San Diego’s Best Affordable Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"For antojitos Mexicanos that won’t break the bank, try the Grant Square restaurant’s combination plates served with rice, beans, and, for breakfast plates, tortillas. Choose from chilaquiles, huevos a la Mexicana or scrambled eggs with tomato, onion, and cilantro, as well as tacos dorados, stacked sopes, and enchiladas. The guisados, served with rice, beans, and handmade corn tortillas, are $13 and include options like chicken with mole and stewed pork chop with salsa verde and nopales." - Roxana Becerril

Came here to try out their chilaquiles because the pictures look so damn good and was sorely disappointed. - Service Service started out really well. It seemed like there was only one guy running the whole place; he was taking orders, cleaning the tables, cooking, taking payment and he was managing it well since there wasn't a lot of people. The menu had printed items but the prices were handwritten on the headings. I saw chilaquiles and saw that it was reasonably priced and proceeded to order. The guy took my order and when I was about to pay, he said pay later, so I took a seat and waited for my food. Later another person came in and helped out (took orders and payments). My food arrived but the eggs were not what I ordered, so I took the plate back and told them. And the new person said "Oh ok. We won't charge you since it's our fault.". Duh? Why should I be paying for your fault? But I let the comment slide. This will come back to bite me later. - Taste Kinda bland and what's worse was the chips were so soggy that they're like wet paper. The salsa barely had any flavor but later, when the correct eggs arrived, they helped give the dish some taste. - Price/payment They charge credit card fee, but that's not the issue. The issue was they over-charge me. Instead of charging me what was listed on the menu, they charged me $7 more and so I asked why it was the case. The new person said it was the eggs, and I said $7 for eggs? And she got annoyed and gave me a whole long list of explanations that did not make sense as I just stood in silence to hear her explanations. I did not even say anything to rebut her, but she became exasperated and said "Fine fine." and charged me $5 more than listed instead of $7. Ok.... thanks? I just didn't have the strength to argue with her given that the weak ass chilaquiles still left me starving. I just wanted to get out of there and not come back to this place.

**Five-Star Review for a Local Mexican Restaurant** Wow, the food here was amazing! When we first walked in, we had no idea what we were getting into, but we hit the jackpot. We ended up having traditional-style food for breakfast - truly a breakfast for champions! The ambiance is incredibly charming, reminiscent of a cozy, old-school Mexican spot, filled with beautiful plants that give it a homely feel like visiting my aunt's house. The service was exceptional; the guy helping us let us sample all the different sauces, which was a fantastic touch. As a huge foodie who eats everywhere in San Diego, I can confidently say this was one of the best dining experiences I've had. This place is a hidden gem you might only discover through Google or Yelp, but it's definitely worth seeking out. I'll definitely be bringing my grandma and daughter here. It's just so cute and welcoming. 10 out of 10!

The food was not great. For the dishes we got and not to enjoy it is no good. And to pay $83 for 4 plates 😳 and when we were asked how’s everything, my husband said nicely to take the plate away as to he was done and not going to finished it which he only took 2 bites because he did not liked it and it had a weird taste to it She got upset and just left not even acknowledging what was said. My daughter also didnt even finished her food which I was surprised. Yeah we tried and unfortunately won’t be going back.

Google
Amazing food! Just like abuelitas cooking 😋😋 apart from the amazing food the customer service here is top notch! They were constantly checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. They made us feel like home! Gracias por nuestro lindo almuerzo 😋 muy rico todo! Chile relleno with chilito de Puerco for me which was delicious! My fiancé had the Hígado Encebollado, sis-in-law had the menudo, father in law had the Bistec encebollado, and mother in law had the fish plate! We all pick at each others food when we go out to eat 😂 especially when the food is really good! We all loved the food! Definitivamente comida casera al 100% y más! 😋

The atmosphere is so nostalgic, gives you a vibe of going to Tijuana on a Saturday or Sunday as a kid. The staff is so attentive and welcoming. We had told them it was our first time and did not know if we ordered or sat down first. The lady in the register informed us of how things run there. She told us about the dishes and what she recommended. The pozole was so flavorful, the meat so tender, the seating was so cute outside we had a view of Market st. The tortillas are fresh and hand made. The regular mulita was huge, I chose pollo asado. The Aguas frescas were on point, not too watered down or overwhelmingly sweet. We were both so glad we decided to try this place out. Absolutely enjoyed it.

Was in town and was excited to grab a bite from a favorite taco shop, to only be disappointed. New owner took over and the service and food was very disappointing. I asked to use the restroom after food was ordered, she tell me step by step on how to use the restroom, bring me the key back, lock door, shut door and bring me the key back but in a very idk weird way. Next she tell my husband to shut the beverage fridge door cause it cost to much money, which I thought was wild! He’s picking out 3 drinks, what do you expect him to grab it while it’s shut! Food was super salty! Only good thing was the tortilla, I wasn’t given any salsa and wasn’t about because I’d probably be charged too.

