"La Chilaquería, a small Mexican cafe opened by Alfonso Amador and Susana Labrada, offers around two dozen varieties of chilaquiles at 139 W. 28th Street, Manhattan. It has quickly gained popularity among office workers and Mexicans missing home. The cafe serves chilaquiles with an array of meats, salsas, and other toppings. They also offer a torta de chilaquiles and a chilaquiles burrito. The cafe plans to expand its menu to include moles and tlayudas. It has a dozen indoor seats and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily." - Luke Fortney

La chilaqueria is a small place, it's clean and filled with natural light thanks to a large window. The service was friendly and efficient, and despite it being somewhat busy, we received our food promptly. I tried the mole chilaquiles, which had a good flavor and were not bad at all. However, they weren't the best I have had. I think my dish needed more sauce as i prefer my tortilla chips a bit more soaked. The portion was small for the price tag. Overall, the chilaquiles were okay, for someone who is not Mexican, they might be very good. The food was good but easily improvable.

Google
While on the hunt for New yorks best Chilaquiles, I came across La Chilaqueria and looked at all the great reviews and had to try it. I got the Chilaquiles divorsiados with Cecina and a side of beans, and let me tell you! It was so hard to tell which sauce was better! Green? Red?.. Unfortunately, if i had to choose the green won by a hair! The Chilaquiles had the right Crunchy-ness it was tasteful with just the right kick of spice. Loved every single bite! And don't forget to try there there salsa Macha! So delicious

Google
Very unassuming little place . Small menu but what they do they do well, CHILAQUILES! Very tasty. Try the divorciados to taste both red and green house sauce . Authentic and delicious. Would have liked a slightly bigger portion . Would definitely return as the flavours were amazing . Ate our chilaquiles too fast to take a picture:/ . Yes they were that good

Google
I found myself craving chilaquiles this weekend and found exactly what I was hoping for! As other reviewers have noted, the chilaquiles here are very authentic, freshly made, and easily the best I’ve had in NYC. They have two salsa options - green and red - and I generally prefer green but being my first time here, I got half and half (divorciados). Both were excellent, providing a nice kick without being overpowering. I also thought they added just the right amount such that the chips didn’t get soggy. Great spot! I’ll be back!

Google
Looking for a quick cozy and yummy lunch break spot to go to!? Check out La chilaqueria! They have the most amazing chilaquiles in NY which come in either (verde) or (rojos).. they also have burritos & tortas with Chilaquiles inside of them! A MUST TRY! I also had a Cafe de Olla latte which was amazing! Overall my experience was a 10/10! The staff were so friendly and welcoming & service was great!

Google
I ordered the Huevo con Chorizo Burrito, or the Eggs with Chorizo Burrito. I was thoroughly disappointed. For $18, I got a burrito that was basically 90% eggs and 10% chorizo. I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed ordering an item from a small establishment before. I saw the good reviews here, and so I went, but I urge you to not make the same mistake. If you look at the picture, and I’m not kidding here, that right side literally was basically entirely flavorless eggs (and the left too). And for $18!!!!!!!!!! That’s the kicker of it all. And whatever sauce they provided was not good. I would’ve at least loved like ketchup or something for the mouthful of flavorless egg I was getting every bite. It almost feels like a scam how ridiculous and absurd this experience has been.

Google
This is a lovely place with authentic chilaquiles that are super tasty, the owners and staff are super friendly and the vibe is unique as well I definitely come back again. I like businesses like this one where they really care about their clients. I tried their almond sauce chilaquiles and the green ones and they were both really tasty. I have never heard of the almond chilaquiles before but since I read many reviews recommending those I got them and I am glad I did. If you have never tried chilaquiles make sure you ask the recommendations like if you don’t like it spicy so they don’t give you jalapeños, if you want the vegetarian option etcetera they are really friendly and they will help you for sure. I am a Coffee lover and their coffee was also really good.

Google
Excellent authentic chilaquiles, made with absolutely exquisite and fresh ingredients. 100% recommend! Edit: the restaurant changed owners, and they kept the superb quality of food! A must for all chilaquiles lovers in the city.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious, quick, and authentic. The small La Chilaqueria earns highest marks from a lifelong Southern California resident!! Enjoyed the food, and was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas ambiance. When in Chelsea, I'll return.

