

Yelp
Recently came here for the soy chorizo and mushroom pupusas. Both lacked flavor although they had a lot of cheese both plant based (chorizo) and mushroom pupusas. The red sauce on the side was flavorless, like watery tomato juice. The slaw was pickled and tasted fine. While I appreciate that it was cheesy, I needed more spice, salt and pepper. Perhaps the meat dishes have better flavor.
google avatar

Peggy L.

Yelp
Yuca con chicharron was great - yuca potatoes and light fried pork, a dash of salsa - overall I think it's a great change from my usual order of pupusa (any of those are really good in portion size and its price.
google avatar

Aarti B.

Yelp
Delicious cheesy pupusas - the Pupusa Vegemixta was a fun to try and bursting with flavor! Pupusas are like mini quesadillas from El Salvador. The vegetarian pupusa was filled with black beans, loroco (type of squash), and cheese. While the ingredients are simple, the pupusa was surprisingly flavorful and very filling. It was a bummer that there are no veggies despite the Vegemixta name. The pupusa are pre-made, so you can't customize them. The extensive menu is a bit overwhelming as I was straining my neck staring up at the large menu board and spotted a small menu propped up at the ordering window. So many options! The kicker here is that service isn't very flexible and left me with a sour taste. Will check out the other locations when I'm in the area - Germantown, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring! If you're looking for a culinary experience and to try something unique - go for the pupusa at La Cosecha.

Yelp
I returned for another to go order for dinner on a Friday night. They were busy but the customer service was great and food came out fast. This time I got the Guisadito, Pupasa de Frijol y Queso, and Chorizo Asado. This place is 5/5 everything is super fresh. The Guisadito was packed with flavor.
google avatar

Nina Z.

Yelp
My husband and I grabbed some pupusas here while out in the area doing errands. They made them fresh to order. We ordered mixtas but unfortunately it mainly tasted of beans and a little bit of cheese. I was hoping to get the chicharron flavor but didn't. The bean and cheese was good though and would get that again. I'll definitely try other types of pupusas here next time.
google avatar

Alexandra R.

Yelp
La Casita is a great spot! Their breakfast options are my favorite. I don't know how they make their eggs but they're some of the best eggs I've ever had. I recommend the Numero Uno and Pan de Dia. I've had almost all of their pupusas - I always try their special since its always good and the pollo is my favorite of their constant options. I've also had their bistec and pollo sandwiches, which are good but I don't love them - the flavors don't really do it for me. Finally, their horchata is great! They are very quick, and if you order online, it's always ready at or before the time they say it will be. Service is great, too!
google avatar

Jannell L.

Yelp
Came here for a quick breakfast before heading to DC and got the Revuelta pupusa (3.75). It came with pork chicharron and cheese in the center, between two panfried flatbreads. It also came with a tomato sauce and pickled cabbage and carrots. I thought it was pretty good but I wish the flatbread was crispier and the tomato sauce tasted pretty much like marinara sauce, which threw me off. The pork to cheese ratio inside was pretty good though. It was great for a little snack.

Yelp
La yuca con chicharrón horrible Los chicharrones Secos y sin sabor Si mejoraran eso sería bueno por q la yuca estaba rica

Yelp
I decided to explore this place for lunch, I ordered one carne callejera which I enjoyed for the most part although the pico de gallo did not take very fresh, I also ordered two pupusas, one loroco with cheese and one beans and cheese. I took the pupusas to go to eat at home and although I really liked them I found it very strange that the pupusas did not come with its curtido and the tomato sauce. I've never ever been served and eaten a pupusa without these two elements, they are essential in what makes a pupusa, a pupusa.
google avatar

Priya R.

Yelp
Ordered the Chicken and Cheese Pupusa and the Bean and Cheese Pupusa. Both of them were delicious! Freshly made and tasty!
google avatar

Jose F.

Yelp
First time trying a PUPUSA and Omg! It was so delicious, I had to get another! Not to mention how authentic their horchata and tamarindo drinks taste! Definitely gives us a taste of back home. Although it's Salvadoran food, this is the closest to Mexican food we're going to get out here, LOL! I was not disappointed at all and immediately signed up for their loyalty program. We are definitely coming back!
google avatar

Gi S.

Yelp
I had eaten at their old town Gaithersburg location and loved their pupusas. I was pleasantly surprised to see them at a food hall in DC. I got the mixto, revueltas, and the the beans and cheese - 3 pupusas for about $10. I also got the yucca with chicharon. The pupusas did not disappoint with their savory mix of beans, cheese, and pork. The yucca's crunchy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside paired with chicharon was deep fried heaven. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
They are offering an expanded plant based menu and it is incredible!!! This place is set up in the La Cosecha market (a very cool food hall with many great vendors). There is s ton of indoor and outdoor seating. This is a 2022 covid surge review so we just picked it up and ate outside. We had: Beyond Meat pastelitos- little tasty pastry filled with a nicely seasoned Beyond Meat filling. Very delicious. El soyrizo pupusa- wonderful hearty corn shell with a delightful filling of their own vegan cheese and soyrizo. Nicely flavored especially when dipped in their homemade salsa! Plantain & avocado bowl- a large serving of beans and rice with plantains, avocado and fritos de tortilla. Simple but yummy they were out of the Tamal pizque which was a bummer but we'll be back!

