Where to Eat Mexican Food in the South Bay | Eater San Diego

"You can find pan dulce (a wide-ranging category of Mexican sweet breads) at most of the local grocery stores, but some of it is mass produced. Conversely, the quality of sweet bread that comes from La Concha Bakery is pretty tough to beat. All its items are made daily, and the sweet smell of sugar and butter lingers in the air. You can’t go wrong with a concha, a sweet bread roll that has a crunchy sugar topping. The name “concha” comes from the bread’s round shape, marked by broken stripes on top to resemble the swirl of a conch shell." - Kristin Díaz de Sandi

**A Hidden Gem in Chula Vista – La Concha Bakery** La Concha Bakery on East Street in downtown Chula Vista is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves baked goods. I’ve never come across another bakery quite like this one—it's truly unique in both its selection and experience. From the moment you step inside, you’ll notice a charming setup that makes choosing your treats a fun and interactive experience. At the entrance, there's a table filled with tongs and trays—grab one, then take your time browsing the impressive selection of baked goods. Their offerings lean heavily toward traditional Mexican pastries, but they also have familiar American favorites like donuts. What really makes this place stand out, though, are the unique and hard-to-find items that you won’t see at just any bakery. The prices are extremely reasonable, with most items costing no more than a few dollars. At the front, there’s also a fridge stocked with larger cakes, cheesecakes, and individually sized desserts. If you’re in the mood for something savory, don’t miss their empanada-style baked goods—flaky, buttery, and filled with delicious options like chicken, beef, and jalapeño cream cheese. They do offer coffee, though I found it to be just okay. But honestly, the baked goods are the real stars here. The bakery is clean, bright, and welcoming, with a vibrant mural on the side of the building adding to its charm. The counter staff is incredibly friendly, efficiently boxing up your selections when you’re ready to check out. One thing to note: parking can be tricky. There are a few spots right in front, but since the bakery is right off a busy street, pulling in and out can be a challenge—so be cautious. If it’s peak hours, you might need to find parking in the nearby residential area. Also, while the bakery is wheelchair accessible, it is not pet-friendly. All in all, La Concha Bakery is an absolute gem. If you're anywhere near downtown Chula Vista, this spot is *not* to be missed. Whether you're craving something sweet or savory, you’ll leave with a box full of delicious, one-of-a-kind treats.

This magical bakery bring me back memories of my grandfather and I waking up at the dawn to go buy bread for breakfast. My wife and I decided on La Concha because of their high quality and friendly family service. The Lemon Wedding cake they created for us was delicious and light. It topped off our wedding day and guest enjoyesd every slice. Thank you Claudia for your staff's attention to detail and talent. Look forward to more visits soon.

Google
I was around the area on a Monday morning, and came across this bakery. A sweet bread and a coffee sounded good, I was impressed upon arrival everything looked delicious well organized, and a welcoming table with a tray, tongs self serve service. What I liked the most is a name and price is listed for you so you know what you are purchasing, makes it interesting to know the sweet bread you like. Cakes are beautiful and creative, I’ve never seen a bouquet of flowers made by cupcakes and its impressive. Apart from the sweet bread purchase I also got an empanada cream cheese jalapeño, its kept warm in a oven. This is a place I would come back to try more from their menu, possibly order a cake in the future for a special occasion.

I have mixed feelings about this review, but overall, this place is great. I just wasn't so trill when we cut into my husband's cake and found very little cake and lots of filling.

Yelp

Yelp
This has been our favorite bakery for over years! Truly a Chula Vista gem. The bread is always so warm. There's been times where I do last minute mini catering and they always accommodate. The staff is always so kind. My son had career day at school today and he wants to be a baker because he loves this place. Staff from the back of house came out and were so kind to him. Try their empanadas! So delicious.

Yelp
I pre-ordered a large concha for Saturday at 9:00 , 4 days before but when my sister arrived to get the concha they said they didn't have an order and that we ordered at the wrong spot. After I told my sister absolutely not we ordered there the lady said it was still in the oven and not finished yet. We told her that we had pre-ordered it days before and she responded "yes but things take time, they take time ok?" which is super confusing why order days in advance if when we need it , its not available. if things take time then they need to prepare in advance. For the drive back they did offer my nephew a pan dulce and a drink and we appreciate it but we were late to our reservations and lost our table having to come back and get the bread 30 minutes later. The concha was good but next time I would do pick up for day before so plans aren't ruined.