Gordon Y.

Yelp
This is a cute little cafe that serves some Mexican cuisine along with their beverages. Just as the name states, they specialize in chilaquiles. Two of us shared one order of Divorciados, which comes with both the red and green sauce. The crispy corn tortilla chips were crunchy and didn't get too soggy with the sauces on them. We added an extra egg and some chicharron prensado. Every aspect of that plate was fabulous. We really enjoyed it. The price of the chilaquiles came out to be $22 before drink, tax and tip. We were honestly quite full from sharing the plate and having our individual beverages. This is on my list of restaurants to revisit whenever I'm in the area again.

Yelp
Sadly, I can't speak to the chilaquiles, but I had a solid experience with the coffee... I needed my daily fix and was short on time, so I popped in and ordered a coffee with some steamed oat milk... nothing fancy, but it was exactly what I was looking for. Service was friendly and it was fast! There seemed to be a regular in front of me chit chatting with the barista. I would definitely return to support this local business!

Rob G.

Yelp
Normally with a Hispanic or BBQ place you want it to look kinda crappy. That means the food will be good. That was not the case here. It looked crappy and the food was crappy. The layout was an issue as at many seats it was hard not to not feel in the way of walk ins. This was the worst version of my favorite breakfast food ( chorizo and egg) I've had and my wife didn't finish her breakfast either. A good sauce could have helped a lot but the sauce was the worst part. It was like oil on top of mud. You'd mix it up and pour it on the food to make it better but instead it was worse.:: much worse and you wondered why you put in the effort. Suggestions: have some hot sauces, salsas etc on the side or for selection. Throw the side sauce you have now in the trash. Increase the ratio of chorizo to egg in the dish I had. The employees was very nice and helpful.

Paula G.

Yelp
Amé la comida y el café de olla, el mejor de la vida 100% recomendado. Los chilaquiles estaban increíbles

Heather D.

Yelp
Stopped by for breakfast as it was close to where we were at. We got there at about 10am, and quickly after the restaurant became packed! It's a super small place so patience is needed when ordering and trying to find seating. The Salsa Verde Chilaquiles with avocado was very good!

Toby S.

Yelp
So good! Love this place. Went there for first time this winter. Super cute small place, awesome staff. And everything in menu is super good!

Melany G.

Yelp
Great Chilaquiles I wished they had these in LA!!! You guys should definitely open up shop over there. A plus !!! Definitely recommend and will be coming back for more Chilaquiles best I ever had in USA they are up there !!! Must try!!!!

Asia T.

Yelp
A hidden gem in the flower district. Sit outside with a Cafe de Olla when the weather is nice and enjoy the floral smells. Love the Cafe de Olla with steamed oat milk, chilaquiles and burrito were also very good. Small bathroom downstairs, very friendly staff here. I noticed a lot of customers here visiting from Mexico, which is a good sign.

Yelp
On my last quick trip to DF, I had passed by a stand outside a station on Metro 9 somewhere near Roma Sur serving tortas de chilaquiles, but I had been in a rush to meet a friend and didn't have a chance to try their sandwich. When I heard there was now a chilaquiles specialist in New York, I thought it was high time to fulfill that unfinished breakfast wish. Unfortunately they were out of the torta de chilaquiles on this given Sunday, but the chilaquiles verdes themselves were excellent - not too mushy, but still with ample sauce, and topped with a perfect picture egg. Pairs perfectly with a glass of their cafe de olla.

Andrew L.

Yelp
What an amazing place with great food, amazing staff and great ambiance! Great way to end my short NYC trip!

Luis S.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come here for a while and I finally got the chance. Glad to say I was very pleased. I got the chilaquiles with salsa roja and they were very good and filling. They tasted authentic and high quality. I also got some cafe de olla and it was some of the best I've had in a long time. Everyone was very nice and service was great. The place is a little small and cozy. It's definitely more of a cafe than a restaurant. Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite Mexican spots in the city. If you want some authentic Mexican food come here. I think it's a little pricey and I wish there was more indoor space, but considering I have had a hard time finding very good Mexican food in the city, I think it's worth it. I'll definitely be coming back and recommend stopping by.