The worker took 30 minutes to give each one of us our food, also food was just laying there frozen. 1 taco for $6 is crazy! Ended up spending 48 dollars on only tacos.

Google
My hangover was cured, gracias Cocina de Rosita! They have many options for whatever you are in the mood for. Mexican cuisine that tastes like your aunties made it. It *MAY* be too salty or for some folks but a lot of people like it that way. The older gentleman working here gave me extra of those delicious hand dressed tortillas and made me feel very welcomed even though I was looking ROUGH. I'll be back to try the goat birria!

Yelp
This is one of these places only the locals know about. It is way too far off the tourist areas. And the food and service are excellent. My go to is the pozole. It comes with all the fixings -- shredded cabbage, diced onion, cilantro, sliced radishes, fresh (made in-house) tortillas. Yes, the pozole has bones -- authentic pozole broth is made by slow simmering pork bones. Did I mention the tortillas? If your taco seems a bit thicker and more flavorful than what you get at your local chain taco shops, it is because every part of that taco, including the tortilla, was prepared in the restaurant. Parking can sometimes get a little tight in the tiny lot, but there is some street parking nearby.

Yelp
Unsatisfied with the cost and what they served me. Prices are not in the menu so i order a carne asada burrito no pico and they gave me the smallest taco ever with a smear of guac and lil lettuce. $19. Ill stick to my local shop where it costs me $15 with extra guac.

Yelp
Looks like they changed owners which is sooo sad. This was our favorite authentic Mexican food place but without Mr. Rosita (I never asked his name I think it was Mario) it's definitely not the same. The portions and flavors are gone. The last time we attempted to dine in, they were putting up boards so you couldn't see into the kitchen. We ended up just leaving. I'll be trying it out every so often to see if it changes but not holding my breath.

Yelp
Stopped here, January 1, 2025 on the way home from San Diego. Authentic delicious Mexican food. The Menudo and tacos were just what the doctor ordered. The service was fast and friendly. It's a must try if you're in the area, this place is a hidden gem.
google avatar

Ted G.

Yelp
Very expensive mediocre food. Watery guacamole, carne asada was dry and probably reheated. Ridiculously high priced for the quality of the food I will not return.

Yelp
So we went here, as my fiancée is currently on a quest to find the best menudo in the greater San Diego area, and La Cocina de Rosita shot to the front of the pack here. It's a cozy little spot in Grant Hill, and it's just this side of cramped. Still, lots of options and the proprietor is accommodating. The broth is rich and flavorful, and it's got a generous portion of tripas in there. I had the Chilaquiles en Mole, and they were delightful. The Mole was a little more picante than sweet, but it's a variation which didn't step outside of my preference or expectation. What really stands out about this dish is the chips arrive crunchy. Since I'm writing while eating, the chips have softened a bit, and it's still a delight, with some crispy bits. As to my baseline for any Mexican restaurant (frijoles), this little restaurant doesn't disappoint. The beans are creamy, well-seasoned, and could be a meal with just a dish of them and a tortilla or two. In fact, my lady was dipping into my mole and frijoles in between mouthfuls of menudo. If you're looking for the real deal in quality Mexican food, then drive east of the Gaslamp and check out this epic hole in the wall.

Yelp
Be sure to get here early first, to get a parking spot and second, to be able to get a table. This place has all sorts of offerings and range in price from $2-$20 but let me assure you, each and every item not only looks good but tastes good too! The dining area is decorated nicely with authentic Mexican items which includes the Virgin Mary Painting. Be prepared to pay cash otherwise be hit with a credit card fee... Let this be a reminder to you that cash is king! I ordered and in less than five minutes my food was ready. I enjoyed their adobada tacos with all the fixings. Their rolled tacos are yummy too... Just wish they gave me more than one napkin since I had four greasy items lol. I'll be back for sure when in the area.

Yelp
Nasty food idk how this place allost has 5 stars and expensive microwaveed food do not eat there

Vianey B.

Yelp
The best place to eat authentic mexican food. The food tastes like when I was back at home in my town! So many childhood memories! The folks in here give an amazing service and accommodate your needs! The feel of the ambiance is home welcoming. Overall they deserve all the stars in the world!

Yelp
I had a delicious chile relleno plate for breakfast on Thursday. The sauce surprised me as it looked pretty basic, but the flavor was fantastic. Home made corn tortillas were delicious as was the cafe de olla. That coffee was SO good I drank it without creamer--a first for me. It is clearly a hole in the wall in a rough part of town, but the food was so good, I want to return and try something else, and some more of that coffee!