Yelp
Delicious fresh Mexican sweet and savory bakery. Our family faves are the vanilla muffin (mantecada), Palmier (oreja), "elote" which is a delicious and scrumptious bread covered in sugar, there's one with a yellow center that has the texture of a concha top, bolillo you can never go wrong with it! Crispy outer crust and soft buttery inside, perfect for your "tortas" or simply with some butter spread inside. They also have a giant bolillo! Their champurrado is delicious and seasonal. On this visit we ordered a small rosca de Reyes aka Kings cake for the Epiphany on January 6th, the texture, flavor and size was pure perfection. Pricing was on point for straight from the bakery and they went the extra mile of packaging it securely so I could place in my luggage and fly back home. I couldn't believe it was intact when we opened it at home. Evelyn was friendly and patient in explaining the options for our rosca, with filling or without.

Yelp
This is a great Mexican bakery, which I discovered simply by driving down E Street. I picked up a couple of Mexican Croissants, also known as cuernitos, and a "nuez" pan dulce. The butter croissants were $1.60 each, and so was the nuez. Both breads were terrific. I had both croissants at room temperature, and their texture and flavors were very good. The nuez I heated in my convection oven, and it was outstanding. It tasted great. I really liked the variety of Mexican sweet breads this bakery offers. They also offer hot savory empanadas. The place was very clean when I visited, and the ladies at the counter were super sweet. I will be back for sure!

Yelp
I was excited to try the Mexican freshly made sweet bread from La Concha Bakery located on E Street in Chula Vista as I had passed this location many times. As soon as you walk in the bakery, you can smell the delicious bread. My sister once brought me a 3 leches cake that was delicious. I'd give it 5 stars because it was very delicious and would go back again. I'm giving this 4 stars only because as a blogger, you take many photos and videos to help businesses with free advertisement. This young lady with dark hair came out with an entire platter of freshly made sweet bread that looked so delicious. I started recording the bread and she immediately told me to stop recording and that she didn't give me permission to record her which I wasn't. So I decided to stop recording at that point and I'm here because I wanted to give kuddos to the baker for the bread we tried. It's always the rude employees with that type of attitude that can hurt a good business. We live in a world where everything is being blogged. I suggest this young rude lady keep up with the times and wear a mask to cover her face if worried about being recorded in the future. The male employee at register was very polite.

Yelp
La Concha is a fantastic bakery in Chula Vista! They have a wide variety of Mexican sweet breads, including the classic conchas, alongside assorted cookies and cakes. We especially like their chocolate mousse cake and flan. The staff is incredibly friendly and patient with kids, making it a great place to grab a sweet treat for the whole family.

Yelp
Was looking for a place that had a ready carrot cake and found this bakery! I picked up a carrot cake for my dad and he loved it. I thought the cake was good too, but I usually prefer a cream cheese frosting for carrot cake. I also picked up a vanilla concha and an orejas de elephante. Both are good but my fave was the orejas de elephante! Definitely coming back for more sweets in the future!

Yelp
First time placing an order for a cake and cupcakes. I was extremely satisfied with how well they came up. Both were made exactly as ordered.

Yelp
I have been here a few times when I'd crave baked goods and/or conchas. They make their breads and pastries pretty fresh and they have a wide selection of goodies. I stopped by their newly remodeled bakery a few weeks ago. I came in, grabbed a tray and tongs and started piling my tray with goodies. They had different flavors of conchas and even had other items such as bread pudding. I don't believe I tried anything here that I did not enjoy. The only reason why I am deducting a star is because the last time I came by, I didn't realize that they didn't have parchment paper to put on the tray. My bread pudding was really moist and I was grossed out that it was sitting on the tray that may not be sanitized. It would have been nice to have something clean on the try before putting items on top.

Yelp
Drove here just for the Rosca! Was very busy and was very happy with not only the Rosca but the bread was flavorful! My family and I will be back.

Yelp
Cool bakery recommended by a friend. Got a craving for Mexican pastries and swung by. There's a few parking spaces out front and plentiful metered street parking. The store is compact but there are tons of fresh breads! The production facility looks legit. Grabbing your bread via the provided tongs and tray were a breeze. Checkout was efficient, courteous, and prompt. One bread was they accept card.