Alejandro F.

Yelp
Cold chilaquiles, the food had good flavor but everyone who orders chilaquiles in my party were served cold plates

Anayeli F.

Yelp
Ordered the $20 divorciado chilaquiles and didn't even received any sauce. Added $3 steak and received very little. Service wasn't great, overall a poor experience.

Brian M.

Yelp
I had the chilaquiles divorciados (verde and roja salsa) and my partner had a crispy pork quesadilla. They were both amazing!

Ernie M.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in New York. If you like chilaquiles , you will know a good chilaquil. This place doesn't disappoint the service is good, and just great place all around. Food, service and ambiance.

Rachel O.

Yelp
Seating for groups of two, food is very filling and everything comes out very hot and fresh, a bit expensive but good portions

Matt L.

Yelp
The menu offers several options that I could have anytime if the day. I got the chilaquiles with both the red and green sauce with some chicharon, which was perfectly fatty in the middle and crispy on the edges, cut into big cubes that were the right ratio for the platter. Came here around 11am for a late breakfast & seating was easy to find. They also have a coffee and espresso menu, if that's what you need to get your day started.

Kris B.

Yelp
Highly recommend this wonderful cafe. Delicious fresh food prepared and served by a charming couple. I enjoyed the signature dish with flavorful coffee served piping hot. Clean. Friendly. Delicious.

Par H.

Yelp
Delicious food for breakfast. We all had Chilaquiles. Did carry out as our hotel was nearby and everything was packaged perfectly even including extra sauces. Super friendly staff and very good Mexican coffee and cappuccinos.

Hannah E.

Yelp
I wasn't that blown away by the chilaquiles divorciados here - the proportions were off. If there were beans present, I didn't notice them. When I brought up my bowl to the counter to ask, he told me they were probably already in there, but gave me another cup just in case. Then, when I added them, they were strangely tasteless and gluey and actually made it worse. There was also almost no avocado or radish. The sauces were actually great, both red and green, and even though the dish was 90% chips and salsas, I enthusiasically demolished about a 1/3 of it pretty quickly. But once it cooled down even a little bit, it was just a soggy, totally uncrunchy mass of chips and became unappetizing.

Daniel A.

Yelp
I am from Mexico city and have tried and cooked many a versions of chilaquiles. This- this is something else. The unique, delicious flavors are no simple task to master or even to identify. The salsas area almost like a mole but not as heavy, and with the right amount of spice. I never thought I found such a place in NYC, me being from California and all. But what amazed me the most was the rice pudding, "arroz con leche" and the conchas. Those come out of the blue like a hard, striking left fist to the jaw with their perfect sweetness, consistency, and flavor. My hats are off to this place. Did I mention their "cafe de olla" late? Aaaand I'm off to planning my next visit to NYC . . .

Cheryl S.

Yelp
Way over priced!!! Mostly tortilla chips with one egg, avocado and salsa = $20! Extra for meat.

Georgina P E.

Yelp
Back in August I stumbled across this gem in Chelsea and I am still thinking about these chilaquiles. Chilaquiles are one of my fave dishes because they are so versatile and can have them at any time of the day. I ordered the "chilaquiles almendrados (almonds) as that is what they recommended. I didn't know what to expect and wow, I was so impressed. Definitely have that nutty taste and texture but they were also spicy and had a kick to them. Topped with a sunny side egg and queso fresco. Delicious For drinks, I ordered a "latte de olla" and it was very tasty. For those who don't know, cafe de olla (black coffee made with cinnamon and piloncillo aka raw dark sugar) is very popular in Mexico and it's some of the best coffee imo. Was so glad to see this on the menu Service was great! It was on a random weekday at 2pm and super slow. Ambiance was nice; they had amazing music (Spanish rock). If you love chilaquiles and want true authentic Mexican chilaquiles and happen to be in the Chelsea area, I highly recommend you check this place out!!! It will not disappoint. Follow @nycdines.xo on IG for more! :)

Yelp
A beautiful addition to the flower district aka Chelsea. Pink chairs & a novel Mexican breakfast in NYC with killer coffee. The interior is so pretty, tranquil & lined with flowers. Ate: Chilaquiles with eggs $18 You pick one of three salsas. The almond is unexpected & incredible!!! Also, I ordered egg whites. They don't have decaf so I went light on the cafe, but there's nothing like this Mexican standard for breakfast. Sabroso & scrumptious and made to order.