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food! Delicious options to choose from. I had the pozole. Came in on a Sunday, It was not too busy. They take your order at the counter and serve you at your table. The pozole came with all the fixings and a salsa for added spice. The tortillas are freshly made and they give as many as you can eat. Friendly service and attentive. We are definitely coming back. Also, try the Cafe de Olla!

Jvs D.

Yelp
Just saw below that the owners may have changed ? If so, NO WONDER! The portions, taste and price have drastically changed for the WORSE. Our food was cold, super salty, barely any food/meat and the price OMG it's about 20$ a plate now and that's what brings me here I kept calculating the prices, their website shows 12.99 but Yelp shows 16.99 so I'm not sure what's accurate but wow! This use to be our go to authentic Mexican place but not anymore and it's makes me so sad because it was so good......super disappointed and never returning BEWARE!

Modo C.

Yelp
I'm so very sad it's not the same very underwhelming. This spot used to be an absolute find from what I hear new owners I'm truly sad

Alissa R.

Yelp
The best food we've had in San Diego! Homemade tortillas, and the rice was so delicious, we grabbed another side. Fish was crispy yet so tender, the bone slipped right out If we hadn't been snacking throughout the day, I would have gotten my own fish lol.
google avatar

Henry S.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Fantastic service. Authentic Mexican food. You better be hungry!! Price was reasonable. Memorable!
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
I was visiting a friend and we were having trouble getting our day started/making a plan. Probably because we were hungry. Solution: breakfast burrito delivery from La Cocina de Rosaita! They opened early and ordering here was super easy. We got one breakfast burrito with bacon and one with chorizo and we were both SO HAPPY with our delicious burritos. Delivery was super fast (to South Park) and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made :-) Highly recommend you try it too! Ps only for special occasions; breakfast burritos ordered through here are $15, plus all the fees and taxes, this was almost $50 i think with tip!

Yelp
Really really wanted to like this place based off of the impression that it was authentic and it really was! It just was the imbalance in consistency of flavors and what I ordered that makes my rating a 3. Should I have tried something more authentic? Yes. I ordered a barbacoa taco and 5 piece rolled tacos. Every bite of the barbacoa was so overly salted and was marinating for too long. I find it hard to mess up rolled tacos but they were bland and the meat could have used some marinade. I would have to get something else to try as I do feel as if this place is truly authentic as I saw the ladies making tortillas on the spot and the space looks like a dining room in a house. I wouldn't give up on them yet!
google avatar

Yelp
If your ever in San Diego you need to stop by and try their delicious cafe de olla it's is very delicious. The pozole and menudo were very tasty and fresh. Tortillas handmade. Staff were very welcoming and make you feel very comfortable and the environment is very cozy.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
They have excellent menudo but their hand made corn tortillas... are AMAZING!! We stop by just to buy those sometimes!

Werner R.

Yelp

Yelp
Just went back after a few weeks of life, you know how that could put a wrench in your plans, but the staff there haven't missed a beat Rosalba with on time service beautiful and down to earth and el Señor Vicente and his helper make this place a destination for homemade Mexican food like no where else.
google avatar

Blanca Y.

Yelp
If you're looking for a good authentic Mexican spot , you have to try this place . Not far from downtown and food is cooked fresh and the best part is the homemade tortillas ..
google avatar

Kasey R.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible! We had them cater for our son's graduation and everything was delicious and thoughtfully prepared!
google avatar

Alice K.

Yelp
Got adventurous in San Diego, stopped at a local owned Mexican restaurant. The food is fantastic!! Like your eating in someone's home. Thick Handmade tortillas, everything was very authentic. Very homey atmosphere, they speak both Spanish and English super friendly. Smells fantastic when you walk in. Seating inside and some outdoor. Must try you won't be disappointed.

Benjamin P.

Yelp
If ur looking for a nice peaceful place to have a Mexican homemade meal this is it, food was amazing and the service was great

Natalia M.

Yelp

google avatar

Tif M.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance, traditional and felt like home. The gentleman was really welcoming and took our order while throwing the food on the stove. Food was good. I will give it another shot.

Yelp
I'm trying this place for first time if you're looking for authentic Mexican that like Mexico City style u found it me and my mom try the 5 rolled tacos and The Chicharron plate Chicharron plate was a very interesting and had a really good taste. I'll have to say is I liked it a lot but use less salt with overall the tortillas and are Bomb cause they made freshly and The roll tacos were bomb they had guacamole and sour cream with lettuce and white cheese I can say the food it was very unique. I definitely will be back to try everything else I heard before Covid-19 The prices were cheaper but now price gone up

Attaley H.

Yelp
This is the most authentic Mexican food. It felt like I was seated in my grandmothers kitchen. The food was amazing, we came for Sunday brunch and ordered the mole, pozole, carne asada fries and the combinación. Everything was great! This is a must stop when in San Diego. The staff was so friendly. Can't say enough good things about this place. It was a meal served with love.