Yelp
source: https://www.lacasitapupusas.com la casita pupuseria's food is made up of deep-rooted traditions in central american culture and we are strong believers that food is a universal language that brings people together. we are about pupusas and so much more. we want to share all the tastes that we experienced growing up and the warmth of having a meal at our family table "buen provecho" my thoughts: just go...go today, go tomorrow, go now, go everyday, lol. seriously though these are really delicious creamy, cheesy, crispy pieces of heaven. i had three different types - red bean, pollo and chicharrón. they were all great, but my personal preference is always the crispy and fatty chicharrón. take my advice and try this asap!! -odl
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
My first bite of pupusa literally gave me the freeze in your place in silence with a big stare and the big "MmmMmMMM!!!" Lol Where has these pupusa been all my life? It's so damn good! Also! It's burning hot! Super cheesy and hearty. So take a few minutes to let it cool before eating. Burnt the roof of my mouth which lasted all day lol but I regret nothing! I would eat this everyday if I didn't care about my jeans fitting lol Maybe I'll eat it every week instead. So worth it!
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
Great little walk up near Union Market. Several walk up kiosks share common seating. This indoor shopping area is near Union Market. Tasty Salvadoran kiosk specializing in pupusas. The special is three of any choice. I enjoyed the pork, chicken, and bean options all with cheese. They made them right off the grill for me. However, they are best eaten slightly cooled. Would have been better with a side of rice and/or beans. They do have two entree options. Give them a try if you find yourself in the neighborhood.
google avatar

bianca b.

Yelp
So delicious! My favorite are any that have refried beans. The chicken was more cheese than chicken not my favorite surprisingly. They come out hot and fresh definitely hits the spot.
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
These pupusas are awesome! For one thing, they're absolutely enormous. The trio was enough to put me in a serious food coma. So much crispy outside and gooey inside to love! I tried the beans and cheese, chicken and cheese, and vegetable mix. All three were excellent, although the chicken and cheese was my favorite. The veggie one had a nice earthy flavor and had lots of different veggies, which I appreciated. The salsas are delicious too. This was a super filling lunch for a pretty good price. I'd definitely go back again!
google avatar

Salma C.

Yelp
Best pupusas I've had. I used to actually not like pupusas at all. However, La Casita changed my mind. You could tell by tasting it was freshly handmade. The masa corn taste was fresh and heavenly. The pupusa had generous filling in it as well. I tried their Vegemixta (beans, loroco bud, and cheese) pupusa with their curtido (Salvadoran coleslaw) and salsa on the side. The curtido didn't have much flavor, but was a nice veggie accompaniment. Their salsa wasn't spicy and more on the blander side for me. The pupusa tasted great. My expectations were low, but La Casita exceeded them. I wish I ordered more than just one. The cheese was tasty along with the beans and loroco. I definitely plan on going their Montgomery County locations in the future to try more pupusas and other Salvadoran dishes.

Yelp
Came here for a quick snack with a friend on a busy Saturday afternoon. La Casita is one of multiple small shops to grab Latino food. I decided to try one of the antojitos which was the yucca con chicharron. It was delicious but the chicharron was a little too cooked for my taste, because I like mine a little on the softer side. Aside from that small touch, I'm very happy with my choice. The curtido on the side was very fresh and I loved the sauce they gave us with the food!

Yelp
So after wandering around a bit after an event, I decided to grab some pupusas from family-owned La Casita Pupuseria. @lacasitapupusas' dishes are handmade every day with local ingredients. It had been over two years since I had freshly made pupusas. I have been trying to suffice by getting some from Whole Foods' frozen section. I ordered their new Puerto Rican-inspired Verano Picadillo Pupusa. It is a heart-shaped pupusa made with corn masa shell stuffed with Puerto Rican-style beef Picadillo & mozzarella. It was love... I missed pupusas, & I missed Puerto Rican food even more. I can't seem to find any good Puerto Rican food in the DMV, so this was a fantastic compromise. So the plan was to grab the trio and eat some of it & take the rest to my sister's place so that she could try them out. Well, this one didn't make it to my sister's. It was too good to share. I also grabbed Pupusa de Pollo (chicken & cheese) & Pupusa de Frijol y Queso (fried red beans and cheese). Gooey- melty cheese - The amount of self-control to not eat all of it. Just for me to get to my sister's, & she already had pupusas before. (bruh, I thought I would be showing her something new). Okay, enough of me rambling. What to do know how you can get yours? La Casita Pupuseria at La Cosechas - 1280 4th Street NE, Washington, DC 20002- See the website for hours. There are also four more locations: Gaithersburg, MD; National Park, DC; Silver Spring, MD; and Germantown, MD.

