Best Mexican Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"One of Mexico’s highly coveted cevicherías made it stateside last year with its first U.S. location in La Jolla. Mirroring its Tijuana, Mexicali, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tulum menus, the San Diego outpost serves the company’s famed red snapper tostadas, deeply seasoned and fiery shrimp aguachiles, and octopus zarandeado. Diners won’t want to skip the happy hour menu — offered from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday — which includes $7.50 tacos and tostadas, and oysters at $2.50 a pop." - Roxana Becerril

La Jolla’s Best Restaurants and Bars | Eater San Diego

"The well-regarded mariscos restaurant chain with branches in Tijuana, Mexicali, and Mexico City opted to open its first U.S. location in La Jolla. Try the kitchen’s red snapper tostadas, shrimp aguachiles, or octopus zarandeado in a fun-to-take-in dining room — the tropical-leaf-patterned walls and wicker seats give this place an easy Baja California vibe." - Helen I. A group of us went based in a recommendation of a friend for a special occasion. We ordered the whole grilled octopus, house ceviche, grilled cauliflower and wine. All the food came out nicely. Nothing spectacular but decent. The service was friendly. Waiter was pretty busy and the place was full so we had to wait, remind him for refills and grab his attention. It was a chilly day so all of us opted for hot water. The waiter was helpful getting us the water which took a while but failed to mention it was $3.50 for each tiny teacup, even after getting multiple refills no mention of the cost. It was also not stated on the menu how much hot water cost. We were surprised when the bill came with water being one of the larger line items in our bill. Left a pretty sour taste in our mouths in what was otherwise a decent meal. Parking not easy in the area.

I have so many things to say about this place. I'll start by saying the place is beautiful, every detail of its decor, its wallpaper, the bar, its cups... everything is absolutely gorgeous and designed to perfection. The food is extremely delicious! Each dish has an explosion of incredibly delicious flavor. There's no doubt that the chef and everyone who works there know what they're doing... My husband and I tried several dishes and all of them were super delicious. Last but not least, the service. I want to emphasize that the service is extraordinary. Yesterday, a young man named Samuel served us at the bar. His service was so wonderful... he was so kind, attentive, and friendly. He explained each dish, each sauce, the history of the restaurant, and chatted with us a lot. He truly is a lovely person. I recommend this place because even though I pay attention to every detail, it has become one of my favorites in California. Excellent place!!!

Getting from Tijuana to Los Angeles I stopped at this cozy cute restaurant where I ordered Tijuana Burito, these were two huge mouth-watering pieces with a cup of coffee. Great taste and cozy atmosphere, perhaps the two most important components of a quiet pastime. And of course, nice and unobtrusive service.

Really enjoyed the seafood here. I had their red snapper ceviche, which was a great zingy, fresh starter, and the grilled octopus with rice and potatoes. The octopus was beautifully cooked, soft with a slight char, and portions were the right size for me. The service was perfect from every member of staff: friendly, professional and with a very natural hospitality feeling overall. Fair price for the quality and portion size, and I would undoubtedly come back.

Octopus chicharron and grilled octupus were amazing. Lemonade was freshly made and cold. We sat near the sidewalk so we had a great view of the outside activity

La Corriente feels like a hidden gem tucked in an unassuming exterior storefront. Step inside, and you're transported to a unique blend of aesthetics—a French café in Paris meets a breezy beach bungalow in Costa Rica. The ambiance is charming and unexpectedly spacious, with far more seating than you'd guess from the outside. It's intimate yet airy, with thoughtful design and a chill but upscale vibe. Standout Dishes Artichoke Taco – Brilliantly done and truly one-of-a-kind. The flavors are layered: lemony brightness, a subtle smoky undertone, and an irresistible crispy texture. All of it is tied together with a creamy base that makes each bite complex and satisfying. It’s the kind of dish you order again the moment you finish it. XL Shrimp – These wood-fired beauties come with the skin on, perfectly cooked, herb-dusted, and incredibly fresh. The char from the fire adds a wonderful rustic finish, letting the natural flavor of the shrimp shine without being overpowered. Red Snapper Tostada – Ocean freshness in every bite. It's the kind of seafood dish that makes you pause and appreciate how clean and well-handled fish can taste. No need for frills—just great ingredients and solid execution. Guacamole – Simple, fresh, and well-balanced. A solid start or side to share, especially with their house chips or shrimp. Service We were lucky to have Andrea as our server. She was attentive, friendly, and totally on point throughout the evening. Despite a full house, she made us feel well cared for and never rushed. Room for Improvement The only hiccup was at the very beginning: there’s no hostess, which led to some initial confusion about seating. As first-time diners, we nearly walked out after waiting awkwardly at the entrance. It felt a little chaotic and unstructured. But—stick with it. Once seated, everything improves quickly and beautifully. Final Thoughts While portions are smaller than you might expect for the price point, the quality, creativity, and atmosphere more than make up for it. If you're looking for something unique, coastal, and elevated without being pretentious, La Corriente is absolutely worth a visit. Just be prepared to seat yourself and trust the food will do the talking.