Ellen C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were super excited to try this spot after seeing it had 4.9 stars on Google. We decided to stop by for lunch. First off, only come for the chilaquiles if you LOVE nachos. Chilaquiles are essentially fried tortillas with toppings. That being said, the dish was really good, it was just mostly tortilla chips haha. There wasn't much protein and there was one slice of avocado on top. As someone who doesn't LOVE just eating tortilla chips doused in salsa, I would come again to try their torta or burrito. The staff were super friendly and the place was cute.

Jimmy M.

Yelp
Nice little 6 table restaurant, served counter style. I'm new to Chilaquiles, and they are tough to make. The approach of using pre-crisped tortilla chips I wasn't aware was a thing, but I have to say it works! It has a very family feeling, alt the decor is a little lot short and modern. I tried both the Verde and Almendras adding pork and they were fantastic! The meat was moist and tender, full of flavor. The two salsas were a good contrast from each other, along I preferred the Verde. I think with bed, I would order the almendra salsa. Make sure to get a Mexican Coke with your meal - such a good match. The wait wasn't long and the staff were friendly and informative. Portions aren't huge, but that's a good thing, because if they were for a lunch portion, you'd be passed out in minutes. If you're nearby definitely recommend stopping in.

Aaron A.

Yelp
The burrito de chilaquiles was phenomenal. It was very rich and flavorful as was the chilaquiles divorciados according to my partner. This place had been on my radar and I finally decided to try it! I was not disappointed. My cafe de olla is one of the best if not the best cafe de olla I've ever had. (So good I had to take a second to go)! The service was great and came out quickly even though it picked up at noon. The ambiance is very cozy and they play Mexican music that makes you feel at home. They have gained a repeat customer!

Wil P.

Yelp
Food was delicious and service was great. I got the chilaquiles verdes and they was really good.

Annalissa C.

Yelp
Wow. This place was good. The service was great as the people were really nice and the food came pretty quickly considering it's made fresh. The food was full of flavor and definitely satisfied my breakfast burrito craving. I had the Huevo con Chorizo and requested removal of the beans and avocado. The place itself is small, but there's enough seating if you don't come when it's packed. They also have a few seats outside for when the weather is nice. The prices are a little high for what it is, but I would still come back.

E B.

Yelp
This place was pretty good. i got the mole chilaqueria with beef. I didn't love the beef, but the mole and chips were good. My daughter got the vegetarian burrito and wasn't impressed. We both like a lot of flavor and this burrito didn't have it. My husband loved the Mexican orange soda.

Raul R.

Yelp
Best breakfast in New York. Highly recommend the chilaquiles divorciados. Half green/half red. Ambiance was perfect, music not too loud, small chic place.

Lil Y.

Yelp
Excellent service and coffee. Ambience and music is the perfect Mexican modern coffee shop aesthetic. Excelente servicio y café. El ambiente y la música son la estética perfecta de una cafetería moderna mexicana.

Trey N.

Yelp
Chilaqueria burrito was excellent! Service was incredible. The guy who took our order (I presume was the owner) walked us through the menu as it was our first time. As we were enjoying our meal, he brought out a complimentary rice pudding. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.

Angie T.

Yelp
Great place for a casual breakfast/lunch/brunch. It's small but nicely decorated and with a few tables indoors and out front. We were greeted by the owner, who was very welcoming and helpful. We had the torta with chorizo and the chilaquiles with cecina. They were both delicious, but my favorite was the torta, super flavorful and an interesting mix of textures. The latte 'cafe de olla' was also very tasty - creamy, not too sweet, and flavored with spices. I would definitely recommend checking it out!

Kathie G.

Yelp
Excellent place and service. Nos encanto!! Muy lindas las personas que atienden y mexican style.

Kimberly B.