Yelp
My friend's birthday was yesterday, April 17th. They said all they wanted for their birthday was a cute mini heart shaped cake from somebody we had found on instagram who had already made a cake for us in the past. Messaged them almost 2 weeks in advance. No response. April 15th, We were rushing trying to find someone who can do a cake for our friend's birthday that's when we found La Concha Bakery. The reviews and pictures looked good. I went in to order the cake. The lady who helped me was very nice and made sure to get all the details for what I wanted. I showed her the reference photo, I said I wanted a heart shaped red velvet black and red cake with nice piping, that's it. I picked it up on April 17th and it looked amazing. Not only did they follow my request but also added some glitter and pearls which made the cake even cuter. My friend loved it! At 11:50 pm we finally cut into cake and it was delicious only downside of the cake... black icing makes your mouth look purple for the night! It was so delicious and beautiful. I am so grateful they were able to do this cake for us. Thank you!

Yelp
Had a craving for some pan dulce this morning so I headed over to La Concha and at first I thought it had shut down because the parking was fenced off and the windows are boarded but to my surprise THEY ARE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION!! I walked in and grabbed myself my favorite piece of pan dulce and it did not disappoint! They have a lots of traditional pans to choose from and a few not so traditional, prices are very reasonable, service is always good, got a craving for pan dulce...then stop here!!

Yelp
Ok one day in Sept I was stopping by my favorite Pan Dulce bakery shop to buy some sweet bread when lo and behold !! I spotted in the bakery cake case ?? A lemon snow cake just like the one I use to get at George's Wonderful World of cakes . This cake is a light fluffy white cake with lemon curd filling and coconut flakes all on top .It's heaven pillows but with coconut!! Try it then try to forget it !!

Fariya L.

Yelp
I just wanna stop by and give them the credit they deserve I never post reviews but they absolutely deserve it, it was my birthday today I was so busy with work and school and forgot to get a cake I wanted something custom and I was stressed and sad because I know nowhere did same day cakes because my cake was simpler and smaller in size they made an exception for me and saved my entire birthday, it's not only that though the cake was delicious amazing quality and it looked stunning I will definitely be coming back

Yelp
Delicious and fresh! Just got back from our first time stopping there. Staff were super nice. We got home and tried the pastries we bought - oh my goodness!! The Apple and pumpkin empanadas are amazing! The croissants and the chocolate concha's - excellent! You must try! I saw people buying coffee so I'll try a coffee next time.

Yelp
For those in pursuit of genuine Mexican baked goods, this establishment stands out as a prime destination. The selection of breads and pastries is not only extensive but also boasts an exceptional standard of flavor and quality. The staff consistently provides a warm and hospitable atmosphere, enhancing the overall customer experience. Additionally, the bakery features striking mural art on its exterior, which has become a popular backdrop for photographs, adding to its charm and appeal. Numerous referrals to this bakery have resulted in glowing feedback, affirming its reputation for excellence. I am confident that any new patrons will share in this sentiment and find much to appreciate at this fine bakery.

Yelp
Ayyyyye! I finally live in a city with a panaderia! Maybe such a notion is preposterous down here, but it was usually a bit of a drive for me to find a good panaderia in The Bay. Don't even get me started on NH. Felt like there was only one in the whole dame state... So having La Concha in the same city is absolutely glorious! ___F O O D___ My girlfriend Christina C. and I went a little overboard with our pan dulce order, but we were understandably excited. We liked EVERYTHING! So tasty. So fresh. My favorite purchase was the besos - two cookies stuck together with strawberry jam and covered in coconut. I could taste the berries, the cookies, and the coconut individually. Honorable Mentions: Cono, vanilla and chocolate conchas, beef empanada. All were solid. The cono (Danish dough filled with Bavarian cream) was probably best out of this bunch. Delicious Bavarian cream. I enjoyed the pastry's texture. Last place: Cherry empanada. It didn't suck. Just not my favorite of the bunch. I was hoping for more cherry flavor, more filling, and a better texture from the pastry. ___S E R V I C E___ Service was helpful and friendly. They were fairly efficient too. Thanks for being so patient when we couldn't make up my mind. ___E X T R A S___ -They open at 6am everyday! Kudos to them. If I ever wanted conchas and coffee before work, I'll know where to go. -Limited parking in the lot. Metered street parking is available. No parking payments on Sunday or holidays. -COVID precautions. I don't recall masks being necessary, but they limited customers to four at a time. -They do not accept EBT. I am elated to have access to this bakery and will happily return soon for some pan dulce!