Sungbin H.

Yelp
Amazing pozole. Amazing horchata. Love the roasted peppers. Very friendly/family vibes from employees. Nice chill little spot i like to visit.

Jonathan J.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for years and love how the old man would cook with his wife. Reminds me of my childhood home cooked meals. One of San Diego's hidden gems. Must have.
google avatar

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
They Over charge!!! And the receipt doesn't say what they charge you just the total. "Fresh orange" hahah you mean water with a splash of orange.

Emz P.

Yelp
On a small strip mall, parking is limited. Order at the counter but pay at the end. The menu is in Spanish only! Very friendly. There are a few tables on the balcony. The food was fresh and delicious. The soft taco shells were thicker than usual and seemed they were made in the restaurant. If I am in the neighborhood I will eat there again.

Viviana F.

Yelp
To start off they forgot I even ordered and I had to pay TWICE, and also they were drinking on the job, also the cashier was handing out free beers to a customer he knew and ALSO the cashier was talking to girls sitting at a table and checking them out and also the food was a bit raw.
google avatar

Chase E.

Yelp
This place is incredibly good. I was able to sample several of the dishes and all of them were delicious. The service was excellent and sitting outside was delightful. I don't live in San Diego, but I would for sure visit the restaurant again! 5 stars all the way!!!
google avatar

Ryan D.

Yelp
Oh man, I am in love with this place after eating here for the first time!! Incredibly tasty entrees and friendly people run the place - very welcoming. I think this is my new favorite Mexican restaurant! Outstanding home made tortillas too.

Wendy C.

Yelp
SOOOO DELICIOUS! I was craving a mojarra and this place delivered. Best mojarra I've had in a long time. Muy delicioso! Tenia muchas ganas de una mojarra frita y este lugar me sirvió la mojarra más sabrosa que eh probado en mucho tiempo.

K N.

Yelp
Food was really delicious and they had HUGE quesadillas!! service was definitely a 100/10 Nice ambiance!!

Peter M.

Yelp
Incredible. People were super nice and food was DELICIOUS. Can't wait to go back. Was a little overwhelmed with options but everything looked great
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Had high hope for this place due to high yelp reviews. However I really don't get why the reviews are high; this place does not serve good food. I'm giving it 2 stars, and still being generous. Not recommended at all.

Jeffrey N.

Yelp
It's like eating in a Latina Grandma's kitchen. The tortillas are fresh pressed, super thick and some of the best I've ever had.

Isaac J.

Yelp
The lady running this place has the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Walked in and she was on the phone with her AirPods on talking loudly while taking orders. Couldn't remember our order three or four times. Took forever because she was on the phone the whole time. Overcharged us for everything. Whatever, we took the food and left. My girlfriend accidentally left her jamaica on the roof of the car so we turned around to get another one. When she went in and explained what happened the lady said "why would I give you another one that's not my fault." Which is true even though it's terrible customer service. However she had overcharged us like I said, so when my girlfriend mentioned that the lady replied that the prices on the menu are old prices. Which is illegal and probably a lie to be honest. And yes she was talking on the phone the whole time. To top it off the food was seriously terrible. Not just saying that. She charged us $11.99 for a bean and cheese burrito that was half the size of bennys that you can get for half the price. And bennys is all around better. Save your time and money and go to bennys. This place sucks and so does the lady running it

Joseph G.

Yelp
Carne asada fries were $15 and came in small portions. Fries came under cooked and meat had a weird gravy/brothy taste. Saw the reviews and got excited just to be disappointed with one bite in. Regretted not going to Humberto's.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
The tortillas here alone are incredible. The food was freshly made and incredibly delicious. Highly recommend the pollo asado, carne asada, mulitas... honestly anything with a tortilla here. Incredibly kind folks and delicious food.
google avatar

Ralph M.

Yelp
I went to buy a burrito they charged my card $74 dollars in the past they did the same thing, thank god I always check my credit card after purchasing anything, I'm not sure if they have financial problems?
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
They've got my vote and mine is the only one that counts. Lol. No really, only my first visit but whatever I'm down like Julie Brown. Friendly, clean, cute setup & they have posole! YOMMM.

Christian M.

Yelp
The food is delicious well recommend. Ate Chive bowl was very good. But next to me a person ordered hígado en cebollado that plate looked delicious. First time here and for sure I will be back.
google avatar

Trent L.

Yelp
They completely messed up my order and overcharged me! I ordered a chorizo breakfast burrito, two al pastor tacos, a barbacoa taco, and a large horchata. I received the burrito, two pastor tacos, and a jamaica agua fresca instead. The burrito was a huge disappointment, consisted mostly of undercooked potatoes. The two pastor tacos were good. Also, it seems there is a significant up charge if you order online.