Yelp
If you are in the Union Market area and you need to grab a drink or a fine bottle of wine and some good Hispanic/Latino food - this is the place! There's a variety of places to grab food and 3 bars inside with a little market to grab international bottles of wine off the wall. As a wine enthusiast- I fell in love with this spot just from the drink choices alone! But the food was also on 1000%

Heart G.

Yelp
I ate here tonight when meeting a friend for dinner at La Cosecha. I ordered the bean and cheese pupusa and the special (had steak in it). I felt sick shortly into eating them and didn't finish -- something felt off. The pupusa was falling apart, which is not how pupusas usually are, so that should've been a clue. I've been up for hours now with a stomach ache and I think I got a case of food poisoning. I am pretty disappointed - in a lot of pain and I didn't get to enjoy my food. I usually love pupusas.

Abbie F.

Yelp
Love this place!! Went here with friends for a smorgasbord of items from different places. Unfortunately some of the other places opened before this one so I only had room for one pupusa and it did not disappoint! If I had more room I would have eaten more of them because they were so good! Loved the style and flavor and so much delicious cheese! Next time I'm starting here so I can try more of them because I love pupusas!!!!
google avatar

Nora M.

Yelp
They have THE BEST papusas in the area. There isn't much more to say than that. THEE BEST. 10/10 always recommend.

Jarelyn P.

Yelp
Amazing service and great people highly recommend if you're visiting DC!!!! I also recommend the cheese and bean pupusas!

Irvin D.

Yelp
Credit is given when credit is due, and this restaurant definitely deserves it. I've gotten the pansito de pollo (chicken sandwich), bean and cheese pupusas, and the nuegados. All three have been amazing and you must try them. But if I can only choose one, I highly recommend the pansito de pollo. It's flavorful, portion is just right, and the sauce is amazing. The ambiance of La Cosecha (the marketplace where the restaurant is located) is really cool and clean. My minor feedback would be to improve the curtido for the Pupusas. But overall, this place is a MUST!
google avatar

Leeann J.

Yelp
The pupusas here are excellent! I ordered through Toast and the pick up was very quick and easy. They have a lot of different kinds of pupusas, and the trio was more than enough for one hungry person. My personal favorite was the loroco and cheese pupusa, and the horchata is AMAZING.
google avatar

Zach T.

Yelp
I wanted to write a review on La Cosecha as a whole, but La Casita alone deserves its own review! When I was around the area, I would frequent La Casita quite often- the pupusas are legit, and my absolute favorite item has to be the carne asada and eggs, under the breakfast menu, which I think is all day. It's a marinated strip steak with eggs, a plain pupusa, avocado, black beans, and salsa. Their horchata is a little on the rice-ier side, but I like it. If Union Market is too crowded, swing by here and you won't be disappointed! If you're going just for the pupusas, I recommend eating here while they are hot, but if you opt for take out, they are easy to quickly re-fry and crisp up in a stove top pan. The yuccas's are a solid side and a nice change up from chips or fries, too. Consistent and delicious.

Rupa N.

Yelp
Stopped by La Cosecha on a beautiful Sunday abd got pupusas for dine in on the patio. They were freshly made and generously filled. I got two bean and cheese pupusas and they were more than filling. I wish they had their own hot sauce to accompany the pupusas. The prices here are higher than other places for pupusas.

Rob H.

Yelp
really good vegan options. Vegan mushrooms and spinach pupusas, vegan enchilladas, and vegan empanadas are all great.
google avatar

Julia N.

Yelp
When they said they make-to-order they weren't lying. The pupusas here are really good! And I appreciate that they have lorocco on their menu which I love in my pupusas.
google avatar

Cara L.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service. I love this place for any meal of the day. They have great vegan cheese pupasas as well.

Navraj K.

Yelp
Unbelievable how nice the workers are on top of the delicious food! Seriously good plant based/vegan options and perfect serving sizes.

Lolu M.

Yelp
As a salvadoreño , this has my stamp of approval. Don't forget to get your horchata to go with your pupusas. Btw, the sauce is not watered down like other spots. For you vegieheads they even have a frijol con loroco you can try! Don't forget to open up the little newspaper box (community art box which will be there till November) in front of storefront so you can find a local salvadoreña artist's prints and goodies. Salud!

Yelp
Excellent pupusas! The best pupusas I've tried in DC so far! They were very kind and they promote latinx artist