Nang L.

Yelp
This is a great bakery. The pan dulce are soft and not dried out like some places. The fruit empanadas are good. My favorites are the meat empanadas. They're paff pastry filled with beef, chicken, or cheese. These are limited and usually sell out before noon. Get them while they're hot! Actually, get them while they're still there!
google avatar

Marcie B.

Yelp
Bread looks good. Service horrid. Spoke to the manager to repair the opinion. My bread was placed in box haphazard. I felt like I was at supermarket. Nothing done about it. I would not recomend it due to service. I guess they don't like repeat buss.

Joel O.

Yelp
Came here looking for champurrado. Was told they only have it in November. And December. That is not what there website says. Get your shit together, your running a business here!

Yelp
i LOVE this bakery. it's right across the studio where i dance and it's always nice to be able to run and grab a snack. everyone is so nice and they even have coffee that you can prepare yourself. i'm so picky with my bolillos and theirs are AMAZING. let's not even talk about their conchas, so yummy! dense la vuelta y visítenlos si pueden .

Yelp
It's been months since I stopped by here due to the location being remodeled. The main area has yet to be ready for operation. You have to head to the side area by the mobile phone service store to enter. The staff is friendly and are good with keeping everything sanitary. I give it 3 stars because the pistachios cake taste undercook, soggy, and no flavor very disappointing because I would order this cake in the past prior to the location closing for remodeling. The bread went up to $1.60 a piece and was ok flavor. Overall not the best experience might consider giving it 1 more chance at another time.

Laura M.

Yelp
Very soft and delicious conchas better than TJ ones and their empanadas are to die for

Yelp
We're staying at the RV place down the street from here and it was my husband's birthday and I needed a cake. A friend said to try this place. Wow !! We got a small chocolate mousse cake for him and we all LOVED it !! I don't like chocolate and this was the best cake I've ever had ! It was so good that we brought a couple of cakes for Christmas.

Loro I.

Yelp
Great bakery, the concha's are the best. Highly recommends. It's a bit expensive but worth it!!

Yelp
A long established Mexican style bakery serving breads and sweets at great prices with most positive attitude and customer service. Good selection, great value and tasty. What more do you need??

Strictly S.

Yelp
I don't usually give reviews but this one needed it. This past weekend I called last minute on a Friday to see if they had any cakes available for my sons bday on Saturday and was able to purchase a strawberry macaron cake with a blue chocolate topping. It was kept frozen so it was perfect for a birthday at the park. When we had the cake it was still a little frozen in the center but my guest loved it! White cake with strawberry jelly. You can't beat the competitive price! The ladies who helped me at the bakery were super sweet! I couldnt help but see all the lovely baked goods at the bakery will definitely be back for another specialty cake!

Kayla M.

Yelp
We found this bakery on google after looking at reviews. We just moved to San Diego and had no idea where to order a cake. We walked in and asked for a gender reveal cake to be made and picked up by the next day. I assumed the answer would be no but they followed through and had it done! We showed them photos and explained what we wanted and they did it perfectly. I am so pleased and so happy! Would definitely recommend. It's also so clean inside and the customer service was amazing.
google avatar

Diane D.

Yelp
Pan dulce is always fresh and delicious. the recent remodel matches the quality and authentic taste of bakery goods Favorite bakery in town !

Mely V.

Yelp
I ordered a birthday cake, I paid extra for strawberry jelly inside the cake. The cake didn't have it. It was sloppy made, it was falling apart. Unacceptable.

Yelp

google avatar

Yelp
The sweet bread was soft and so delicious. A small little place, if you are not paying attention you may drive past. But it is definitely worth stopping by.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here on and off for many years for conchas and coffee. But I recently asked Claudia if she made wedding cakes, and she made my fiancée and me a stunner! Ours was a two-tier white cake with raspberry filling, with fondant & piping on the outside. Claudia was great at taking our half-formed ideas and creating a beautiful design from them. The cake was delivered on time and in excellent condition to our reception dinner venue. Our guests loved it, and we can't wait until next year to defrost the top-tier and enjoy it on our first anniversary. Thank you Claudia!
google avatar

Yelp
Cake de 3 leches was amazing and lady's great customer service I recommend this place and ordering your all events cake here and just come try the bread