Yelp
We were so fortunate to stay across from this place . It's the cutest little spot with amazing food. I had to try mostly all the things on the menu . When you think about chilaquiles you think basic , but the menu is beyond ! I had to go back twice . I had the green chilaquiles, next day I had a TORTA and BURRITO , and the cafe de olla with cashew milk is to DIE for The service we received was so amazing and we will definitely be back again. They made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience. Hope they open one in San Diego

Yoni Z.

Yelp
The owner is super friendly and won me over. I felt like the chilaquiles were pretty similar to what I've tried in Mexico. Are they pricey, sure but they pay attention to small details and it's an expensive location so it is what it is. My only quibble is that the cecina could have been cut into thinner medallion like slices instead of thicker strips for a nicer texture. This is just my preference in how I've had it before where it is cut thinner for more surface area and a more pleasant chew. I wish I opted for chorizo or avocado instead. That aside it's all about the sauce which was absolutely spot on. I want to go back to try the cafe de olla, a concha, and potentially a Torta or burrito. This is just hard to do solo considering the obscene amount of calories involved in doing that all in one sitting.

Heather T.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing food. We got the avocado sandwich. I think it's called the Chilaquiles Sandwich. We also got two chai tea lattes and everything was amazing. Sorry for the picture. It was so good we ate it first. lol

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Another straightforward place that had a simple menu. I came here for the chilaquiles burrito. It was $20 which is expensive but that is what hype does to a burrito. Never seen chilaquiles in a sandwich form. It has good texture and is one of the more unique sandwiches you will eat but I found the heat overpowering. The sauce was a little grainy too. I would also eat it in the place since it doesn't travel well. I ate it in the store and it was not my thing but it is unique. Would I come back? Maybe but will try other items.

Lucy N.

Yelp
At first I was pretty skeptical - $20 for chilaquiles?? But I'm so glad I let my love for chilaquiles guide me. This place is delicious! The portions are bigger than they appear in pictures. We got free horchata samples and it was not too sweet - yum! I got the chilaquiles divorciados (both salsas) w/ chorizo. Every chip was perfectly covered in sauce. So good! Would come back to try the torta and the burrito!

Fritz L.

Yelp
Chilaquiles Divorciados, plate of chips, 1/8 slice of almost ripe avocado, maybe 2 oz of teeny pork cubes and lots of red & green salsa. Somewhat tasty. Only $18. Giant cup of latte Mexicano filled 7/8 with ice. $6. Whatever

Kelly B.

Yelp
I can't emphasize enough just how enchanting this hidden gem truly is! La Chilaqueria not only serves the most exquisite coffee and authentic, tasteful chilaquiles options in town but also provides exceptional service. They go the extra mile to tailor our orders to perfection and offer superb recommendations for their entire menu. The owners are remarkably friendly and helpful, making it no surprise that this place is rapidly becoming a popular place! Hands down my new favorite spot when visiting the city!

Edward M.

Yelp
Really amazing food! Great service. Café de olla is it. I would definitely come back when I'm in town!

Enrique V.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it's not the case. 19 dollars for tortillas wrapped in another tortilla!? Price seems a bit much. I ordered the chilaquiles burrito and honestly it was extremely disappointing. Lacked meat and ingredients inside. You guys need to charge less for these burritos maybe you'll get more peeps coming in add eggs to the chilaquiles burrito too.

Suzie A.

Yelp
The place is absolutely fabulous! The chilaquiles where SO good (Mexican girl talking here). I got the chilaquiles divorciados with eggs and a Mexican latte. Great portions, sauces made from scratch and delicious. Latte was perfect. Not too sweet and the service was amazing. Definitely coming back when I'm in town. For sure coming back when I'm in town.

Vanessa G.

Yelp
I love chilaquiles ! I have to say im a big fan of the coffee de la olla with latte you have to try it

Vivian L.

Yelp
Definitely my new favorite mexican place that I stumbled upon when researching on yelp for top rated mexican food near my office. I ordered the chorizo burrito and it was well-portioned for the price, hot and fresh as it was made to order, and the inside of the restaurant was clean and I loved the design as it gave brunch vibes. The cashier guy was friendly and answered any questions I had. I will order the chilaquería next time!

Luis M.

Yelp
A little paradise of modern Mexico. Small place, great taste, and make you feel at home
